My gta5 high speed driving through traffic saved me from having a head on collision, there’s a spot on the highway where 2 overtaking lanes pass each other, I was over taking on my side, then a car was overtaking a car that was over taking a car and was half on my side, I went full Franklin, slowed time and passed between them like a glove.

Yokozuna ,

But in all seriousness, I’m glad you and everyone else invovled didn’t get hurt there. I’m sure your heart was beating in your ears, was it not? Lol

Weirdly I was quite calm about it, just zoned in on a spot down the road and let it happen.

Million ,

Ah yes, I have had that happen before. See that gap between two cars and squeeze through to avoid collision, but somehow manage to hit both of the cars and your car is in someones backyard pool. While the cars you “squeezed through” blast their horn for some reason… (in gta)

dumbass ,
@dumbass@leminal.space avatar

I swear they made the cars magnetically connected to backyard pools, I lost countless cars to peoples pools.

The only LED bulbs I’ve ever seen die have all been from one light fixture. Eaten at least 1 every 8-12 months. I’m not buying new ones to replace them. Just going through the stock I have then going with something that cares less about voltage. I’m pretty sure it’s a power delivery problem and I’m uninterested in trying to solve it because this is the only effect I’ve experienced.

That’s a wiring issue. Bulbs burning out shockingly fast means something else is wrong. Had the same issue in a ceiling light until we replaced the wiring.

Kenny Rogers makes some fine fried chicken, though it doesn’t compare to the actual original recipe that The Colonel sold, which is possible to recreate, but no longer possible to buy, prepared for consumption, ever since KFC took over the store in Corbin.

boonhet ,

I found this version of the recipe online

Does this seem like the real deal, or is it more of a recreation of the corporate recipe?

I haven’t really tried to make it myself, ever (I don’t even own a regular deep fryer, let alone a pressure fryer)

AngryCommieKender ,

The only real deal I know of is this: marionkay.com/product/chicken-seasoning-99-x/

That is, apparently, the actual original recipe that Sanders made.

boonhet ,

Ugh they don’t ship to the EU :(

I guess I’ll have to try the different replica recipes found online. The stuff that you get at KFC itself is mediocre at best and I lost interest in it as soon as a better chicken joint turned up near me.

flerp , to greentext in Anon rides a bike

People say cars give you freedom and while in a lot of places that you can’t get anywhere without one by design that may be true, being able to get around under your own power has always felt like freedom to me.

acockworkorange ,

It gives you freedom to drive to the next gas station.

fraksken ,

While I like to cycle, I also like to go places. Where I live, some places are just too far to get to by bike (I don’t have a shower at work and 70km one way is a decent ride).

To me a car provides a considerable amount of freedom. A bike provides me a different kind of freedom.

Rolder ,

What if you were to go half and half with a motorcycle?

fraksken ,

I’d go full on a motocycle if I found a good electrical one, got the loan for it, get a drivers license for it.

0laura ,
@0laura@lemmy.world avatar

you’re right, in that context a car provides a different kind of freedom. it shouldn’t be like that though.

Annoyed_Crabby ,

It’s really just situational mode of transport. If everyone ride a bike for trip shorter than 10km, if there’s great public transport and bicycle infrastructure to support the biking system, and if places are build in way that’s easier to have public transport to serve, then car will have the kind of freedom it promise.

Still, motorcycle does solve the issue, it’s a middle ground for car and bicycle, it can go long range with less emission, it can free up a lot of space that car will take, and it also help you explore places. In Malaysia, there’s almost an equal amount of car and motorcycle on the road. Sure, it does have problem with people riding like a racer and weave around due to not having enough enforcement, but I’d imagine the traffic get worst without it. And it’s not like car didn’t do that as well.

fraksken ,

I’m in the market for an electric motocycle that can travel highway speeds and gave a span of at least 200 km for commuting.

Needs to be privacy friendly though. So no apps or accounts. Just a key and a simple dashboard.

Annoyed_Crabby ,

Unfortunately i still haven’t heard of any electric motorcycle that can travel such range. You have better option for ICE one though.

fraksken ,

I believe zero motocycles offers some options, but they require you to use a cellphone as dashboard if I recall correctly

FireRetardant , (edited )

I lived rurally most my life and now I live near a downtown core. I still miss the country but i do love being able to walk to the majority of my needs.

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Exactly.

When I’m in my car, I feel trapped into going to places with decent parking lots. When I’m in my bike, I can go anywhere. I park right next to the entrance of stores, I can ride into and across parks, I can stop right next to the lake front, etc. Oh, and I never need to fill up gas or plug in my bike, I just hop on and go.

The main downside is all the cars in the way.

FuglyDuck , to nostupidquestions in ELI5: how do mobile devices know your movements?
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

So, you are supposed to calibrate the pace length, it can guess that but it’s not as accurate.

It uses accelerometers for “fine” movements like bouncing in your pocket or being flipped over (or for augmented reality, etc,) but gps for very coarse positioning. (GPS knows you’re in a building, or maybe one of a few small buildings. WiFi location knows what room you’re in.)

They use everything together to create a picture of your movements.

skulblaka ,
@skulblaka@sh.itjust.works avatar

GPS is good enough now to know what room you’re in, I’ve tested it at my house. It can tell the difference between the 30 feet or so between my bedroom and front door. Someone else in this thread says it’s accurate to about 5 meters.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

A radius of 5 meters- 15 feet or so. Which of you consider the scale of what’s going on (satellites in orbit, pinging your location to a relative pin prick, accounting for relativity,) it’s fucking impressive.

But you might be anywhere along a thirty foot line.

And that’s at its most optimal conditions. Inside a building (particularly commercial or industrial, and particularly larger buildings,) that becomes much, much more problematic.

Which is why they use combinations of things like WiFi location (“improved location services”) to increase accuracy as well as dead reckoning using your accelerometer.

But ultimately, that’s all just a guess, and they’ll frequently cheat. For example, if you pull under an overpass and stop, pretty quickly they’ll start wigging out bouncing you between the road above you or the one you’re actually on. Or when you decide to ignore navigation instructions on the highway- which is why until it updates the map it’ll still show you on the offered route. (Which might be 200 ft down the road, and 50ft away.)

All of that to say that they’re using a lot of tricks to convince you that it’s a lot more precise than it really is.

Sethayy ,

As well as the us military intentionally keeps GPS readings inaccurate, as conspiracy theorist as that sounds lol

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Well, the civilian signals are, yes. Their hardware is likely much more accurate.

How else they gunna get a baddie with a stabby-slashy ninja missiles dropped by some dude in a poorly air conditioned shipping container somewhere in like, Arizona.

SkyezOpen ,

This hasn’t been true for 24 years.

Sethayy ,

I’ll admit i havent looked into it in a couple years, but I could have sworn this was why real time kinematic positional systems existed. I can’t imagine the crystal timer nor the accuracy of a digital signal could be the issu

(Of course I’m too lazy to google it so take this as scientific as the effort i put in, minimal lol)

froh42 ,

There’s another trick - checking against street maps. When you walk/drive/ride around a corner the phone can use it’s inaccurate GPS reading and update it according to where the corner is. Of course it doesn’t use ONE corner. to fully update your position, it just nudges the position a bit closer.

In case you are navigating a lot of street corners, after a time an inaccurate GPS position will be corrected.

There’s even more input to the algorithm (location of known WIFI Hotspots for example etc) and they are all combined with a “Kalman filter”.
