Any guidance on this? I looked into Synthing at one time to backup Android phones and got overwhelmed very quickly. I’d love to use it in a similar fashion to NextCloud for syncing between various computers too.

linearchaos ,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

It really wasn’t all that complicated for me. Install the client on two devices set a share up on one device go to the other device Hit add device put the share ID in. Go back to the first devices admin and say allow the share

marcos ,

Well, it works in a different way than NextCloud. You don’t have a server, instead you just make a share between your computers and they are all peers.

It takes some getting used to the idea, but it’s actually much simpler than NextCloud.

squidspinachfootball ,

So if I wanted to sync photos from my phone to the computer, then delete the local copies on my phone to save space, that would not work?

E: But keep the copies on the computer, of course

marcos ,

You would have to move them into some folder you are not syncing.

FrostKing ,

I was very intimidated as well, I’ll try to simplify it, but as always check the documentation ;)

This is the process I used to sync between my Windows PC and Android phone to sync retroarch saves (works well, would recommend, Pokemon is awesome) I’ve never done it on a Linux, though i assume it’s not too different

docs.syncthing.net/intro/getting-started.html

I downloaded the Synctrazor program so that it would run in the tray, again I’m not sure what the equivalent/if this would be necessary on Linux.

No shade to the writers, but the documentation isn’t super noob friendly, as I figured out. I’d recommend trying to cut out all the fluff, and boil it down to bare essentials. Download the program (whichever one seems right for your device, there’s an app for Android) and follow the process for syncing stuff (I believe I used a video guide, but it’s not actually as complicated as it seems)

If you need specific help I’d be happy to answer questions, though I only understand a certain amount myself XD

Networking has to be the most confusing and tedious IT work I’ve ever done. I still don’t fully understand all the basics of security. Network work feels so dull even I have a hard time seeing my effort.

captainlezbian ,

So gut instinct: he’s probably a misogynist first and black and gay come after that. It may not be correct but holy hell as a lesbian it describes a lot of the gay male conservatives I’ve met.

The more nuanced potential is that people don’t like being put into boxes or perfectly matching stereotypes. Additionally many people can’t read between lines even when it’s obvious. Trump went very hard against immigrants and Black Lives Matter protesters, and he has white supremacists supporting him and a history of anti black prejudices, but he’s never said that he hates black people. Similarly he’s ranted and raved about trans people, and he allies with people who hate gay people, but his words are not explicitly against cis gay people. So if he wanted to be willfully ignorant to declare himself as the special good one who won’t be boxed in by your preconceived notions of what he should be, all he has to do is not read the obvious messages between the lines and hope they go away.

That’s a good option. I remember having a friend that ordered the kid’s size meal at certain restaurants because she didn’t eat that much.

I do that at pizza places when it's an option. Sometimes a small pizza can be 1500 calories, that's too much. Kids will often be less oil and salt too which I prefer for health and taste reasons.

Zorque ,

Food waste isn't as big a problem as people seeking to profit off basic necessities like eating.

People don't go hungry because you didn't eat all your fries, they go hungry because it's not "economical" to feed them.

lordnikon ,

the problem is food cost is more often than not the least expensive cost of a restaurant. especially a fast food restaurant. So giving you a large Fri vs small. is so small for them it’s not even noticeable from their cost. their loss comes from two things the sizes and price difference are only their to get you to buy the one with the beter profit margin. small and medium are only there to make you feel like you got value from buying the large. it cost more for the card stock Fri container than it does for the Fries.
