Same. I have the widget on my phone where my home screen has a little owl with motivational messages about keeping up your good learning habit. By 10PM it turns dark red and there is no more motivational message. Just an evil stare by the owl. That’s usually when I get around to doing my lesson…
Now if you become one with a chair for most of the day, expect it in your 40s. And expect an active 80+ year old to physically kick your ass by the time you hit 60.
I dunno about it being as much of an outlier nowadays. People seem to sit a lot for their jobs, and then glue themselves to their couch when they get home.
Getting up and walking around a bit goes a long way.
I believe flags are sorted alphabetically by how they are internally represented. All flags are a combination of two special letter-symbols. For the UK flag, these two symbols are “GB”, therefore the UK flag should be much earlier.
🇺🇸 (Flag of the USA [code: US]) ≠ 🇺🇲 (Flag of the US Outlying Islands [code: UM])
Yes, the first US flag, which most people pick, is actually the flag of the US Outlying Islands. Whenever you see someone use the US flag emoji, check whether they accidentally used the " wrong" one.
Essentially the Unicode consortium did not want to make an international uproar by acknowledging certain countries and not acknowledging others. So rather than there being flag emojis there are 26 characters (A through Z) and when you combine two you have a country. How to display these is up to the font. I believe the standard (or at least the de facto standard) is to use countries’ 2 letter ISO abbreviations. This also means the Unicode standard does not need to be changed for the addition or removal of countries.
So it gets tricky. Why do they have so many coded when only one would do? Well, how would they render the other when someone puts it in? Or what if there is a different font being used on the selector that renders them differently?
The consortium was forced to include flags, they never wanted to have them in first place, but they were technically already there when they inherited the curating of emoji. They are actively trying to find ways of getting rid of flags altogether. Too much politic flak all the time.
That kid is an asshole because cppreference is doing the lord’s work.
Also, I know that language choice is one of the most important decisions when starting a new project but, personally, I work on a highly performance sensitive project that’s written in PHP. If you think you need Rust to be performant or type safe then you don’t really know what you’re doing yet. It makes it easier and increases theoretical limits - that is all.
No, we just use good algorithmic approaches including an emphasis on lazy evaluation. It’d take out application like 20x as long to compute 2+2 compared to one written in C but computation in PHP isn’t our main bottleneck - it’s efficient network connection handling and psql query performance.
Our PHP code is maintainable and expressive that makes it much easier to tune performance where it counts.
Is this a new project that was intentionally started in PHP or something legacy? Any interesting benchmarks? Like minimal wire to wire network processing time and where the bottleneck is?
Our project was something that has evolved from a full web app into a PHP backend fronted by a reactish SPAish thing. Our spool up time to cache our website is 13 ms from a cold start (after provisioning and stuff) so we’re pretty good at horizontal scaling. Once cached our overhead is 7ms for framework things. Our page load times across the board calvary wildly with 25ms being our target time but with some very large reports stretching into the seconds range - on those slow pages all those previous numbers are essentially irrelevant and performance is dictated solely by how much we’re investing into query caching and tuning.
Personally I’m actually a big fan of PHP, it’s incredibly powerful and good with lists (and all good programming is list programming ;P). The typing is strong when enforced and weak when you choose. The lambda and reflection frameworks are robust and it has a number of interesting phpisms like magic functions and variable variables.
It’s a choice left up to developer but you can have static and runtime type checking enabled for as many functions as you desire. Theoretically you can have collection subtype checking but I’d say that PHP is still quite frail here as proper collection typing lacks any template-style typing but needs dedicated collection types.
“We fucked up, and that’s why I’m here to cry about people being mean to me on the internet again. Also I’m super not sorry and it definitely will happen again” -Linus
You can watch our progress transparently… on floatplane”
Is all I loosely heard from it. Shame his newly appointed CEO has to deal with this, I feel like he should have been the only one in the video. It would have put extra value and emphasis on his message, and cut out all the blame passing and job title responsibilities; they could have dealt with all the other stuff separately. They shouldn’t need to put their staff out there to dry like that (even if they’re management), the issue is blatantly deeper rooted.
If they’re trying to address their accuracy, management processes, or talk about video content burnout that influence their staff and viewers, it should have been short and sweet. They should have posted an update video to show us the progress. Not make promises and jokes and put half of it behind a paywall.
They wrote and uploaded their apology so quickly, they didn’t even let the fallout settle before more controversy came inevitably to light. Now they need to eventually address that in a video too seeing as there’s an investigation. Though it would have been hard to comment on year old incidences without an investigation to be fair.
I was told that when making apologies don’t use too many if at all any reasons… Justifying your action with excuses means you felt there was an exception. They shouldn’t have gone into specifics and just said “God damn we really ballsed that one up”.
Even their apology video with the dbrand plug-in at the end, pretty cringey. They’re like that Key and Peele slap ass skit, they need to plug-in their sponsors like an addiction. If they wouldn’t have mentioned which sponsor, then yeah stupid joke to lighten the mood, but they had to mention dbrand.
Perhaps. But a rather large issue arises when your content is generated primarily by users who wouldn’t want to pay for a service.
There is also the issue where if you are having to pay to get around interaction limits is it really free speech? Or just limited to those that can afford to pay?
I think these limits were increased to a point where they are not really bad or they were removed. The point of them was to prevent scraping to train AIs
medium started doing the same shit, sometimes it has interesting articles I’d like to read, but then they started putting in behind registration so I just no longer open medium links.
Maybe we’ll finally be cool enough to get banned - Klanned Karenhood
Oh, you could have been that cool already. Just do as Ijeoma Oluo did.
Provoke the racists. They will come flooding into your inbox with death threats and hate speech.
Report the messages to Meta so they can say, “doesn’t violate our community standards.”
Screenshot the messages and Meta’s enabling response, and post them publicly on your Facebook page to show how seriously Meta takes right-wing death threats.
Done. Banned. You could have been cool all along, Klanned Karenhood. You just have to go after the right people.
Same on Twitter. Back pre-Elron I was suspended for the stupidest crap: I said I thought Trump would be too old to run for office next year, as he lived an unhealthy lifestyle. That was “wishing harm or violence”, like, what? I didn’t voice an opinion about whether I was all happy about that or something, just simply made that statement. Then someone was joking about the Will Smith thing and something about Kid Rock and I said Hillary Clinton should be the one to slap Kid Rock. That was also horribly violent of me. I appealed and they said NO, YOu are VERY BAD, SORRY. What a waste of time. It’s offensive, too. Meanwhile I’ve reported things like people saying vile racist insults and literally saying they want someone to die, and I get the reply that sorry, they reviewed it and the comment was fine. I’m sure the process is even worse now.
The thing is that liberals feel the need to obsess over “fairness.”
If you really ban hate speech from a place, then it will appear to mostly be inhabited by more left leaning people. The vast majority of hate speech comes from the right.
But at forms WANT those right WI gers to drive engagement, so they don’t enforce their TOS on open racism so long as it’s a conservative doing it. But if you’re on the left and repost it to criticize it you get dinged.
It’s bullshit that shows how many companies are run by fascists who don’t bother hiding it anymore. But the liberals eat it up because it wouldn’t be “fair” to ban conservatives “for their conservative views.”
They also have no interest in removing spam and scams. Every time I log in to check in on family that doesn’t believe any form of contact exists outside of Facebook, I end up reporting at least 3 posts in the five minute period that I’m there for being spam/scam posts in groups
in general, things do exist out of the U.S, its just people in the U.S do it more publicly. Its like racism, and how some people think U.S is the most racist due to media and social media, its actually very far from that on the general scale of things when compared to other countries.
In Australia I knew I guy who was a SovCit and he would do stupid things like quote the bill of rights. We’d say “what bill of rights?” Australia doesn’t have one. All his info came from the US and he just followed it with realising none of it was relevant in a different country.
True. But things like the UCC are real laws. Sovcits just hilariously misinterpret them. There is no such law in other countries. Plus sovcit stuff is based on common law. It makes even less sense in civil law jurisdictions.
Fortunately I haven’t bothered keeping up with him for many years, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he was doing that. And protesting vaccinations too probably.
There is a similar movement to SovCits that is at least properly adapted to other countries (specifically the Commonwealth and Ireland’s) laws called “Freeman on the Land.”
that would of course be count Binface, who is a space alien and thus obviously is only subject to any human law in so far as that he chooses to go along with it.
It’s a commonly spread fiction that oil comes from dinosaurs because when people hear fossils, their brains immediately jump to dinosaurs. However, that’s not the case.
The truth may be less exciting to some, but oil and other fossil fuels are not actually formed from the remains of dinosaurs. The oil we’re drilling and pumping to the surface as fuel is formed from diatoms, small organisms such as algae and bacteria that lived long before dinosaurs even existed. Source
Which of course led to him being single term because he wasn’t ruthless enough for a voting public that would rather have a former actor run the country into the ground while paying loveable grandpa to hide the evil.
But that wasn’t because he couldn’t lead the country, just that the public loves to fall for confident blowhards that tell them what they want to hear.
There isn’t a single US president in living memory without a litany of war crimes on their head, and probably going back further but I don’t particularly feel like going back to pre-WWII history because just why bother at this point?
Jimmy Carter was good at lip-service, not in reality. And honestly, I don’t even think it’s because he was a particularly nasty person - although I wouldn’t be surprised, he was a politician - it’s just the job forces you to become a war criminal. That’s what happens when you volunteer to supervise the war crimes factory.
EDIT: Actually, if you want to go back further, read one of the US military’s most decorated generals on what the military’s true purpose is, written in the interwar period: archive.org/details/WarIsARacket
Edit 2: before anyone else wants to pile on this and call it all bullshit because they read one item and it wasn’t genocidal enough for them, at least read as far as East Timor, 1977. The list is chronological, if you get bored after the first item I’m sorry, but I’m not spoon-feeding you the whole article.
“Basically a saint” because he only sent aid to juntas and brutal genocidal regimes as opposed to what, exactly? Ordering the bombs dropped himself? I notice you didn’t even answer a single charge, just called it all bullshit. Why? I guess we should all just trust your judgement on the matter and call it closed?
Also, if you think he was “basically a saint” even though his administration still backed genocide, then I think you’re kind of accepting my premise that “That’s what happens when you volunteer to supervise the war crimes factory.”
What are you talking about? Please be specific. All I’m getting are vague “nuh-uh” answers. If you want to actually convince anyone that you have a point, you need to make it.
The first charge (edit: it was the third charge, I do apologise for expecting anyone to read more than a few paragraphs), was his support for Indonesia’s invasion of East Timor. That’s not a “both sides” kind of issue. It’s an invasion and ensuing genocide. It’s not hard to judge what the right thing to do is there, but the US chose their global strategic goals over not genocide.
So like… what are you talking about? Please be specific.
William Blum writes in Killing Hope: U.S. Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II that Carter, who had been in office for only two months, was reluctant to involve his administration in a far-reaching intervention whose scope and length could not be easily anticipated.
However, Carter did provide “non-lethal” aid, while he did not protest as European countries offered military aid, and Morocco sent several thousand of its US-trained military forces to aid Mobutu.
“President Carter asserted on more than one occasion that the Zaire crisis was an African problem, best solved by Africans, yet he apparently saw no contradiction to this thesis in his own policy, nor did he offer any criticism of France or Belgium, or of China, which sent Mobutu a substantial amount of military equipment,” writes Blum. [1]
He didn’t criticize, what an absolute bloodthirsty monster!
I apologise for getting a minor detail wrong about the order of items in the list, I underestimated how critically important the order of items in that list was to you.
For instance it seems like you saw a chronological list and when the very first item - which is actually quite damning and from which you omitted the inciting incident of a CIA-backed assassination - wasn’t a full-on war crime, you decided it was all frivolous. I can see why it’s so easy to get someone like you to ignore war crimes when you’re that unwilling to even read about them. I called out East Timor by name and you still ignored it. I can’t hold your hand through the entire article. History is for people who are willing to do some reading.
Anyway, if you go just a few items down the list, you read this:
The genocidal slaughter reached its peak in 1977, On March 1, 95 members of the Australian Parliament sent a letter to Carter claiming the Indonesian troops were carrying out “atrocities” and asking the American President “to comment publicly on the situation in East Timor.” [3]
The response was crickets. Carter ramped up aid with funding and weapons to the murderous Indonesian regime, brazenly flaunting the human rights requirements imposed on American aid.
So that’s a war crime, even by the extremely lax rules imposed by the US on themselves and to which they will never hold themselves accountable.
Oh look, you edited your first post with a snide remark!
What are you talking about? Please be specific. All I’m getting are vague “nuh-uh” answers. If you want to actually convince anyone that you have a point, you need to make it.
The first charge (edit: it was the third charge, I do apologise for expecting anyone to read more than a few paragraphs),
Then you offer an ‘apology’ for getting a detail wrong…
I apologise for getting a minor detail wrong about the order of items in the list, I underestimated how critically important the order of items in that list was to you.
My comment made some actual points, but you chose to be petty and make this comment instead of actually engaging with those points.
Don’t worry, the apology was insincere as you guessed, because the mistake was in fact not a very important one. But your obstinate, petulant avoidance of the war crimes that I know you’ve now read about directly says everything anyone needs to know about where you stand on the issue.
It’s quite clear that you don’t accept my apology, and that that was what you chose to focus on. This seems like a pretty clear admission that you have nothing of worth to say on the matter. Well, not anything so gracious as that, but you wouldn’t make a comment like this if you did have anything worthwhile to say, so I’ll take it.
