I keep telling people- the queer genocide that has already begun with Republican restrictions on trans rights and medical care is going to ramp way up and encompass queer people as a whole. Including my daughter.
And yet I keep being told I’m excusing genocide by voting for Biden in order to stop Trump from killing her.
Bro he shot teargas at protestors for a shitty photo-op and that wasn’t even the worst of it, also, that implies that getting the red scare treatment wasn’t a hell unto itself, people had their lives ruined by that shit on the reg.
Do you think this might be conflating internet-style “genocide” with the kind of genocide that involves gunning people down at an aid truck while they queue for food during a famine?
Moot point as I really don’t think either party would be doing anything to stop the crisis. I do think we should be more careful with how we dilute language, though.
Not all genocides involve shooting people at an aid truck.
Some US laws have been described, including by journalists Emily St. James and Katelyn Jones, as meeting criteria mentioned in the United Nations definition of genocide, including laws banning gender-affirming care (“causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part”), and those allowing child protective services to pursue child abuse claims against the parents of children receiving gender-affirming care and remove said children (“forcibly transferring children of the group to another group”).[26][27]
Transgender healthcare bans in the US have been condemned by medical organizations. A report published by Yale School of Medicine in response to bans on gender-affirming care in Alabama and Texas argued that the bans were no more ethical than a prohibition on healthcare for any other life-threatening medical condition.[28] The president of World Professional Association of Transgender Health wrote an opinion article in the New York Times stating her view that these laws constituted an effort to “rid the world of transgender people.”[29] Similar sentiments were expressed in a WPATH public communique: “Anti-transgender health care legislation is not about protections for children but about eliminating transgender persons on a micro and macro scale.”[30]
WASHINGTON — The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization — denounced the onslaught of transphobic statements threaded throughout the annual CPAC political gathering this past weekend. For several days extremist politicians and commentators peppered hateful statements toward trans people casually through remarks on unrelated topics. The wave of hatred culminated with a speech in which a Daily Wire commentator called for the “eradication” of transgender people.
The social conservative wish list calls for ending abortion, diversity and inclusion efforts, protections for LGBTQ people, and most importantly, banning any and all LGBTQ content. In fact, “The Mandate for Leadership” makes eradicating LGBTQ people from public life its top priority. Its No. 1 promise is to “restore the family as the centerpiece of American life and protect our children.” They are explicit in how they plan to do so, as you’ll see in the paragraph below. They plan to proceed by declaring any and all LGBTQ content to be pornographic in nature.
“Pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children, for instance, is not a political Gordian knot inextricably binding up disparate claims about free speech, property rights, sexual liberation, and child welfare. It has no claim to First Amendment protection. Its purveyors are child predators and misogynistic exploiters of women. Their product is as addictive as any illicit drug and as psychologically destructive as any crime. Pornography should be outlawed. The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned. Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders. And telecommunications and technology firms that facilitate its spread should be shuttered.”
And if you think Joe Biden is in favor of any of that, you’re insane.
I am getting really fucking tired of people telling me I should sacrifice my daughter to this genocide because there’s another genocide somewhere else. Along with people like you denying it’s even happening so you can accuse people like me of supporting a different genocide.
Denying that an ongoing genocide perpetuated by Republicans that my child will be caught up in if Trump gets elected isn’t even happening implies that, at the very least, you don’t give a shit if my child dies and that voting for Biden wouldn’t help anyway.
Because it’s either that or you are totally ignorant of many years of Republican attitudes towards queer people in the U.S. and the many attempts to erase them from society which are only gaining steam.
And I am giving you the benefit of the doubt that you don’t live under a rock.
Don’t worry they’re putting significant effort into that front, we’ll have a Mars colony before 2050, just about the time that the equatorial regions are getting roughed up from climate change
Don’t worry, they view us very similarly to how they view other “livestock.”
They’ll just use fancier words when they’re aiming it at humans because a lot of us know how to read, so they need to obfuscate it when it comes to us.
Nitrates are a huge concern and linked to colon cancer at this point. In basically any preserved lunch meat even if “nitrate free” where celery salt is added and usually creates more nitrates than the nitrate added stuff. who.int/…/cancer-carcinogenicity-of-the-consumpti…
Grew up in dairy land where lunchmeat and beef were just everywhere. Both my grandmothers died of colon cancer. I’ve been vegetarian over 13 years and will never go back.
That’s it?! Just 3 million?! Also, why are the execs who orchestrated this not personally liable as well?! This insanely small award from a corporate behemoth just encourages corporate terror. Fucking disgusting.
The execs who did this need to be in prison. Any lower level employee would have been arrested and charged with a felony
Stochastic terrorism is spreading hatred and fear that is likely to make someone, somewhere, commit a violent act against the targets (or individuals within the targeted demographic). In this case, specific eBay employees were told to target this specific couple to shut them up. I don’t know how precise the instructions were but the targets, and the people told to target them, were not random.
Not to worry. It’s public domain! Freedom! Steal away!
This is such a shitty take.
The quote near the beginning of the article is the correct point of view:
“It’s important for the preservation of our cultural record, for meaningful access to older works for inspiring future creativity,” Jennifer Jenkins, the director for the Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke Law School, said.
Creative works entering the public domain is the norm. The past decades of Disney paying to get copywrite time extended are abnormal.
The author is using nostalgia and some cherry-picked examples to fear-monger in favor of corporate control over creative works. He might as well be kissing the mouse’s boots.
Don’t disagree with you on copyright at all. I think you might be misreading the tone of this article though. It seems a lot lighter to me. At least, quoting a bunch of comedians joking around about possible uses of public domain characters would be a weird choice for a scare piece. The author has another recent article with a jokey tone too.
I once stood within 3 feet of Greg Abbott. Every single day of my life, I regret not punching him straight in the nose. It wouldn’t have changed anything, but he most certainly deserved it then, and double deserves it now.
We recently tried, and the whole thing played out like a corruption carnival. An astounding number of “liberals” in the Texas legislature suddenly switched sides on the biggest smoking gun issue they could have impeached him with (that he had illegally given information to Nate Paul to influence an investigation). Turn them upside down, and watch the money fall out of their pockets, I say.
For those who want to see what I’m talking about, look at how many democrats voted to acquit on article 4 as compared to every other article:
If you’re implying violence, I can nearly guarantee that it would make him a martyr for the cause. The religious right love to see their leaders on crosses down here.
The absolute best hope for Texas is for liberal candidates to unite around issues that moderate rural Texans can get behind. When democrats in the federal government get our candidates to do things like make strong anti-gun statements, it only ends up making it impossible to win here. We have to focus on getting power before we make strong statements about using power in ways that offend rural Texans.
I’ve heard that line of thinking my entire life as things have gotten worse and worse and fascism and Christian conservative bullshit has taken a stronger and more vicious grip, it’s time for a violent revolution.
I think you’re not understanding that I’m only talking about Texas here. Violent revolution is all well and good if you can win. Progressives are outnumbered and outgunned in this state.
If there were a lot more of us and we had it in the bag, sure, what the hell, let’s bring change now. But history is written by the victors, and no assassination looks justified when you lose. As it stands right now, progressives would lose a violent fight in Texas.
Right, there are plenty of reactive measures available but the only proactive measures are either restricting availability of the source photos used or restricting use of the deep fake tools used. Everything beyond that is trying to put the genie back in the bottle.
That doesn’t work. It’s nothing but an inconvenience to not talk to your neighbors or those around you. They’d just get even worse and make even worse friends online.
Ostracization doesn’t work. Ever. Period. If they’re bad enough, banishment works. Ostracization is just literally ignoring the problem.
Your friend group is not a sufficient model for all friend groups. They’re a fundamentally different set. All sets are not the same as the other, and taken as a whole it is fundamentally different than any individual group. I’m talking about all groups. Not your group.
I know. I’ve also said that “if the microcosm is so shitty that it doesn’t ostracize people who disseminate nudes, then the people in it deserve to suffer until they improve [or leave.]”
Not everyone is worth hanging around. I know it’s difficult to be alone and most people would rather have shitty ‘friends’ than be alone, but that doesn’t mean they won’t suffer from being around shitty people.
I think the answer is to take the power away from shitbags by avoiding them. The more people who do this, the less influence shitbags have.
Are we seriously going to try and use someone’s photos for dumb shit like this? Cone on, people just want something to wank to or someone to call over to have sex with, who the hell would actually do this?
And that’s the point I was making, nobody can be “protected” from widely available photos being used on widely available programs. Best we can do is deter but that isn’t a guarantee.
Even if you don’t want to consider it CSAM, it is, at the very least, sexual harassment. The kids making and circulating these pictures and videos should be facing consequences. And the fear of consequences does offer some degree of protection at least.
It looks like pretty severe sexual harassment at best. Unfortunately the people I think are most likely to do it are teenagers with poor self control who don’t realize the severity.
I think if schools can implement appropriate restorative responses and education on the harm done that could be much more effective than decaigan punishments after the fact.
If they distribute the drawing, yes. And the difference is that a drawing is immediately recognisable as a drawing, but an AI generated image or video isn’t necessarily easily recognisable as not being real, so the social consequences for the person depicted can be much worse.
Not at all. The current police model was created to capture run away slaves. They’ve always been a method of oppression, you just didn’t hear about it as much before the internet.
Welcome to the club. Used to be happy to see my country’s flag, now it usually denotes some wingnut who would burn it down just to spite others. I’m Canadian
Most of them got richer. So no they did not put off anything.
About $42 trillion in new wealth was created in the first two years of the pandemic. Two-thirds of that has gone to the richest 1% of the world’s people
As the article mainly states, this isn't just because Trump can't help it but also as a strategy to make it easier to get a favorable appeal. Plus, it would stoke his favorite way to portray himself, as a victim, and fundraising:
there have been recent conversations among some of Trump’s 2024 campaign brass of how much of an immediate fundraising boost they would enjoy, if a New York judge were to try to put Trump in a cell for even a minute. “All the cash in the world,” one Trump political adviser says.
It seems like putting a lawyer in jail would just be a recipe for delaying a trial though. They can’t be expected to provide defense if they’re locked up. Or do they just require you to find new counsel?
I think the solution here would be for the judge to go after Trump’s lawyers. From the article they’re engaging in some of this behavior themselves, in addition to encouraging it in Trump. But, they want the optics of Trump getting imprisoned in order to play victim and try to help an appeal. Seems the judge could side step that and go after the lawyers instead, who have more to lose.
Good point. Although it will almost certainly be appealed either way and all these cases will end in the Supreme Court. Increasingly it’s looking like our current system of government will be on the line in the next election and we will either spin into dictatorship or hopefully end Trump’s political career. A more confident voter would want Trump as the Republican candidate as it is likely he will hurt all Republican candidates. I’m not a more confident voter.
The system should not rely on judges with a conflict of interest to recuse themselves. A judge that was appointed by the defendant just shouldnt be allowed to preside over that case. Period.
It’s amazing how much of our government relies on the assumption that government officials will do the right thing. Turns out, it just took one con-man to blatantly just not give a fuck and the whole checks and balances thing fell completely apart.
