I tried several and most did not play well with the Steam Deck. Serum and the car survival game were the bigger disappointments, there; really wanted to try them.

I’m awake you can download proton hacks to make them work, but that’s not the point, imo .

What are some hidden indie gems nobody knows about?

Which indies did you discover and would love more people to know about? I’ll start: The Pale Beyond. Not sure if it’s a hidden gem tbh, but it’s such a good story rich game. I laughed, I cried and felt the characters struggles. If you like story rich games/ choices matter, check it out.

silentknyght ,

I’m currently totally hooked on Tiny Rogues.

silentknyght ,

See… I think it’s kind of a bad game for all the same reasons.

I think I bounce pretty hard off the stated intent to make the player feel the suffering of living through war. I’m not going to play a game that intentionally sets me up to fail.

silentknyght ,

More walking simulator less actual gaming.

silentknyght ,

I also like LoseIt!, but somehow I also ended up paying for it, too. $20/yr. I don’t like the free version as much

silentknyght ,

So, is this still a scam if everyone gets refunded?

silentknyght ,

Dave the Diver has lost me at about 8-10 hours. I detest doing chores for underwater people.

The game is entirely too wide and too shallow: it has too much in it but very little depth. Kind of ironic.

silentknyght ,

These are true criticisms, but I’m not sure if they’re fair. To the best of my recollection, Steam had none of those things in 2008, either, about the time they were the age of the EGS, now.

You could say they should (be able to) compete on the merits alone, without free games or paid exclusivity, but that argument wouldn’t reflect reality: you need a hefty carrot to lure people away from their comfort zone.

silentknyght ,

Bad take.

I’ll remind you that Steam needs SOME competition in order to actually get better, and I can’t think of anyone else able to do it (Microsoft has kinda already tried and failed). Remember when Steam suddenly addressed long-standing issues with the client and storefront a couple years ago? That was because the EGS appeared.

I’ll also remind young folks that the Internet was extremely negative regarding steam when it was new. Yes, I’ve been on Steam for 20+ years.

Tldr: EGS is fine. Relax.

Edit: clarity

silentknyght ,

I agree it’s a bad first step. I’d keep trying idea on the table, but I’d start by working with the European car manufacturers to create huge tariffs on those cars. Make it impossible for them to be sold at those prices in Western markets

silentknyght ,

I agree to a point. I also miss the excitement of those flash sales, but they were probably predatory–like gambling or FOMO–and I greatly prefer the modern game return policies—arguably what killed off those flash sales–which I can enjoy all-year round.

silentknyght ,

If you’re patient, many games’ sale prices slowly get bigger over time.

silentknyght ,

If you’re on Lemmy, you’re already set up to “not understand”. You probably have no trouble installing a new chat app and using it.

I chat with 20-30 people in my neighborhood, all middle aged adults, and they all have iPhones. If I were to ask, only one would accommodate my request to use a different app, and it’d still be disruptive to his routine. I’m not angry at any of these folks; I blame Apple. Though they have a good product, they are totally behaving like a monopolist.

It’s not the features and never has been. It comes preinstalled, it just works, and it works perfectly with most people. No one calls it “iMessage”. They call it “texting”.

silentknyght ,

I mean, before Gmail, I had a new email address every 2-3 years. I’ve had Gmail for what, almost 20 years? That’s not what I’d define as “ephemeral.”

silentknyght ,

Hmmm. I own it but haven’t ever played it. Are there bad controls or other bugs or quirks with the original… You know, something that would justify a remake?

The Cybertruck Is a Disappointment Even to Cybertruck Superfans / Looking at the specs alone, the car is delivering 30 percent less range than expected for 30 percent more money (www.vice.com)

Anything in particular? I’m not great at understanding things that aren’t said.

YSK that SLS, an ingredient added to most commercial toothpastes, causes canker sores (askthedentist.com)

I learned about this many years ago and the difference after I started using only SLS-free toothpaste was night and day. I used to get canker sores any time I would bite the inside of my cheek, hit my gums with the hard parts of my toothbrush, etc., and this completely stopped a while after I switched to SLS-free....

silentknyght ,

Yes. Cyberpunk and I were oil and water when it was first released. The 2.0 patch made it a different game, and for some magical reason, I jive with it now. It’s one of the best realized worlds. I just finished my first playthrough and I’ll buy the DLC and play again soon!

silentknyght ,

I mean, I’d rather have my parents around in my life and my children’s, than have their money.

silentknyght ,

Which one? I use “White Noise” by TMSOFT. It’s UI is from 5-7 years ago, but it still works really well. It’s mostly a background noise maker–and has lots of variety–rather than strictly white noise.

silentknyght ,

“Sleep Timer” by CARECON GmbH. Its indispensable for adding a generic sleep timer to any audio or video that does not have such a feature.

silentknyght ,

Wait till over 40. You’ll think your 30s were blissful.

silentknyght ,

I certainly have much better tools to handle my various hangups, but I have a lot more of them, too.

silentknyght ,

Is this article ai generated? It sucks. Are the toxic products all PFAS products? It sure insinuates as much, but doesn’t actually say that. There are lots and lots of “toxic” chemicals; there are over 10k PFAS compounds alone, and toxicity for those is being claimed at ppt levels, which is often lower than can be detected by test methods. Therefore, it’s no wonder they’ll take it slow, rather than eliminate large swaths of the economy without ready replacements.

Terrible article.

silentknyght ,

World of Warcraft. 2005 was a hell of a time for that game.

silentknyght ,

Do you mean Vine? I can tell you a few things about that.

silentknyght ,

Yes, did you also notice how the word “taste” doesn’t appear in the article? It’s all about recycling and nutritional value… which is even more wasteful and pointless if it won’t be eaten.

silentknyght ,

I’ve never heard of this. Interesting!

California workers who cut countertops are dying of an incurable disease (www.latimes.com)

“Nobody uses water,” one man in a Dodgers cap said in Spanish when Maria Cabrera approached, holding flyers about silicosis, an incurable and suffocating disease that has devastated dozens of workers across the state and killed men who have barely reached middle age....

silentknyght ,

Just you? Or people in general? And, what does the mask block or protect against?

silentknyght ,

FYI: this is a speculative article; they are guessing and don’t know how it will work, so there are no real details.

silentknyght ,

Which comes first, the comment or the content?

I’m happy to comment, but (1) it takes a lot of effort to make a good comment, and I’m not sure I regularly have meaningful things to contribute, and (2) many posts are retread memes, reposts, or iterations on slow-moving US political nonsense, and as such not worthy of commenting, and (3) new newsworthy posts are rare.

This is when I browse everything. It’s even worse in my subscribed communities.

silentknyght ,

Curious what you decide. I feel trapped. My Gmail has been my primary account for almost 20 years. With that kind of longevity, switching would be extremely disruptive.

silentknyght ,

I think you run into this problem anywhere in the country. We were recommended our solar company by our neighbor, who had a good experience. They finally finished our job, and mechanically, they did a fine job. But their interpersonal interactions were mostly bad, and my wife would vehemently not recommend them to anyone else. Seems like it’s going to be a crapshoot. Good luck

silentknyght ,

What about if the product arrives with damaged or missing pieces (and the packaging is fine)? Serious question.

silentknyght ,

I don’t think so.

My in laws are very technologically illiterate. I bet they have never opened word pad except accidentally… but I guarantee they know what “Word” is and think “word pad” is just some nerdy tech person word for the software they know.

I bet the number of people who both rely on word pad and who don’t know about any other free alternatives is so very low.

silentknyght ,

I’m in the same boat. It’s as if they wanted to do original work but we’re scared of going “alone” without the bankability of big-name IP. They changed too much; the names are the same, but it’s not the story I recognize.

silentknyght ,

I consider it “cheering for the underdog.” When they are no longer the underdog, then the cheering ceases.

silentknyght OP ,

I’m thinking of it like the micro plastics that were purposely added to bath wash and soap, and now are banned for use in that purpose. I’m not entirely sure I understand the logic behind why those are (justifiably) banned, but microfiber cloths are not.

My stupid question is because I haven’t seen any other news articles specifically talking about microfiber and its contribution to micro plastics.

silentknyght ,

I was actually strongly considering a zenphone 10 until this announcement. Now I’m wary that the already-short software support will be even shorter.

silentknyght ,

So, I actually read the article. It sounds like they could or should work, in theory, but because of fraud and/or marketplace incompetence, they do not. I bring this up only because I don’t think the discussion on the topic has been nuanced enough to distinguish between idea and implementation.

silentknyght ,

Hard truth? Reddit conditioned me to NOT participate.

Nearly time I wanted to discuss something or ask something important to me, my posts were deleted by mods. The few times posts would stay was because they were meme shitposts of easily digestible image content: scroll and move along. Any actual discussion was verboten.

/r/mk mods were particularly awful. Fuck those guys.

silentknyght ,

I never knew that! Thanks for sharing!

silentknyght ,

Agreed. If it was “intentionally added” PFAS, it would say that, and that might be a big deal. I read through the article and didn’t see that. Just speculation that it might be. PFAS is everywhere.

CFATS is important and should be renewed, but the wheels haven’t fallen off… Yet. Most companies/ facilities expect it to be renewed and so are continuing their programs. The real issues will pop up in 12+ months if it’s still not renewed then.
