it’s like the story of the USfighter jets they built it to the avg male thinking it would work for anyone but ended working for noone.

lordnikon ,

that’s why I hope the game-like genre naming really takes off that means I can just play the original and skip the rest

lordnikon ,

yes I was

lordnikon ,

the default is pipewire now so you may need to install the alsa pipewire module

lordnikon ,

you are correct i feel guilty every time I use it. but making my company pay for a license on every job I work on. it’s got one of the best licenses you can get for proprietary software. my only concern is it might go away and can’t last forever like open source can.

lordnikon ,

very true the only reason I’m okay with it is the files are standard markdown and there is no database that locks you in. the only thing keeping me with them is features and workflow. if any open source project gets feature parity I would switch tomorrow

lordnikon ,

no judgements but I’m curious what’s the need for the folder to be sorted first that something like folder pinning or tagging doesn’t work for you?

lordnikon ,

why post the short when the full interview is only 5 mins and Linked in the short’s description?

lordnikon ,

i feel like 95% of these idiots have had the MMR shot when they were kids and don’t even remember.

lordnikon ,

there is a cult of Debian? where do I sign up?

lordnikon ,

Who knew they were telling the truth after all. When they said Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows.

lordnikon ,

good thing that command won’t do anything anymore

lordnikon ,

honestly the biggest problem with the media is. Linux represents the very thing corporate culture in those media empires just can’t fathom. the idea of cooperation for the greater good that Linux represents and not being 100% profit motivated. They just don’t get it and worse they see it as a threat. Microsoft can be a competitor to them but the idea of open source is a competitor to the whole system and that is a far greater threat to the people on top.

They filled the relaxation room with spare patient mattresses so we slept on them.

We had a little separate room branching off the break room about the size of a powder room with just one table and one chair in it. It was so you could go cry or sleep or just not look at your coworkers on your break if you needed it....

lordnikon ,

i mean it will still used for storage

lordnikon ,

honestly I wished the arch wiki turned into a distro agnostic wiki. i have been using debian for decades and use arch wiki all the time but it would be nice to have a one stop shop for linux documentation. the Wikipedia of Linux run as a coalition.

How do we know if there aren't a bunch of more undetected backdoors?

I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I’m more hesitant to do so especially because i’m no security expert and don’t have the time and knowledge to audit my server. All I’ve done so far is disabling password logins and changing the ssh port....

lordnikon ,

you don’t and will never will. I would recommend reading a lecture by Ken Thompson the co-creator of Unix for more details on this cs.cmu.edu/…/Thompson_1984_ReflectionsonTrustingT…

lordnikon ,

that has more to do with evangelicals and events some catholics got conned by corporate interests in the early 30s in response to what FDR was doing with the new deal and the sweeping socialist thinking going around in churches at that time. read up on James W. Fifield Jr and NAM ( National Association of Manufacturers) you will see the destruction of US churches and the rise of the mega church and the 700 club.

lordnikon ,

satisfactory on my 8th full playthrough and the game is not even 1.0 yet

lordnikon ,

yeah that is a good idea I have almost 1000 hours in satisfactory and have a real problem of telling myself I will go to bed after I finish this production line then I blink and it’s 4am.

lordnikon ,

only someone running arch or debian sid or an bleeding edge rolling release on an internet exposed ssh port. the idea of that configuration would sound ludicrous. even so we should be building off git repos not tar balls.

the weird part this situation has made me feel safer. the amount of work that went into social engineering this and it only lasted a month tops for people that run distros that would just not be or should not be used as an exposed server ever.

it shows open source works. This is more embarrassing than anything and we deserve it. We need to pay core library devs and have a mechanism that core libraries can be handed off to a trusted org.while another upstream maintainer can be found or the project shut down and other projects move away from the un maintained project. When the person maintaining the project gets burned out or has other issues.

lordnikon ,

oh 100% i was just taking in general of upstream bleeding edge distro being vulnerable to this kind of upstream attack not specific to xz

lordnikon ,

or i don’t know maybe lead not being in everything helps as well

lordnikon ,

The logic I always subscribe to is, issues in Linux can be fixed maybe not by you or me but someone at some point in the future. On a long enough timeline we win. Where as it’s not an issue with Windows, but a business decision to annoy you and thus can never be fixed.

lordnikon ,

honestly I think it’s 95% there and would get that last 4% if you could go to a retail store and just buy one. the perception would be enough to get hardware and software vendors to start supporting it in a very short time. kinda like how cyberpunk has a steam deck present.

Would it be over night? No but real change is never quick. Perception has to change before the change happens. Why do you think MS and other Software vendors pays so much money to PC manufacturers to stay on Windows.

Remember with a windows PC purchase and bloatware. You’re a customer and a product, your desktop is a billboard. So it’s against their interest to give you agency in what OS you use.

lordnikon ,

I agree but with timeshift im able to be back up and running in 5 mins tops so I take more risks.

lordnikon ,

they always leave off that registry change gets reverted on the next update and it’s now a new change you have to do to turn off the new ad showing up. I also don’t need to change my country location to uninstall a built in browser. Also do you think the registry is just something everyone knows how to use. It’s cryptic as hell and I know they are following a guide on some site. At least when i change a config file there are comments above the change most of the time not cryptic dword codes.

lordnikon ,

yep by no means are they perfect but they are not hostile and that’s fine by me.

lordnikon ,

do the left even watch broadcast networks these days?

lordnikon ,

“This generation is finished” --previous generation understanding the powerful of the previous, previous generation caused climate change and the displacement and famine that go with that.

lordnikon ,

if you have zram enabled why do you have a swap partion on your ssd at all?

How much ram do you have?

anyone else see Ryan Reynolds in that picture?

The truth about linux having 15% market share in India.

I am from india. These numbers are inflated due to our population and government and health sector office pc using linux (ubuntu). These office pcs just require a chrome browser and all the work is done on the browser Nobody here cares what os they use in their office pc. I don’t see anyone here switching to linux on their...

lordnikon ,

I will say that your statement that no one cares about what their OS is. it kind of makes the point. If no one cares. Why would you use a nonfree OS? Other than the FUD and that it’s just what was used before.

lordnikon ,

that looks like a NFC sticker I wonder if they used it for identification. I use stickers like these all the time to program devices around my home.

lordnikon ,

to answer your question you can with budgets under cost explorer and running everything as a cloudformation template

lordnikon ,

I have comes to realize it was never about piracy it was about control and always has been. It was not about about real lost sales but shareholder perception of potential gains if they had full control.

They look at Apple and wish they had the same amount of control. Piracy is the small minority they point at to distract people when they take away your freedom to do what you want with the property you pay for.

You think they are thinking how much they could get if they did away with piracy. What they really are thinking is how much they could make if they could make your purchase obsolete the moment they can sell you a newer one to juice this quarters profits and lock you into a ecosystem that you can’t leave.

lordnikon ,

not open source but free to use for personal use and cross platform Obsidian.md uses flat files that can be synced using a number of file syncing tools or synced to get for version control

Big Tex is dead he caught fire roughly 10 years ago. the one there now is an impostor

can a state be named after interstate 35?

lordnikon ,

it was worse than that and even dumber the UK was a founding member and had extra perks. That other EU members didn’t get and they threw all that away. Even if they do join back they will never get that deal again.

lordnikon ,

It’s Insurrection not treason. Treason is very narrowly defined as giving Aid & Comfort to a foreign power. People misuse treason way too often.

The end of workplace loyalty: Why work feels so broken right now — and how it can be repaired (www.businessinsider.com)

In the two years I've been writing about Americans' changing relationship to work, there's one theme that's come up over and over again: loyalty. Whether my stories are about quiet quitting, or job-hopping, or leveraging a job offer from a competitor to force your boss to give you a raise, readers seem to divide into two groups....

lordnikon ,

It even goes beyond just that companies used to be about creating value for customers but with all the mergers and what I like to call finance fuckery like airlines being more banks that happen to own planes.

Companies selling things at a lost to drive out competitors and their revenue mostly comes from investors waiting for the company becomes a defacto monopoly and they then can raise prices that blow up the stock. Offload successful business with so much debt that they close at no fault of their own.

lordnikon ,

I would ask

how did we survive climate change?

and if we didn’t try to get any details we tried and didn’t work or wasn’t fast enough to try again for a better outcome but realizing I would create a bootstrap paradox I would get really depressed.

Then I would spend the rest of the time. Showing the traveler a good time as my time is much nicer then where they came from and I want to let them enjoy what they can before they goes back.

lordnikon ,

it’s even worse than that they write characters that are not in the world of star trek but written like they are fans of the star trek. that might work for a comedy like lower decks but it stunts growth of the franchise.

since we can’t make new stories or ask new questions. They are just stuck in a circle of reference and the bare minimum of a story / scavenger hunt to get to those references. Terry Matalas has said this himself.

But hey at least we have unedited versions of the originals unlike star wars and I hope all the actors got big paydays in their golden years.

lordnikon ,

it depends on if I heard a voice of that character before for example Batman is always Kevin Conroy and the joker is always Mark Hamill. another usecase is if I listened to the audio book then start reading a text book. Ray Potter shows up alot.

lordnikon ,

a substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.

by definition food is considered a drug, so no one I guess

lordnikon ,

the problem is food cost is more often than not the least expensive cost of a restaurant. especially a fast food restaurant. So giving you a large Fri vs small. is so small for them it’s not even noticeable from their cost. their loss comes from two things the sizes and price difference are only their to get you to buy the one with the beter profit margin. small and medium are only there to make you feel like you got value from buying the large. it cost more for the card stock Fri container than it does for the Fries.
