This happened in Sherman TX, a city most famous for the Lynching of George Hughes and subsequent riot in 1930, commonly known as the Sherman Riot.

It’s not like the people involved in that lynching felt bad about it or regretted it. And then they passed that hate to their children who passed it on to their own children. Those people were the grandparents and great-grandparents of these kids. Some of them are still alive and still preaching their hate to the kid. Some of them were alive long enough to do it before they died.

As if any of that matters at all in the least bit because your complaint is just a massive strawman but I’ve been all over including the pesky countries you all like to forget even comparing quality of life in the States.

GiddyGap ,

Not a straw man. Personal experience. I’ve spent most of my life in Europe, in several different countries. And spent more than a decade in the US.

I can comfortably say that most Europeans, especially those in the middle and on the lower end of the income scale live vastly more comfortable lives than most Americans with similar incomes without having to worry about medical bankruptcy and crushing student debt. Not to mention having the time off to travel and parental leave to form families without all the financial stress Americans experience.

And this isn’t even a theoretical or metaphoric description.

We have candidates now already laying out plans for massive workforce reduction in the already overworked, short staffed federal government, which will make them even less productive, which will prompt these people to point out that lowered productivity as evidence for why they should take even more resources away.

They’re literally pushing to eliminate jobs, not create jobs, and to bring unemployment to veterans (who are a big demographic in the federal workforce).

@troed@fedia.io avatar

Maybe it's time to move on from using SSNs for security? We have someting similar in Sweden - "person numbers". If I call the tax authority and ask for someone's "person number" they will tell me. They're not secret in any way, and thus not used as some form of authentication either.

chrischryse ,

But how exactly does it work when applying for something like a credit card or going to a doctors office and filling out a form? Because here in the US those ask for SSN

Marafon ,

They ask for SSN because there is no other form of national ID in the US (by design). SSNs were not introduced with this use in mind in fact they were explicitly meant to not be used this way, but society has slowly twisted it into a de facto national ID.

chrischryse ,

what was meant to be used then?

brianary ,

Americans explicitly didn’t want a national ID.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

And yet we have multiple of them now. Drivers license, SSN, and if you/your parent are/were military, EDIPI/DoDID.

brianary ,

Military, sure, but driver’s licenses are state-level, not federal. Health care has been using birthdate like a password (one that is largely publicly available) for way too long now. At least financial institutions can use account numbers and financial history and code words, but even all that isn’t great.

It’s a messy patchwork, but I think at the time of the creation of the SSA, the US may have still thought of itself as a land of second chances. IBM numbering Holocaust victims probably didn’t help the idea of a national ID, nor did the victim narrative of groups like the NRA.

I’m not sure if it’s possible not to have a national ID anymore, so denial of it just forces a terribly kludgy implementation from whatever is around.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Sure. As long as you don’t need to

  • access any federal buildings
  • fly domestically
  • exist after May 7 2025
  • have a non-expired drivers license

Then it’s optional. Non-RealID isn’t offered anymore in Ohio as far as I’m aware, I’d imagine other states are the same.

FireTower ,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

My state still offers non-RealID compliant licenses. And the down side isn’t all federal buildings only certain ones plus domestic flights. But a passport will also work for those if you don’t have one.

Nordics have resolved this by having the strong digital authentication. Services like banks and tele operators work as identity providers for individuals/companies.either through mobile network or app on your phone, and these is a central service that links these together.

This way third parties can safely identify you, and also it follows same OpenID/OAuth2.0/MFA principles, which are industry standards.

untorquer ,

Having experienced both systems the Nordic ones are well thought out, streamlined and feel extremely secure.

    Was it?

32,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed and almost 75,000 injured, two-thirds of whom are women and children. Some 60% of the housing units have been damaged or destroyed, and almost all medical facilities have been made inoperable. Today, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children are facing starvation because Netanyahu won’t let in sufficient humanitarian aid, while thousands of trucks are waiting to get into Gaza. To pretend that Israel is not violating international law or interfering with U.S. humanitarian aid is absurd on its face. The State Department’s position makes a mockery of U.S. law and assurances provided to Congress.

Cause that doesn’t seem like knob gobbling.

Maybe it was when he went on Face the Nation and said:

what we are seeing in Gaza today is literally an unprecedented crisis. It’s not just that 30,000 people, two thirds of them are women and children have already been killed. We are looking at the possibility of hundreds of thousands of children starving to death. The United States of America cannot be complicit in this mass slaughter of children. So it is one thing to talk to Netanyahu to pressure Netanyahu. But here is the bottom line. Year after year, we have provided billions of dollars in military aid to the Government of Israel. Right now, you have a right wing extremist government under Netanyahu. There are plans to provide him with another $10 billion in unfettered military aid. What you can say to Netanyahu, stop the slaughter, allow the massive amounts of humanitarian aid that we need to come in to feed the children. Please, please, please. Oh, but by the way, if you don’t do it, here’s another $10 billion to continue the war. Now we have written a letter to the president, it turns out that Israel is in violation of the law, stopping American humanitarian aid is in violation of the law. That should be clear, no more money to Netanyahu’s war machine to kill Palestinian children.

Cause that doesn’t seem very vile either.

Oh maybe the other commenter is just full of shit and doesn’t even listen to any news sources of do even the most basic reading. Maybe they’re just some bitter little troll sitting in a basement somewhere.

edit: Maybe it was in July of 2023, even before the October 7th attack, when he boycotted Israels Presidential speech to a session of congress, saying:

It is no great secret that I strongly oppose the policies of Israel’s right wing, anti-Palestinian government. We provide them with $3.8 billion in aid. We have a right to demand they respect human rights.

What a strange cherry-picked, contextless quote to pretend to get upset about.

You claimed he’d said vile things and “gobbled Israels knob” whatever that means, he’s clearly done no such thing.

Lol, you’re so obvious, little chode load. Go try to waste someone elses time I don’t have time to dunk on you all day.

    homesweethomeMrL ,

My dude, your passion and zeal for all things truth liberty and justice are being distorted by your use of the medium.

If one of the most progressive and liberal politicians in one of the highest offices in the land isn’t liberal or progressive enough for you - I get it. But you need to understand you’re not going to get the world you want by commenting. Or making videos. Or marching in the street.

You’ll hopefully move it in the right direction, yes. But actual change - actual decisions and signatures that make heavy loads move and people get things are all done in boring flourescent-lit office buildings that don’t pay much money at all. And you’re not doing that, we’re guessing.

Besides, Bernie’s one of The Good Ones. He’s got a whole career you can check out. Attacking his office is So Not Cool, that your defending-the-attack-by-inference is also not cool. That’s why people are mad.

If that was your point, well, then you did wrong again. But if it wasn’t and you’re just trying to get us there as fast as possible through any means necessary, you might think about re-phrasing or retracting some of that.

Man, you sound like the zen I wish I could harness and feel. I really appreciate your tone and presence.

Well I laughed at your joke.

Because someone is afraid of the fact that

He’s one of the few politicians that is actually liked.

    morphballganon ,

Anyone who is liked by many has at least a few who see them as a threat.

TrueStoryBob , in Buyers Are Avoiding Teslas Because Elon Musk Has Become So Toxic

Didn’t someone have a picture of a Tesla in the wild with a bumper sticker that read something like: “I bought this before I knew Elon was a complete idiot.”

    FakeGreekGirl ,

I’ve seen that sticker in person, multiple times.

Also seen a few Teslas that were completely debranded.

    Wes_Dev ,

Debranded? Nice. I dislike that modern cars are covered in logos and tacky chrome symbols and words. Give me a nice plain car with nothing but paint on the outside.

    BleatingZombie ,

Unfortunately, debadging is a pretty common thing in the car community regardless of how well liked the car is

I see it on a lot of BMWs

And then you get people who not only have the premium badges but also a license plate that say the cars make or model AND a frame around the plate that also says it lul. I see it all the time in Cali. I want to de badge my car, mostly cause if they want me to advertise for them they should be paying me. It’s just that the front and back badges are indented Into the car and I haven’t found any replacements I like. I also haven’t found any custom maker online, maybe I just need to commission a 3d printer to try something for me.

    FakeGreekGirl ,

Didn’t realize that. Purely anecdotally, I don’t recall seeing any debadged cars other than Teslas out on the road, but it’s not like I’ve been looking for them.

    PersnickityPenguin ,

Lol, my Chevy bolt was debranded when I bought it.

someone needs to make some car badges that have the same style and size as the T logo to replace them with. maybe a big ‘F’ for Fucklas or something

    blazeknave ,

Buying that for my neighbor. We’re both Jews. Called him out last year and he acknowledged it but they bought the car a while ago.
