How long did it take for them to turn it off?

paf0 ,

Seems entirely reasonable to me, depending on the country it costs them extra to route your calls overseas to another network.

paf0 ,

Oh wow, you rule.

I installed Windows in a VM for the first time in years just last week. I’ll never use it enough to want to pay $200, this is perfect.

paf0 ,

We’re number one at saying we’re number one

paf0 ,

Did you read the post? They said there is no affiliation and minimum info online

paf0 ,

Yes, both sides bad, but Biden less bad. Making government easy to work with should be the bare minimum. We don’t have to throw them a parade every time they do something sane, they work for us.

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

paf0 ,

Yes it does, and wait until you hear about literally every other industry.

paf0 ,

To be fair, crypto will never stand a chance against fiat as a means for payments because governments ensure that it’s complicated to tax. However, the underlying blockchain technology remains very interesting to me as a means of getting around middlemen companies.

paf0 ,

Saw that too, it’s annoying. In a weird way, spam kinda legitimizes this platform as a Reddit alternative.

[US] I'm hesitating launching my own business because I'd lose health insurance for my family. What are my options?

I have everything pretty much ready to launch full time. Time, skills, customers, support from family. But I’d leave my current job behind and with it my family’s health insurance for the foreseeable future. I can’t afford any of the options I’ve seen. It’s the one thing holding me back. Any ideas for affordable health...

paf0 ,

in a political environment where health insurance has successfully executed regulatory capture of all relevant laws and agencies.

Well said. It blew my mind when Obamacare, and my Massachusetts Romneycare before it, turned “giving people healthcare” into “giving people health insurance”.

People wanted health care, they pretended to give it to us, and they ensured it meant more profit for the industry.

paf0 ,

Glad they’re not afraid to call out Samsung here. Most manufacturers don’t care about repairability.

I have to wonder if they’re finding issues with the new Google phones. Supposedly Google has committed to have the Pixel 8 parts available but I haven’t had to look into it.

paf0 ,

They do have versions of the Gemini models that are open sourced, called Gemma. So far they don’t work quite as well as the Llama ones from Facebook but I’m sure that will change.

paf0 ,

To play devil’s advocate for a moment, is it really a free market if we are incentivizing one technology over another?

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

paf0 ,

Interesting take. I definitely see it more with the MAGA crowd. Their idea of it is so absurd too. It’s always some half-witted meme where they take a photo of the most frail person they can find and label them a vegan. It’s silly, because there are plenty of jacked vegans out there, and there are also frail omnivores.

I understand people’s perspectives when it comes to the “meat is murder” vegans but otherwise it’s just a diet. I personally switched to eating meat just once a week late last year and I eat vegan most other days. I feel great, but I don’t make it anyone else’s problem.

paf0 ,

No, sorry, eating meat is not the same as murder, it’s just nature.

I’m not a fan of factory farms either, but mostly for the antibiotics. The animals do suffer and people who can afford it should probably buy more certified “free range” options, but I’m not about to shame people for their dietary choices or incomes.

paf0 ,

Eventually there will not be jobs left to do. Then what?

paf0 ,

There are always jobs to do for the people who can get them. However, if robots and AI take all the jobs, then people can’t get jobs.

And, in a “post scarcity” world, do the people who control the robots and AI get to keep all of the money and food, or do you have a plan for that?

paf0 ,

This is just the beginning. Two centuries? More like 20 years, the technology is improving at an exponential rate.

As a society we need a plan.

paf0 OP ,

Haha, you’re right on that last bit. A bit of random curiosity on my part and it might have been the wrong place.

paf0 ,

That’s how The Herald rolls, it’s has long been the most sensationalistic Boston newspaper.

paf0 ,

Maybe he’s just trying to make it cheap enough for Dorsey to buy it from him.

paf0 ,

At this point, everyone who makes that choice knows what they are getting into.

paf0 ,

Hard to be a force for good when “Open” AI is not even available for download.

paf0 ,

I’ve been a developer for over 20 years and when I see Autogen generate code, decide to execute that code and then fix errors by making a decision to install dependencies, I can tell you I’m concerned. LLMs are a tool, but a tool that might evolve to replace us. I expect a lot of software roles in ten years to look more like an MBA that has the ability to orchestrate AI agents to complete a task. Coding skills will still matter, but not as much as soft skills will.

paf0 ,

Waymo exists and is now moving passengers around in three major cities. It’s not taking over yet, but it’s here and growing. The timeframe didn’t meet the hype but the technology is there.

paf0 ,

It’s just going to create a summary story about the code base and reference that story as it implements features, not that different that a human. It’s not necessarily something it can do now but it will come. Developers are not special, and I was never talking about Copilot.

paf0 ,

Ok.

paf0 ,

Try for a second to think beyond what they’re able to do now and think about the future. Also, educate yourself on Autogen and CrewAI, you actually haven’t addressed anything I said because you’re too busy pontificating.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

paf0 ,

That much stock is not easy to sell, he’d tank the value of the entire company and never retain anywhere near 193M. You could sell that much gold.

paf0 ,

It depends. Every carrier has better or worse spectrum and/or tower coverage depending on where you are.

paf0 ,

By this logic Llama should be ranting like our drunk uncles on Facebook. It doesn’t though, just like Gemini won’t from Reddit content.

paf0 ,

I suppose that’s better than being a ‘white supremacists first platform’ but I bet they’ll probably still do that too.

paf0 ,

fwiw, XMPP/Slack/Discord/etc basically solve the same problem that IRC already solved. Software Engineers just reinvent the wheel again and again as everyone loves a green field.

That said, Meta cannot be trusted. They’re going to do a year or two of embrace and extend, pretending to be good citizens. Then they will invent some crisis that causes them to want to de-federate, likely that content on other servers is not moderated to their standards or that convoluted features of their extended protocol are not being met. This take seems pretty spot on to me.

paf0 ,

I suppose that applies more to XMPP, but not everything has to be a business, and you don’t have to be an ass about it.

paf0 ,

And those developers get told what to do. The wheel also gets reinvented by PMs and entrepreneurs who think they can do it better. Sounds like someone is salty about their software maintenance job.

paf0 ,

Sure, but all of those things could have been done by extending the existing protocol.

Also, fwiw, it has had media sends, presence and support for encryption for a very long time. The rest could be added. All of those things could have very well been an IRC client with a couple of extra features and a server upgrade to queue messages.

paf0 ,

It is now but the older formats used to be more like an executable byte code. Efficient but insecure.

paf0 ,

Right, I don’t need a pickup truck, but I do need a trunk to put my groceries in to feed my entire family. I also need to do it quickly. They said 5 miles, that’s a long way.
