My boss and I are working on moving to Coreboot on our machines. We have a bunch of older computers that support it (e.g. Dell Optiplex 9020/9010/7020/7010), they all support Coreboot/Libreboot firmware so not only will we save on hardware costs, we are moving towards using Proxmox VE with Kicksecure on all of our employees computers.

I also want to setup Nextcloud for file storing and self hosting for OnlyOffice. We can also move toward Bitwarden, we unfortunately still are using LastPass. I would also like to replace our routers/switches with those that can run on OpenWRT.

We only have about at most 30-40 computers total operating total at both of our locations. I figure why not? My boss is giving me a chance to apply these skills and I’m hoping we can just start moving away from anything that requires a subscription. We can save so much money.

I’m work in IT as a support specialist that manages computers for about 30-40 people and we don’t even use those tools like Defender, Intune, etc. We can definitely make the switch from Windows to Linux. It’s not impossible, especially when you have someone in your company who knows enough on how to self-host and use Linux efficiently.

It does suck, but people who go to college know how much they’re going to pay. If anything, they should consider starting at a community college. Specialized schools (e.g. nursing schools, pilot school, etc.) often come with higher costs, but people need to weigh the potential benefits against the expenses. Community colleges offer more affordable options for foundational coursework before transferring to a specialized school if needed. Also, a significant portion of students already recieve some form of financial aid.

ELI5: The Linux xz backdoor situation

PLEASE. I keep seeing it in memes. As I understand it the latest version of the xz package (present in rolling release distros like Arch and SUSE Tumbleweed) has “a backdoor”, but I have no earthly clue what can be done by malicious folks with access to that backdoor or if I should be afraid or how to check if my distro is...

I’m pretty sure two gru_bob and gru_kevin have Libreboot support. I forget the name of the exact laptops, it should be in their documentation

Is there a way to download Debian with GNOME without all the bloat?

lemmylem , (edited )

Yes, I understand that, but I don’t need all the games and stuff installed by default. Sway is a whole different experience. I use i3 on my older laptop (Macbook A1181 w/ Libreboot) but I personally wouldn’t want to use it unless I needed to.

GNOME is a gorgeous desktop environment, I just hate the fact that I have to take a additional 5-10 minutes every install just removing all the stuff I don’t need. Is there a debloater script for GNOME that you know of?

It can play all my games at 1440p and ultra settings (RDR2, GTA V, etc.) I’ve never had a time where I’ve wanted to upgrade from it. I built most of this computer for about $450-$500, all used parts I got off eBay plus some other parts that I pulled from my other computer

lemmylem ,

A bit, it’s actually not too bad. Rarely any micro stuttering on ultra settings in RDR2, I am actually planning on buying the AMD 7900XTX graphics card to put in this machine. I want to run local LLMs on it, I’m not too much of a gamer as I used to be. Anyways, this thing rocks! I love it. Eventually, I’ll plan on buying a MSI Z690-A DDR5 motherboard and install Dasharo firmware onto it.

Pornhub shuts down in Texas... and predictably, VPNs benefit (

From the article: “Unsurprisingly, this skyrocketed searches for the best VPNs. According to a SlashGear report sent to Mashable, searches for “Texas VPN” jumped by 1,750 percent in the past day. It also spotted a 1,600 percent increase for the phrase “How to access Pornhub.””

Do you think the word "trauma" is overused?

For instance, when someone describes going to school as “traumatic,” they often simply refer to it as a negative experience. This is not to say that everyone who went to school never had a traumatic experience; however, some individuals appear to overuse the term. Another example could be considering being lightly pushed...

Same thing for me when I was 13. I freaked the fuck out when I saw a wikipedia article on the right. I thought I was going to jail the next day lmfao

lemmylem OP ,

Dealing with people like that can be super draining. I had this ‘boss’ once who was actually just a coworker. He loved to pick apart everything I did. When I stopped trying to go above and beyond and just worked at a pace that felt right to me, he got really annoyed. He acted like he had authority, saying our real boss sent him to nag about my ‘bad’ work.

Before I left, he made a big scene about being the best worker there and called everyone else terrible. He’d complain about me sitting down to do inventory and then sit down himself a minute later, just showing off his hypocrisy. If you called him out on anything, he’d sulk and be a pain for the whole day. It’s tough working with someone who’s both a bully and acts like they’re the victim. You never knew what mood he’d be in; if he was mad, he’d come in trying to make everyone else mad too, even yelling at his girlfriend on the phone and blasting music all over the warehouse.

And the drama never stopped with him, always bragging about how he never got help from anyone. But I’m like, you were fed as a baby, right? You had a roof over your head? He just seemed ungrateful. Someone needs to give him a wake-up call. The worst was my new manager never stepped in to stop him, and they both acted like I was the problem, making fun of me every day. I didn’t want to sink to their level, but sometimes you’ve got to stand up for yourself quietly, keep notes, and be ready if they push too far. Some people are just awful.

lemmylem ,

I own a firearm because I don’t want to be a victim again. Until you know what its like to truly fear for your life, only then you’d understand.

Although, I’m not going to defend this guy who ruthlessly shot that poor girl, simply no excuse for that.

You said: ‘gun people are the biggest bunch of frail cunts’

What about the people who physically can’t protect themselves? Are you going to call a rape victim who has a gun to protect themselves a frail cunt?

lemmylem ,

1.) Do you expect all criminals to follow the law?

2.) Are you assuming that every rape victim is crazy?

3.) What about when law enforcement doesn’t show up in time?

4.) How do you know they’re not 3D printing firearms?

5.) What about when your government becomes tyrannical?

lemmylem , (edited )

1.) That doesn’t really mean anything.

2 & 3.) How do you know they didn’t receive help/treatment? Also, you can’t just assume that every person is the same, most people go out of their way to get proper training to use a firearm.

4.) No, it’s gotten way easier, there are blueprints everywhere online freely available and guides on how to make 3D printed guns at home.

5.) Why did the USA pull out of Afghanistan then? We have the best military in the world, yet we couldn’t beat the people who live in the desert that had basically nothing? Urbanization is a nightmare in any war. In the end, it doesn’t matter how many resources they have. You have to remember that people in the military have friends and family back home, there would be a lot of internal conflict. Also, If we leave the people defenseless, we’ll end up just like China and Russia.

lemmylem ,

I’m wondering, is there any anonymous VPN that supports port forwarding to port 80? I’m thinking about self-hosting a website from my server at home under a VPN.
