Isn’t this one from alice in wonderland?

Probably because unlike paying for the service, we don’t feel how it takes our money from us.

A psychological trick that works so great that it made a lot of services exist in the first place like the whole of YouTube. And now we’re kinda addicted to those too.

What stupidly easy tech solution do people gloss over all of the time? (kbin.melroy.org)

For me it's the paranoia surrounding webcams. People outright refuse to own one and I understand, until they go on and on about how they're being spied. Here's the secret - unplug the damn thing when you think you won't use it or haven't used it in a while....

Well yes but overleaf makes it possible to work on it with a mate, on any device without having to install anything, and it also saves your progress online so you don’t lose it or forget you document at home.

If your not seeing were i’m going it’s perfect for school project. Through high school and college i’ve done all my projects with it… I think that’s where it shines.

Funkytom467 ,

Yeah to be fair if you do all the homework with LaTeX there’s no reason not to set up your machine.

I’ve even heard of someone who even used it to take notes in class… Honestly I wouldn’t dare to try and learn that!

But yes, that’s when the macros and possibilities you don’t have on overleaf becomes really good to have.

Synchronized favorites is pretty nice too.

About synchronization, one i’ve never seen is tabs, being able to open any tabs on one device to another. Maybe the clipboard could also be useful to share link/text to another device…

Dialectic can never be a science, you can’t apply the same methodology. Even when it’s material.

However it is philosophy, and if your searching for some material reality then it’s ontology.

Science too is a product of ontology, it’s a methodology created for this exact purpose and wich can be studied in this field.

Saying physical properties are social abstractions sounds to me like social constructivism, which is epistemology, again philosophy.

Social sciences can be soft science precisely when they are not dialectic and rely on the methodology of science.

And to be clear, soft science is just a science that is based on a hard science, in which we don’t have enough work done to explain every emergent properties using fundamental properties of matter.

Psychoanalysis is an outdated philosophical theory, so indeed just a scam now.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

Its usefulness never made me disappointed despite this drawback.

I’m a physicist at heart, which might explains it… To me the use in philosophy is just as important, especially in philosophy of science and metaphysics.

Simply put I couldn’t imagine studying how reality works without ever wandering what it is and how to best study it.

Labour theory of value puts value on goods for the sole purpose of trading and explaining trades. Both LTV and STV does.

Marx’s use of LVT is to criticize how Capitalism leads to exploitation. But although the specifics differ SVT could still be used to raise the same critiques.

But should it be work?

Should we really have a society where selling your body is an opportunity to make money.

For instance, it imply that some poor women are gonna take it regardless the consequence, just because it’s the best alternative to pay the bills.

I can barely tolerate the physical straining we put on some workers. Sex work’s consequences are unacceptable to me in that same sens, sometimes worse.

So sure, no matter your opinion we should respect them, and not incriminate them!

And of course not all sex work is the same… to be acceptable it just requires better conditions. It can’t be something you choose out of need.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

True and tested.

The best help is probably indirectly having better social policies overall. Although never perfect, the best we are the lesser the problem.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

It’s different in nature. No other jobs infringe on your intimacy in this way.

I do agree the system is the problem, i also would advocate for better conditions for any difficult jobs.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I think the “body” in that expression is quite specifically referring to genitals, or the selling of your intimacy.

Because that’s what’s different from any other physical labour, the part of your body involved. That’s the specific problem of sex work no?

Funkytom467 , (edited )
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

Therapist is another topic, with problems of mental intimacy indeed.

The rest is the patient’s intimacy that you have to deal with. It is a vastly different intimate experience to wash a genitalia and be penetrated. And so, vastly different consequences for your well being.

Pretty common grilling meat yourself in Japan, but for a steak just asking for how you want it done makes way more sens.

Yeah I guess the trend as been imported to Europe in general, French here.

Although in France some aren’t bad, just mid. The problem is they are ALL overpriced.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

There is a correlation between the country’s culture and the work culture of a team.

And the work culture of this team definitively is the French work culture.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

The implication is that you know the next part of the sentence but keep it unwritten. The best exemple is when making a list, a, b c …

Sometimes it’s even just a indicator there’s gonna be a next part, like the “We need to talk…”

Although the more degenerate use is to imply the “you know what i mean/imply”, a bit like the english innit in some sens.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

It is good, but i also like some commas too.

For less important propositions, or to have some propositions closer together. Just like paragraphs link some sentences together when having the same point.

I think having that registery and doing it right is really what’s important. Short sentences is great advice because it breaks the habit of long ones, which we get from speaking.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

It’s ok you can be named Karen and not be a Karen. Same for Chad or Dick/Dickson.

Words can have multiple meanings, and so do names.

The context of a sentence usually is enough to distinguish, hence no one meant your mom isn’t nice just because we use her name as a insult for other people.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I still get it, don’t mistake my comment for a lack of compassion.

It’s especially true for teenagers that gets bullied because of things like it. (Although probably less of a problem for Karens since it’s a rather outdated name.)

You’d be in the right to be bummed out sure.

But as adults I don’t think you should hold as much importance to it, it’s how to avoid hurting, lightheartedness and humor is the better response.

Someone named Karen making fun of Karens is just perfect, and the jokes for someone named motherfucker would write themselves!

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

New LGBT flag just dropped, looks fire!

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

Thinking people in their late teenage years and young adults aren’t mature enough to do some of those things is just a big tell of how bad we educate them rather than their brain not being “developed”.

Consent is the most obvious example, teenagers are gonna have a sexual life no matter what you want them to do. Removing consent just remove yourself from the responsibility of educating them and entice them to stay hidden.

Driving is also just necessary to anyone working, again being safe just need to be taught, plenty of adults are just as immature and stupid.

The same can be said for drinking or smoking, prevention is so much more effective than restrictions.

However, for voting or joining the army that’s when i agree. Because the system is built to prey on them, making sure they stay uneducated and vulnerable. So only then does having restrictions make sens to keep them safe.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I agree, the sooner the better.

Sex ed is what makes children mature enough to have sex once they reach the age of doing it.

But what’s the point of raising the age of consent?

My point is there isn’t any if sex ed is done well, it only makes sex more taboo.

Conversely, if you want to raise it, maybe it’s because sex ed wasn’t done properly, making teens not able to be mature enough for an activity they are gonna do anyway.

For driving, I would agree in general we aren’t good at driving, but changing our means of transport isn’t easy, despite being the best solution. That wasn’t really the topic though…

Not sure I share that viewpoint for the US, the history of the indigenous is the story of the people, not the nation.

And the US has many more populations that have great history, from EU and Africa.

But the beginning of its history is founded on the gathering and interaction of all those different cultures.

So for me saying the country is young doesn’t quite have the same connotations of erasure from colonialist, it mostly makes me think of how current the melting pot of all those different cultures are.

I still agree we shouldn’t diminish the importance of indigenous people in it.

Well recently the news in France had the same effect for me. The fascists won the European election, then our president dissolved the National Assembly. And the fascists just seems to be more and more popular recently…

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe since most of Antarctica is claimed by Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

But more pragmatically because most of the population is researchers, which you can expect knows english, the international language.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I’m exactly like that too. I think my nature isn’t nice, but i can choose to be.

And i’m also admiring anyone that as that nice nature, i find it beautiful and extremely attractive. So to a degree i have that goal of trying to choose it whenever i can.

One drawback, wich also coincide with my very rational personality is that i hate having too strong of an emotion, had anger issues as a kid, but also the start of love is somewhat unpleasant for example.

But hey, to me as long as your trying to be better, your are good person.

Funkytom467 ,

At first glance i thought it was a sock

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I think the difference is why we “usually” say that to women and men.

For women the sexist reason would be forcing women to smile just to look beautiful regardless of their emotional needs.

For men it’s masking pain and being tough. Which, if you ask me can also disregard their needs and be toxic, depending on the context…

I’m not familiar with Facebook, but if you can’t create a business account without a personal account, how would you create one without having multiple accounts?

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

My first thought, especially since you can’t lick a gaz.

Now I’m also questioning myself about all noble gaz, what are they like in liquid (or solid) form?..

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I do agree those people you speak about are uninteresting and mostly stupid.

But we should respect stupid people, their ideas aren’t always worth respecting, but as people they themselves deserve considering.

And I praise anyone that has the patience to teach morons to be better people despite their own lack of judgment.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

So if I understood you, you meant in reality we should more or less respect the opinion without arguments based on whether it is more or less subjective?

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

That’s technically true, but the question then becomes, why are our assumptions different?

If it’s based on different beliefs of what reality is (ground work), it would be normal to fight for truth.

If it’s based on our affinity for the result of the argumentation (the house), it would also be normal to fight for our own benefit and those like us.

So realistically i don’t see any reason as to why we should respect each other’s opinions… all would incentives us to fight for the correct assumptions.

This in itself doesn’t mean we should stop respecting people though!

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I get that, most people are like you, it’s normal. Best thing for everyone is to avoid those persons.

But my point of view is a lot more optimistic, i think having this behavior isn’t all their are defined as. They can still grow and learn, especially on other area of life.

Depending on how much they rely on this behavior you can have two approach…

If it’s little, you can teach them better without them knowing, as long as it doesn’t directly clash with their dogma, but it requires to be subtle.

If they rely to much on it, the best course is to detach their opinions from the real world and only speak to them with very down to earth things.

I know it will not always really work, most of the time my optimistic view is to idealistic. I can have it because i’m more tolerant, maybe too much.

The goods thing is, even if i’m wrong, i can enjoy myself doing this, and for the rare time i do change something in that person, well that feels great.

Funkytom467 ,
@Funkytom467@lemmy.world avatar

I might have gone off too smug in my comment now that I reread it. Partly due to oversimplification i guess.

Is it how i spoke of the two approaches that you found smug or is it something else?
