OPNSense is generally pretty easy, more powerful, and more open than pfsense. I started with pf but went to OPNSense and have loved it!

doctorzeromd ,

Honestly, I found it really easy. I don’t have a background in IT or anything either.

What did you find difficult? Setting custom firewall rules is harder to understand, but the general functionality of setting up a NAT and even installing and configuring ZenArmor were super super easy.

Do old phones just sound better?

So I’ve been messing around with a few phones lately, a nexus 6p, a pixel 3a xl, and a s21 ultra, and I’ve noticed that on the 6p and 3a xl both sound louder, punchier, and clearer when compared to the s21 ultra. They also both have that thicc notch design with a massive speakerphone which might add to the high volume...

doctorzeromd ,

Speaker technology (at least for something “old school” like stereo) hasn’t improved significantly for a very long time. That’s not to say it’s not good, we just figured out how to make a good speaker a long time ago.

DSP has improved since then but no amount of DSP will make regular speakers sound like great ones (like the nexus 6’s) of the same size or type

There needs to be a way to only get one push notification for every new message in a group chat

I dont know about others, but sometimes I am not able to check my phone, or be fully present in a conversation that I’m part of. Maybe I’m concentrating on work, or driving, and not able to look. It gets distracting when my phone is constantly buzzing and chiming for 5 minutes straight. Muting the chat can help, but if you...

doctorzeromd ,

Matrix can send notification via ntfy? Do you have more info on that?

doctorzeromd ,

There are mumble -> matrix bridges you can set up. It doesn’t integrate with element, it integrates with matrix, for which matrix is a client.

Beginner in need of real help!

I’ve been interested in self-hosting for a while, but didn’t really know where to start. I’ve never messed with Linux before and wanted to jump ship from Windows since Microsoft decided to start putting ads everywhere. I came across this post [lemmy.world/post/6542543] which was exactly what I was looking for to start, and...

Are you sure that docker is configured properly? What do you see if you do docker ps

Mirror all data on NAS A to NAS B

I’m duplicating my server hardware and moving the second set off site. I want to keep the data live since the whole system will be load balanced with my on site system. I’ve contemplated tools like syncthing to make a 1 to 1 copy of the data to NAS B but i know there has to be a better way. What have you used successfully?

doctorzeromd ,

That won’t keep it constantly in sync though

doctorzeromd ,

I met my partner on hinge. Dating apps can be hit or miss, but I found it decent.

doctorzeromd ,

Life is Strange (1 and True Colors are the best in the series IMO)

doctorzeromd ,

I’d start with 1, they’re not chronological but I think it was the best in the series. True Colors is second.

doctorzeromd , (edited )

I picked up a Roborock S5 vacuum and flashed valetudo onto it. It’s so fun!

doctorzeromd ,

This will work, as long as you both have the same client version.

doctorzeromd ,

Could you include a picture of what the spatial audio settings look like? Most likely you can’t have them both on at the same time because they do different things (spatializing a stereo stream vs binauralizing an object-based mix)

doctorzeromd ,

Why not?

doctorzeromd ,

Ahh got it. My search history says I read the follow up, but not the initial article.

theverge.com/…/anker-eufy-security-camera-answers…

That’s ridiculous and unsettling, especially that they claimed it wasn’t possible initially. I wonder if they were not aware that it was possible or whether they were lying. I’m not sure which one is worse.

I have a eufy doorbell cam, and I’m genuinely very happy with it. Since it’s not actually looking into my home I’m less concerned about this particular security issue. I hope they do better moving forward.

doctorzeromd ,

Your memory is in line with mine, I have no idea what pro-piracy things the previous commenter is referring to, but would like to read about it.

doctorzeromd ,

Could you link the information about the “special patches to play leaked games”? That is not my memory at all.

Do you often hear the ringing of switching power supplies and devices when you are in a quiet space?

I’m curious, how many people are aware of these sounds. I have designed, etched, and built my own switching power supplies along with winding my own transformers. I am aware of the source of the noise. So, does anyone else hear these high frequency sounds regularly?

doctorzeromd OP ,

I have thought about that, the issue is I’d need to re-run all but 1 of my Ethernet cables to a place where I can put the Celeron box. Once I start messing around with VLANs this is probably what I’ll do, but it’s going to be a big project.

I’m definitely going to give Adguard Home a shot.

Any thoughts on the best solution for now, basically putting the firewall in between the router and modem? If I plug it into a LAN port on the router and set up DHCP so it is the new gateway, that should work, right? I really wish I could plug it into the WAN port but I don’t think DHCP will traverse the WAN to LAN ports on the router.

doctorzeromd ,

Where are you seeing anything saying that CD project red games won’t be sold on the GOG store?

doctorzeromd ,

I don’t see any reason to believe that it would be different from the rockstar launcher. You can still buy rockstar games from steam.

doctorzeromd ,

I was a teenage exocolonist. I hadn’t even heard of it, but it’s one of the best games I’ve played in the last 5 years.

Kind of a visual novel, card puzzler, and social sim. Like if persona had poker instead of turn based battles.

doctorzeromd ,

I finished it yesterday. Played through the ending twice, and was planning to do it more but the second ending was so perfect and imperfect at the same time, that it just felt like it was the ending I wanted.

Amazing game, now I’m looking for similar ones!

doctorzeromd ,

Some of ASUS’s phone have headphones jacks too, notably the ROG phone line (excluding the 3 IIRC)

doctorzeromd ,

What other crpg style games have you played and enjoyed? I’m trying to figure out if I should play it or give something else a shot

doctorzeromd ,

Some are harder as you go, but yeah nothing is too hard until the end of some storylines in act 3, which is of course what you would expect.

doctorzeromd ,

Not that controversial, I also didn’t think act 3 was up to the par of 1 and 2.

I felt like the last 3 big decisions you make were pretty hard. I’m not sure how to do spoiler tags otherwise I’d be more specific

doctorzeromd ,

That seems to just be a joke/rumor. There’s no evidence that he would actually be going to Bungie.

doctorzeromd ,

That’s one of my favorite meals! Merry Christmas!

doctorzeromd ,

I thought the word faucet was both pulled and pronounced flaucet until I was 18. Nobody ever called me on it for some reason.

I chalk it up to dyslexia and the infrequency of encountering the word.

doctorzeromd ,

When iPhones get RCS won’t this stop being an issue?

travel routers

So I’ve seen the TP-Link and GL.inet travel routers, and it looks like some of the GLs are/were built to run wrt firmwares. Stock TP firmwares have been pretty full features in my experience. I really want USB-C power. The GL wireguard support looks useful too, but it looks like their newer stuff is proprietary? Another want,...

doctorzeromd ,

I have a slate (705S) and I love it. I have a wireguard server set up on an RPi at home and when I travel I plug in the slate, connect it to the hotel wifi (or Ethernet if I can), and flip the switch to turn on the VPN. All my traffic goes through my home connection, and I can still access my internal services.

I’ve even used it to save the day when an AirB&B’s wifi was too weak for the living room smart tv to connect when the family wanted to watch a movie.

doctorzeromd ,

What connector? I am writing from my ROG phone 6 and have no proprietary connector.

doctorzeromd ,

I’m a pretty big fan, my last phone was an ROG Phone 2 and now I have an ROG phone 6. I stream a lot of PC games to my phone when I’m hanging out, so the triggers are really useful and I like having a headphone jack.

It seems like it’s cut off too soon, what the heck’s going on?

    doctorzeromd ,

I played through the whole game a couple months ago after only having the demo (and playing it dozens of times) in high school. Great game.

    doctorzeromd ,

Wasn’t there a Shadow of the Colossus remaster a few years ago?

    Professional/Power apps for Android?

I’m curious if anyone’s come across a list of “power” or “professional” apps for Android. I mean things like Termux, Audio Evolution, or PowerDirector, which provide functionality that you would normally need a computer for. I’m being purposefully broad so that I can discover more cool apps, but generally I mean...

    doctorzeromd OP ,

I work in studio recording, so I have a similar app!

We use a siglent for actual calibrations though.

Image toolbox seems pretty cool! I’ve switched to Joplin for my notes but quillpad seems nice too
