I have several for work that will likely never work in Linux.

So those have a nice little VM they sit on, which has been stripped bare of the nonsense. Remote desktop access enabled, and I can do what I need whenever.

Ah, admittedly I avoid that problem entirely, I have an MTR, a ZR, etc running on devices here (hardware/software testing stuff), so I don’t need to run meetings on my desktop often.

Edit: Just to note, I’ve done USB passthrough with VMs that were ZR builds and such, so that can be done. But I think if your sharing from there it can get messy (USB video capture and such as your sharing method, so on).

It’s still not that old (~10 years or so iirc), it takes time for a third party to be major contentender. Earlier on you’re more likely to see third party wins in more local than national level elections.

It’s not an insta-win for third parties. But that’s ok, because local elections matter, and that’s where you’d typically see results first.

Maybe it’s just to me, but liberal/national coalition and labor seem like the two major parties, green is barely at the table still.

If you exclude the coalition, national has 4 times the representation of green, and liberal 3 times that.

Just my opinion here, but it’s still two major parties, with the thirds coming up in ranks and getting some momentum going. It’ll be a good day imo when the greens overtake the nationals (and maybe one day the liberals), but I personally don’t see it as representative of the people yet. Improving, but still functionally two parties.

Studio monitors are excellent choices, but expensive. I’ve used genelecs for pretty much every audio workstation I’ve ever done, I’m a huge fan, but you’re also talking $800 and up.

You can sometimes find a good deal on some used studio monitors, which to me is the way to go. A long ways back I decommissioned some genelecs for a studio (surprise surprise, the new studio had newer versions of the same model), and I’ve been using them since at home. Roughly 15 years now.

OP, There are some flavors of Debian out there that are more rapid release, like LMDE, Siduction, Sparky, even Kali (though I wouldn’t recommend Kali as a primary desktop personally). Some based on Sid, some based on Testing.

Like anything else, it’s good to know how to do it in many different ways, it may help you down the line.

In production in an oddball environment, I have a python script to ftp transfer to a black box with only ftp exposed as an option.

Another system rebuilds nightly only if code changes, publishing to a QC location. QC gives it a quick review (we are talking website here, QC is “text looks good and nothing looks weird”), clicks a button to approve, and it gets published the following night.

I’ve had hardware (again, black box system) where I was able to leverage git because it was the only command exposed. Aka, the command they forgot to lock down and are using to update their device. Their intent was to sneakernet a thumb drive over to it for updates, I believe in sneaker longevity and wanted to work around that.

So you should know how to navigate your way around in FTP, it’s a good thing! But I’d also recommend learning about all the other ways as well, it can help in the future.

Way better experience. Also really good for home grown vr in the early 90’s (combined with some LCDs nabbed off camcamcorders and a VGA to s-video (or composite) converter).

For one thing, more FOSS focused. It’s lighter/faster for me than a self hosted gitlab, there is nothing hidden behind a paywall, they are working on some nice activitypub integration, actions are really handy (yes it’s a bit of yaml soup), codeberg is using and supporting it, a better focus on security and stability than gitea (where it forked from), the ux is clean, and that’s about what I can think of off the top of my head.

Creating a bug report or feature request can be done without having to create an account, and the backend tools (including blocking instances) are being completed first.

It’s not like it’s forced either. You can just run it local and have no federation (once the feature is out of course, right now you wouldn’t have it regardless).

An article was linked in other comment threads, there was a clear start and an uncomfortable girl who texted her mom with absolute fear of being raped.

Something a lot more than moving them around may have happened if she didn’t send that text. So yes, no clear attempt at sexually assaulting the girls, but the amount of effort he went to… Doesn’t give me the feeling that this was only about a good night’s rest.

That said, I’d prefer the girls safe over him getting more time in prison any day of the week.

Just to mention a not-foss, but extremely well done DAW, cheap ($60 personal use, $225 commercial) and goes through 2 major versions before you’d need to pay again, free to download and try WinRAR style, supported on windows, macos, and Linux, etc, etc - reaper.

FOSS is always a better option, as of today I don’t think anything compares. And since they aren’t a big company doing shady things, the licensed version is permanent, no big company buyout is going to impact anything other than upgrades.

I get that, there is a list of Linux friendly vsts out there that work well. I think they have a link to the list, but I don’t really use drums in my workflow so couldn’t give you any examples unfortunately. I did have to go into windows for some work stuff where I needed a specific vst though, definitely understand the issue.

If I remember right on that one, users had even paid to have their data removed, too. But it was stored unencrypted. And that settlement included unidentified users which the money was going to be held onto for them to put ads in magazines or something. Wild.

The huge, nearly billion dollar Facebook settlement was something like $50/person. Google’s privacy class action suit was like $10 per person.

And boy oh boy can we be sure they learned their lesson! Facebook and Google haven’t done anything shady with private information since, right?

My servers (tiny/mini/micros) in total are about… 600W or so. Two NASs, about 15-20W a piece.

I spend a out $150/mo in electricity, but my hot water/HVAC/etc are the big power draw. I’d say about $40-50/mo is what I’m spending on powering the servers in my office.

Definitely puts off some heat, but that’s partially because it’s all in one rack, and I’ve got a bunch of other work hardware in there. It’s about 2 degrees warmer in my office than the rest of my home, but I also have air cycling all the time since it’s a single unit HVAC and I need to keep the air moving to keep it all the right temp in the other rooms anyway (AC will come on more often otherwise, even without my rack).

To add to this, virtually all GPUs out there with DP are DP++ and will not require an active adapter.

Consumers will almost never need to consider an active adapter for DP to HDMI, as well as single link DVI. HDMI to DP will always require an active (powered) adapter. As would DP to dual link DVI, VGA, or component.

A pretty typical VA issue.

My dad was drafted, went to Vietnam, and many years later developed ALS - somewhat recently added to the “Always covered for vets” list, as being a veteran in any war doubles the risk of ALS.

The battle to prove it was ALS though was insane, had to be done outside of the VA with specialists (it is still rare, of course, so not many out there can actually give a diagnosis), and took about a year from blatant symptoms to diagnosis, and then another few months of VA paperwork to get coverage and other things he was owed.

Not a new problem unfortunately, and certainly not unique to this situation. Just another kind of symptom of another kind of problem.

He died 4 years back, so no. ALS is usually about 2 years from diagnosis, and he made it a bit past that, but not much.

Once the ridiculous amounts of nonsense paperwork was run through (during which time my dad lost the use of his arm, speech was one of the first things to go), he got plenty of support. But getting there is the nightmare in my opinion. They started out trying to give him like 15% disability - which is insane, ALS is terminal and is always a 100%.

But thanks for the link! It looks like there’s some stuff there that applies to my family in terms of benefits, so going to do some digging.

Thankfully a retired LTC got involved (back when we were first going through all the fun) who did an amazing job helping us navigate the mess that is the VA. Still kept in touch too.
