the edgy kids downvoting this have probably never had this kind of reflection

lseif ,

i highly doubt we will ever answer the biggest questions about life and the universe

lseif ,

in australia, we say f*** ice because its another word for crystal meth

lseif ,

because not everyone likes to swear. i know, shock horror!

lseif ,

sorry, are you the swear police ??

the phrase that people are repeating is not ‘screw ice’ or ‘screw the police’. ‘f***’ is much closer to the original. i just prefer not to type out the actual letters; is that so bad ?

lseif ,

exactly! do people expect windows to scan every local file too??!

lseif ,

not zig

if its acceptable to force javascript onto the backend and everywhere else, then why not write the frontend in rust, or anything else than can compile to wasm ?

lseif ,

javascript cannot be compiled natively for the backend or desktop either…

also libraries like wasm bindgen allow a developer to write almost no javascript. and i wouldnt could a few lines of bootstrapping.

im dont advocate for wasm when its not necessary. nor do i advocate for backend js when its not necessary.

lseif ,

my point is that languages have their places.

javascript is great for the frontend. not just because it’s the only choice, but it’s also a lot easier to write code for ui than say, C or rust.

however i do not see a reason why it needs to run on servers or desktop apps, bar a few cases. i know node is popular, but i think fullstack devs just like to have everything in the same language, even if it makes it harder to use and slower to run.

likewise C, rust, go, whatever, are great for backends, embedded etc, but they shouldnt be ran on in the browser, unless there is a specific reason like heavy computation with little dom interaction.

just because a barrier does not exist doesnt mean that we should write programs in a language not designed for the domain.

lseif ,

i actually agree, but i think its more the issue that modern websites are designed like desktop apps. having a weakly typed and flexible langauage like js is fine when youre only adding a little interactivity to an otherwise mostly functional website.

grapheneos on a secondhand pixel 5 which was about 280$AUD. though i probably should have gotten a newer model considering the 5 is nearing end of life for GOS

lseif ,

photoshop, illustrator, etc are genuinely good programs though. the ‘linux alternatives’ just arent usually as powerful or easy to use.

this is coming from a linux and foss fanatic, btw. i dont use adobe, but i probably would if i was in a creative industry

lseif ,

if it is considering the average for all of history, then the rate of change would just have to be consistently greater than 0, right ?

lseif ,

If it isn’t mandated, regulated, and enforced by law

and even then, dont be so sure…

lseif OP ,

how am i supposed to know how italians speak. i’ve never seen one

lseif OP ,

is that the new model ?

lseif OP ,

like reverse vampires ?

lseif ,

they were just asking everyone to chill out and relax

lseif ,

regardless, its a big red flag for a poorly designed api

lseif ,

its pride month you cant say ghat word

lseif ,

well, defragging my ssd was the only thing that let me shrink the windows partition safely when i dualbooted… tho maybe thats just windows being funky

lseif ,

i see

lseif ,

i used Defraggler, after nothing else worked to allow diskmgmt to shrink it, including all the normal stuff like disabling page files, snapshots, etc. it shows me how it was reordering parts of the ssd.

lseif ,

okay but which ‘if’ is ending ??

lseif ,

too few. i like to have a nice big gap on the left of the code so theres a place to write notes when i screenshot the code

lseif ,

7 times a week ??? honey thats an addiction…

lseif ,

the “mental harm” is having to walk around horny all the time, constantly thinking of sex, and affecting your interactions

this is not a problem which normal people face. if you are constantly thinking about sex, you may have an addiction or an otherwise unhealthy relationship with sex

lseif ,

i like to think of C++ as a testing ground for new features and paradigms. to see how some concepts will handle in production.

lseif ,

…or shipping to MSDOS

lseif ,

“yes i would love to tar -xvjpf my files”

– statement dreamed up by the utterly insane

How easy is it to switch back to windows?

I’m considering switching to linux but I’m not a computer savvy person, so I wanted to have the option to switch back to windows if unforeseen complications (I only have 1 pc). Is it just a download on usb and install? And what ways can I get the product key or “cleaner” debloated versions.

lseif ,

ESPECIALLY if you have gotten used to a fancy window manager or custom hotkeys… the amount of times i go “mod+q … oh, right… alt+f4”

lseif ,

i use a custom kill script with overrides such as dont kill firefox, and properly kill discord. then $mod+shift+q to use the standard kill as a fallback

lseif ,

i like ur optimism. we need more ppl to do this.

lseif ,

that, and that its often not the best use of time to map out the entire project structure in uml before u even write a method…

lseif ,

Inheriting from inherited class should be forbidden.

so an interface with state?

lseif ,

i agree that more money should be put into improving public transport

lseif ,

but that doesnt make the ‘factoid’ any less true…

lseif ,

its referring to images and recordings of space. there are hundreds of pictures of other galaxies, in remarkable definition, but no images of most of the ocean floor. we know more about what is actually out there, as well as what the planets and stars are made of, how far away they are, how they interact with each other, etc. we can know about something without physically visiting it

lseif OP ,

i find it much more reliable. its also cheaper
