What am I missing about your point?

Looks like income dropped following 2020 and hasn’t returned yet… am I miss reading?

ChexMax ,

Kids! I thought when I was a kid I wanted them no matter what. In my early twenties I decided I only wanted kids if I could find the right partner. Now I have one. Sometimes my partner is great, sometimes he sucks. I don’t care, because my kid is great. She’s a joy to be around and gives my life purpose in a way I didn’t realize was possible. My whole purpose is just to enjoy reading her a story in that moment. My whole purpose is to feed her when she’s hungry. My whole purpose is to look into her eyes. My whole purpose is just to enjoy the moment I’m in, and she accidentally causes me to be fully present so often. It’s amazing.

That said, I would say if you’re not 80% sure you want kids, don’t. Figure out what would get you to 80% first. Financial stability, a good partner, a solid career field, etc.

ChexMax ,

Did anybody else read tangerine as a kid? I still think about it pretty often and I’m 30.

ChexMax ,

Yep, assigned reading in Florida

ChexMax ,

You’re fighting for semantics, but the other guy is right here. Organic labeled food and “organic food” can be used interchangeably

ChexMax ,

How much is a convection oven? Because my air fryer was $35 and it’s amazing. What’s the scam here? It’s much smaller and available for very cheap. Unless convention ovens are way cheaper than I think? Looks like even the cheap “countertop” ones are a couple hundred bucks. The real ones are 15 hundred easy.

And their children made to drink from public water supply**

Missing mother found dead inside 16-foot-long python after it swallowed her whole in Indonesia (www.cbsnews.com)

A woman has been found dead inside the belly of a snake after it swallowed her whole in central Indonesia, a local official said Saturday, marking at least the fifth person to be devoured by a python in the country since 2017....

ChexMax ,

If this were written for Americans it’d have the length of the snake in feet. Bowling lanes is such an absurd length comparison because you’re not allowed to walk on them, so you don’t really know how long they are anyway.

ChexMax ,

Obviously brushing a horse is an unusual and fun experience, but that guy is right that they’re the same amount of exploration. Kids want to play pretend at a restaurant. It’s fun. Didn’t your school do an “enterprise village” type field trip where you all play act grown up jobs for a day? It’s fun!

This is not exploration. The children are not providing anything of value period, except perhaps good will towards the brand in the future.

Is there any significance to people using emojis that match their skin tone?

I’m asking because as a light-skinned male, I always use the standard Simpsons yellow. I don’t really see other light-skinned people using an emoji that matches their skin tone, but often do see people of color use them. Maybe white people don’t naturally realize a need to be explicit with emoji skin-tone or perhaps it’s...

ChexMax ,

I use the one with my hair color. For things like thumbs up I stick with yellow

ChexMax ,

Do you only work 3 days a week or are you subtracting your hour long fault commutes?

OP spend over one full day a week commuting. Gag worthy

ChexMax ,

I mean there are plenty of reasons. Some seasons it rains everyday here. Get off your high bike.

ChexMax ,

Sometimes the thing that sets a dog off is just that they’re older and confused. Dogs do sometimes just snap with no warnings, same as humans.

ChexMax ,

I grew up in an almost 3000 sq foot home with only 5 kids. I know you were using hyperbole with the ten kids thing, but it was cramped with 7. Always sharing bedrooms, never actually getting your own space, no playing music without bothering someone, hard to do homework when your sister is practicing her oboe. If you want a dining room table that fits everyone and a living room where your family can stretch out for a movie, you need the space. (Also I grew up in Florida so no basement or attic. Not sure how those figure into sq footage)

ChexMax ,

I think you mean much cheaper than what WE pay for them to stay at his hotel. That’s tax payers’ money. Fuck that guy.

ChexMax ,

I’m guessing fast lefters don’t even click on posts about Trump at all. It’s like he’s not relevant to them ( especially the ones delusional enough to suggest not voting for Biden, it’s like they’ve totally forgotten that means we end up with trump)

ChexMax ,

My brother’s last three serious relationships all have hadthe same name. It’s not his fault that name was popular 3 years after he was born. The girls are nothing alike.

That said it’s a struggle not to call the current one New “Sarah”

ChexMax ,

Do you actually not know where the generalization comes from, or do you just not like it?

ChexMax ,

My ex (though really his mom i guess) taught me you can just run a half empty dishwasher. I grew up without a lot of money, so we weren’t running the dishwasher until it was full (big family, so pretty often). But when you’re one or two people, it never fills up so I was just hand washing dishes, hating my life. They ran the dishwasher every night no matter how full or empty it was. At 9pm, the dishwasher started. It’s stupid to say it changed my life, but now I just run it whenever I want. I also run my washing machine all the time and folding half loads is so much better, I no longer hate laundry.

ChexMax ,

Some dogs get older and I assume confused and just snap. My grandmother’s dog, sweetest girl, golden retriever, service dog, previously good with other animals and cats. My Grandmom brought home a kitten and the dog mauled it. Do not trust dogs. Just like people they can do something totally out of character.

ChexMax ,

I don’t think it’s a problem that it’s 2 bars in each package, but it should say 5 packages rather than 10 bars. The company knows what they’re doing.

ChexMax ,

My sister was unable receive a full set of vaccinations due to a bad allergic reaction, which makes my parents even more pro vaccines because she relies on herd immunity

ChexMax ,

I cannot understand why anyone would use an app with Ads when connect has none and it’s free! After getting used to no ads, pure content, I would hate to go back.

I used to use boost for Reddit, but I’m securely in the connect camp now.

ChexMax ,

I want to throw up. Rent at the shittiest, drug user filled, mushroom growing out of your shower ceiling, tiny bathroom, kitchen almost non existent, 1 bedroom, view of the apartment across the “courtyard” in my city is more than 10k a year (and that was several years ago). USA

ChexMax ,

Article behind a paywall

ChexMax ,

Good service is anything outside what you just said. Did you need to ask for any changes/ substitutions? Did you have an allergy they had to accommodate? Are you on a rush and they brought it out quickly for you? Are you splitting the bill? Are there children in your party? Did anyone leave a mess or did a drink spill? Were they extra helpful with recommendations? All these merit a tip. If they do exactly as you said and you were an easy customer, no tip needed (assuming you’re in a country where tipping isn’t customary)

ChexMax ,

I’m not saying those things are morally worse or something, I’m just responding to OPs question about what merits a tip. I’m just outlining the etiquette.

If you have above average service needs, that’s when a tip is appropriate. It’s not your fault you have an allergy, but it creates more work, so a tip is appropriate.

Also it’s very common for waiters to tip out kitchen staff

ChexMax ,

Yeah, I think sometimes people hear stop looking for a bf/gf and hear stop meeting people. The trick is to focus on bettering yourself and/or being happy outside of a relationship and your natural boost in confidence and value will likely get you out of your relationship slump. If you’re actively pursuing friendships with no stakes beyond genuine enjoyment, I think it does up your chances.

Also people hear stop looking for a relationship, and hear stop dating. I think it can mean just stop looking for the one. Stop looking for someone who completes you. Take your foot off the gas, be open to a shorter relationship or fling. You might be surprised what you find in a relationship when there’s no pressure for it to work. My sister and I both found our husbands in relationships we thought were definitely going to only be short term.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I’m sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I’m sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I’m sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it’s been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one...

ChexMax ,

I’m on the Google Pixel and it lets me remove words from being suggested, and only takes me a few times tapping out a word to add it to my suggestions. I use swipe and it’s only gotten better and better for me.

ChexMax ,

I’m not sure I understand. If you want a word removed from being suggested / corrected to, you type the word, and then click the word, and immediately above the keyboard there are 3 suggested words. You can press and hold the word to get it removed from being suggested in the future/ defaulted to with swype

ChexMax ,

I’m guessing you’ve never been on TikTok. It’s a pretty good news source and information disseminator. Your algorithm feeds you what you pick so if you linger on posts from physical therapists and psychologists about child development, that’s what you learn about. If you linger on political posts highlighting our local and federal government’s corruption, you get that.

I’m all for banning it (and all social media) for children, but if you think TikTok is all trash TV, you’ve been successfully propagandized.

ChexMax ,

I came to say the Incredibles as well! Heartwarming, funny, quotable, great music, good for kids and adults. A real masterpiece

ChexMax ,

Our lists are very similar! I also enjoy “stuff the British stole” and “cautionary tales with Jim Hartford”

ChexMax ,

Also by respect do you mean let you think your opinion without trying to convince you otherwise or do you mean allow your opinion to affect me without complaint

ChexMax ,

If it seems like an unexamined opinion or an opinion based on faulty logic, yes.

However I will often respect opinions if the person owns up to the non logic of it, even if the opinion affects me. Ie: “we should paint the living room this color because it’s better than the other choice” I need to know your reasoning and your plan for decorating. “I don’t know why, but I just feel in my gut this is the right color for me” I’m in, no further discussion needed. Same goes for vacation spots, daily activities, even bigger decisions like what car to get or what neighborhood to live in. I respect that you understand this opinion is based on nothing tangible and I will respect that.

I can’t support or respect when my partner or friend feels strongly about something but their opinion is based on crap logic or no information whatsoever but they won’t own up to that for some reason.

ChexMax ,

I think I understand the sentiment here, but you are assuming no matter how bad it is, the state a person is living in is inherently better than death. I think you’d find a lot of people can imagine a life worse than death. Death means everything is over, blank, no more consciousness. That sounds better than unhappy life to me, and it definitely sounds better than miserable life.

ChexMax ,

I mean sometimes it has /some/ effect. I’m in my late 20s, so was a kid somewhat recently. We grew up without television. We had movies, and we had the Internet, but no TV. My dad didn’t want us mindlessly wasting time on stuff we weren’t even interested in just because it was what was “on right now.” Not to mention the accumulative hours of watching ads.

We all ended up more creative and artistic than our peers, and my relationships with my siblings are stronger than those of my friends. We read a lot (though people I knew with TV also often read a lot so I don’t think that’s necessarily a given, though I know I myself would not have been regularly reading a book a day in middle school if TV had been an option)

I’m just saying limiting time wasted on media is often net positive.

Because only women are worried about becoming step-parents? (This prolly could've been an Ask Lemmy.) (lemmy.world)

I’m looking for some good reading on how to, eventually, best help be a step parent to my partner’s children and NEARLY ALL books are geared toward the woman’s perspective as though men don’t want to be a strong teacher and develop these kids into healthy adults. Ugh!...

ChexMax ,

Yes! I got pregnant and the online advice for me was a million pages long of avoid this, do that, research everything, do 20 hours a day worth of stuff, but get enough sleep! Don’t stress or it will hurt the baby!

The online advice for him literally introduced empathy as if it were a concept he had never heard of before. The bar is below the floor. We just had him research as if he was going to be a mom.

ChexMax ,

Or the third option which is to cancel Netflix even short term. I wasn’t password sharing, but when Netflix cracked down, we cancelled. We use the other services. I’m voting with my dollars.

The increasing distrust many Americans have in modern medical advances is probably mostly due to our failing Healthcare system.

It’s easy not to trust a system associated with charging you $500 for Tylenol. Much easier (and occasionally even safer) to just smell some lavender and hope that helps. Go to an ED and you could just die of a stroke or heart attack in the waiting room or even get run over by somebody who died of a heart attack while driving...

ChexMax ,

It’s tough when doctors have been liars too, like those who are hired to push a certain narrative by corporations, or those who participated in unethical studies, or basically all doctors to women saying all our problems are emotional and in our heads while ignoring objective medical facts/symptoms.

When I see how differently men and women are treated in medicine, it’s hard to trust doctors to be objective. They’re just not.

I’m doing my best to be a good little Democrat and look down on those who don’t trust doctors but geeze, experiencing a pregnancy and then giving birth in America makes it real hard to give doctors the benefit of the doubt.

ChexMax ,

This is a thoughtless take. Do you know how hard it is to do things randomly? It takes way more work than doing things for a reason. Just because you don’t know the reason, you assume it’s arbitrary? That kind of thinking is why simple rules and instructions don’t get followed mucking up entire systems.

From another comment on this thread:

“I think it goes back to Fannie Farmer in 1896, who wrote the first major and comprehensive cookbook in English that used any kind of standard measurements. European cookbooks mostly used vague instructions without any standardized weights or numbers before that. At this point in the industrialized world standardized cup measures were relatively cheap and available. Scales were relatively bulky, expensive, and inaccurate in 1896. So the whole tradition got started, and most of the major cookbooks owed something to Fannie Farmer. Cookbooks that used standardized weights probably got started in other countries much later, when scales were becoming commonplace.”

ChexMax ,

Idk. I think a big point of the app is to discuss growing up female. Nothing against trans women, and I Believe trans women are women, but as a cis woman, I think I’d have more in common talking about my past with a trans male than with a trans female. We’d have similar stories of being treated a certain way growing up.

How does the day-to-day work of not wearing shoes in the house?

I have been reading a lot lately about not wearing outside shoes in the house and it interests me even more because I’ve been saving to re-carpet my whole house. It hits me every now and then about how to do things though, like, say I’m cooking all day on Sunday then need to take the trash out. I’m assuming it’s change...

ChexMax ,

Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of no shoes inside? The point is to keep anything that touches dirt outside your house. Aren’t you tracking in dirt if you go outside barefoot?

ChexMax ,

Stress can exacerbate almost every medical condition. The boat doesn’t perform normally when it’s under stress. It can affect pregnancy like crazy which affects every single person in the world. Every single person comes from a pregnancy. Stress can affect sleep which also negatively affects like every condition.

‘IRL Fakes:’ Where People Pay for AI-Generated Porn of Normal People (www.404media.co)

A Telegram user who advertises their services on Twitter will create an AI-generated pornographic image of anyone in the world for as little as $10 if users send them pictures of that person. Like many other Telegram communities and users producing nonconsensual AI-generated sexual images, this user creates fake nude images of...

ChexMax ,

Those are easily disproven. There’s no way you think that’s the same thing. If you can pull up the source photo and it’s a clear match/copy for the fake it’s easy to disprove. AI can alter the angle, position, and expression on your face in a believable manor making it a lot harder to link the photo to source material

Teacher who resigned after her OnlyFans page was discovered says new employer fired her for violating social media policy (www.kbtx.com)

Had to supplement her $42,000 per year teacher salary with OF and made nearly $1 million in six months (almost 50 times as her salary) before the school caught wind of it and forced her to resign. Got a new job out of education and was fired five days later when they discovered news articles about her....

ChexMax ,

She’s saying not having to be somewhere everyday that she’s proud of and where she helps children grow which brings her great meaning and purpose has been hard on her. Use your thinking cap.

ChexMax ,

I hear you but it’s far more likely for a woman to track her own period than for a nearby man to track it. You’re the reason this professor felt the need to give this example. Because men assume all progress and intellectual pursuits were obviously sought by men. You guys think it’s the automatic default, and even the suggestion that a woman might have accomplished something is met with, “hey! It could have been a man!”

ChexMax ,

I’m saying you don’t need to make marks on a bone to track the lunar cycle… you just look up.
