I was following this walk-through (lemmy.world/post/6542543) for getting Docker and all its container apps set up, so that’s why I went with Ubi Server. I downloaded 24.04 as its the latest version. Would Mint be able to substitute Server for those things?

My Daily Driver has Mint on it and its working just fine. If I can use Mint instead of Server, that’d make things so much easier.

Lol, I AM using Linux for the first time. But yea, I’m trying to use the most user-friendly things to accomplish what I want to do. Thanks anyway for trying. :)

SecretSauces OP ,
@SecretSauces@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, figured it would be an easy shorthand. But with so many different distros out there, I can see how that could be seen as just another one of those. I’ll keep that in mind in the future.

SecretSauces ,
@SecretSauces@lemmy.world avatar

I’m actually diving into Linux and Docker for the first time right now, and the setup you described is exactly what I’m looking to do. But seeing as this is my first time. I was hoping I’d be able to get some confirmation of what my idea is or find faults with my setup.

In terms of hardware I have on-hand, I’ve got two laptops. One of which is a half-top, meaning it has no screen. The other is my daily driver. Both are running Linux Mint.

The half-top has 1TB of storage and would have Docker installed with Plex/Jellyfin, the *arr suite, and HomeAssistant. On my daily driver, I would be running Portainer or Heimdall to access everything and make changes within the half-top itself. I would also use this to access any of the media I have stored in the half-top.

Does that sound like everything would work?

SecretSauces ,
@SecretSauces@lemmy.world avatar

Then how do you learn about new music?

I thought about (and still want to) keep a self-hosted music library, but one of the things i look forward to is the New Music playlist that updates every Friday on YTM. I’ve found so many good songs and artists that way.

Well there’s your problem. You’ve got to plug it back in!

SecretSauces ,
@SecretSauces@lemmy.world avatar

Begins? It’s been slowly getting worse for years

SecretSauces ,
@SecretSauces@lemmy.world avatar

I’m calling it now. In… 5 years AI will be so advanced and readily available that you won’t be able to tell a real person from an AI in the digital realm. The biggest problem with that is when it’s being used by bad actors. From scammers to presidential candidates to foreign governments. Scammers can already call your mom or dad, use AI to spoof your voice from even a sample of a recording (like a voicemail greeting), and fool them into giving them money. Anything other than in-person conversations can be fake. This can only have negative consequences.

SecretSauces ,
@SecretSauces@lemmy.world avatar

I hate that my only realistic options for presidential candidates are

A) a geriatric wannabe-dictator who wants to dismantle my country and it’s laws for selfish gains

B) a geriatric president not only ignoring calls for an investigation into Israel conducting genocide, bit actively providing the country with the weapons to do so

This timeline is fucked.

SecretSauces ,
@SecretSauces@lemmy.world avatar

If i wanted to list everything wrong with A, it would be a novel

In the collective hands of everyday people.

The issue is, the collective is divided, on purpose, by greedy corporations, corrupt politicians, and dishonest talking heads in the media.

The scientific community could yell from the largest pulpits, but as long as we are separated by “my team vs your team” politics, and everything being politicized, we will remain stagnant and doomed. Progress is dead. If not now, soon. Especially as AI becomes smarter and more easily accessible. We won’t know what is true or AI-Gen garbage in a couple (and i mean a COUPLE) of years.

I wish, i PRAY this comment is the most incorrect thing i ever post and we somehow turn things around. I try to play my part by voting, turning to renewables in energy and anything i buy, and informing myself and those around me of ways to be better. But individual people divided can only do so much. It will take the collective human effort to get on the right side of this. Because the collective bad actors, the rich elites, are doing what they need to keep us on the wrong side of progress.

How to Figure Out What Your Car Knows About You (and Opt Out of Sharing When You Can) (www.eff.org)

Cars collect a lot of our personal data, and car companies disclose a lot of that data to third parties. It’s often unclear what’s being collected, and what’s being shared and with whom. A recent New York Times article highlighted how data is shared by G.M. with insurance companies, sometimes without clear knowledge from...

I wonder if there’s a way to disable that kind of reporting. Obviously, that’s not an acceptable answer to the issue. Sharing of information like that needs to be opt-in with full disclosure and not buried within pages of legalese.

But as a moderately tech savvy person, maybe there’s a way to disable it’s network connectivity so it can’t phone home anymore.

Keeping in their line of thinking, you’re actively destroying the earth and killing the people God created so you can selfishly get yourself into heaven.
