Way back when I used to go to the football with dad - kids under 5 could take the train for free, but weren’t allowed in the stadium, so I was 4 on the train, and 5 when we got to the stadium

Even assuming 25% of Twitter users are bots (probably a significant over estimate), and even if half of Twitter’s users quit in the next year, it would still be 150x bigger than mastodon

(Mastodon has ~1m MAUs, compared to ~421m for Twitter)

One of our cats kept getting out of our old house - took us a couple of weeks to work out that she’d found an access hatch into the subfloor that we didn’t know about in the back of a cupboard and worked out how to lift it up

How much do y'all spend on coffee a month?

My wife and I go through about 4lbs a month using mainly Chemex and Areopress. Used to get (decent) crummy coffee at Aldi and Grocery Outlet, occasionally splurging for local roasts at the coffee shops. Still, I calculate that’s about $35 or so a month on beans, Chemex filters should probably be calculated with how pricey they...

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

~2kg/month, currently spending ~$60NZD/kg - anywhere between 1 and 4 espressos a day for me depending on if I’m going into the office or not, and my wife drinks a jug of cold brew every ~week

In Germany (and other parts.od Europe as well to be fair) carts need you to put a coin in them to unchain them from their bay, which you get back when you chain them back up - so yeah, kinda, if you don’t put it back you loose your euro

As an additional point; “weird” isn’t a slur. A slur is an expression where the very words themselves are considered obscene - a slur is offensive, even when it is used to describe someone or something according to its strict definition.

There is no context where describing someone as a “removed” or a “retard” isn’t offensive. “Weird” isn’t like that, as you’ve pointed out - it’s being used as a simple insult, and it’s persistent because it seems to really annoy the people it is directed at

Edit: to further my point, one of my examples is so objectionable that it was automatically filtered from my post

Someone dumped her, soaking wet, in the lobby of a restaurant today

Someone just walked into the restaurant i work at, dumped this soaking wet kitten in the lobby, and left without saying a word. I just got a kitten this month, so i took her home with me since i have kitten supplies and everyone else at work has too many pets....

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Good on you for taking her in, but I’d suggest keeping her separated from your other cat until you can get a vet to look at her - there are a few nasties that feral cats tend to carry that you probably don’t want your other cat to catch

Thanks for the tips! I’m looking for something multi-purpose for LLM/stable diffusion messing about + transcoder for jellyfin - I’m guessing that there isn’t really a sweet spot for those 3. I don’t really have room or power budget for 2 cards, so I guess a P40 is probably the best bet?

Hah, I’ve pretty recently picked up an Epyc 7452, so not really looking for a new platform right now.

The Arc cards are interesting, will keep those in mind

If you are interested in different culture more than different language background, www.rnz.co.nz/programmes/black-sheep might be interesting

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I understand - fwiw, RNZ is the national (government backed) broadcaster, and has an explicit mandate to elevate the perspectives of iwi. Black Sheep specifically has done a few episodes about the musket wars and land confiscation that really don’t pull punches.

Another that might fit your brief: www.abc.net.au/listen/…/stuff-the-british-stole - from the ABC, and for the most part does a really good job of setting up the story with some historical context, then letting the people actually effected tell the rest

If a project is hosted on sourceforge then its a pretty good sign that the developer hasn’t progressed their craft since about 2005, which is a pretty big red flag for anything

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Kinda sorta. The Moriori settled in the Chatham Island (a few hundred km south of New Zealand) and were later victims of genocide at the hands of a Maori tribe during the musket wars. Previously it was assumed that the Moriori came to the Chathams in a separate wave of migration to the ones that brought the Maori, but more recent evidence seems to point to them arriving in New Zealand at about the same time, then moving south.

There were a few species that went extinct between the Maori arriving in NZ and the Europeans showing up, but expecting an ecosystem to not change when a new apex predator shows up is just “noble savage” BS.

Looks like it’s an x86_64 kernel though? So this is a VM - it’s not running as a paravirtualised system, it’s having to emulate everything from the CPU up?

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Basically none. The satellite link isn’t getting traffic directly between you and the server you are reaching - the satellite just relays the data to the nearest ground station that then uses the normal fibre network to get the rest of the way.

Even if you managed to reconfigure starlink to be a peering network rather than an access network, you’d still have the issue that the starlink network as a whole has orders of magnitude less bandwidth than even one under sea cable

I learnt a ton about Linux by fucking up my boot config and being too stubborn to just nuke and pave

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

A well built power supply will have a current limit on the connector to prevent the cable melting problem, but that means if you have a card that needs 200w, but only power it via 1 connector you are going to run into problems

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Yup - gaseous oxygen isn’t very dense so you’d need pretty large tanks, and liquid oxygen needs high pressure and very low temperatures to stay liquid - neither of which is terribly practical for an aircraft, and especially for safety systems that need to be super reliable without lots of maintenance

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Only if a dog does it.

Is that the plot of Air Bud? Idk, I only know the meme

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not that it won’t work - polarity doesn’t quite work like that in AC systems - it’s that as soon as you plug in one end, the other end has a pair of exposed metal contacts with mains voltage between them. One mistake, touching the contacts or having them come into something metal (like the ladder you are using to hang the Christmas lights) and someone dies

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, there is a reason why proper installations require actual transfer switches or at least a manual interlock to prevent both feeds being connected at the same time. I’m also not sure what would happen if your generator was out of phase with the grid when it reenergised, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be good

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

You can, but if forgetting to flip a switch can result in death, then you need a stronger safety control

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

That’s not the point. Normal, sensible people make mistakes because they are tired or stressed or got distracted or just plain unlucky, so things have to be designed so that people can make a mistake and it not instantly create a potentially lethal situation

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

The thing he seems to have forgotten is that unlike the automotive industry where the regulation is designed to allow companies to fuck up then fix things as long as they have the systems in place to fix the fuck up and to know when they fucked up, the medical device industry is very much designed so that the default stance is “this is dangerous and will kill people” unless you can prove otherwise

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

So politics aside, would you really put any money into a financial system run by someone with a proven track record of driving businesses into bankruptcy?

RegalPotoo ,
@RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

If you have a concrete example I’d love to hear it
