I have decided that it is safe to assume that everyone is an idiot, including me, and behave accordingly: act deliberately with an open mind, making no assumptions, and remain curious.

Frank Herbert’s Bene Gesserits had a tenet in which they remained mindful of the naivety of all people, including themselves, ostensibly to prevent allowing hubris to allow poor decisions.

Coming back around to my point: I think we’d all get along a lot better if we’d all agree we’re all stupid, but we can get better.

JohnnyEnzyme ,

These are good points and good techniques IMO, and to add on–

Humans have always been drowning in the unknown, hence our chronic set of coping mechanisms, but on top of that, in this high-tech information civilisation we currently live in, now we’re drowning in information, as well. Which leads to some big problems, of course.

As in-- it takes considerable effort, honesty and openness to form a decent perspective on most subjects these days, particularly significant ones, and because of that hurdle, I fear that most people (you, I, everyone) are inclined to ‘settle’ for flawed understandings of topics, even with best intentions. Or at worst, some of us form whatever ludicrous opinions simply because it makes us feel better / at peace / self-righteous.

Point is-- it seems like the world just has way too much information for people to handle these days, effectively worsening our collective mental health and communal behavior, one might say.

Anything by Ayn Rand. She’s a terrible author and most people are more interested in showing that they could have read The Fountainhead than actually reading that unfun, meandering garbage.

I tried to read the Fountainhead twice when I was a teenager and I never got more than a third of the way. It felt like watching an old person try to remember their shopping list

twice_twotimes ,

I read The Fountainhead in a high school English class and then got super into Ayn Rand and read Atlas Shrugged and some of her other stuff on my own. What actually happened was that I was a child in the Florida Public School System and so 1) didn’t understand what capitalism was, 2) couldn’t recognize terrible writing, and 3) was enjoying how proud my dad was for once.

Now I’m in my 30s and I can’t bring myself to throw away books at all, but also refuse to give them away and put them back out into the world for other dumbasses and/or impressionable children to find. They live on a bookshelf in my back room strategically positioned so that even if someone did go into that room they’d have to dig through a bunch of French textbooks and ancient American Girl books to find them.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Agreed. Apparently some people have issues with it but ours has been running pretty steadily every morning for the last 1.5 year or so. At some point the charging contacts were a bit dull and it started giving errors but otherwise the maintenance is minimal.

Oh but I can heavily recommend buy extra filters and when doing a bit more thorough clean of the dustbin just vacuum out the filter with another strong vacuum, or slap it on the floor a couple times to really get the dust out. Doing this and the suckpower increases tremendously and it also seems to more efficiently pack the dust in the bin by just having stronger suction, i guess

brygphilomena ,

My robot vacuum gets triggered any time I leave the house. Go out for dinner? Go to work? Grab coffee? Come back to a vacuumed house.

That doesn’t work for me in the iRobot ecosystem; it always finds some excuse to just stop in the middle of the job and then “forget” what is was doing. It then sends out the mop even though it never finished vacuuming.

If I didn’t work from home there’d be no way they’d ever clean everything.

I know it’s better than nothing, but the reason I haven’t bothered to get one is that the vacuum guy on Reddit made me a solid believer in German bagged vacuums like Sebo. Almost everything else is exhausting dust everywhere it goes.

I live in a WhatsApp dominated country. Never have I ever been contacted by a recruiter or potential employer via WA, much less so from Signal or Telegram. First contact is either a phone call or an email. At some places I’ve worked on, WA has actually been banned and secure communication for work matters is only allowed via the official ICT managed channels. That was a security sensible company though. Other companies allow WA communication except for confidential information that should only move through company servers.

centof OP ,

we ‘shouldn’t’ try to hide the bad things we’ve done when we teach history

The keyword here is shouldn’t. Most people don’t do lots of things they should.

Not out of malice but simply laziness, it is a lot easier to just default to the norm and go on. Try comparing what should get done in politics(campaign promises) to what actually gets done in washington. In short what should happen and what actually happens are two different things in a lot of areas.

LordOfTheChia , to nostupidquestions in Why don't we pump seawater into deserts to revive them?

First off, the water would need to be desalinated or you would ensure the land would be unsuitable for farming (and really growing anything) for generations.

Also, sand doesn’t hold water. In fact, when planting trees and other bushes, if you want more drainage, you typically add rocks and sand.

Second, most plants need non-sandy soil to grow on (palm trees and other beach bushes and plants aside) though those grow in areas that have lots of rain already.

Thirdly, the soil will need bacteria to aid the plants in obtaining nutrients and breaking down waste (dead leaves, dead plantlife, etc).

The way to do it is to look at a couple of projects that are fighting against desertification in Africa:

  1. The Great Green Wall …nationalgeographic.org/…/great-green-wall/
  2. Using compostable waste to fertilize soil jstories.media/…/greening-the-desert-with-trash

You’ll notice that many of these projects start at the edges of deserts. Instead of relying on pumping water onto sandy soil (which would just suck up the water as sand doesn’t hold water that well) they focus on extending the non desert ecosystem onto the desert so that the new soil will absorb water better, the weather over the newly terraformed area will be less dry, and it will eventually be self sustaining.

d3Xt3r , (edited ) to asklemmy in How is Lemmy so good and you guys all so awesome? FUCK!

It’s only good because of all the hard work being put in by the moderators. Unfortunately, behind the scenes, Lemmy sucks and is severely lacking in moderation tools to deal with spammers, trolls and sick people who post illegal content.

See this post for instance, I feel pretty bad for the mods who have to deal with such stuff: beehaw.org/post/7943139

@hsl@wayfarershaven.eu avatar

It’s not just the mods but the admins going to lengths to keep their instances clean. The awfulness outlined in that post means I’m not sure I should keep hosting my own instance.

d3Xt3r ,

Indeed, it’s not really a good idea to run your own instance if you’re not prepared to deal with such content. Many small instance admins have shutdown their instances for this very reason.

There was a patch merged recently which disabled caching of federated images, but I believe it still needs some work. Some discussion around that over here: sh.itjust.works/post/3962112 including an interesting comment suggesting rerouting /pictrs/ path to 404, so nginx won’t serve any images.

  • Valmond ,

Where were that? In the US?

    iByteABit ,

I am biased saying this, but I really don’t think Lemmy is bad behind the scenes. On the contrary, I think it’s revolutionary from a technological perspective, not only because of the Fediverse but because of the way it’s implemented and all the great new technologies used.

Keep in mind that this is a FOSS project, and there is obviously no budget to be hiring moderation teams for CSAM like software giants do.

CSAM was an obvious problem from the start, but when it comes down to it, it’s a moderator job and not a job for the actual software to do.

Thankfully there are new tools now to help moderators deal with CSAM that are possibly going to be incorporated to Lemmy afaik.

TLDR: Don’t blame the software for people being shit

    d3Xt3r , (edited )

Sorry, but I disagree. Note that I don’t disagree with the idea or the technology itself (and the concept of Fediverse), the problem is the current state of development. Saying that it’s the moderators job doesn’t absolve the responsibility of the software, when the software, in it’s current state, doesn’t really provide any decent tools for moderation and user access controls.

CSAM was never a problem on well-configured traditional forums, which were based on forum software such as Invision, vBulletin etc. To elaborate, in traditional forums, you’d get a LOT of controls for filtering out the kind of users who post such content. For instance, most forums won’t even let you post until you complete an interactive tutorial first (reading the rules and replying to a bot indicating you’ve understood them etc). On top of that, you can have various levels of restrictions, eg, someone with less than 100 posts, or an account less than a month old may not be able to post any links or images etc. Also, you can have a trust system on some forums, where a mod can mark your account as trusted or verified, granting you further rights. You can even make it so that a manual moderator approval is required before image posting rights are granted. In this instance, a mod would review your posting history and ensure that your posts genuinely contributed to the community and you’re unlikely to be a troll/karma farmer account etc.

So, short of accounts getting compromised/hacked, it’s very difficult to have this sort of stuff happen on a well-configured traditional forum.

I used to be a mod on a couple of popular forums back in the day, and I even ran my own server for a few years (using Invision Power Board), and never once have I had to deal with such content.

The fact is Lemmy, in it’s present state, is woefully inadequate to deal with such content. Dealing with CSAM should never be a volunteer mod’s job - that stuff can scar you for life, or even trigger PTSD/bad memories for those who might’ve suffered abuse in their forgotten past. If people are involved, it should be a job for professionals who’re trained to deal with this stuff.

Once again, I don’t disagree with the general idea or the concept of Lemmy, it’s just unfortunate timing the Reddit exodus happened when the software was essentially an alpha.

    iByteABit ,

I agree that CSAM protection is lacking, but the software is not an alpha. As a platform I use it just as much as I used to use Reddit and usually it’s much faster, more enjoyable and not profit driven.

CSAM protection is essential, but it’s a very hard problem to solve and naturally it takes time. Feature wise though, it’s constantly improving and showing how powerful FOSS can be when enough people are interested in it.

I agree that CSAM needs to be fixed as soon as possible, I’m just pointing out that despite this huge problem, the software is otherwise doing very well and improving faster and faster as more people join in.

    d3Xt3r ,

the software is not an alpha. As a platform I use it just as much as I used to use Reddit and usually it’s much faster, more enjoyable and not profit driven.

That’s because you’re only seeing it from the eyes of a user. Talk to any admin of a big instance and you’ll see how inadequate it is. Or just head over to Beehaw, they have made some very detailed statements on how much of a nightmare Lemmy is, and on the current bleak state of development.

    TWeaK ,

Yeah I agree. Lemmy obviously isn’t at the level reddit is, but reddit has had nearly 2 decades of development with a larger userbase.

I certainly would like to see Lemmy development happen a bit more quickly, and in particular better 3rd party/mod tools (I REALLY want a RES for Lemmy), but I don’t think we’re in a bad place on the Lemmy timeline.

    30mag ,

Can we do anything to help with that?

    d3Xt3r ,

Besides contributing actual code… not really. You can donate money which will help with the upkeep of servers, but that’s not really an issue with most instances. No amount of money can compensate someone (normal) for dealing with the trauma associated with such content. So yeah, the only thing that can really help right now is tools for moderation and user access controls.

    30mag ,

    Besides contributing actual code…

    Maybe I can do that.

    30mag ,

Unfortunately, behind the scenes, Lemmy sucks and is severely lacking in moderation tools to deal with spammers, trolls and sick people who post illegal content.

Maybe this is a silly question, but what sort of tools would be useful?

The big clubs are all an organized crime syndicate. How bad the situation will be mostly depend on your exact location. Especially with the Hell's Angels the involvement in organized crime depends a lot on the exact charter. Some just do illegal gambling, some light narcotics and gun trades while others are also involved in human trafficking and forced prostitution.

In most of the western world organized crime usually stays away from regular citizens. That's why many people here say if you don't approach them they will leave you be. But crime always affects regular people. And there is basically nothing you can do. It's just up to luck whether you specifically get affected or not.

When the Hell's Angels started to move into Europe most politicians just ignored it. But a war between locals clubs, the Hell's Angles and then the Banditos (who also moved into Europe) broke out almost immediately. Some people even got killed. But politicians only stepped in when a civilian got killed or severely injured because some gang member shot a rocket into a rivaling gang's bar. Then shit moved back into the shadows.

Yeah. I guess this post is now about bad movie adaptations in general.

You are 100% right about the Eragon movie. I loved those books as a kid and I was so excited for that movie and it was just so bafflingly terrible. It was like they didn’t even try.

When I went to community college, I’d arrive early to one theater class, and sitting there already (from a previous class, I believe) were two girls/women who somehow managed to fill 75% of their conversation, every time, with “Eragon was such a bad movie adaptation.”

Which taught me that the movie was so bad they it genuinely hurt fans of the novel.

The first tome of Dragon is 600 pages, it’s hardly a novel.

The Eragon movie is like the last season of Game of Thrones, but with none of the context of earlier seasons.

I was going to read Eragon with my kids, but then remembered how bad the movie was - and knew that they’d want to watch it after reading the books. So I haven’t read it with them. Might get around to it eventually.

That was my first movie as a kid where I thought “wow, the adults really fucked up the retelling of the book, if this is what this is supposed to be”
