Wait, wait, wait. When the video starts showing the constable, he is already holding his leg out in front of him, as if to force the driver to stop. No kicking motion can be seen in the video. So it’s legal to just hit someone who is holding his leg out in front of your car (however stupid that may be), injure him seriously and then just drive away?!

amelia ,

Ok but don’t you at least have to stop and check on the injured person? I mean even if it’s an accident, you’re obliged to stop and help, aren’t you? Is that just a Europe thing? I’m not American, but it would seem like a very basic rule to agree on.

amelia ,

These numbers look very questionable. Twice as much salt as alcohol to kill someone? I’m sorry but I call bullshit.

amelia ,

According to Wikipedia, the lethal dose of table salt is 0.5-1g/kg, not 10 as stated in the post.

Mulholland Drive. Not only is it the best movie ever made, it also has everything: love, romance, crime, horror, humor, action, mystery, …

amelia ,

To be fair, it wasn’t a completely serious answer to the question. I do really believe what I said but I’m aware that Lynch isn’t for everyone.

amelia ,

Ok this made me laugh out loud. Good job.

amelia ,

Sounds really interesting. I’m thinking about getting a foldable that doesn’t allow different layouts for the screens, will probably check it out if I get one. Does it allow the swipe down gesture to open notifications?

amelia ,

There’s a lot of One UI features that I take for granted now (same thing I also hear from friends who switched to a Pixel)

As someone who has only ever used Samsung and is thinking about getting a pixel this worries me a bit. Could you elaborate?

amelia ,

Thank you! That is very informative.

Fairbuds are Fairphone’s proof that we really could make better tiny gadgets (arstechnica.com)

But of course we all know that the big manufacturers don’t do this not because they can’t but because they don’t want to. Planned obsolescence is still very much the name of the game, despite all the bullshit they spout about sustainability.

amelia ,

They explain very thoroughly on their website why they did it:

…fairphone.com/…/9836188988049-Audio-Jack-3-5mm

amelia ,

Yeah, same here. It’s a pretty specific demand when bluetooth headphones have become really good and actually have a lot of advantages compared to wired ones. Also there is always the option to use a USB C dongle so it’s really not that big of a deal.

amelia ,

The moment Adobe Creative Cloud works on Linux, I’ll switch. Until then I’ll have to stick with Windows.

amelia ,

Not trying to defend stupid internet connectivity but my washing machine is in the basement in a shared laundry room while I live on the second floor of the apartment building. No way I’ll hear it beep so a notification would be very useful actually. This is a very common situation in Europe where a lot of people live in rental apartments.

The problem is rather that there needs to be WiFi access in the laundry room.

amelia ,

It is mine. There is a room with each tenant’ washing machine in the basement and that is a typical situation in Germany.

amelia ,

Well you can refuse to accept papers that contain it. No problem with that. It’s their internal guidelines.

amelia ,

I’m crying salty tears on my S22 that gets me 2.5 hours of SOT on a good day, 1.5h on a not so good day.

amelia ,

Yeah, it really is a shame. Apart from the battery it’s a really nice phone, but the battery issue completely ruins the experience. I’m going to replace mine as soon as my current contract ends in July so I can get a good deal for a device with a new plan. I even dropped it and shattered the screen back in October but didn’t bother to have it repaired because I didn’t want to put more money into this device. I’m annoyed by the cracks every single day, but it just feels too wrong to pay more money for it. I’ll be so happy when I finally have a new phone.

Looks like the Pixel 8 would be a good option. I don’t think I can wait until the Pixel 9 comes out. I’m also keeping an eye on the Pixel Fold 2, hope it’ll be released in May.

Is there any medicine that can give me happy hormones and does not need a doctor's prescription?

Things are becoming more depressing every day and I can’t afford for professionals and don’t want to jump to the last resort or drugs. Is there a medicine that can make me happy if I take it in proper doses and does not require a doctor’s prescription?

amelia ,

Vitamin D3 is a good idea, generally the recommendation is 1000 IU a day. Especially now after the winter (assuming you’re in the Northern hemisphere) your vitamin D storage is probably depleted (the body needs a certain amount of UV radiation on the skin to produce vitamin D.

Regular exercise has been proven to help against depression and I think it’s probably the best and most important thing you can do. While helping your depression it will also help your general health and fitness.

Eat well: lots and lots of veggies, legumes and whole grain products. If unhealthy food makes you happy, don’t cut it from your diet completely. Allow yourself to eat sweets etc every once in a while and in moderation, but try to have a very healthy diet as a basis.

These things are probably hard to implement when you’re depressed in the first place but I guarantee you they’ll help and become easier as you go if you consistently stick to them. It takes about 66 days on average to build new habits. So if you manage to stick to it for about 2-3 months, it will become a lot easier.

Good luck!

Not a native speaker here. Would a French woman also be 'a Frenchman’s and if not, how would you refer to a French woman correctly?

amelia ,

Wow, this actually sounds very plausible.

My dreams are not unlike yours

They long for the safety

And break like a glass chandelier

But there’s laughter and oh, there is love

Just past the edge of our fears

And there’s chaos when push comes to shove

But it’s music to my ears

I really wonder how big it’s going to be. I’m ok with the aspect ratio as long as it’s still <150mm in height.

amelia ,

Spoons, forks, knives. That’s the only correct order. Knives are on the right because you use them with your right hand, obviously.

amelia ,

I don’t know if that’s just a German thing, but: Swiffer.

The knockoffs are all crap.

MKBHD made an interesting video about this already a year ago:

An RPG where all the characters are LLM-powered with their story baked in, so you can actually have a free conversation with them and they’ll be basically chatGPT pretending they’re an actual real character. Bonus points for it being a VR game.

Next iteration: a game that’s generated by an AI while you play it so every playthrough is absolutely completely different.

I can’t wait for AI-powered games, to be honest.

amelia ,

Yes, that’s exactly what I had in mind. The characters need to have their story and their intentions hard coded. But using that as a basis, how cool would it be to have an actual natural conversation with them where you can just ask them questions that come to your mind instead of having to choose from a set of pre defined questions. It would certainly require some re-imagination of RPGs but that wouldn’t actually hurt at all.

I have no idea if this could work anytime soon, but at some point I’m sure it’ll be possible.

amelia ,

I’ve had exactly this discussion with a friend recently. I share your opinion, he shared what seems to be the view of the majority here. I just don’t see what the qualitative difference between the brain and a data-based AI would be. It almost seems to me like people have problems accepting the fact that they’re not more than biological machines. Like there must be something that makes them special, that gives them some sort of “soul” even when it’s in a non-religious and non-spiritual way. Some qualitative difference between them and the computer. I don’t think there necessarily is one. Look at how many things people get wrong. Look at how bad we are at simple logic sometimes. We have a better sense of some things like plausibility because we have a different set of experiences that is rooted in our physical life. I think it’s entirely possible that we will be able to create robots that are more similar to human beings than we’d like them to be. I even think it’s possible that they would have qualia. I just don’t see why not.

I know that there is a debate about machine learning AI and symbolic AI. I’m not an expert to be fair, but I have not seen any possible explanation as to why only symbolic AI would be “true” AI, even though many people seem to believe that.

amelia ,

Is it just me or did the recommendation algorithm become much worse a few years ago? I think there was a big update at some point and it’s sucked ever since. If feels like it remembers about the last 10 videos I watched. You were interested in topic XYZ a few months ago and there is lots of new content about it? Sure you don’t want to know anything about it!

amelia ,

I honestly kind of doubt that. It’s too good.

amelia ,

Ah okay. Well maybe GPT 4 is better than I thought. I’m kind of happy to be wrong, it’s really impressive if it’s real.

amelia ,

I think green bubbles (non iPhone) means it’s using SMS so it can cost people money to send messages, especially images which would be sent as MMS I guess.

I’m an Android user though so I don’t really know. Also I’m in Europe where nobody cares and just uses Signal, WhatsApp or Telegram.

A kitchen paper holder that you can mount to a wall, shelf, etc, and that has a stopping mechanism so that it allows you to rip some paper off the roll with just one hand. Absolute kitchen game changer.

amelia ,

I have no idea if they exist for parchment too. I got one like this:

amelia ,

Can you run Adobe software via proton? As soon as that works I’ll be on Linux.

amelia ,

I need Lightroom and I’ve tried Darktable but it just doesn’t cut it.

amelia ,

Is breakfast breath worse than lunch breath or dinner breath?

amelia ,

As someone else said: food softens the enamel and makes your teeth more vulnerable so brushing right after breakfast may cause way more damage. I always brush my teeth before breakfast and almost never have any problems with my teeth. I know that my friends who frequently need treatment for their teeth brush them after breakfast.

But that’s of course anecdotal evidence that doesn’t say much, and I’m no dentist, so I may be wrong.

amelia ,

As a woman: I’d love to use bigger phones - as soon as they give me pockets I can fit them into.

It’s one of the reasons I find foldables so interesting. The Google Pixel Fold has the perfect form factor. If only it wasn’t so expensive…

amelia ,

When someone in the supermarket coughs, I (a German) try to get as many aisles away from them as possible, so yes, can also confirm.

amelia ,

I would also assume that if someone who looks like a James introduces themselves as Samantha, it’s absolutely fine to ask for the correct pronouns, or ask them to confirm it’s female pronouns. Samantha would probably actually appreciate it.
