We have to call their bluff from time to time and remind the management that without us, none of their shit works. When we down tools its not like they can pick them up and get the show back on the road.

Taohumor ,

Kinda sad this is what it comes down to that they can’t be reasoned with like humans. I’d be looking for a new place to work.

Asafum ,

“I can grab any piece of shit off the street and replace you in 20 seconds.” Is what most of them think when it comes to meat machine labor like myself. :(

Soggy ,

Individually? Maybe. That’s why worker solidarity is important. Let the bastard replace the whole team while you’re out front protesting shit pay and long hours.

Anticorp ,

That works for menial labor in a down job market or a city without much opportunity. It doesn’t work for most career oriented positions, or in a strong job market. It costs a company considerably more to replace someone than to compensate them better.

Riven ,
@Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m with you brother. I actually enjoy my job and my bosses are decent, they never micromanage or get in my way. Ill still take ‘sick’ mental health days off every 2 months or so just so they’re reminded how much of a pain in the ass it is without me here. I also take all my vacation time but it’s usually in one go for extended vacations. Gotta make sure they’re reminded every couple months though.

repungnant_canary ,

I presume you’re from the US but at first I was surprised you can even not take all vacation days. Cause in my country it is actually illegal to not use all vacation days and the employer pays a fine for that. Which leads to a bunch of people having days or even weeks free in February/March as they’re using their vacation days (the law necessitates them to be used by Q1 or so of following year).

Riven ,
@Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yea from the US. I phrased it that way because I can actually bank vacation days and use them next year, up until a certain cap at least. Actually used it to take a long vacation in japan last year.

Survivor bias

themeatbridge ,

That’s a really good point. We never hear about thr civilization that tried to build a structure with the small stones on the bottom and crushed everyone to death when it collapsed.

GoosLife ,

You know, if they did build it like that, and the blocks fell straight down, it would arrange itself into a pyramid shape, so who knows. Maybe they all did that and we just assume they built pyramids on purpose.

beebarfbadger ,

This further proves that the Big Bottom conspiracy is covering up the facts they don’t want you to know!

OneWomanCreamTeam ,

Damn, I’m a bottom why did no one let me in on the conspiracy?

lennivelkant ,

Well, there is one famous story about a tower so tall it toppled. Whether fiction, embellished or actually true - by virtue of its age it proves that the concept wasn’t entirely foreign.

Henry Ford’s right hand man had uneven steps in his home as a defense mechanism. he fell down them and died while drunk (apparently this is urban legend)

Catsrules ,

I think they do that in castles steps as well. To slow down invading.

wischi ,

I think they did that in castles, because it’s generally pretty hard to build castles. If the enemy is inside the walls you are practically done anyway.

BlemboTheThird ,

I enjoy the idea that some shitass mason hated whatever king hired him, built all the stairs as quickly and poorly as possible, and then to save his ass later had to be all “oh hmm yes the stairs? That’s a feature actually” and somehow it winds up catching on

wischi ,

Sounds like an urban legend. Who do you mean anyway? James Couzens? Harry Bennett? Charles Sorensen? His son Edsel? They all died of natural causes.

pelletbucket ,

every time the story comes back up it takes me ages to figure out who I was talking about again. I can never remember the name, but he was featured in an episode of last podcast on the left

Jiggle_Physics ,

You are talking about Henry Bennett. This is a myth though. While he did have stairs like that, he died in a care home after years of declining health. His actual cause of death wasn’t announced, but it was likely because he had been in rapid decline for years and just before going into the care home, had a stroke.

Unless you have a cat that likes to play with them… Then the other direction.

Rhaedas ,

Depends on the cat. If they're simply going with tapping the roll to spin it, that may work for a bit. I've found that rolls accessible to a cat tend to morph into big balls of clawed unusable pulp.

alquicksilver ,
@alquicksilver@lemmy.world avatar

When I was a young kid, I had a cat that was front-declawed (this was before it was well known that it’s an abusive practice - my folks didn’t know better at the time). Because he couldn’t shred the paper with his claws, he showed his spite by chewing up the roll so it looked like he’d clawed it. Didn’t matter which direction the roll was.

I loved that cat. He was so smart.

Rai ,

When my bois were kittens, they would play with it either way. You’re totally correct.

BoxOfFeet ,

Why not just shut the door so the cat doesn’t get in there? The toilet paper being hung correctly is more important than the cat for me.

Rai ,

Yes but also S T E A M

If you live in a humid, much poo carries on.

ArmoredThirteen ,

One of my cats knows how to open doors like a fucking velociraptor. We’ve baby locked several of our doors but some things like the bathroom I don’t like fucking around with extra steps when trying to get into at 3am

zammy95 ,

Oh hey, my fear. Do you have door knobs, or uh - the flat handled kind that swing down or up? I just realized I don’t know what those lever like door handles are called.

I can hear one of my cats pawing at the door knob at night, he’d be getting in places he shouldn’t if we had those flat kind.

ArmoredThirteen ,

The flat/lever kind, can get them open first try from either side of a door it’s impressive. He’s way too smart for his own good and I suspect he could work a round style one if it had enough texture on it. The menace certainly gets into everything else in the house

RBWells ,

Our Kimchi is working so hard on this and I don’t usually think of her as clever. She knows the knob opens the door so she bats at it, hangs on it.

Neither cat has been messing with the toilet paper lately though.

Theme ,

Famously easy, like herding cats

WarmSoda OP , (edited )

If you spend time with them yeah it can be easy. I have two cats. They both listen to me.

You can’t expect them to just automatically know what not to do.

Iapar ,

But people get cats so they don’t have to interact with them.

WarmSoda OP ,

I do not condone animal abuse.

Iapar ,

Good, you shouldn’t.

WarmSoda OP ,

Interact with your cats, people. They’re pack animals. Just like dogs. They just hunt stealthily instead of barking.

iopq ,

The cat listens to me. It understands nothing, though

WarmSoda OP ,

Well, then teach it to understand. Do you think dogs just automatically understand everything too?

Why are all of the people in here getting animals if they don’t want to spend time with them? They’re not magic beasts.
