The important part here is that if someone is willing they can add these features to foss software. Either by learning/doing the work or by helping fund someone to do it for them.

Libre office (no idea about open office, sadly) works in the same way excel does. A lot of the „advanced“ features of excel can also be achieved in other ways or by other software. Of course I‘m willing to get schooled by someone who has advanced knowledge of both and says its insanely different. But from my perspective the differences are marginal.

haui_lemmy ,

What most people forget: you can spend small amounts to actually improve foss software if you need it to „just work“. There are hundreds if not thousands of hobby devs that will help you for a tip! :) if he spent thousands of dollars on plugins, I bet he could sponsor a small dev so that he and others can become independent of windows. Which by the way might deprecate his software anyway at some time.

haui_lemmy ,

Obviously not. I said if a feature is so advanced that libreoffice doesnt have it yet, they can either help building it (by code or by reporting the missing feature or helping advance the discussion) or they can use additional software if such exists or they can pay someone to do it.

haui_lemmy ,

Just for clarity: how would it do a disservice to players if a dev can sell their steam keys for any price, no matter which platform?

haui_lemmy ,

Let me try and understand this by altering the product.

Valve now produces cars and the devs are people who make these cars inside factories. Same as is currently the case, these employees get cars cheaper and are asked to not undercut the seller by holding onto the cars for a certain amount of time before selling them used.

It does make sense for me to view it that way. One could argue that the couple cars that get sold by employees doesnt do anything to hurt the brand and that pressuring them to keep the price high manipulates the market.

Also, doesnt the work of steam accumulate to hosting mirrors of a game and hosting a large website they get billions in revenue for?

haui_lemmy ,

First of all, people sometimes use analogies that dont make sense to you. No need to be a dick about it. You could just make a better example.

Staying with cars, I see my mistake. Valve is not producing the cars in this example, valve is doing the car sales for the (small) manufacturer. They dont provide any part of the car, only the exposure and surrounding community. Its not nothing but has zero to do with the product.

What they are asking is „you can sell cars from our showroom, just dont sell them for cheaper than we do“. Which does make sense.

haui_lemmy ,

If anything on lemmy has ever been „nottheonion“ material, it is this.

haui_lemmy ,

This needs to become illegal and bear a bankruptcy inducing fine if repeatedly done.

We need to get rid of these monopolists

haui_lemmy ,

I agree with your second sentence. Thats what we need to change.

haui_lemmy ,

Playing steam games on the TV has become really good. I played through most of control over steamlink and besides my ps4 controler losing power too often - which has nothing to do with steam, it has been a blast.

Games that can be played with controller work great on the tv.

haui_lemmy ,

The issue is much bigger than this and much bigger than valve.

The underlying problem are nation state sized companies that are so vertically integrated that they profit from every step of the process they are involved in.

Through their huge size they have the power to profit on procurement, labor, production, sales, etc. compared to smaller companies. The concept of billion dollar companies (and individuals) is perverse.

The capitalist system was not designed to harbour companies that never make a loss and are sold or broken up just because they dont satisfy last quarter‘s predictions.

Everywhere where joe or jane average cant start a competing business (either through overzealous regulations like tiny banks or through monopoly inducing IP laws like the one allowing valve to infinitely hold games hostage) you will have overcharging, barely any progress in development and small numbers of people ridicolously raking in profits.

We need to get rid of the right to „sell“ limited licenses, billion dollar companies and shareholder primacy.

haui_lemmy ,

I‘d say I‘m honest and loyal, not particularly nice. To me nice means diplomatic, charismatic and with low temper.

haui_lemmy ,

It really depends on your perspective if windows is „easier“ to produce for. They are fully and redundantly vertically integrated which means they have the means to produce IDEs and even create programming languages.

But it is hugely easier to create a small app on linux imo. The simplicity of linux and the modularity of the different desktop environments is pretty great.

Is it tech illiterate friendly like windows? No! It would be great if everyone would be able to use linux now but we‘re gonna have to be patient.

haui_lemmy ,

In this particular case I meant that linux is the same in all regards: open source. You can look everything up if you have the time. This makes it possible to change everything and anything you need. Even through different DEs you still have the same structure.

Now if you go try that with windows, you‘re properly hosed. Different package manager? No! Different desktop environment? No!

Simple might not have been the best choice of words though. Modularity might be better.

haui_lemmy ,

I agree. Same as public libraries, someone pays for it, either through work or through money. So people should always donate to their instance if they are able to. Otherwise they are actively promoting the opposite: closed source, for profit, walled gardens.

haui_lemmy ,

Awesome comment! Thanks for sharing.

My washing machine only has „scolding hot“ and „heartless cold“. Does it need help? /jk

haui_lemmy ,

Hahaha

haui_lemmy ,

…we haven‘t been sued by our customers for bad code!

Yes thats due to testing.

Can you prove that?

haui_lemmy ,

Install steam and whatever gaming things you have and give it a proper spin. I also added some gnome extensions for system usage. Besides that, pop is very simple.

haui_lemmy ,

To be fair I did have a decent run in with some mods on .ml as well and I am not a fan of their practices.

I do however think the public shaming and calling for boycott is so wrong its not even funny. We‘re still talking about the people who made this here possible. Especially the derogatory use of the word „tankie“ is unacceptable imo.

I‘d prefer if people started debates and tried to find common ground instead. For the reason of decentralization I would like less popular „versions“ of the communities to thrive.

haui_lemmy ,

Please dont use lemmy.world alternatives. World is a much bigger problem in terms of centralization.

haui_lemmy ,

I didnt know about it. Thanks for mentioning. Subscribed.

haui_lemmy ,

If that’s not worthy of a derogatory term then what is?

Nothing is. Shaming and harassing others is not the solution. Instead we should let them advocate for whatever their ideal is. The same we let nazis have their own little „reich“ in their own homes. If they start breaking rules they get the same backlash as anyone else. Dont make it about „identity“.

Its dehumanizing and leads to hate and violence. Same as with psychopaths, narcissists, pedophiles, etc. These people are living creatures just as we are. Some of them are sick, some of them are dangerous. That does not mean they can be treated as lesser.

haui_lemmy ,

I agree with you on both accounts. Their preferred choices arent the same as pronouns and I think both authoritarian ideologies are similar and dangerous.

My point was solely that namecalling, derogatory words or slurs arent doing anything for anyone. They‘re just helping others hate us and us do unspeakable things to them and vice versa.

Dehumanizing is a precursor for genocide for a reason and that is why I think its a bad idea. Of course its just my opinion and I‘m perfectly fine if you disagree with it.

haui_lemmy ,

I agree that if that happened (which I dont have the time nor the nerve atm) its very scary.

Most likely, as always on the internet, the truth is they have certain beliefs which are problematic and triggering, and they are programmers, not weathered social workers who can solve heated conflicts.

And then comes the most important part: they have not engaged in these alleged practices all the time so it is likely that bad coincidences came together and brought on the perfect storm on them/us.

I stand by my initial statement. We can condemn the actions, we can harshly disagree on ideology but we should refrain from dehumanizing them.

Have a good one. :)

haui_lemmy ,

I can see your point. Sadly we have ample evidence that others have thought the same about such terms and they have a bad precedent.

So thanks for discussing this in good faith. I like the way we discussed this as it often isnt what happens with others.

Have a good one. :)

haui_lemmy ,

I will probably get the comments at some point. Its a matter of federation I guess. Thanks for the resource. Will check.

haui_lemmy ,

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I have made different experiences. You can debate them and they wont ban you if you act like an adult. What most mods (me included) wont accept is excessive drama, aggressive behavior, etc. obviously people make mistakes, some are outright dicks. But the generalization seems very far fetched.

haui_lemmy ,

That place is a shithole. I stand by it.

And thats your right. I dont object to that.

I‘m saying thats not a general rule for these or any mods/admins. I have personally had discussions with them and with some I‘m not on the best of terms. Yet I haven’t been banned anywhere from posting. Furthermore, i have seen a lot of posts and comments „just pointing out“ stuff and using derogatory words and populist language. I cant say I‘d watch that indefinitely myself.

Btw stating a rule as a ban reason does not seem suspicious to me. Feel free to disagree.

haui_lemmy ,

I‘m glad that the fediverse resists excessive moderation and silencing of unwanted political opinions. I‘m not a fan of some of the things said or done on .ml but we wont do anything which is awesome. You can make your own instance and defederate, ban, block whoever you like.

To make my point clear, I made a large donation to the lemmy devs as I think they are doing awesome work. @dessalines especially is a tremendous help for the open source community.

But of course you‘re entitled to your opinion. Have a good day.

haui_lemmy ,
  1. how will you prove they’re not „real people“?
  2. you‘re using a platform made by them
  3. the post itself is also propaganda since it pushes for a „solution“ against „tankies“.
haui_lemmy ,

I‘m not saying you cant be right. I still dont agree with your assumptions. Have a good day.

haui_lemmy ,

*by the standards set by our corporate overlords

The „laws“ that predatory, autocratic, overpowered nation states veiled as „companies“ push down our legal system are not the will of the people, nor are they based on „justice, fairness and equality“ as stated here so they are not laws.

haui_lemmy ,

I‘d refrain from posting it openly as it may be monitored by valve if credentials of accounts surface somewhere. A bit far fetched but I‘d just make the first person who answers a specific post or whatever.

haui_lemmy ,

Very funny

haui_lemmy ,

Whatever you problem is mate, its not anything I‘m interested in hearing. Good bye.

haui_lemmy ,

Because they’re the bad guys. Companies the size of nation states are an abomination that should never have existed in the first place.

haui_lemmy ,

Lemmy, although in a very well working state, isnt really deploy ready. The update procedure is a mess, the documentation is less than stellar and accessibility/onboarding for wannabe admins is rough to say the least.

You can find a compose file on github and you will need to make a config file for the instance with your domain and all on it.

A one click install sure is doable but most people who are able to do this quickly are very busy or wont do it for free.

haui_lemmy ,

Great! Glad it worked out for you. The second time I deployed lemmy on a production machine it was markedly easier because I have a known working compose and lemmy.hjson file so thats one part. I think the first install/config took me days of tinkering.

At the moment, I cant see if I‘ll havre the time to ever make a cone click install script but I‘ll think about it.

Good luck with your instance.

haui_lemmy OP ,

I know but thanks. the data on this is rather old so I thought if I can get the prices from the game directly I could write something that changes with the game if an update messes up the prices.

haui_lemmy ,

Everything is more complex as youtube because youtube has spent billions to make you get sucked in and make it easy to stay on the page.

Peertube is foss software and needs to be improved by a small number of paid devs and normal people like you and me.

You dont make a peertube account just like a youtube or google account. You can use mastodon for that and also subscribe to channels that way. It needs better documentation though. Feel free to ask if you need further assistance.

haui_lemmy ,

I really feel like I‘m visiting two dimensions on lemmy. I really like firefox and I use it daily with no complaints whatsoever. But the amount of people saying „it has only gotten worse recently“ seems to be the same crowd for the last 3 years. Its always on its way down, it gets all his revenue from google bla bla bla. I know thats an issue, using chrome is not the answer.

Often we say infinite growth (capitalism) is not sustainable and reasonable. Can we also say infinite progressivism is also not sustainable and reasonable?

This question is social/political, and meant to trigger a nice debate on the negatives of imbalanced infinite progressivism we seem to be heading in social and technological spheres, ignoring science, practicality and reason....

haui_lemmy ,

Yeah, no. Your tone and comment history already tells me enough. Have fun on my block list. Good bye.
