@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

It’s ok you can be named Karen and not be a Karen. Same for Chad or Dick/Dickson.

Words can have multiple meanings, and so do names.

The context of a sentence usually is enough to distinguish, hence no one meant your mom isn’t nice just because we use her name as a insult for other people.

Pat_Riot ,
@Pat_Riot@lemmy.today avatar

Right? I’ve known some Becky’s that were alright but I have also met some real Becky’s.

LesserAbe ,

Easy for you to say if that’s not your name. I don’t have any hope of dissuading people from using the name that way, but imagine your name was “motherfucker” and it was a completely new combination of letters, no one had any negative connotation associated with it, then all of the sudden everyone is calling each other motherfucker and it means “fucking someone’s mom.” You probably would be pretty bummed out. Doesn’t matter if you know someone calling someone else a motherfucker isn’t referring to your birth name.

something_random_tho ,

That’s a real Karen thing to say.

LesserAbe ,

That’s a real boring thing to say.

Darkenfolk ,

That’s something a motherfucker would say!

saltesc ,

It’s odd for someone to make the social stereotypes of strangers somehow be all about themselves, especially when their stance is that they don’t like it being all about them.

It’s like some unusual form of egocentricity self-inflicting harm on itself. Like, there’s no spotlight, but the complaint is that there is one, so the person finds a spotlight to shine on themselves to make the complaint valid.

And the coincidence of what society calls those people…

There are others that could consider their names to be in far worse situations, but obviously don’t—in fact many run with it for laughs. And yet, your comment…for this… Life must be pretty good to have such troubles.

LesserAbe ,

I encourage you to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. The “joke” is there’s this archetypal character who is often named Karen who is entitled and makes unreasonable demands. If your name is Karen, that sucks. It’s not about egocentrism, the villain in this joke is literally named Karen. Imagine you couldn’t go through life and raise a concern about any issue because someone would be like “har har, you’re being a real Karen”. Even if it’s a joke, when you hear it a thousand times that gets old and it sucks.

I have some friends who named their daughter Alexa before Amazon released the virtual assistant with the same name. Kids at school tease her. She can’t go by Alexa, she has to go by Lex. Again, I encourage you to imagine yourself in someone else’s place.

MotoAsh , (edited )

It IS about ego-centrism to hear a comment about some OTHER person with your name, and go, “ugh, this will reflect poorly on me”.

Yea, it will if you’re surrounded by morons that don’t know you’re a different person…

Literally, get over yourself. Alexa is far more understandable, but the same thing applies: It’s only a problem when you’re surrounded by morons. Children are morons. Stop trying to regulate what adults do simply because morons exist.

Do better. Set a better example than some troglodyte that gets caught up in every zeitgeist.

LesserAbe ,

You’re right, we shouldn’t regulate this type of speech. I’m not proposing we outlaw calling someone “a Karen.” I’m arguing that people who care about how others feel should reconsider this type of joke.

You mentioned that this sort of thing is only a problem if you’re surrounded by morons. Let’s be generous and call them people who don’t see things your way. Isn’t that all of life? I gave the example of a child named Alexa because it’s a literal real life example. It is a thing that happens, not a hypothetical. I have a kind and quiet family member named Karen, and it’s a nuisance in her life.

You mentioned egocentrism. Isn’t it egocentric to think “I will say whatever I want and if that makes someone else feel bad who cares?” I try to live my life in a way where I’m not knowingly causing other people discomfort. Sometimes that’s not possible for good reason. We can still try.

MotoAsh ,

No, I meant what I said. Surrounded by morons.

What you need to realize is… Most humans are morons. Not caring what others think can be motivated by many things, ego only being one of them.

I do not speak of being offensive, but people taking offense at stupid things like, “karen”. Stop being an easily offended moron. It goes A LOT further than trying to walk on egg shells.

lidd1ejimmy ,

I love your responses and I totally agree about putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. Those who dare to call others inappropriate for things are the same ones that start movements like Karen and ruin peoples lives to gain more views and followers on there platforms…

It’s especially true for teenagers that gets bullied because of things like it. (Although probably less of a problem for Karens since it’s a rather outdated name.)

You’d be in the right to be bummed out sure.

But as adults I don’t think you should hold as much importance to it, it’s how to avoid hurting, lightheartedness and humor is the better response.

Someone named Karen making fun of Karens is just perfect, and the jokes for someone named motherfucker would write themselves!

chatokun ,

Nah. My name starts with Chat that is pronounced Shat. I grew up with my name being joked at being equated to shit by immature people. It’s easy to get over. Every chat someone types out or references is not me. Same with every shit or shat. People need to get over themselves.

I do like pretending everytime someone asks “Chat, is this blah?” that they’re talking to me, but only as a joke. I’m in no way personally offended.

I will say it again: 30 people in a residential pool (described as small in the post) is disgusting. It has nothing to do with the house, the backyard, the barbecue, the pets, the grass, the carpet, etc. It has nothing to do with anything except the pool and its capacity.

SchmidtGenetics , (edited )

Hm, didn’t know my comment mentioned that I wouldn’t clean my house before a party. It’s almost as if you’re trying to imply I said something I didn’t so that my comment appears unreasonable.

Well usually you clean a house/pool/yard before having people over… your comment IS unreasonable…. Since cleaning is an issue or something…?

30 people in a residential pool (described as small in the post) is disgusting. It has nothing to do with the house, the backyard, the barbecue, the pets, the grass, the carpet, etc. It has nothing to do with anything except the pool and its capacity.

You mean like a yard/house not having the capacity of the same amount and it gets dirty and needs to be cleaned up…? Grass will get wrecked, the bbq isn’t meant to cook for 30 people and needs to be cleaned it’ll get disgusting too. The carpet will need to be vacuumed too… are you seriously afraid of doing regular chores more frequently or something…? Because yeah this is also unreasonable….

Having 30 people on apartment is disgusting as well, the air gets stale, they drop stuff… see how this asinine thought can apply to ANYTHING, which makes it hella unreasonable…. All it is, is excuses to not socialize…….

Dude it’s a pool, it gets dirty. So what you need to clean it twice a week instead of once a month. You lazy? Don’t want to build relationships or something? There’s nothing disgusting about having a short party that makes a mess you need to deal with.

Its called having friends and building relationships, do you think that requires no works or something…? Sometimes you need to dirty your pool/house/yard to not be a basement troll. So yeah again…. Yeah… your comment is unreasonable since you’re saying everyone needs to stay in their basement and not make a mess or have fun lmfao.

Is all your furniture wrapped in plastic so it can’t get dirty? Because that’s the attitude you’re exuding here……. Lmfao.

rand_alpha19 ,

It's not about the pool, it's about the grossness of being so close to others. This just tells me you've never been to a large party, otherwise you would obviously understand the need to have enough space.

I have been to cramped weddings, to parties of multiple hundreds of people for which there was not enough room. It is hot, it is smelly, it is humid, it is gross. A pool is worse. It has nothing to do with me having to clean.

A pool party I attend as a guest that does not have the room for those guests is gross. I don't care about cleaning. It's about capacity.

SchmidtGenetics ,

It’s called temporary discomfort to build relationships.

Go back to your basement troglodyte.

Yeah cramped buildings can have stale air and messes, is it gonna kill you or something…. go clutch your pearls lmfao.

They don’t need to be exclusive. Power generation should be diverse. Otherwise prices will go through the roof on times without wind (happens in Germany). This can lead to higher energy prices in combination with high energy exports.

ShortN0te ,

Nuclear power does not solve the issue here. Nuclear reactors take hours or even days to ramp up or down. They are not quick enough to react to such occasions.

menemen , (edited )
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

True, it wouldn’t be enough, This is why Germany still has a lot of coal-fired power station and natural gas power stations, despite huge investments into renewables, and is also investing a lot into wood-fired power stations (imo a really terrible idea). The nuclear plants could still ease the situation by giving a stable basic load that has some planable variability (wind models are getting also better every year and aren’t that bad as it is). For now renewables cannot really provide a very stable basic load (at least not here, might be different for other areas).

There are great concepts to improve all of this with stuff like pumped-storage hydroelectricity, but those cannot be build everywhere and take up a lot of space. It is going forward and I think nuclear power will come to an end eventually. For now, I think they still have their place (and imo Germany acted irrationally by shutting them all down).

I mean, we’ve been lucky that France completly fucked their energy sector up (hints towards that nuclear plants probably also won’t be the ultimate solution), otherwise we’d have lost a loooot of money and would have had energy prices even worse.

Negative energy prices are a bad thing! That means that someone is dumping energy into the grid (you should be paying the grid if you have solar panels!!) In the UK all renewable energy had to be called ‘experimental’ so that the pricing was fixed and the government picks up the tab - that’s not good. Check this map - right now the wind isn’t blowing and solar hasn’t got out of bed - so most of the countries using renewables are looking shit - later today solar will kick in, but tonight it will be bad again. That isn’t a solution.

It’s not for their security, but for that of genuinely clueless people that are just running an actually outdated browser that might have known and exploitable security flaws.

LeFantome ,

It is not about security at all. They do not want to test or support old browsers. So, they set a minimum version and tell you that you need to upgrade to that.

If they only support one browser, it is going to be Chrome. Chrome has more zero-day vulnerabilities than any other project I can think of. It is not about security.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah if it were about security they’d check the version of HTTPS, SSL, TLS and all that stuff.

efstajas , (edited )

Doing that would tell you nothing about whether the browser might have un-patched, known vulnerabilities elsewhere.

efstajas , (edited )

How do you know this? Of course there are lots of reasons for why they’d want to enforce minimum browser versions. But security might very well be one of them. Especially if you’re a bank you probably feel bad about sending session tokens to a browser that potentially has known security vulnerabilities.

And sure, the user agent isn’t a sure way to tell whether a browser is outdated, but in 95% of cases it’s good enough, and people that know enough to understand the block shouldn’t apply to them can bypass it easily anyway.

Multiple women have come forward with similar claims and the social media thing has been well documented as far as I know.
