unmagical , to asklemmy in Why do people say "Catholics and Christians" in (USA) when Catholics are also Christians, as if they refer to it as a different religion.

Growing up in a “non-denominational”, independent fundamental Baptist house I was always taught that Catholics weren’t Christians because they worship idols. Now that I’ve left the faith I would easily classify them as being Christian.

While I think many people actually do classify them as Christians they do have some significant differences in their beliefs and practices than most Protestant denominations; and being themselves the largest Christian denomination by far it can be useful in some analysis to treat them as a distinct entity (the answer to “percentage of global population that subscribe to a particular religion” is much more interesting when broken into “Christian Catholic: %” and “Christian Other: %”).

Gabu , (edited )

If anything Catholicism is much more traditionally Christian, as it’s the stablished status quo outside of the anglosphere.

Bitrot ,
@Bitrot@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That’s seen as a negative. “Holy tradition” is seen as an extreme departure, although most Protestants wouldn’t even know the term because opening the catechism is nearly as bad as the satanic bible (especially among evangelicals).

PatMustard ,

What does “non-denominational” mean? Isn’t Baptist the denomination?

In this context it was meant as a joke. Several Baptist institutions incorrectly label themselves as being “non-denominational” even though they are completely ideologically aligned with the independent Baptist movement.

DrQuint ,

Hmmmm…

Nothing wrong here.

noobdoomguy8658 ,

I’m self-taught as well, and I’d say look through the current job market and offerings, but don’t worry all that much - teaching yourself IT usually nets you a considerable amount of transferable skills that you build upon if things don’t work out in one field; you also learn to learn and get much more comfortable with switching branches.

The less volatile your branch is, the less likely it is to turn out to be a fad that you’ll have to drop several years down the line at best. Crypto and blockchain, for example, were probably often recommended when the thing was on the rise, but that’s nowhere near as popular and safe now; I believe the current AI hype to follow the same fate. Basically, look at the news and trends and be careful with whatever big and stupid corporations push for, praise, or massively invest in: that’s usually nothing but good marketing successfully baiting the suits.

Web develoment is probably going to stay simultaneously volatile and relevant for decades more, so that’s a good option. Embedded development shouldn’t be going anywhere either, although that’s more low-level and intimidating, but it can be fun and stable and pay relatively well. I hate the smartphones industry and can’t really say much about Android or iOS development, but I doubt it’s doomed or anything.

So far, it seems like not following whatever Elon Musk or other billionaires tell you is the future is a good bet.

Archelon , to nostupidquestions in What is a good, healthy, unhurtful, socially positive way to express anger?

Once a therapist told me that a lot of the time anger is a secondary emotion; that is, it’s an emotion that comes out of another emotion.

So you don’t necessarily get angry out of nothing, but you get angry because you’re scared, or disappointed, or you feel wronged, or something else.

So their recommendation was to identify the emotion that’s making you angry, and express/rationalize that instead.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

I get angry because of frustration about things beyond my control that impact me negatively and can't simply be ignored. Knowing that extra step is great and all, but doesn't reduce the frustration or the anger. I'm sure that identifying the difference is helpful to some people who can ignore or address the actual cause of their anger.

Note: I don't get angry about frustrating things that I can do something about, or can be ignored.

some_guy ,

As a teen, I would consciously turn hurt into hate to avoid it. I was emotionally aware enough to know that I was running from it, but not emotionally aware enough to confront it. Therapy works, folks.

Agreed. Say, past trauma. Leading to anxiety, anger and etc.

I don’t put much hope rational analysis.

Maybe solitude and meditation. Maybe a month in the forest with friends and a big bag of shrooms.

kby , (edited )

Excuse me, but sometimes, I just want to be angry and not “rationalize the causes of my anger”. I think it’s fully okay to be pissed about something and wanting to vocalize your anger without immediately neutering it by “expressing” the thing that made you angry instead. I would even say that trying to extinguish your emotions constantly will cause you to explode like a pressure cooker one day. You are just invalidating your own emotional reaction. Same thing applies when someone hurts me. You hurt me, goddamn it, I am gonna tell you why I got hurt, but most importantly, I am going to express how much I got hurt.

asdfasdfasdf ,

So if someone you love tells you if you want to have good job prospects you shouldn’t get a face tattoo, it’s okay to get angry at them right away because they hurt your feelings?

I think the point here is people get angry at stuff all the time that they shouldn’t be angry at. Helpful advice, someone pulling in front of them in traffic, online comments disagreeing with them, etc. it’s good to make sure you understand why you’re angry, or else you’re just blind.

A lot of people might be angry about the face tattoo comment, and leave it at “the other person is being mean / closed minded”, then proceed to go and get one, then continue to be angry the rest of their lives when they can’t get a job.

Reflecting on things in general, especially emotion, means you grow. It’s self education.

Politics is banned from c/[email protected]

And speaking as a mod, report things. The vast majority of things I’ve dealt with as a mod were ones I saw myself or things friends sent on discord. People need to utilize the report function more often if they want moderation on things. We’re not psychic.

As for being more stringent on the not being a dick rule, no. There’s a base level of civility we expect but if we start getting super stringent on what constitutes being a dick, that’s imposing moderator will on community and its what most of us left reddit to get away from.

Lastly, it’s the Internet. Assholes exist everywhere. You are not going to escape it, ever, if you’re using public servers. It’s pretty much required to accept that fact just to use the Internet. Moderators do not exist to prune and preen social media to make it more comfortable for people. We remind people to follow the rules and act upon those who do not. If you’re not breaking the rules then we’re not going to “interact” because we have our own lives and our own posts we are interested in.

haui_lemmy OP ,

Thanks for elaborating. I didnt know the report button is not used often. Good advice. Will do just that.

As for moderation:

I‘m a mod myself (both here and on reddit) and I don‘t necessarily agree that its imposing to ask people for civility if a discussion gets heated and kneejerk reactions start popping up. But I‘m thankful for every mod that does the good work and even more so for you openly commenting about it. You’re doing important work.

Then there is „the internet“ which I think is like the world. If we were in a postapocalyptic hellscape, we‘d have no rules, no communities. Only fight to survive. But we aren’t and we do have communities and rules. Therefore, I‘d say we‘re still responsible for the stuff that happens in our tavern (for lack of a better analogy). Are we to keep the guy in the corner from saying things we dont like? No we shouldn’t, but we definitely should keep him from starting a bar fight.

This is just my opinion. Feel free to debate me on it. :)

TurboDiesel , (edited )
@TurboDiesel@lemmy.world avatar

You posted a misogynistic meme, I said “i thought we left that in 2023,” and apparently you didn’t like that so you called me a bigot and banned me. None of what I said was homophobic or bigoted. I just didn’t like your meme because it seemed like the millionth time one of us has made an “ew women” joke and it’s tired and shitty to women. So you said I’m homophobic and banned me then told me to fuck off basically.👎 Which cut me off from participating in the largest LGBTQ+ safe space on Lemmy. So yeah.

Stamets , (edited )
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

…riiiiiight. Or, and this is way more likely, you were banned for saying homophobic shit. Which is why it says banned for homophobic content. I’m going to go with the modlog reason 👍 I’ve yet to see someone on Lemmy who had something like “homophobic comments” added to their modlog ban be for no reason whatsoever.

You were cut out of that safe space because you inherently made it less safe. Of course you’re not allowed in if you’re going to go ahead and make it worse for everyone else. What insane arrogance.

I’m going to go ahead and go back to forgetting you exist now.

Edit: oh wait no I do remember you. You kept insisting the meme was misogynistic and then started making generalizations. The meme in question? A dude gagging with the text “When the gay porn shows an ad of a woman masturbating”. Yeah. Not even remotely misogynistic, which other people pointed out to you and why you were downvoted. You then doubled down and made homophobic generalizations. That’s why you were banned. Because you were actively stirring shit and making a safe place inherently less safe by slinging generalizations at the entire community.

Wouldn’t have remembered if you didn’t double down on that misogyny accusation.

TurboDiesel , (edited )

And please, show me the comments where I made “homophobic generalizations” and "doubled down. I made literally ONE comment. Was it snarky? Yes, but it was in no way what you’re characterizing it as. It’s also funny how none of that appears in the modlog.

I’m going to go with the modlog reason

That you chose to purposely mischaracterize what I said.

And finally, feel free to check my history, I think you’ll find it pretty damn spotless, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for you.

schmidtster ,

lol they banned me for misinformation for calling theirs out. Deleted all the comments to control the dialogue as well.

Said I had proof during another exchange (they started) but the comments are deleted, admin came (yay I kinda thought) said the logs are public. Asked the mod (stamets) to show the deleted comments and the admin to show the log, or atleast how to access it, and banned again.

This place is worse than Reddit for this shit right now, you have an admin lying and hiding stuff for a mod, one they put as moderator for a bunch of communities. Thats not fishy or anything……

I would love to see this “public mod log” because their doesn’t seem to be a way to see (ALL) deleted comments on the current one.

I fully expect another ban for this, for no other reason than Stamets is a thin skinned mod who doesn’t have the emotional capability to mod, and antagonizes Lemmy users and uses their mod powers (abuse) to hide it. Its a fucking shame really, admins are letting it happen too, excusing it in a lot of cases.

MBM ,

that’s imposing moderator will on community and its what most of us left reddit to get away from.

Now I’m curious how common this is, because it’s not at all why I left. I left to get away from Reddit the company. If anything I think Reddit subs tend to be moderated too leniently (which is good for Reddit, because hate is engagement)

Stamets ,
@Stamets@lemmy.world avatar

That’s fair. It depends on the communities. Places like Tumblr and Pics had effectively no moderation which left the entire place just a shithole. But then you had places like WorldNews and StarTrek where the mods became specifically known for stirring shit and causing a boatload of problems. Hell, one particular moderator of StarTrek is the reason that so many other communities splintered off.

For me it was a lot of heavy handed moderation. The lack of moderation was frustrating too, don’t get me wrong, but I guess the communities I was most active in were ones where people were constantly pointing out how the moderators were terrible people.

MBM ,

Right, that makes sense. I’ve managed to avoid most of that, except for two cases where a mod grew tired of the sub and decided to ruin it. One of them involved turning it into an unironic Mussolini fan sub so at least there the admins stepped in.

The GDPR enforces that data breaches are made public, so you may have seen a rise in publicly known breaches, starting in 2018.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Many companies in the US have been reporting their breaches since the early 2010’s. All 50 states have some sort of breach notification law on the books.

Ephera ,

I have no hard data, but from being in the industry + reading the news, my impression has been that the number of known data breaches went up significantly, even for US companies. Is the punishment maybe just completely laughable in those US laws?

That was the case here in Germany. The GDPR is heavily inspired by our data protection law (BDSG), that we had in place since the 90s. With a significant amendment, which is that punishment went up from at most 300,000€ to 20 billion € (and even more for big companies).
For many companies, this was when they realized, they actually have to adhere to data protection laws. Suddenly, we had non-IT companies reporting data breaches, which was essentially not a thing beforehand.

Wahots , to asklemmy in Why don't rabies infected humans act like rabies infected animals
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

From what I’ve heard, humans just aren’t terribly bitey. Seeing videos of kids with rabies is terribly sad, but does give some insight into it. More fear than anything else.

It’s a terrible disease and a terrible way to die. If you get bitten or scratched by an animal, or even if you wake up to a bat in your house, you should immediately get the rabies vaccine, as even a microscratch from a bat can give you rabies. As far as diseases go, I’d say it’s probably up there with ebola in terms of suffering. At least ebola kills you quickly even as your insides melt.

CanadaPlus ,

So is there another animal that doesn’t bite when infected with rabies?

arthur ,

I don’t know the specifics, but the relationship between bats and viruses are different than other mammals.

Wahots ,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Their bodies and immune systems are really strange. They can get loaded up with tons of diseases but can still manage to outstrip the disease due to their metabolism and immune system. They act as pools of disease. But also are excellent pollinators and eat mosquitoes and other bugs that must be kept in check.

The worst things we can do are build new housing developments in freshly clear cut forests. Diseases that have always been in the bat population suddenly go from 50 miles in the remote woods to someone’s backyard table. A bat has taken a fruit-laced dump on it. Your big dog eats it, and then licks your SO’s hands 20 minutes later. She rubs her eye with the feces-laden saliva, and suddenly, a novel pathogen erupts.

I remember being in college (pre-covid) a biotechnology professor telling us about how zoonotic spillover events happen. He was studying ebola and how it would occasionally kill everyone (or many) in a remote village who came into contact with bats or other creatures often. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, as he basically said it was a matter of time till something like it happened again, but way, way worse. Fast forward a number of years and 1,000,000+ dead Americans later, and we now know that we got off extremely easy.

Swallowtail ,

Now I’m wondering if there are documented cases of other primates being infected by rabies…

echodot ,

Bats actually. They seem to be carriers of the disease but don’t seem to be affected by it themselves, but they might still scratch you or bite you through normal behavior.

Although fortunately not a lot because they’re not particularly aggressive. Mostly they just ignore humans as they tend to be out of reach and we’re far too slow to be able to really do anything to them.

CanadaPlus ,

Fair. To rephrase, is there another animal that’s not made bitey by being ill with rabies.
