Huh, crazy. A remaster would be neat, I really enjoyed FF9.

Who would win: every human in the world vs. every animal in the world?

I’m thinking the animals would easily defeat us, since trying to get all 8 billion+ humans to agree on a plan of attack would be a near-impossible task. By the time we’d be done trying to coordinate a plan, I figure the lions and cheetahs would have already devoured us, not to mention the larger animals like the elephants....

weariedfae ,

If you include insects and arthropods and everything suddenly turns into uberbloodlust-kill-all-humans then non-human animals win, hands down. I think people overestimate their ability, the effectiveness of weapons, and the sheer number of insects that are near you at all times. Insect biomass alone outstrips humans by an insane margin. Very few mammals or other animals would get a lick in, I think. There is no hermetically sealed bunker that would hold for long, and that won’t save you from the mites already on your skin although they probably can’t do a ton of a damage.

This is just like Maximum Overdrive!

Summer is the worst season of the year, isn't?

The sun sucks, being forced to shower like every 4 hours just to not feeling sweaty, the fucking mosquitoes, the fact you can’t wear anything that you want anymore due the heat, the people outside… The fucking beach. I try to avoid it… The fucking sand, not a fan of it. Is scratchy, harsh, annoying and it infiltrates in...

weariedfae ,

Am summer fae. Hard disagree. The worst part of summer is indoors where they abuse air conditioning to create a dry frigid wasteland.

And wildfire smoke which didn’t use to be a thing where I live.

My two nearest local papers are run by one company (I think) and their tech people are savvy as fuck. None of these paywall bypass sites work more than once, EVER. Archive doesn’t even work.

    weariedfae ,

Huh. I thought the video was going to be The Geologists are Coming before I read the rest of your comment.

    weariedfae ,

Crazy, I’m a geologist and that has not been my experience at all. Nerds as far as the eye can see in both undergrad and grad school.

    weariedfae ,

I know someone who has “guides” like thisb but a different “species”. It seems to be semi-common in some people with very low self esteem who have a deep desire to feel special. Not necessarily schizophrenia (but I am not a psych professional). It’s really sad.

    weariedfae ,

I wanted to make a joke but it kept coming off as mean at OP so I’ll just say that I think we as a society are mostly over finding stage names of musicians funny/outrageous.

    weariedfae ,

I have no idea how to even talk to you. I speak mostly in reference and meme! Shaka, when the walls fell.

    Temba at rest

Hers is the mind of a child.

Can someone explain to a layman what that less dense (appears darker) area is about? Just a random section of fewer stars or something else?

    weariedfae ,

    Neat, thanks

Good ol’ grannies (granodiorite). They’re important and diagnostic 'round these parts. Migrated down from Canadia we reckon.

    weariedfae ,

One thing I would do is use my water bending powers to open a house painting business (interior/exterior and cabinets). I would promise completely perfect results in 1 day or less with the caveat that the customer cannot be home for ‘safety’ reasons. Oh! I could partner with an air bender and we could have places completely painted, not a drop spilled, and completely dry in 1 hour or less. Without even over charging people we could do so much volume we’d make bank!

I may or may not be painting right now and hating reality.

    weariedfae ,

Hm. I think we’d just have to specify our special and unique process only works with water-based paints and primers. Could get away with the hybrid paints though and I think there’s good enough hybrid primers to make it work.

    MASHED potatoes…

DAE catch the live marathon on YouTube for the anniversary? Fuck I forgot how absurd these shows were.

Massive issues with sleep and desperate for a solution.

I’ve been struggling with sleep issues for over a decade now. My Doctor has prescribed me all sorts of medication, all of which has had many adverse side effects. What I do know that works, is Xanax. My wife was prescribed it for some stress issues and occasionally will give me one so I can finally sleep. Obviously asking my...

    weariedfae ,

What, specifically, have they tried? Did you try trazodone? I don’t think Xanax is the solution you think it may be even though it worked for you.

Is the issue falling asleep or staying asleep? Do you have an idea of what prevents you from falling asleep? What do you think about when you’re in bed falling asleep? What is your natural sleep cycle timeline? In other words, when do you naturally get sleepy and if given no restrictions, when would you wake up? How is your sleep hygiene (really, not just what you tell people)?

Do not, I repeat, do not go in there asking for Xanax or you will be labeled a drug seeker permanently. A doctor is not going to give you Xanax for this, full stop. They’re going to ask all of the above questions and try other avenues first. If they suspect an anxiety disorder they will move up that avenue and you may need a benzo but you have to be under care for a while and basically prove you’re trustworthy.

I have massive sleep problems too but you don’t have enough information in your post to give any other advice other than the standard sleep hygiene stuff you’ve already been told.

    weariedfae ,

I don’t discount your experience but I want to point out that benzos can be a very useful tool for people, especially with panic disorder, and they’re not inherently a trash drug.

While some people may develop a problem, others are able to use them on an as-needed basis long term. I’m sorry you struggled but glad you were able to overcome it. It’s absolutely understandable why you would feel negatively towards benzos as a whole.

    weariedfae ,

Caveat: doctors will only let you have a sleep study if they suspect sleep apnea. Other sleep studies that capture off-the-wall sleep disorders don’t seem accessible, at least in my local health system which is a Catholic-run local monopoly. Perhaps HCA, or Kaiser, or others may have a different philosophy.

    weariedfae ,

Funny, they seemed to be released all at once. Was there some sort of coordination on TikTok?

    weariedfae ,

Yeah but injuring the dude’s heart is way too far.

The appropriately-scaled reaction is to stab a pen into their arm. Or maybe a fork to the thigh if it’s accessible and it happens when you’re eating.

    (J/k but like, barely)

    weariedfae ,

    Absolutely, well put.

    weariedfae ,

    (echoing) Master’s ooooouuuut- ooouuut- oouutt

    weariedfae ,

Thank god. I cannot verify the quality of that trash based on my mental state by the time it was over. I hope no one ever reads mine.

Or at least someday I hope to overcome the PTSD and be able to read it again. In an ideal world I’d like to release an updated version/errata.

Guys, I put GW and SW instead of GP and SP and it makes me die inside.

    weariedfae ,

    Ditto.

    weariedfae ,

I don’t give a fuck about Blossom, if I met a dude in a bar who says he has a PhD in neuroscience and 2 published papers it would not think twice about calling him a scientist, even if he currently works flipping burgers with no plans to return.

    weariedfae ,

Dude you know why, right? They used to spray DDT everywhere. Like drop it from planes and fog and entire town (still do outside the US). Silent Spring came out in like the early 60s and they didn’t ban DDT until the early 70s. It took a hot minute for DDT usage to ramp down and insect/bird populations to ramp up.

Hence “”“sudden”“” need 20 years later.

    weariedfae ,

You were still on in 03? I figured everyone migrated by then, or at least were using Trillian.

    Also, 5 digits? l337

    weariedfae ,

Their decline has been so sad. I moved somewhere with fireflies in 2007. The first year they were everywhere. The second year less so and they were completely gone by 2010. I always tried to leave longer grassy areas for them but they were just… gone. It was so so so sad. I didn’t grow up with them and that first summer was enchanted and magical.

I have great memories of walking down the road on a hot night with thousands of slowly blinking balls of light. The person who lives in that place now probably doesn’t even know that fireflies are supposed to be in the area.

    weariedfae ,

Fucking prions, man. Scarier than most diseases. Remember kids: in a survival situation it’s okay to eat most of a Long Pig or a cow but don’t eat the brain. You just never know.

My friend's boyfriend's therapist said that he is an abuser who is trying to look like the victim. What does this mean?

My friend has been talking with this 24 year old man online since early 2022. She is into stereotypical nerds that are on the chubbier sides. He is a stereotypical nerd both inside and out, and is 350 lbs at 5"11. She thinks he’s the cutest man she’s ever seen. She met him on Reddit, he lives in California while she lives in...

    weariedfae ,

Oh god it’s the ghost of online relationship past. Apparently kids are the same 20+ years later.

In my experience, yes those are red flags, and this is NOT a good situation. You mentioned his age but not hers but I’d bet dollars to doughnuts she’s younger than him.

Listen, I know from personal experience this relationship is a bad Idea and Aunt Weariedfae says get out and do not feel bad about it. She’ll realize later how manipulative it was. That the power balance was way out of whack. What controlling behavior is. I think he did your friend a kindness by straight up admitting he wouldn’t visit instead of scheduling trips and canceling last minute over and over.

I’m sorry your friend is in this situation. I also don’t think your friend may listen to advice about decoupling. But maybe she’s smarter than myself and my friend who also went through the same thing around the same time. Hopefully she is.

    weariedfae ,

This hits too close to home.

It’s like…you spend like a solid couple of days grabbing EVERYTHING tangentially related. But you just end up reading the one old paper on your thing, the biggest semi-recent papers of sub-subjects 1 and maybe 2, and then whatever was last published about your thing.

It’s not good practice but like… there are so many relevant-enough-to-cite papers.

    weariedfae ,

Ooh I think I could find my way back to one in the Midwest.

The great lakes have some crazy stuff, man.

    weariedfae ,

I don’t like your relative. Providing comfortable care of elderly and end of life pets is to be expected when you adopt an animal, even if it is difficult.

    weariedfae ,

Am geologist. No one I’ve ever worked with or been in a class with has cared. I didn’t think I’ve ever heard anyone even snicker. Although we’re in USA which spells it dike.

I have seen a Gen X straight white man have to correct someone’s spelling and then stammer over explaining that spelling it ‘dyke’ has another meaning here but is the way it is spelled in Europe.

    weariedfae ,

Apparently the term is reserved for sponges that aren’t filter feeders but are kinda sticky like velcro and catch stuff that way.
