idunnololz , to nostupidquestions in What Android app should I use to browse Lemmy?
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

I’m the developer of Summit. Unfortunately I don’t see anyone mention Summit but I would suggest giving it a try as well.

I think I’ve been a bit slower to implement certain features compared to the other apps, but the app is heavily focused on scalability and performance. Give it a try just in case you might like it. Play store link: Summit for Lemmy

maess ,

Is it open source?

idunnololz ,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately the app is not open source :(

sambal ,

Is that something you would be open to working towards? Since the growth of Lemmy is attributed to Reddit becoming “closed”, I think many users might see it as a dealbreaker or be less inclined to use a closed-source app.

idunnololz ,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

My feelings towards this might change in the future. However for the time being, my enjoyment of the project hinges on the project being closed source. Ie. open sourcing the project will likely lead to me stepping away from the project. So even if this significantly impacts the number of users, I would still prefer to keep it closed source. I’d rather have a fun side project I made than to create a popular project that I do not contribute to. It is unfortunate but it is what it is.

valek879 ,

I’m replying on Connect for Lemmy. I just looked at your app and it’s super dope but I’ve got to say the one thing that throws me off is the button for the link is on the far side from my finger. I also like swiping to reply and vote and nonsense like that and your app doesn’t have it.

Take your time however and implement things well and I’ll keep it in mind. My favorite app for Reddit was Relay I think I will be looking for an app until I get something similar or exactly the same.

List mode ftw

Cloudless , to selfhosted in Is there a video that will tell me how to set up our own server as if I were 5 years old?
@Cloudless@kbin.social avatar

I would advise you to let the experts do the job instead.

You need to protect your server from hackers, viruses, malware, and other threats that could compromise your data or harm your network. You also need to comply with the laws and regulations regarding the content and services that you host on your server. If you don’t know how to secure your server properly, you could expose yourself to legal liability or cyberattacks.

maegul , to world in Russia-Ukraine War Mega Thread | June 25 - July 8 2023
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Hi all … kind of a meta non-news question.

I’ve been thinking about getting a person who writes great Russia-Ukraine threads over on Mastodon to post their threads here. I’ve got a general post about the possibility here: lemmy.ml/post/1528973.

I’ve also pestered @sabbah via DM.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on whether there’d be a good fit here.

The main point is to make it as easy as possible for them by allowing them to post from mastodon still. So the ideal would be that they would create new posts here and create a thread within that post, to which people would be free to comment on of course.

Except that doesn’t seem to fit within the rules here, especially rule [1.1] Submissions must be links to news articles..

Thing is, this person’s threads are full of citations of or links to Telegram sources from within Russia or the region, basically a thread of primary sources that the author is compiling into a digestible narrative. It might really be something people here would appreciate, especially as I discovered them through links provided in a megathread on here.

Sooo … I’m wondering what you think and whether there might be some scope to alter the rules and allow for this sort of thing … the idea would be that it’s something like a journalist live reporting.

WorldNews OP ,
@WorldNews@lemmy.world avatar

Hi,

While Rule [1.1] applies to the main submission post, we would like to clarify that in the case of our mega thread, posting links to social media sources (such as Mastodon) is acceptable as they will be placed in the comments section of the thread.

As of now, we don’t have much experience with cross-posting from Mastodon to Lemmy. However, if you can provide us with some examples, we can explore the possibility of incorporating it in some way. Your input and examples would greatly assist us in understanding the process better and potentially adopting it within our community.

maegul ,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

On posting directly to a megathread … thanks! While this is good, and has already happened in megathreads (I forget which I saw it in), it doesn’t lean into the federation of content that can happen which is what I’m trying to see more of. That is, not just “cross-posting” but the same thread existing on two platforms simultaneously in much the same way lemmy communities exist on multiple instances simultaneously.

Otherwise, happy to talk about the mastodon<->lemmy “cross-posting”.

Here’s a basic demo I’ve written, posting from Mastodon to !test : hachyderm.io/@maegul/110483509521476095And here’s the view of the post on lemmy: lemmy.ml/post/1142168

You’ll see that both lemmy and mastodon users can comment or reply with the only difference being how the two platforms display the threads (lemmy doing a much nicer job IMO)

The key machansim is that lemmy communities federate to mastodon as “users” that can be “at-ed” like any other user from mastodon. Lemmy then interprets such a post as a new post to the “at-ed” community, takes the first line as the title and the rest as the body. The only trickiness is that lemmy will only pay attention to the first “at-ed” handle, to prevent cross-posting and spam.

What I initially imagined was that someone could start their own journalistic megathreads here by doing exactly the above and then replying to their previous post to create a thread on mastodon and a chain of comments to a “megathread” post here on lemmy. This would be the easiest for the person posting from mastodon.

The difficulty for you is that it would be a post that isn’t necessarily to a news source, but just a stand alone post … though the person I’m asking on behalf of is almost always providing sources/links.

Beyond that there’d be your policy of confining all Russia-Ukraine war stuff to the megathread. On this, they could reply to the megathread and basically embed their mastodon thread within the megathread. This would work well. It’s just that finding the megathread from mastodon and replying to it can be non-trivial and may not be available all the time.

For instance, I can’t find the current megathread on my mastodon account and I don’t know why … it’s probably an instance visibility problem and will get better now that I’ve subscribed/followed [email protected] from my mastodon instance. So this may become a good way forward without much hassle.

As for the kind of threads I’m thinking of … here’s an example: hachyderm.io/@mariyadelano/110599817912125441

mub , to asklemmy in People around the world, do you drink tap water without boiling?

UK. Yip. Water “hardness” varies across the country which means people usually prefer the taste of the water in the region they grow up in. Other than all the leaky underground pipes and lack of investment in a privatised service, UK water is actaully very good.

StingyAsian88 , to asklemmy in People around the world, do you drink tap water without boiling?

Lol, I was you 10 years ago. For context I’m Malaysian and we only drink water that is first filtered and then boiled. When eating outside we generally avoid iced drinks unless it’s a reputable shop.

Then I moved to Australia and reacted with utter horror to see my then-bf drink straight from the tap. I was like wtf you’re going to get parasites! Spit it out!

Now I drink water like Aussies and my kid refills her bottle from the tap too. My parents, when they visit, still boil water to drink but they’ve at least stopped thinking we’re trying to murder their grandchild.

I support Pocket Casts because it’s made by Automattic, the makers of WordPress, Tumblr, and WooCommerce. Their CEO, Matt Mullenweg, is someone who seems to really care about the freedom and diversity of the internet. As far as players go, it’s got all the features you’d want for an Android app.

I seldom listen on my PC, but if I want to I can usually find the stream on whatever service the podcast has chosen (their own site, or whichever embedded player they elect to use).

Eh, it's still missing a ton of smaller and even medium sized communities. Pick video games and TV shows for example. A bunch don't have a community or only have a dead one with zero or one posts.

Elektrotechnik , to android in What's something that was dismissed as a gimmick but you liked?

Easily notification light. People always say “oh, it’s totally obsolete with always on displays”. But with a notification light I could focus on other stuff and the blinking light got my attention better. With the AOD, I always catch myself glancing at my phone. Also, the light’s color clearly indicated which app caused the notification. I had White for calls, Green for Whatsapp, Yellow for the ebay app, Red for GMail and so on. “You can do all that with an OLED screen! It only lights up the pixels that-” Can you, though? All apps that I tried were utter garbage. Buggy performance, very battery hungry and very cumbersome to configure. I don’t know if custom firmwares actually have that feature in a usable state nowadays, as I cannot root my phone anymore without losing core functionalities like online banking.

Yeah, everything tends to go to shit with time. I miss my Galaxy S2.

squirrel_bear , to asklemmy in What screams "poorly educated"?

Being poor or lower middle class and voting for right wing/conservatives. You essentially give away your hard earned money and give it to ultra rich and worsen the quality of your life… usually because the right wing scares people to be afraid of other people and new phenomena.

Globalized trade is good actually

aski3252 ,

Globalized trade has been a thing long before neo-liberalism existed, arguably longer than capitalism has existed. Equating neo-liberalism with “global/globalized trade” is incredibly reductive…

EDIT: I read the comment wrong, OP is saying that international/global trade is not inherently bad, not that neo-liberalism is the same thing as international/global trade.

KuchiKopi ,
@KuchiKopi@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t see that comment as reductive. More like pointing out a part of neo-liberalism that the commenter thought was good.

In other words, the comment is simply “globalized economy is good.” The comment is not what you’re inferring: "neo-liberalism is good because globalized economy is good "

may i ask what being a moderator entails to be? Like what tasks, time investment?

Hurts OP ,

Not much at this point, honestly, but the site admins would like me to add moderators, especially from other timezones.

In this instance, in particular, I can say I have had to moderate exactly zero things. Basically, just check the new feed occasionally to make sure everything being posted is relevant to the instance (i.e. pictures, not memes, not politically fueled photos, not shitposts etc.). If a report comes in check it out and clear it, but overall there isn’t too much moderating to do here.
