Learning what fire actually is, like what the flames are literally made of, blew my freaking mind years ago.

Fire is literally just gas (and fine solid particulates suspended therein) that contains so much thermal energy that its black body radiosity has reached into the visual spectrum.

There are some types of flames that are NOT bright enough to be visible under ambient lighting conditions and can only be seen in environments that are very dark!

Pure ethanol, for instance, combusts dark enough that you can’t see the flames in daylight conditions, or even under strong artificial lighting.

Methanol fires in racing are scary. No flame, no smoke, just burning you.

AnonStoleMyPants ,

I had an RC car as a kid with a small combustion engine that used methanol. When I and my friend realised that methanol burns without a flame we got so excited. It brought a new dimension to our army men shenanigans. That and discovering home made napalm.

Instigate ,

Oh man, the homemade napalm comment really hits home for me. How did you use to make it? My friend always said that it was by melting polystyrene foam in petrol (no heat needed, it simply melts on contact).

Apologies for the rant

We really need a thrid tag. (And NSFL to be a supported tag/filter feature like nsfw)

It should have been;

  • NSFW = anything you wouldn’t wan’t your boss/coworker/stranger in public to see.
  • NSFM = not safe for minors; in other words, porn.
  • NSFL = gore, death, etc.

Theres no way anyone will agree to change nsfw now, so we’ll have to go for something else. I propose;

  • NSFP = not safe for public. This is for things like “sexy pics”, dark, potty, or sex humor (pretty much all of C&H), and that “ball vasectamy switch” post from eailer. It’s a funny post, but personally I don’t want a detailed 3D rendering of balls showing up while scrolling in public.

Edits to include link to the ball post I referenced, and an example community that I belive would fall under my NSFP tag (Cyanide abd Happiness). lemm.ee/c/cyanideandhappinessPlus general spelling and grammar fixes as I find them.

criitz ,

Im good with NSF work and minors being the same, since they basically have the same limitations, but I agree with adding NSFL

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I’d prefer it that way as well (less to try and catagoize and no is it W or P gray zone to figure out), but I think nsfw has become so ubiquitous with porn that not many use it for other stuff. You either have to restablish the nsfw rules (and moderate) or create a new tag to fill in the gap.

unwarlikeExtortion ,

Playing devil’s advocate here: maybe they were trying to be inclusive by not specifiying gender but haven’t heard of they. The US education system is a joke in a lot of places so the (hypothetical) teacher may have to think twice before suggesting they change the it’s to their. But hey, at least the apostrophe is where it should be and I’d take that as a win for education.

+1 for Anna’s Archive. It’s an amazing resource for students too, since they keep research papers and textbooks.

And before someone gets up in arms about the research papers, the researchers don’t get paid by the journals for publishing with them. In fact, the researchers need to pay the journal to publish, and then the journal turns around and charges people to read it.

If you ever need to get research for free, you can usually email the researchers directly and they’ll be happy to share it for free; They hate the journals too, (because like I said earlier, they have to pay the journal thousands of dollars,) but feel obligated to use them to publish.

Even worse, that research and journal publishing was often funded by public funds and research grants. So the journal is paywalling research that taxpayers already paid for, and should be free to access.

MeetInPotatoes ,

And before someone gets up in arms about the research papers, the researchers don’t get paid by the journals for publishing with them. In fact, the researchers need to pay the journal to publish, and then the journal turns around and charges people to read it.

What you’re describing here is called predatory publishing and is not the norm. It’s the “fake news” of scientific journals. I’m not “up in arms” about the original topic of making info available to the public whatsoever, just wanted to correct this part.

uis ,

What you’re describing here is called predatory publishing and is not the norm.

No, predatory publishing “is an exploitative academic publishing business model that involves charging publication fees to authors while only superficially checking articles for quality and legitimacy” without real peer review. For context reviewers aren’t paid by high impact journals either.

I wouldn’t be so sure, I asked bing:

Based on the whimsical nature of the objects described in the image, it’s a bit challenging to determine the shortest lifespan as they are not typical living organisms. However, if we consider the objects metaphorically, the burger-shaped car might represent a food item, which typically has a shorter lifespan due to its perishable nature. In contrast, vehicles and cameras usually have longer lifespans as they are non-perishable goods. So, in the context of the CAPTCHA, you might consider selecting the burger-shaped car as the object with the shortest lifespan. Remember, CAPTCHAs can be subjective, and the correct answer may vary depending on the specific logic programmed into the test.

Pretty much this. Google’s captchas some years ago were all about pointing out road related things, like semaphores, other cars, buses, etc, because self driving AI was just around the corner.

hCaptcha, the one in this image, is literally using us to train/refine art prompts. I’ve had a number that asked me to choose the pictures that showed a “whatever”, with the 9 images for clicking being obviously AI genned. Sometimes, it accepts 2 rights and 1 wrong.

Honestly, I’m not against ads, I understand that a site with free articles needs to pay the bills somehow. The reason I use ad block is that online ads have become so intrusive that it makes websites unusable, and the way they track you is way over the line. If ads didn’t completely destroy the experience of reading a website and were reasonable in the data they collected I probably wouldn’t bother with ad block.

black0ut ,
@black0ut@pawb.social avatar

Afaik, they are unblockable. They are served from the same domain as the video, so if you block them you can’t see the video either.

Instead of blocking it at the domain level, you can install adblockers on almost any platform. I recommend uBlock for Firefox and ReVanced for Android. ReVanced is also supposed to work on Android TVs, iirc.
