My dad has had the single fucking loudest alarm clock for literally my entire life. It’s such a god awful racket. It had to be, because my dad has the worst snoring I’ve heard in my life. Man sounds like a chainsaw, and you can hear him clear across the house. My mom would sleep directly through it all. It’s wild.
I think they’re a great format to buy, but nowadays not that great to use. They offer the best audio quality of all physical media (fight me, vinyl enthusiasts), are really easy to handle (on par with cassettes), offers track selection (later cassette decks could detect silence but this doesn’t work for gapless tracks), the equipment is rather cheap nowadays, it’s a digital format without DRM… red book CD might be the best consumer media industry has ever created, my only gripe in the modern world is that its sampling rate is a bit off today’s 48kHz.
However, I only rip the CDs to lossless and then rarely take them out of my cupboard anymore, don’t even have a CD player. Using CDs in a mobile setting is a whole different beast, it requires a buffer and can also damage the discs in the worst case. But at home, pressed CDs live very long without any degradation in sounds quality, regardless of use. And ironically, buying them is often cheaper than buying non-physical only, though it often means that you end up with tracks you don’t want. But that’s an issue all physical media has.
Hipsters claim vinyl sounds better than digital, despite a complete lack of evidence, but at least there’s a measurable difference between analog and digital, if only in the additional dirty noise produced by the hardware. With CDs, though… digital is digital. There’s literally no difference between a wav and a CD; in fact, you can get more bits in a flac recording if it’s recorded right, which would only be degraded by recording to a CD.
So, is it the form factor? Some tactile benefit? Or you like the mandatory ritual of switching out CDs every 60 minutes? Why do you like CDs… because it isn’t for the sound.
driving. my car has a sort-old cd player, no smart-stuff. i dont like to connect my phone everytime i get in the car. cds are just convenient for my case :-)
I drive a 20 year old Toyota, and swapped out the double din for a carplay compatible unit for $299, plus the cost of a custom wiring harness. You get the best of technology, without the worst of car manufacturers poaching your data. I still have my book of CDs that I compiled over 25 years or so, but without the headache of having to load disks while I’m driving. The phone connects automatically when I turn the car on. I’ve only had to connect to it once, when I first installed the new head unit.
FWIW, the factory stereo I replaced had a cassette / 6 disk cd deck in it. I just don’t like swapping disks when I’m driving 75 mph on the freeway.
That reminds me of a work van I used to drive where the cd player would overheat and stop after a while so I had to stop at an electronics store to get one of those Bluetooth to radio cigarette lighter things
Third party client support. Specifically alternate web UI’s focused on desktop like Alexandrite because if I’m being honest here, I think the comment nesting in Lemmy’s offical web UI lacks enough distinction to be useful on desktop (its clearly optimized for mobile browsers). Following conversations can be frustrating on desktop. Without Alexandrite I’d most likely be a mobile app (Voyager) user only.
Edit: No, third party web front ends for reddit do not work anymore. Remember those pesky API changes that went into effect in July and were the entire reason the majority of us are on lemmy now? Yeah, that didn’t just kill off third party mobile apps.
A lot of that functionality no longer works after the API changes. Even in the GitHub of some of those, they mention some basic features won’t work, e.g. private messages.
Because developers aren’t willing to pay the new API fees, not because of technical limitations. So that doesn’t take away at all from the fact that 3rd party frontends for reddit exist.

That’s not entirely true. Some of the previously available API hooks literally cannot be used by third parties anymore, even if you pay. Just go look at the reddit developer posts discussing it.
But also not really relevant to the initial point. Not being able to watch porn from reddit via 3rd party apps is quite different statement than there being no 3rd party apps.

I’m personally not using any reddit related apps anymore and only vaguely followed the whole API debacle. It’s becoming shitty which is the reason I quit it.
But saying 3rd party apps or frontends don’t exist for reddit is ridiculous. They do, it doesn’t matter if they suck now or cost money. I was just pointing out an error, not trying to argue for or against lemmy/reddit. But apperently some people really took offence with that.
And that was just going through top google results. Not all of them might still work, some of them now only work properly if you self-host with your own API key. I also found some apps on my phone that had recent reviews that said they still worked.

Have I personally avoided going to the hospital? Absofuckinglutely. Unless I’m in immediate danger of dying I’ll figure it out myself. Do I do it anyway so I can pay my rent? Yep.

Purely anecdotal, since I can only draw from my own personal pool, but I don’t have a single friend or colleague who feels even remotely secure in their life. We’re all one emergency away from bankruptcy.

I’ve never seen this much unionization and union positive thinking in my life. Though most Americans do actually want universal healthcare, anytime it comes up as an issue in the national conversation there is such massive propaganda against it, articles talking about things like ‘death panels’, hypothetical committees under more socialized healthcare systems that will decide who lives and dies, or that you’d have to wait hours at the ER. Ridiculous things like that. It’s seen as a ‘left’ issue, if you are on the right or conservative in the US you won’t be as likely to support universal healthcare, which does align with one right-wing view of ‘poor people should die more’.

Many disorders originate from stress, especially if the stress is severe and prolonged. The medical community needs to have a greater appreciation for the significant role that stress may play in various diseases and then treat the patient accordingly using both pharmacological (medications and/or nutraceuticals) and non-pharmacological (change in lifestyle, daily exercise, healthy nutrition, and stress reduction programs) therapeutic interventions.
The effects of having low grade stressor like that, combined with non-federal sick leave nor vacation and predatory corporate labor laws are what you witness in the US every day. Precipitously declining mental health for everyone, reduced social and coping skills. Commonplace violence and rage and incredible rates of anxiety and depression and resultant medication.
Yep. I make ok money and have insurance. Things being what they are, rent has skyrocketed over the past couple years. Food seems to be coming down in price but for a while there it was pretty alarming. I haven’t had a significant raise in about 3 years to keep up with cost of living increases. Choices must be made and if life and limb aren’t in immediate danger, I choose to not have a bill of several thousand dollars for something like a few stitches and/or fight with my insurance company over coverage.
For our northern cousins, an illustrative story. I was attacked by a dog and with my arm and leg bleeding everywhere my first call was to my wife to get her to come pick me up because I knew an ambulance would be insanely expensive, and my second call was to insurance to find out if I could go to the hospital instead of urgent care. They sent me to urgent care, where they told me it was the worst attack they’d ever seen that wasn’t on the face.
The kicker is that I even have GOOD insurance, but that’s the reality of not knowing if it’s gonna bankrupt you or be covered or not: hesitation. That’s the reality of having years of habit-forming second-guessing when you had bad insurance, or when with good insurance and a tight budget. Imagine what is like for people with bad or no insurance.
My housemate lost his awesome mom when he was like, 10, because of that. She refused to go to the hospital because she couldn’t afford it, and it got infected. Fuck this country.

Effectively, yes. “Electrolytes” is a collective term for the ions that help move stuff into and out of your cells. These are primarily sodium and potassium, although calcium also plays a role. Sodium is the most important of these for sports drinks, because it is the one you most lose through sweat.
Unfortunately, most sports drinks don’t really contain enough to balance out heavy sweating, because sodium salt (aka normal salt) tastes, unsurprisingly, salty. If a drink had the right balance of sodium, it would be noticeably salty. Gatorade has one line of drinks that do that, and Pedialyte is specially made for the correct balance. Sports drinks really jack up the sugar to help hide the salt taste.
Most sports drinks, rather than having the sodium you need to replace sweat, instead jack up the potassium (think Prime and it’s advertised 843mg of electrolytes, 700mg of which is potassium). This doesn’t really replace the electrolytes you need, but it also doesn’t make the drink nearly as salty.
When you see “electrolytes”, you should flip around to the nutrition label, which must list the actual amounts of sodium and potassium. This will tell you if it will actually help you recover from activity, or if it’s just more sugar water and advertising.

why is sodium so important? Because your cells use a mechanism called “osmosis” to move water back and forth. Water molecules naturally move from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration. In the cell, this means that water will go in to the cell if the inside of the cell has more sodium than the outside, and leave the cell when the outside has more than the inside.
When you sweat, two things happen: you lose water and you lose sodium you lose more water than sodium, so your blood becomes saltier. Water moves from inside your cells to your blood; this is what it means to be “dehydrated”. To counter it, you need to dilute your blood and increase the amount of sodium in your cells. Hence, drinking water with sodium can help replenish both and speed recovery from dehydration.
Sodium is also used for all the electrical activity of our body (such as thinking and moving and living…), and is fundamental in adsorption of nutritions in digestion. Sodium, potassium and calcium are so important that it is difficult to even list all processes they are involved.

Since what you really need to replace is sodium, you could just make salt water. But there are a lot of products that make it easier My preferred are Salt Stick caps… It’s a tablet so you don’t need to taste it at all
Pedialyte or Gatorlyte are both balanced sports drinks and I’d say they’re “better” than standard Gatorade if the goal is hydration exclusively, but they taste like salt water with flavoring added

I’m a bit curious in this too. I don’t have an answer for you but totally anecdotal, I do notice I feel noticeably better even just halfway through a liquid IV which I’ve never noticed with any other sports drinks.
Eh, anything that close to what your blood is at normal levels works out pretty well. Liquid IV and LMNT and so forth do pretty well… But depending on your activity, acclimation, and the temp, you might need several packets to make up. I run, so I am very acclimated, and that makes your sweat more. So in summer when I do multi day hikes, I take electrolyte tablets with me. It can really sneak up, so just swallowing a salt tablet makes it a lot easier to balance.

This is quite true. The only people who need to worry about this on the regular are endurance athletes (and people with equivalent jobs). Anything where you are working at an elevated heart rate and sweating for hours or days. Not common for joggers or people who shoot hoops after work
I actually take electrolyte tablets with me when I hike. Hyponatremia (having dangerously low salt levels) can really sneak up on you when you are hiking in the heat for four or five days straight. You keep hydrated, but there just isn’t enough salt in your food to replace what you lose. Dropping a straight tablet of salt can really help balance that
Back in high school I had some friends tour an NFL stadium. They got to see the field and locker rooms and all. I didn’t get to go with them, so while they were in the locker rooms they stole a bunch of these powdered electrolyte drinks they had out for the players and brought some back for me. I remeber trying them and they tasted like straight sweat. It makes sense, but they were gross. Same flavor as licking someone’s forehead.
Gatorlyte. It has 490mg sodium and 350mg potassium per bottle. It has that very distinct Pedialyte flavor that tells you it’s legit. I can get it at the convenience store next to the local hiking trail, but not the one on main street
Well, during heavy excercise, a lot more than salt is lost. Another thing lost is blood glucose. It can help you recover to replece the glucose as well, so the sugar in sports drinks can be useful as well.
You could buy ORS (oral rehydration salt) from a pharmacy and mix it in water. Make sure the packet follows the WHO formula, and that you add the correct amount of water. If these are not available, the WHO recommends 3 g salt and 18 g sugar per litre (roughly 1 teaspoon and 6 teaspoons per litre) of water. But this will not have potassium and other minerals.
Also this explains why after I have a particularly hard day at work, the thing that makes me feel the most regulated is a piece of steak that’s very heavily salted.
“Go for X” was somewhat common, including in media. I think OP was mishearing that. There’s virtually no way to differentiate between “gopher” and a rushed, casual “go for” in speech.
