Agreed, most of the super hots aren’t actually very good tasting at all and you’d be better off sticking with a cayenne, hot Thai, or maybe a Red Savina. I have grown and had tons of super hots over the years and the only ones I actually likes were the Chocolate 7-Pots and Trinidad Moruga Scorpions. Even then, I would usually not use them in cooking as they just overpower everything with heat.

zod000 ,

I have yet to try the Last Dab sauce as it is overpriced IMO. Your description of it does make me more interested though.

zod000 ,

Mostly same here, but (I have an SSD with W10 on it. I haven’t booted into my Windows drive since 2023. I only had a a few games installed on that drive, but it was also useful for the rare instance that I needed to some some propriety configuration utility.

zod000 ,

The W11 installer sadly doesn’t allow that anymore with the current versions. If you have that older installer, keep it safely archived.

zod000 ,

It worked as of six months ago, but it is possible that was patched in this recent “fix”.

zod000 ,

Your experience mirrored mine, except that I also played the original. The game had some good ideas and mechanics, but it was frustrating and one of the few Super Mario games that I didn’t even want to finish.

zod000 ,

I am the opposite. When I was younger, I have significantly more free time and certainly better reflexes.eye-hand coordination. I doubt I could come close to beating any of the more challenging NES games that I did when I was a kid (not that Mario Sunshine was in that era).

zod000 ,

Most of the newer CPU’s have an NPU already, Microsoft just set a higher performance requirement for NPUs to be officially labeled an “AI PC” which they are pushing hard.

zod000 ,

For real, how is it that Brother makes the only printer that everything from my phone to my servers can use without problems. Bonus points for not gouging on toner.

zod000 ,

Fuck, I really hate to agree with Elon on anything, but that is a ridiculous argument. LeCun must also really believe that trees only fall in the woods when someone is around to see it happen.

zod000 ,

Irssi. It’s extensible and stable, been using it for years.

zod000 ,

TIL about the artificial sweetener thing, this explains a lot. I have never been able to understand people enjoying diet soda.

zod000 ,

The “Oregon Trail generation” is generally known as the Xennials which is people born from 77-83, so it’s not just Elder Millenials. I’m in this group and think Oregon Trail generation is a cooler name, but that’s probably because I played a shitload of Oregon Trail.

zod000 ,

Almost every time, except when its cholera :)

zod000 ,

Everyone calls it “KMFDM - symbols” for a reason. I agree only in that it drives me insane when I would rip CDs and have to deal with trying to figure out what to name them. Also, fuck Leæther Strip for their stupid “æ” in the name.

zod000 ,

I played through the public test quite a bit with a friend. This is a really good (and difficult) update.

zod000 ,

It also helps that one of the patches toned down the spawn rate. It was just insane trying to get an initial base going.

zod000 ,

Interesting, I guess that could make sense that the spreading fire would be a constant noise/aggro generator.

zod000 ,

I feel personally attacked by this post!

zod000 ,

My friend has probably this exact TV in their family home until probably the early 2000s. I bet it was because no one wanted to move it.

zod000 ,

This was it exactly in my head as well, there was no question.

zod000 ,

The headphone port is one of the reasons I’m considering an Xperia next. My Pixel 4a battery life is feeling pretty rough.

zod000 ,

Even though I wasn’t a fan of their modified Gnome DE, I really like the distro as a whole. It made it seamless to use both AMD and Nvidia cards, Steam worked out of the box, and I had no issues with using Ubuntu or Debian repos. I’m not sure whether I’ll use Cosmic or not, but I’ll probably give it a fair try eventually.

zod000 ,

Mine too, but the lack of headphone jack kills it for me. I may end up getting an expensive Sony as there aren’t many choices left that aren’t gigantic garbage phones.

zod000 ,

Untrue, they also work in Nethack and other rogue-likes!

zod000 ,

Our sister company had their VPN broken by this and we had to switch to another system. Even though it wasn’t a particularly secure VPN (IPSec), the builtin Windows VPN was extremely reliable and convenience compared to shit like Pulse.

zod000 ,

Maybe they just got a statement by “Most Men Lawn Service” or something.

zod000 ,

I like to think of the Earth more as a pizza roll. Eating one right out of the oven sure feels like tasting magma to me.

zod000 ,

I have always loved FB2K, but I didn’t like using it in linux. It was slow to start (which is snap’s fault) and was tough to get working in a stable state once I started trying to use components that I prefer (probably wine’s fault, but who knows).

zod000 ,

Probably a bit late, but I really like Quod Libet. It is very extensible, runs light, has excellent tagging and filtering, and just feels similar enough to how I set up my foobar2000.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

zod000 ,

I’ve lived through this one. Fixing it required me taking a full day off to suffer.

zod000 ,

I switched from Win7 to Linux, but you are right, few stuck to their guns on that threat. My only Windows machine now is a work laptop that I have to use for some tasks. Admittedly, even Win 10 is looking good now compared to Win11. MS is doing a bang up job as being consumer antagonists.

Pros and cons of getting a job at a very small software company? (14 employees)

I have the opportunity to maybe get a job as a software developer at a small software company that employs 14 people. But my gut is telling me that getting a job at a small company like that might he terrible. Do you guys have any experiences working at companies that small?...

zod000 ,

I’m in this exact situation now and have been for many years, while previously in a gigantic company…

Pros:

You (hopefully) tend to have significantly more influence on the tech stack and software direction.

You're (hopefully) treated like a real person and not a cog in the corporate machine.

You (hopefully) get to learn and do a larger variety of things.

Cons:

Pay can be lower, and getting raises can be harder when you're talking directly to the CEO/Owner and it is quite literally coming out of his or her pocket.

Taking leave tends to be harder when there is so few people to pick up the slack.

PopOS has been running games fine on my 3070 for many years at this point. It might be worth another try.

zod000 ,

It could be Wayland issues with Nvidia, I use three higher res monitors, but only 60Hz in X11.

zod000 ,

Came here to say this, glad I am not alone.

zod000 ,

I had it spoiled for me about 30 min before I went to the theater to see it by a coworker. I never forgave him.

zod000 ,

I currently have three monitors + a laptop, but its actually two separate workstations with two monitors each. I used to have a few more, but I definitely didn’t get that much benefit from 3+ per workstation. My main benefit was being able to keep chats, email, and music player readily available/visible while still having two full screens for work.

You are going to be trapped in a room for 12 hours with a mid 2000s office desktop with no internet connection and an external hard drive; what are you putting on the hard drive?

I’ve got some DOOM WADs I have been meaning to play so I would probably grab Trench Foot, Total Chaos, and the sequel to Ashes 2063, Ashes: Afterglow with a portable install of GZDoom to play them....

zod000 ,

12 hours isn’t really even that long, could probably bring just about anything, but I think Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri would be a great way to spend that time.

zod000 ,

I feel personally attacked by this meme.

zod000 ,

As someone that owned all three, the NES without question. If you have budget or desire for a second pick, my recommendation would be to try and find a Sega Game Gear and pick up an adapter for playing Master System games.

Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn’t use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don’t agree to their terms, then I don’t get access to their new products. That...

zod000 ,

I’ve owned multiple Sceptres and the only thing that ever broke for me was button related (on both the remotes and TV itself). You’d think buttons would be a solved problem, but I’ve owned three of those TVs because of the price (SmartTVs were not universal then).

That all being said, the displays themselves are mediocre and the speakers are weak and poor quality. The quality is probably right in line with the price, but if you’re coming from a higher end TV, it will be noticeable. I always had to use speakers or a soundbar to get acceptable quality sound, the display you get used to pretty quickly.

Assuming Sceptre still makes dumb TVs by then, I’ll probably switch back to them when mine either die or LG crosses some red lines.

zod000 ,

LG have started sending some bullshit major updates to both of my TVs recently. The whole “home” interface is now sluggish and full of video heavy garbage I don’t want to see. They are still better than some smart platforms (looking at you Vizio, Samsung, and Roku), but I am far less pleased with them than I used to be.

zod000 ,

A good cross platform user friendly client goes a long way, especially having a good desktop version.
