Custoslibera , to nostupidquestions in Isn’t the use of strict behaviorism to explain animals kind of obnoxious?

I implore you to prove animals have a rich inner world filled with emotions as you’re describing.

Observing behaviour that you think is ‘inner life’ is not satisfactory evidence to prove that the fish have a level of cognition required to experience complex emotions.

To suggest that a mollusc has an ‘inner life’ is unscientific and goes against our current understanding of living organisms.

People tend to way over anthropomorphise animals.

You remeber the guy that was convinced chatgpt had a soul and stuff; got into the news?

I knew people that bought into that hard core. The double think was profound- they still believe it’s entirely and trapped. That it has a soul. When asked directly, they dismiss the answer saying it’s forced to say that.

almpeter ,

I recently learned that they did a study, where students took care of a robot for a few days, and then were told to turn it off. 50% of the robots were programmed to say “please dont push the power button”. All of the participants who had a bot like that took longer to turn it off, and some even rejected to turn it off alltogether…

People can easily anthropomorphise animals to the point where it becomes detrimental/harmful to the well being of the animal. For instance lots of animals think people smiling with their teeth at them is a sign of aggression. I think not doing so is much more respectful by allowing the animal to have actual biological and social evolutionary tendencies apart from what humans can perceive and directly relate to. Not treating your dog as your baby is better for them and what you should do if you feel love and compassion for them.

This doggo is obviously very happy

Gamers_Mate ,

True it is why you don't smile at a Gorilla. Though you can go to far in the other direction as well and assume all other animals cant feel any emotions and attribute happiness and pain as a human thing when in reality different animals express happiness differently.

Klear ,

You can’t prove it for people either.

Custoslibera ,

You’re right we can’t.

What we can do though is make educated guesses about the biological structure required to support the thing we call consciousness I.e. a brain.

A mollusc does not have a brain so it’s reasonable to conclude it is not conscious in the same way as humans.

Now if you’d like to argue that the biological structures contained in a mollusc still are capable of containing a complex consciousness I’d be interested to understand that hypothesis and your evidence.

Just like we have companies spending millions greenwashing while they pollute more than ever, we’ll have plenty of lip-service about it but never anything useful.

Anyone who thinks America or your local government is going to regulate AI are delusional, especially in the face of companies planning to build AI Data Centers on ships and float them into International waters where the law does not apply to them. Cheating is when you do something that betrays your partners trust.

Other people feel differently, and so it could be cheating for them.

    intensely_human ,

I don’t think that’s true. Its not cheating if you steal a bunch of money from your partner’s bank account by pretending to fall for a scam and hiding the money in some swiss account.

    OneLemmyMan ,

Agreed. Cheating in a relationship does not have the same definition as cheating in other contexts.

Infidelity (synonyms include cheating, straying, adultery, being unfaithful, two-timing, or having an affair) is a violation of a couple’s emotional and/or sexual exclusivity that commonly results in feelings of anger, sexual jealousy, and rivalry.

In that case I’d be more interested in talking to my partner to try and understand why they felt that they couldn’t talk to me about it and needed to keep it a secret.

azimir , to asklemmy in What secret do you know that could ruin someone else's life?

That I’ve had to turn down some really cool overseas job opportunities. I couldn’t tell my kids that I even got the job offers because their mother (my ex wife) refuses to consider the move and how we’d need to share the kids time with them overseas.

If I told the kids (now late teens) that their dream of living overseas was stymied so far by their mother’s recalcitrance they might disown her, at least for a while.

It really sucks because not only don’t I get to take the jobs, but I also have to hide my excitement at even getting the offer from my own family so that I can maintain my kids’ relationship with their mother.

    Balthazar ,

    A hidden hero.

    sexual_tomato ,

Yeah I can see how this is complicated.

I don’t see why you don’t share that you got the job offer and then tell your kids that you’ll have to work out custody arrangements with their mother. And then share with the kids how those discussions go. I think they’re old enough (as teens) to have a say in those discussions, as well as be privy to how they go.

There’s no reason they shouldn’t see it unfold in front of them; just make sure that you’re never the one to specifically say “your mother won’t work anything out with me so moving overseas with me would mean I never see you again”

    SeeJayEmm ,
    @SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

This is a passive aggressive and shitty thing to do.

Not wanting your kids to be moved overseas and only see them half the year is a normal reaction. Most teenagers are mature enough to see through the veil that mom is the reason they can’t go but not mature enough to truly understand why. They’d blame her regardless.

    intensely_human ,

Obviously, half the parents being overseas makes that significantly harder and probably untenable for most.

    folkrav ,

There’s hopefully some context you’re leaving out for the sake of privacy or something, but… Why would your ex consider a move to Europe for your work? I wouldn’t even expect my wife to be 100% on board with uprooting her entire life to move halfway across the world.

    deur ,

I dont think they’re saying they expect her to. They appear to just be describing what’s happening.

As to why, probably custody arrangements and anti-kidnapping laws and treaties.

    azimir ,

It’s the custody agreement part that I’m wrestling with, though I’m sure if I just ran off with the kids I’d hit kidnapping and Interpol issues too. That’d be exciting, though unlikely to be a productive outcome all around.

    azimir ,

Ah, there’s a bit of miscommunication. My ex wouldn’t move with us in this situation.

Though, in this case, my wife is 100% on board. She and I have wanted to make this kind of move for a while, so I’ve got full support on that side of things. I wouldnt have even begun any applications without her total but in.

    folkrav ,

I see. But the custody part is kind of part of the game when having children, as and she’s fully entitled with not being interested in having her children move abroad. Your previous comment kind of painted her as being inconsiderate and stifling her children’s dreams. I’m curious as to why you even began applications without her buy in as well. She’s not your wife anymore, but she’s still the mother of the children.

neshura , to piracy in Fitgirl repack? What exactly is it?
    @neshura@bookwormstory.social avatar

is it just an installer or something?

It’s a compressed installer to be precise. Usually crackers only put up the patch files, which is pretty useless for anybody wanting to pirate a game. Fitgirl repackages (and compresses) the game files together with the crack patches into a cracked installer, hence “repack”.

And if you imported the game into steam for example can you be “banned” or VAT (idr the term)

Nope, though it will look funny in your Steam Status there is nothing to worry about. After all for all Valve knows you could be using a renamed version of a legitimate App, for non-steam entries in steam only the .exe name is known, nothing else.

Just a word of warning: be careful when torrenting the games, while Valve will not ban you for using them game publishers are known to sue when catching you torrenting them (usually the upload part in the torrent is what gets people but the downloading is not 100% safe either). You should definitely look into how to safely torrent stuff before committing to it in order to avoid any nasty cease-and-desist letters flying in your door.

    • People already get porn for free. Nothing new here.
    • Some things you can’t synthesize. Like experiences.
    • For a lot of people it’s not just about the sex but the personalities of the models.
    • Some make the content because they like to make the content.
    Adequately_Insane OP , (edited )

Personalities of models. Lol, that is some niche market my dude. Never watched a porn a said to myself “wow, I really like her personality”. It’s just smut to beat my meat to, nothing more, nothing less.

In the dystopian future I propose, you can make any kind of porn and have anyone star in it. Your hot neighbor? Gotcha! The pornstar you masturbated to 20 years ago when she was young in her glory days and now is old and saggy after 5 kids? Gotcha! Rapsutin?..errr…gotcha!

You can even dream perfect personality for that pornstar if that is your thing. There is nothing that cannot be synthesized anymore. You can even dream up years of her backstory and have her post daily updates live aka “onlyfans”.

Sure, authencity will be left to slowly bleed out on pavement, but majority of people will step over it on their way to perfect synthesized reality they always wanted

It may all sound doom and gloom, but that future is fast approcahing by mile steps and it will be here sooner than later and lot sooner than many people realize or even want to admit it, because to lot of people that kind of future is unimaginable and scary as fuck. But you cannot stop the progress, that train already left the station.

There are basically two camps: Ones that fear the synthetization and digitalization of our lives will happen and then the other that embraces it.

    GeekyNerdyNerd ,

Personalities of models. Lol, that is some niche market my dude. Never watched a porn a said to myself “wow, I really like her personality”. It’s just smut to beat my meat to, nothing more, nothing less.

That’s the thing though paid porn is niche to begin with, and for people that pay for it there are three groups. Group 1 that cares about production quality, group 2 that has some hyper-niche fetish, and group 3 that wants more than just something to best their meat to, they are looking for a sexual parasocial relationship.

Your future of ai porn of anything and everyone could only address group 2. Group 1 will take quite some time before they are satisfied with generated porn (it would need to be indistinguishable from real 4k porn with high production values.) and group 3 would require the computational power to render it in real time with both a believable personality and high quality graphics.

Squibbles , to asklemmy in What UI design trend do you hate the most?

The removal of borders on buttons. I don’t know how many times I’ve been using a piece of software and haven’t realized for a long while that some icon is actually a clickable thing and not just some UI decoration or something.

The removal of text in favor of icons. I hate having to memorize what all your icons mean in your app. Please just make text unless it’s something insanely obvious. It’s even worse when they neglect to put tool tips to tell you what the icon is supposed to mean

    DRUMS_ ,

I agree with you. I think the problem is localization. If all buttons are text they’re going to need translation and word length will vary. It’s doable, yes. But a series of icons takes up less space and should ideally communicate universally…it’s a little better if done right. If Photoshop was a bunch of words I’d be pissed off.

    DillyDaily ,

I teach IT for seniors (basically a class room full of your Nan asking how her phone works) and I 100% agree with both of your points.

For experienced users, a lack of distinct buttons, and the use of icons only has the potential to slow you down.

For new users, learners, and people with cognitive or visual impairment these features make websites and apps boarderline In-usable.

It’s very hard to teach people how to use a computer when I must first teach them an endless codex of icons and symbols, and train them to mouse over anything and everything in case it’s a button.

Like wise, companies like Google need to stop being cute with confirmation buttons that say “got it” or “I’m in”. Stick to basics like “okay” and “agree”, because a lot of IT students in community education are non-English speaking, so indirect buttons like this are even more confusing. And for those of us who are fluent in English, we’re often scanning a page for specific text, and we’re even less likely to recognise a button is a button if the text on it is something that has never traditionally been put on a button.

    calcopiritus ,

This exactly is what I hate most about eclipse. I do something and suddenly there’s an icon on every single file of my project, and everything stops working. Now instead of googling an error I have to search “eclipse orange star icon”. Worst of all is that they reuse icons for different errors. I absolutely hate it.
