Rentlar , in Biden pledges to name progressives to the Supreme Court, suggesting he expects vacancies

Biden’s going to need everyone’s help. Turn the Senate and the House super Blue. Even if you hate Biden because of Israeli support, vote for your Rep and Senator that can deal with this corruption. Add to the bench until the traitors Thomas and Alito become irrelevant. Revise the number of Senate and House seats.

psycho_driver ,

Even if you hate Biden because of Israeli support,

Trump said that “he (Trump) fully support’s Israel’s Gaza genocide.”

Anything Biden can do, Trump can (and would) do worse.

hddsx ,

Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything better than you.

Biden: I can support Israel’s killing of people in Gaza Trump: I will deport anyone that supports Palestine

Feathercrown ,

I hate that this sounds so dumb but we now live in a world where the truth sounds stupid

BarbecueCowboy ,

Having been around awhile, it’s so weird that people are trying to make the case that a republican presidency could be a good thing for… just about any country in the middle east. Not saying that any party is going to spend much time on it, but it’s just a weird stretch.

Paddzr ,

Because people are that fucking gullible.

It’s irrelevant what’s happened or is happening unless it comes from timtok/Facebook/lemmy/reddit post.

Not voting for Biden is exactly what they want to achieve and people who haven’t read past titles are their target.

WanderingVentra ,

Nobody thinks Trump will be good for the Middle East. They are just trying to pressure Biden to actually change his policy. The idea is he’ll change course if he sees it’s not popular and could threaten his election. I say publically it’ll make a difference because I don’t want Biden to support a genocide and it’s the only tool I have, but I doubt it will. I’m sure they’re all like me and live in a blue state, which means we’re useless for the electoral college. He needs to try to get purple states.

BarbecueCowboy ,

I don’t think it’s even just the red/blue state issue. I haven’t seen many in a prime voting demographic who care about this issue and the ones that do care are concerned in terms of wasting taxpayer money. The overlap between demographics who aren’t statistically likely to vote anyways and people who are concerned about this issue is looking like it may be pretty damning.

WanderingVentra ,

Ya, but he shouldn’t turn away the youth vote imo. They had bigger than normal turnout in 2020 and they mostly went to him. It was still a small percentage of what the youth vote could’ve been if they got off their ass, but I think it still matters. It seems a risky gambit to abandon them for more reliable voting blocks that are also more hustorically conservative, especially if it means supporting a genocide and geographically and diplomatically isolating the US against the world. I have a feeling if you give the youth reasons to come out, they will.

I also feel like Gen Z is more political than past demographic, at least the ones I’ve talked to have been. But I might be all wrong here. Elections surprise even the pundits and analysts, so who could know after 2016.

fuckingkangaroos ,

I’m sure they’re all like me and live in a blue state

And I’m sure that 70% of them are shills paid by the Kremlin to take down Biden so they can get Trump elected again.

WanderingVentra ,

Nah, I think genocides are just legitimately unpopular, especially among the youth who are probably overly represented on online media.

WindyRebel ,

Again, a vote for a giant douche or a turd sandwich.

makyo ,

The craziest thing to me are those further leftists threatening to abandon Biden and let Trump walk in.

I mean, they can complain and oppose the democrats all they want but they should also never ever forget that today’s GOP is just the latest incarnation of the leftist’s longtime fascist enemy. Keeping them from power is and always has been a top priority.

nickwitha_k ,

I think that the majority of those are either accelerationists and/or state/political actors. Accelerationists soundly believe that the ends justify the means and think, despite a clear lack of solid evidence (and contrary evidence ex. Spain), that making things worse will force people to act to make things better. Mass repression and genocide of LGBTQ+ and POC are acceptable losses to reach Utopia… despite that literally never being the outcome at any point in recorded human history.

HawlSera ,

Right? it’s like saying “I wanted chicken, not beef, but all we have is chicken… So I’m just gonna eat the pellets in the Rat Poison bottle instead!”

retrospectology ,
@retrospectology@lemmy.world avatar

People keep claiming this, but never actually specify how Trump could possibly be worse than full-on support for genocide. Biden is 100% for the genocide, he has proved this and has put zero restrictions or conditions on Israel’s far-right regime.

What we’re seeing in Gaza under Biden will be the exact same thing we see under Trump.

This is not the argument neolibs want to be making at this time.

barsquid ,

Yeah why would people just assume it will be worse with Muslim ban Donald who says “finish the job” and “deport the protesters?” Silly geese.

retrospectology ,
@retrospectology@lemmy.world avatar

No, you’re just illustrating what I’m talking about. How, specifically, do you envision Donald Trump being worse on this genocide than no strings attached support that Biden has given?

This lesser of two evils shit isn’t working because Biden is showing himself to just be literally out and out evil. You guys need to come to terms with what you’re supporting here, it’s time to acknowledge how far to the right you’ve had to go to be trying to scare people into voting for your candidate with “nuances of genocide”.

    doc ,

    Sure you do. Think back to your school classes. Senators are elected for 6-year terms. Fetterman is basically brand new so that means his election was the last cycle, or 2022. 2022 + 6 years equals 2028 reelection.

    Hijacking this comment therapy promote Ranked Choice Voting.

    Feathercrown ,

    RCV, Approval, and STAR my beloved

    barsquid ,

    STAR, score, or approval! Not sure why people are obsessed with ranked, they must love curing ballots and being prevented from tallying districts individually?

    100% would rather have ranked over FPTP, just to be clear. FPTP is toxic garbage.

    Feathercrown ,

    Not sure why people are obsessed with ranked, they must love curing ballots and being prevented from tallying districts individually?

    No need to be hostile to them. RCV is pedalled very hard, so naturally people who’ve heard about alternative voting systems will know it first.

    WanderingVentra ,

    Is there good videos on STAR or score like there is ranked or approval? I first heard about alternative voting systems from that one stick figure YouTube guy. Not sure if he’s made any other election based videos I’ve missed or if other people have made equally good ones about other voting systems.

    barsquid ,

    I don’t know if they’ll be as entertaining as a pro YouTuber but there is a webpage with some explainer videos www.starvoting.org/videos

    WanderingVentra ,

    Thanks!

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

    Because those still encourage strategic voting. With RCV, you can vote your conscious and be certain that it won’t backfire and help your enemies.

    barsquid ,

    I’d rather a voting system maximize voter satisfaction than minimize strategic voting. And I’d rather have people exhaust their ballots intentionally than accidentally.

    What are STAR voters going to do, give everyone either all or no points? Their votes might not be counted in the final round, that’s their choice.

    Cornelius_Wangenheim ,

    Being forced to vote strategically is why so many voters are dissatisfied.

    barsquid ,

    I mean, you can look at the mathematical simulations of the models or you can argue over the semantics. STAR discourages voting strategically somewhat by having two stages. If that is not enough, even voting purely strategically it has higher voter satisfaction than ranked.

    lolcatnip ,

    I remain highly skeptical if the idea that many people would engage in strategic voting unless it’s extremely obvious how to do it.

    MegaUltraChicken ,

    xmunk ,

    The UK has shitty FPTP like we have here but their government never deadlocks. The US government can fail in a very special way where the president can be reduced to only being able to veto legislation while trying not to be impeached and it’s fucking dumb.

    We need a government that’s both representative and functional and there’s a reason why modern nations have looked at directly elected executives and parliamentary system and vastly preferred the latter.

    Maggoty ,

    We’d need a constitutional convention. Or the largest amendment we’ve ever had. RCV can be done simply by the states.

    xmunk ,

    Yea, if RCV is all we can get I’m not going to let the perfect be the enemy of the good… and hopefully with RCV we could get better leadership… but it’d be wonderful if we could get off direct executive elections.

    @Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

    When another trustee asked Dungan if she personally objected to an illustration of cross-racial friendship, she demurred, simply declaring that she was just trying to avoid “situations like that.” Situations like what, exactly? She didn’t say. Dungan’s behavior is a perfect illustration of the “anti-woke” tap dance. The person alleging nefarious wokeness never admits to their own bigotry, instead pretending that they’re reacting to “woke” people who are “pushing” an agenda, in this case through innocuous poster art. Of course, the entire premise of the argument is rooted in bigotry, as this example shows. It presumes that the feelings of real or imagined bigots who might take umbrage at such an image are of paramount importance, and that everyone else’s freedoms must be curtailed to appease them.

    Fucking thank you, Amanda Marcotte. Nail on the head.

    And thank you for using the word “innocuous” because my god it’s a picture of people holding hands in a school. It probably had something like “teamwork makes the dream work” on it because holy fuck these people probably boil their eyeballs in piss before they stick them in their sockets.

    CoderKat ,

    Yeah, it’s good to see reporters actually pressing back on these blatant trolls with their well understood tactics. It’s a shame, however, that the more centrist media is rarely willing to do the same. It’s a common trap that people think you must give equal time to both sides in order to be fair. Reality is that some sides are so dumb and inconsequential that they don’t deserve any air time.

    It’s stupid that the school district even moved the kid to a different class. They never should have caved an inch. That just empowers these maniacs to keep doing this racist, time wasting drivel.

    My current conspiracy theory as to the accident:

    The ship lost main power because the corporation that leases it doesn’t pay for sufficient maintenance because that would eat into executive bonuses and shareholder dividends. The ship lost control at a pretty pivotal time with no safety measures whatsoever in place, because “most of the time they aren’t needed.” And because this is the chronically negligent maritime industry, not much will be done about it industry wide.

    Believe it or not, the insurance companies drive maritime safety requirements since they hate having to pay out for things like this. The classification societies that regulate and inspect ships to approve for insurance coverage have very strict and well thought out safety requirements that get better any time a new failure mode is discovered.

    I personally think this one was human error in an emergency situation.

    Theory: They lost primary electric service and began a slight drift to starboard. When they got backup power online, they began a crash reverse to slow down. This would hinder rudder control since the ship was still going forward and now just creating turbulence with the prop. Reverse would torque the stern to port, swinging the bow to starboard, as we saw. The bow thruster was offline due to the power issues.

    BlueEther ,

    from the photos that I saw thismorning she had also dropped a bow anchor, my thoughts are if this was done when the bow had already began its drift to starboard that could have swung the stern even more to port.

    At least they called in in

    captain_aggravated ,
    @captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Insurance companies, being for-profit institutions, are poorly suited to manage industry safety.

    As for theories as to exactly what happened in terms of “the power failure caused the rudder to remain 4 degrees to port and stopped the bow thruster, causing the ship to veer off course” or whatever…I’ll wait until Brick Immortar reads me the NTSB report.

    Being a pilot (as in an airplane driver, not a harbor pilot) as long as I have, I’ve had this conversation a lot:

When things are further apart you put a lot of miles on your vehicle very fast (easily 10-20k miles a year if you have a relatively short commute and limited social life)

    A single vehicle costs about as much as an individual’s median annual income in most rural areas now, and because individual privately owned cars are the only transportation, plus services are far more centralized now (meaning you have to travel to the next town for this that or the other) you truly need 1 vehicle per adult

    CMLVI ,
    @CMLVI@kbin.social avatar

    There is further conversation with another user below this, but that isn't the case in some places, namely Virginia.

    Additionally, statutory rape isn't just bound to age of consent. There are myriad other statutes it can apply through, namely family, age difference, and positions of power over minors above the age of consent.

    Serinus ,

    The statutes (and therefore the term statutory) define the age of consent. Sometimes the age of consent can vary and isn’t as simple as one number.

    Cryophilia ,

    By definition, it isn’t

    That’s the whole point of the law

    CMLVI ,
    @CMLVI@kbin.social avatar

    Take it up with Virginia; age of consent there is 15. Intercourse with a minor above 15 as an adult can still give you statutory rape charges, as referenced here: "The age of consent for intercourse is 15 years old in Virginia; however, there are other sex acts that set the age at 18. These acts include cunnilingus, fellatio, and anal intercourse, which means that minors cannot legally consent to certain sexual activity. Additionally, if you are an adult and have sex with a person under 18 years of age, you may be prosecuted for statutory rape. Statutory rape is generally charged as a Class 4 Felony, but the exact charge and penalties will depend on all the factors and ages involved."

    Pulled from https://www.roanokecriminalattorney.com/how-does-virginia-define-consent/

    It isn't always the case, generally age of consent precludes it, but not always. Age of consent isn't a get out of jail free card. Additionally, it doesn't specify about relations between people in positions of power.

    It's all moot anyway, Roiland lives in CA, and he was inviting a 17 year old to his house in Los Angeles. Age of consent there is 18. Did he assault her? No, but what 36 year old man is inviting a 17 year old to his house? Multiple other reports of girls at 18, still in high school, also receiving advances from him.

    samus12345 ,
    @samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

    If there are exceptions then “age of consent” in Virginia doesn’t mean the same thing as it does in other states, so all this shows is that they’re re-defining the term.

    CMLVI ,
    @CMLVI@kbin.social avatar

    I don't think that tracks; I've always been under the impression that age of consent was just when you could consent to sexual activity. It didn't account for age differences, power dynamics, or other factors that push it towards statutory rape. It was "at this age, they are able to consent to activity", and then you would have the limiting factors of age difference, power imbalance, family, etc applied through other statutes.

    I very well could be wrong or just applying knowledge of my own local area to places that don't operate that way, so I'll bow out on that. I do know that age of consent isn't just a blanket shield against statutory rape in some locales or situations, though. The "statutory" part of statutory rape isn't limited to only age of consent.

    SheeEttin ,

    “Statutory rape” just means rape by law, not necessarily by any kind of consent (since legally they can’t).

    SCB ,

    These acts include cunnilingus, fellatio, and anal intercourse, which means that minors cannot legally consent to certain sexual activity

    These are anti-gay laws btw. That’s the entire purpose of these specific exceptions.

    Seems like he waited until they were 18 before meeting them, although he would send sexually-charged texts to women as young as 16.

    Roiland usually asked people how old they were, if they were single, and if they were “into girls.” In three cases, when the person said they were under 18, Roiland would message them again months or years later. Those three conversations started with people who said they were 16 at the time, and continued for years, until they were 18 and older.

    CorruptBuddha ,

    So did he actually groom them? Because the way this is written it sounds like he asked them their age, and then waited for them to be legal, which is creepy, but I wouldn’t call it grooming.

    But as he partied with Los Angeles’ superstars and traveled the country for conventions, he also found he could use his fame to strike up conversations and develop relationships with young fans, including some who were underage.

    The article then goes on to discuss his conversations with underage fans. The article uses “young” because his conversations with of-age but teenaged fans were also bad.

    Talking about the title

    ericisshort ,

    thomcat ,
    @thomcat@midwest.social avatar

    The fact that these women and enby folks were underage is like the most important part of the story. Calling underage girls “young” and not correctly calling them underage in the title of the story is called burying the lede.

    Justin Roiland used his ‘Rick and Morty’ fame to pursue young and underage fans, text messages show would have been a better title.

    Pips ,

    For most people, except apparently many in this thread, “young” heavily implies underage. When character limits matter, it’s okay to start by saying “young,” which is accurate, then clarify further in the article.

    Cryophilia ,

    Lemmy has an unusually high concentration of people who have an inability to understand context.

    For example, every joke, the top comment is “I don’t understand, can someone please explain?”

    Pips ,

    I tend to give jokes a pass. Humor is often contextual and cultural so some jokes really do require an explanation.

    SCB ,

    Per the article, he explicitly did not pursue underage fans, though.

    Roiland usually asked people how old they were, if they were single, and if they were “into girls.” In three cases, when the person said they were under 18, Roiland would message them again months or years later.
