They should be getting far more than 4.5 years for doing borderline slavery and illegally detaining/kidnapping.

FireRetardant ,

I miss my bouldering gym so much. It was always a great vibe there and people from all skill levels could climb together, chat, help each other out. Any time I went intending to climb alone I still ended up chatting and making friends because so many people are just friendly and happy to be there

Where I moved to has a proper climbing gym but it isnt the same vibe.

FireRetardant ,

I’ve climbed with 10 year olds and 80 year olds. Ive climbed with people who could climb 8 hours straight and those who can only do a few routes a day. So long as you have a good attitude, climb safely and respect others you will likely fit in fine at your local climbing gym.

FireRetardant ,

The victims involved in crashes aren’t always rich. People in other cars or pedestrians and cyclists can be injured by these mistakes.

FireRetardant ,

Thats why cities should build seperated lanes so cars and bikes mingle as little as possible

FireRetardant ,

A better option is to make seperate intersections for cars and bikes. Bike lanes do not exclussively have to run right next to the car lanes.

FireRetardant ,

I see where you are coming from there. My comment is mostly concerned with north america and our street/road design and layout is awful. There are many school zones where cars could easily exceed 100km/h if the driver wanted to. Because of these deisgns I think it is best we keep cyclists and pedestrains as seperated from cars until better street design and traffic calming can be massively implemented. The scale of the street redesign is massive and would have to be city wide to be truly effective.

An easier and cheaper start to pitch politically would be proper bike lanes along major corridors. A few years down the line streets along those lanes would improve and the city could slowly redevelop.

I wish I could just snap my fingers and have safe streets but stroads and the attitude of driving is so bad in much of north america we are going to have to fix it in stages. We can’t just convert our stroads overnight unfortunately.

FireRetardant ,

I agree, everyone thinks cars, bikes, buses, and people all should follow the same line along the same corridor. Having bike lanes seperated more can be very benefecial and helps seperation without need for physical barriers. For example a road could run down the center of a commercial area, with a dedicated BRT lane, and bike/ped pnaes closer to the businesses or even a seperate enterance/laneway behind the businesses dedicated to people.

But most of North America thinks a painted bicycle gutter along a busy road, crossing many car intersections and entrances is the best we can build.

I wonder how much energy google wastes on its AI service in the regular search just to give me a worse answer than the top results I was actually looking for.

FireRetardant ,

Do you have any idea how many boxes, crates, hands and other surfaces the produce has already touched? Its also just sitting in the open at the store for people to touch, sneeze on, drop on the floor. The carts and the conveyor won’t make it any worse and you should be washing all produce before eating it anyway.

FireRetardant ,

There are screentime apps that can track and limit the useage of certain apps. You can use your bike rental app as long as you want but can set a specific time limit for others like 1 hour on youtube, 30 minutes for lemmy etc.

I used one before and it helped me quantify the time I was wasting and gave me tools to limit my usage.

Washington man arrested after fatally shooting teen who had BB gun (www.usatoday.com)

Myers, who says he’s a licensed security guard, was sitting in his car Wednesday to conduct “overwatch” while his son trains because “he has seen numerous crimes occur” in the parking lot, according to the probable cause statement....

FireRetardant , (edited )

Every sporting store in my area specifically states to not bring firearms/guns into the store. I have seen many models of pellet/bb gun that look like real firearms until you handle them.

I’m not defending the actions of the security guard but rules like these could help prevent a similar situation in the future.

FireRetardant ,

You inform an employee and they escort your gun with you in the store. It is also important to note I am in Canada and we have different gun laws.

FireRetardant ,

I never claimed they did anything wrong. I propose a set of rules that could help prevent anoter incident.

FireRetardant ,

E-cigarettes are so awful for the planet (and probably their users). They shouldn’t be sold until some better waste management system for them is developed. Something similar to a beer can deposit may work.

Each vape has a $2-3 deposit. All stores that sell vapes must accept old vapes and refund the deposit. This concentrate the waste to go to landfills or a recycling process and should help reduce litter from discarded vapes.

The litter from the discarded vapes can be hazardous to the environment because they contain plastics, batteries, heavy metals, and addictive chemicals like nicotine. These same materials make the vapes difficult/expensive to recycle.

FireRetardant ,

A complete ban would be ideal

FireRetardant ,

People need an incentive to justify bringing them back to the store instead of tossing them out their window when they stop working.

FireRetardant ,

Please don’t tap/knock on turtle shells. It would be like someone knocking directly on your bones.

FireRetardant ,

Your bones are not weak but its still not a good excuse to abuse a turtle by knocking on its shell.

FireRetardant ,

There is also the extra radio, sirens, lights, and some have built in radar and plate scanning cameras. I’m pretty sure there are extra batteries and a stronger alternator to keep systems powered and ensure engine starts if auxiliary power is drained.

Different crusiers also have different set ups. Some are normal patrol cars while others have K-9 accomadations, shield and extra defensive gear, pursuit intervention tools like spikes and stop sticks. Cops use such a wide variety of tools that one crusier can’t fit every tool for every situation.

FireRetardant ,

Idk. Cops can spend all day in their cruisers and blow through tons of fuel/power during a high speed chase. The EV would also have to power all the electronics on the cruiser including lights, sirens, radios, their laptop thing. Battery capacity might not be able to power the cruiser long enough. Especially if the crusier works a day and a night shift with different officers. Last thing a cop wants is back up cannot arrive because they are charging a battery.

Nearly every animal will eat an egg given the right oppourtunity. It makes sense given it has everything needed to create a new animal. The same goes for milk for mammals.

FireRetardant ,

Many conservation authorities look for volunteers for tree planting, invasive species removal, and cleaning up litter. They can be a great way to start helping your local areas.

Louisiana chemical plant threatens to shut down if EPA emissions deadline isn't relaxed (apnews.com)

A synthetic rubber manufacturer accused of increasing the cancer risk for the nearby majority-Black community in Louisiana told a federal appeals court it will have to shut down “likely permanently” if it’s forced to meet the Biden administration’s deadline to reduce emissions....

FireRetardant ,

Wouldn’t the EPA shut them down anyway at the deadline? Thats what the EPA would do right? They would follow through with their regulations right?

FireRetardant ,

Reduction of consumption is our only answer. Your car didn’t magically become eco friendly because ford said they would plant a couple tress after you bought it.

FireRetardant ,

Someone has played a little too much Rimworld.

FireRetardant ,

Colonists too. Just good luck keeping their mood up afterwards.

FireRetardant ,

I usually use corpses for that and save my kibble for the animals over winter.

FireRetardant ,

True, but its all about the aesthetics of eating your rotting friend because they had the audacity to raid my colony.

FireRetardant ,

I don’t think public deaths is a valid cost for creating self driving cars. We could be builidng safer and more effecient transportation systems. Some billionaire is going to make even more money because they were allowed to use the general public and city streets as a testing ground for their product. This is not fair to the family or the people who are injured or killed by self driving cars.

FireRetardant ,

Driving while inebriated is illegal, self driving is not.

Traffics jams and erreactic behaviour could be fixed if everyone is in a self driving car, but at that point it woild be far more energy effecient, environmentally friendly and cheaper for society to build electrified transit instead.

If you prioritize the street so that only self driving cars are on it and they need wireless communications to function, how do other road users like cyclists and pedeatrians safely use the street?

Self driving cars are not here to make your life better, they are here to make a handful of people rich.

FireRetardant ,

There are greener, more energy effecient and more socially fair ways to get the same results than selling everybody a high tech steel box.

FireRetardant ,

The same problem could be fixed with electrified transit and walkability. Transit would also be even more environmentally friendly.

Plus we could still develop self driving cars but do a lot more testing before we set the public as the guinea pigs to see if they are safe.

Id also argue that we cannot claim this is the worst self driving will get since self driving cars are only used in a few areas right now.

Sticky trick: new glue spray kills plant pests without chemicals (www.theguardian.com)

The insect glue, produced from edible oils, was inspired by plants such as sundews that use the strategy to capture their prey. A key advantage of physical pesticides over toxic pesticides is that pests are highly unlikely to evolve resistance, as this would require them to develop much larger and stronger bodies, while bigger...

FireRetardant ,

We gotta start somewhere. Remember that food security is a big part of the issue as well. We can’t just stop spraying the toxic stuff without an alternative because global food systems could collapse. I don’t like that we were using the toxic stuff in the first place but it has become a cornerstone of our food production.

FireRetardant ,

How do you stop consumers from wasting food from the production side?

FireRetardant ,

I have a buddy who prefers these over the chewy dipped versions and I can confirm he is a pyschopath

FireRetardant ,

Electric cars aren’t going to fix climate change

FireRetardant ,

Here is my reasonable argument against EVs. EVs only really solve the emissions part of the equation. They dont solve the massive amounts of paved surface, private ownership of thousands of pounds of steel and plastic, they still use massive amounts of energy to move that steel and plastic and building cities for cars is largely ineffecient and expensive to maintain.

We could do a lot more for the environment than EVs. Id rather see their subsidies go to things like electrified transit, cycling infrastructure or walkability improvements.

FireRetardant ,

We should defintely still make EVs, overall they are going to be better than ICE. We just shouldn’t force/subsidize everyone to have to buy and drive an EV like we did with ICE cars.

FireRetardant ,

The vast majority of people who are anti car are anti car centric urban environments. Noboby is expecting a small town of 300 people to build a tram, we are expecting places with congested highways to build transit instead of “adding one more lane to solve traffic forever”

FireRetardant ,

The only reason people in urban centers do not have transit is because governments neglected to build it. If they can build a 6 lane highway through your city, they could build transit.

We shouldnt use rural and spread out areas as an excuse to not build our cities and denser areas better and service them with transit.

FireRetardant ,

Yes and i agree with that sentiment. 20 years down the line we will realize our cities are just as unwalkable and unable to be served by transit if we build them to exclussively serve the car. We should build cities so walking, cycling, transit and driving are all realistic options. For most north American cities we only prioiritize the car.

FireRetardant ,

I think much of north america is dug so deep into car centric planning that making drivers pay the full cost would be too expensive for a significant portion of the population and workforce. I think the alternatives need to exist before the taxation because many people are constrained to their car being their only reliable way to get to work.

Making that cost more could put huge financial stress on a family whereas building the rail before the taxation could provide a cheaper alternative before the taxation even begins.

FireRetardant ,

There was a 3 hour stand off so it is likely they requested armored assistance as things developed.

FireRetardant ,

Plus burning it allows those toxins to disperse across the environment while more traditional recycling can keep the toxins mostly concentrated on landfill/processing sites.

FireRetardant ,

The post was not clear to me that OP was talking about incineration facilities, I know several people who burn plastics and garbage frequently on their own property/camping. Even well filtered incinerators have a considerable amount of fallout.

FireRetardant ,

This was not an automated model of vacuum. Connection features for automated models makes sense.

FireRetardant ,

Or i could just plug my vacuum in when I’m done with it.
