I keep track of my girlfriend’s ovulation because she can’t be bothered to do it. I don’t want her to get pregnant either. Just pointing that out.

ChexMax ,

I hear you but it’s far more likely for a woman to track her own period than for a nearby man to track it. You’re the reason this professor felt the need to give this example. Because men assume all progress and intellectual pursuits were obviously sought by men. You guys think it’s the automatic default, and even the suggestion that a woman might have accomplished something is met with, “hey! It could have been a man!”

crapwittyname ,

There’s some faulty reasoning here.
Parent comment challenges the assumption that the marks were made by a female, and you say “you’re the reason the professor felt the need to give this example”, although the example was given in order to challenge assumptions of gender.
OP is actually learning from the example if anything, since they are challenging gender assumptions.
On top of that, your use of “you guys”, and your generalisations about men are evidence of the exact type of biased thinking this example is trying to challenge.

Bro, I’m salaried and only really need to work six hours a day. So that’s exactly what I do. My coworkers put in 12-14 hours a day six days a week… We get the same paycheck.

Granted, I’m consistently rated at the bottom of my department by my supervisors, but I’m also the most highly requested employee by our customers. Literally no one else gets requested by name and I have to triage projects.

HobbitFoot ,

Why do you think there is so much disparity between your bosses and your clients?

Speculater ,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

I show up late and leave early and don’t participate in the “work culture” stuff, this makes my employer upset.

I get requested because I’m the best at my job and the customers talk to each other. I’ve had clients from other employees ask to switch to me but that’s not allowed by policy. The best I can do is look at the work they’re receiving and give feedback.

HobbitFoot ,

Sounds like shitty management.

Speculater ,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

It’s crabs in a bucket and they’re mad I won’t get in the water. I’m paid well and they mostly leave me alone. They’ve only once fucked up my career once by bad-mouthing me to a department I tried to transfer to in order to learn a new skill.

HobbitFoot ,

Crabs in a bucket makes sense for the staff, but not the management. Management should be judging with outputs in mind.

Landless2029 ,

See I’m salary but I’m forced to put in 8 hrs a day. Even if I have no work to do. It sucks.

Speculater ,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

That’s horrible. What’s the point of salary if you have an hourly requirement? That sounds like fake hourly.

Pickle_Jr ,

The point of Salary is so they don’t have to pay for overtime. The slave labor is the purpose, forcing people to work more than 8 is just a nice little cherry on top ☺️.

Speculater ,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

Having a one way street that can only work for them seems like some serious bullshit. I’m glad we don’t track our time where I work. If I had mandatory hours I’d insist on hourly rates.

theangryseal ,

Boom shakalaka. He shoots he scores.

This is the answer. I worked for a company before the law changed where “managers have to work 60 hours a week”. You know why? Because those last 20 hours made them half of what they would have had to pay someone else. Somehow people fell for it though. “It’s a guaranteed paycheck if I git sick. It’ll work out, won’t it?”

Nope.

It ain’t for you boo boo.

MrVilliam ,

I’m consistently rated at the bottom of my department by my supervisors

Unless you miss out on raises or promotions because of this or lose your job, this is meaningless. It’s “this will go on your permanent record” but for adults. This is coming from somebody who is pretty proudly the quiet worker who stays around the middle of the pack and does just enough to keep things slightly better than just maintained, so both coworkers and bosses can objectively see that I’m neither making things worse nor just keeping things coasting. And I got a promotion last year, so I guess it’s the right strategy (here, anyway) lol.

Speculater ,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, they’re only middle management as far as the company is concerned I’m still competitive for corporate level promotions and my “bad” reputation will stay back in my current office. I’m gunning for a promotion next summer, so hopefully these dingbats will be in my rearview mirror next year.

MrVilliam ,

Good luck and Godspeed! Write down every recent and upcoming success so you can cite objective improvements in your interviews/meetings. Customer feedback will help too. If you have any big clients who can vouch for you personally being the reason that your company kept their business, even better. The only risk there is that they may decide that you’re too valuable in your current role, but you can get ahead of that by pitching that you’ll be able to apply your success to bigger wins in a higher role and guide others to learn how to do what you’ve done. Worst case scenario, you don’t get that promotion but you still have it all compiled for interviews elsewhere. If you want to be at the level of that promotion, you should chase it whether it’s within the company or without! You got this!

The part people keep missing with all their “I don’t even eat there so I don’t care” and “fine, I’ll go somewhere else” comments is that every other large chain will be watching this little experiment very, very closely.

People are still going to go to Wendy’s. Any boycott is unlikely to make a dent. If this is profitable, watch this become commonplace. I don’t even live in the states and this concerns me.

Enshitification may well extend itself to the hospitality sector.

CileTheSane ,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

People are still going to go to Wendy’s.

No they won’t. As soon as they are aware the price fluctuates they’ll go somewhere else. Wendy’s competitors will be watching this to see how many more customers they receive during Wendy’s “surge pricing” hours.

Uber “gets away with it” by saying they have a limited number of drivers, and you can always see the price on your phone. Nobody is going to go to a Wendy’s if they don’t know what the prices are going to be.

boogetyboo , (edited )
@boogetyboo@aussie.zone avatar

No one? I’m sorry but I just think that’s unrealistic. People clearly like the food, it’s convenient, likely part of a habit or ritual for many people. If people feel like Wendy’s, that’s where they’ll go.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

This is a game a lot of people are not going to play, just on principle. It’s not about the food, anymore.

octopus_ink ,

It doesn’t need to be “no one” to make it clear the experiment in new forms of corporate greed was a failure.

CileTheSane ,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t know how much profit you think they’re hoping to make from having surge pricing. If they lose 10% of their customers over this that will be a significant loss in overall profit.

octopus_ink ,

The part people keep missing with all their “I don’t even eat there so I don’t care” and “fine, I’ll go somewhere else” comments is that every other large chain will be watching this little experiment very, very closely.

So… locally owned businesses about to get a shot in the arm? That’s already what we’ve done. Why pay fifteen bucks for a burger fries and drink from McD when I can get a bigger burger with better beef (cooked FOR ME), better fries, and the same soda carryout from a local pub for about the same or even a little less? I can also go to the local steak sandwich place and get freshly made cheesesteak with fries and a drink for substantially less. And I’ve got many more options than that.

Biggest difference is 5 or 10 min in my car waiting for food or going in to pick it up. The moment fast food stopped being a consistently cheaper option, that stopped mattering.

They will usher in a new renaissance of local food places. Sounds like a win win.

chiliedogg ,

I absolutely do fast food for the fast part. Between my 2 jobs I’m often moving from 4:30am to past 10:00 during the week, and I simply don’t have the extra 5 minutes to go inside.

I’m actually really enjoying that C-stores are getting better hot food options these days because they’re also super fast, and some of them have shockingly good tacos these days.

octopus_ink ,

Fair enough but I think many people (such as my family) are going to refuse to buy McD’s or Wendy’s while it remains true that we can get better food for the same or less, giving up nothing more than waiting in the drive thru line.

Yeah, I agree there are some good convenience stores too - I think there the line becomes a little blurrier vs local business because sometimes the quality can be pretty close and the prices fairly competitive depending on what you are getting.

When it comes to the Federal minimum wage, they are equally bad, as is the point of the comic.

TrickDacy ,

Really? Are democrats opposed to changing that, or just not prioritizing it because it can get complicated and there are a million other concerns?

Asafum ,

It’s the first part. The vast majority of Democrats are “moderate” and “corporate captured.”

It’s not a “both sides are equally bad in all respects.” It’s “both sides will not give us a change of law to enable a living wage be the standard.” It’s only speaking to that one aspect.

It might also be a complicated topic, but you don’t solve a complicated topic by never starting on it.

go_go_gadget , (edited )

Are democrats opposed to changing that, or just not prioritizing it because it can get complicated and there are a million other concerns?

Are those “concerns” bigger than the concern of Trump winning the general election? Make a choice. Raising the federal minimum wage in order to avoid losing to Trump sounds like a bargain to me.

go_go_gadget ,

Then spend some of that energy telling moderates to start compromising with leftists and progressives if they don’t want to lose to fascists a second time.

III ,

Sadly, while we would value your support for stopping multiple genocides by voting against Trump, your numbers are far outweighed by that of moderates. I am sorry you can’t comprehend very basic cause and effect and if that costs us our country, I guess you can rest well being so stupid you won’t think you were part of the problem.

go_go_gadget ,

Well which is it? If our numbers are insignificant then we can’t be part of the problem because we have no effect. Pick a lane.
