I promise it’s not a thing, mate

wildcardology ,

thorbot ,

Yeah nobody actually gives a shit about that except zoomers and news stations pretending like it’s a thing

sleep_deprived ,

Even as an (older) zoomer in the US, this was never a thing for me. No one cared what phone you used. If you had an Android you wouldn’t be in iMessage group chats but no one judged you for it.

ziixe ,
@ziixe@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Well considering here in Czechia (the country that’s 90% “middle of fucking nowhere”) it’s scary that a third of active phones are iPhones, how does anyone except the people living in big cities afford this shit? People around me are getting iPhones, but it’s always like 4-5 year old 11s and 12s, literally the shittiest investment you can do

Also can’t wait in a couple of years when this number will probably go up and iMessage will take over any other messaging app

corbin ,

I mean, even those old iPhones have better software support than a lot of low-end/budget Android phones. The iPhone 11 still has iOS 17 and will probably get security patches for another year or two (assuming it gets dropped with iOS 18, maybe Apple will try pushing it another year).

ziixe ,
@ziixe@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I got a phone that’s 2/3s of the price, started on android 13, got 14 recently, yeah it’s the same but the advantage of it being newer means I have a bigger battery, 90hz display, and more that you just don’t get with a 4-5 year old phone

takeda ,

Yes, that’s my point. Why? Why make it extra more complicated and more expensive for no good benefit?

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

For no good benefit? Try comparing the display to a HoloLens 2. There's no current display technology that's cheaper and allows you to see through while projecting the light at the same intensity. You can search it up.

tkk13909 ,

I think they’re asking why eyes need to be projected on the outside.

saltesc ,

Or anything for that matter.

All I’d want is “Go away. Gaming.” But a Post-It would do just fine. Hell, I’d prefer googly eyes than my own projected, that’d be way cooler and more useful.

tkk13909 ,

I accomplished everything I need by taping a piece of paper with sharpie eyes on my Quest 2 and it cost me $0 to do so!

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

I'll point to someone down this thread about eye contact in that case. It's not like it costed much though, reviewers have noted that iSight's display quality is quite horrible and it seems like all this features added was a small screen

bandwidthcrisis ,

Heavier, too. It’s about as heavy as the competitors despite having a separate battery.

It’s not necessary to have the external screen.

The Quest has passthrough cameras to allow you to see the world with stuff displayed over it too, but Apple has decided that simulating eye contact is important.

It’s Apple’s unique selling point here, but they’d have what sounds like a high-quality headset without it.

LarmyOfLone ,

To allow eye contact for social interactions. If you want ubiquitous AR in real life that is what you need. This is an attempt to achieve this with current technology and it “almost” works / near miss / fails spectacularly.

JohnDClay ,

What do you mean? They added the outside screen to a vr headset to try to make it more acceptable to wear around others.

MNByChoice ,

And the eyes are not the wearer’s eyes. They are just digital eyes.

MossyFeathers ,

Because there are screens in the way? The choice was to either not have the viewer’s eyes be visible, or use a screen to display eyes (not even real eyes, you can supposedly have cat eyes for an example). Considering the device is meant to be AR (augmented reality) and not VR, it kinda makes sense to show the user’s eyes since they’re still “connected” to the outside world. Otherwise you’d have a bunch of blank visors walking around and then people can’t tell if you’re looking at them or your furry waifu.

ColdFenix ,
@ColdFenix@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

And it sucked, fov of the augmented area was tiny, the projected images were see-through and you still couldn’t really see the persons eyes because of the tinted glass. Vr headsets with cameras are currently by far the best way to do AR.

Jakeroxs ,

qisope ,
@qisope@lemmy.world avatar

You actually remove your eyes before inserting the optical couplers into your sockets. You put your eyes in the storage compartment on the front giving the appearance that you’re looking out through the device.

SPRUNT ,

So they can sell you custom eyes like cats and aliens and shit.

SkyezOpen ,

Meme or actually?

tkk13909 ,

Actually

xxd ,

I think this is kind of a temporary workaround. In Apples ideal world, the Vision Pro would actually be transparent and you could see the users eyes for real, but the tech isn’t ready to project what apple is doing on glasses. So they settled for a VR headset and put eyes on the outside. Eventually in however many years it takes, they will actually use glasses and won’t have to do the screen on the outside. They must believe, that being able to see Vision Pro users eyes is integral to the product, or at least important to the product being accepted by everyone.

ExLisper ,

Imagine you’re sitting in restaurant waiting for the waiter while doing some work on your Vision Pro. The waiter shows up and says ‘sir…’. You look at him and… there were two options:

  • it’s just a black screen so it’s not clear if you’re actually looking at him. Are you paying attention? Of are you still ‘inside’ and can’t hear/see anyone
  • you have this fake eyes indicating that you’re actually looking at him

It’s a really stupid “solution” to a huge problem all VR/AR has The actual solution? Don’t buy it.

name_NULL111653 ,

blackn1ght ,

I’m in my mid-50s. The generation older than me - my aunts and uncles - generally were in school until grade 8 and were out of the house and working by 16. My mother had her older sister as her teacher.

24 is not a child. You can vote drive, drive, drink, marry sign legal documents etc. And at least for women fertility begins to decline at 32. If you mean you will continue to grow as a person and develop new interests that hopefully never goes away. I went to grad school and was in academia for over a decade after my PhD. I have made two major shifts in my career since then. Old people still feel like they are in their twenties or early thirties mentally, we joke about it all the time. So congratulations, this is it.

NocturnalMorning ,

That’s a little bit of a yikes there, buddy.

Edit: and additional “yikes” for all of the people that don’t see the problem with assigning a value to women based on how fertile they may or may not be.

Edit 2: tHe QuAnTiTy Of EgGs! Because women only exist to get pregnant.

anewbeginning ,

How can a fact be yikes? It’s only relevant if women want children, but if they do then the earlier the safer it is.

gibmiser ,

Why is that a yikes? More birth defects, complications, start running low on eggs. All of that is just facts…

JJROKCZ ,

They said nothing about the value of a woman being tied to fertility, that came out of mind…

As for the decline in fertility statement, that has been scientifically proven for decades and assumed for centuries. Women are born with a set amount of eggs, they typically go through at least one per ovulation cycle, they start reaching the end in their 30s and risks of birth defects start increasing in their 30s

TheSanSabaSongbird ,

I believe you are the one who is confused and making unwarranted assumptions here.

anonymous69 ,

So biological facts are now cringe?

DrBob ,

The question was about marriage. There are two reasons that I see people get married. For young people it’s about starting a family. However you and I feel about it personally, legal structures that are in place just make it easier when you’re married. The other reason is for older people. Pensions and estate planning is easier for married couples. Again, I have opinions about it but it remains a plain fact.

naught ,

I got married to share healthcare and other tax advantages and do not plan to have children. I’m under 30 ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also, even if they didn’t need to specifically be cubes, he still left part of the object behind.

Does it not matter how much he brings to the end?

Is the requirement for success here solely his speed?

Why not ditch the cube altogether?

Or is it a sum of both speed and “cube mass”?

If so, how much can he shave off and still compensate by being fast?

Could you just cut a small piece of it and sprint to the end?

Is there a minimum amount you need to bring?

So many questions…

cordlesslamp ,

Even if what he did was legit, then cutting the cube into a cylinder would be a smarter choice. Maybe not even a full cylinder, an octagon or something like that would have roll fine and saved so much work.

The real solution is to cut a square cube than the square needed by the end of travel, cut the large cube into a sphere and then transport it then cut the sphere into the cube with the right size.
