You need a license. And yes the balloon cops (FAA) will be all over your ass in no time.

JasonDJ ,

How come I don’t see any high-speed balloon chases then?

But my BIL had to get a license to fly his drone and needs to get approval from the FAA to go over like 100ft at my MILs house because it’s “so close” (like 3 miles in a straight line) to the airport.

ChicoSuave , in This is what we used to worry about in the 80s. This and global thermonuclear war.

Our parents and their parents all tried to conform to a type of idyllic family stereotype that was never attainable. Family members were ignored and ostracized for behaving outside that stereotype. Excuses like “it’s a fad” started specifically because of the need to explain away the behavior without allowing any follow up questions.

It took a long time but we are finally able to embrace our differences and recognize what’s actually normal. Conservatives are still fighting to live that unattainable lifestyle and mad at everyone else cause they can’t.

Sanctus ,

ceenote , in Lemmy is the best social media

The tragic thing, though, is that if lemmy ever “takes off”, there’s nothing about it that will make it any more resistant to bots and trolls.

It’s kinda like back when Macs had no viruses, because nobody bothered.

Vilian ,

nah, descentralisation is what help, i already read as article explaining exactly that, lemmy problem is that one of it first instances are full of trolls lol

henfredemars , (edited )

I disagree. Lemmy is more resistant to bots because there’s no perverse incentive to boost user activity numbers to please investors and advertisers. Reddit for example doesn’t really care if most comments are fake on a post. It’s still interaction and it pumps numbers. Lemmy is built and run by us. It serves no other masters.

Given that users naturally self-sort into instances, your trolls are also more likely to congregate on instances and communities that can be blocked. I don’t want to name any names but I do block some instances from my view for a reason. The Russian bots congregate in places that are amenable to this, and the design of Lemmy encourages this self-sorting into places where you’re accepted.

The problem is still significant, but there are advantages to the fediverse.

Paradachshund ,

I think it would be more likely bots would flood instances with posts at a level that was unrealistic for the small scale admins we currently have to combat.

GreatAlbatross ,
@GreatAlbatross@feddit.uk avatar

There is a bit of a chain of trust, however. Instance fills with spam bots? Defed.
Spam bots start making their own instances? Go to whitelists.

And as henfredemars says, because there is no financial incentive to grow the userbase, instances can slow things right down if the spam starts.

ceenote ,

This’ll probably be an “agree to disagree,” but I think most websites do make good faith efforts to lower bot usage. Not because I trust them or anything, but because the perception that bot spam is out of control is bad for their bottom line. It drives away real users and high bot activity makes advertisers disinclined to trust that the high traffic is of any value.

awwwyissss ,

Not only that, but it’s actually a much easier target because of the relatively sporadic moderation.

Compared to reddit, the Fediverse’s ability to moderate propaganda and advertising is puny and uncoordinated.

In my city, a cigarette is about $0.65. if you smoked one a minute, and then treated cigarettes like a 40 hour a week job, it would cost $81,120 a year to smoke, but take 87,300 minutes off of your student loan per year. I think we can all see the value here.

Something, something five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes…

Yeah, good luck getting that out of your head, theater nerd.

altima_neo ,

I don’t get how people can afford to smoke. It’s so expensive.

chemical_cutthroat ,
@chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world avatar

It’s really not. If you smoke half a pack a day, it can be cheaper than a starbucks coffee or craft beer. I’m not advocating for it, but as a former pack a day smoker, my budget didn’t really change after I stopped smoking. Honestly, it used to be more expensive, it feels like. Now everything is crazy expensive.

AngryCommieKender ,

Out here in Cali, a pack is $10. I just bought pounds of pipe tobacco and tubes, and rolled them. That would run me about $35-$40 a month.

errer ,

Again though: half a pack is only $5. A can of craft beer is easily more than that. And any espresso drink easily runs you $5+ in CA nowadays.

OsaErisXero ,

Cigarette prices didn't really budge with inflation unlike food, rent, etc

____ ,

With ya. I smoke an odd brand that’s hard to get, in a state that (rightfully) taxes the shit out of them.

Still costs me an even C-note every two weeks, same as always. Have I cut back, probably. But mostly because I’ve started to face my own bullshit instead of expecting smoking to fix it for me.

I straight up enjoy my Kamel Reds, and while I don’t want to model that to the next generation, I’m the better part of thirty pack-years in.

I can either take the risk, or downright break all the other mental health progress I’ve made. Since I have a wife and some folks I care deeply about in my life, imma go with the mental health.

For unrelated reasons, I once was an unmitigated SOB in any interaction. On the rare chances I’ve been in hospital, I’ve been miserable.

Right or wrong, I prefer to communicate with people rather than attack them, and quitting now would not help that.

RJR can have my money, they won’t get the next genration’s money. We have dispensaries, video gaming, and casinos on every corner in my state. My choice of vice could be far worse, and I’m kind of grateful that I settled on smokes, and not gambling.

The CSB doesn’t regulate and it can’t issue fines. They also don’t show up unless you’ve already had an incident. When they do show up, it’s simply to document and investigate the root causes, so they can issue recommendations to one of the regulatory agencies that actually enforces things. You need to have really fucked up for an agency with literally 40 staff overseeing one of the largest industrial economies in the world to notice you.
