YaBoyMax , (edited )

It appears to be a rule against posting food made from animal products. As someone who doesn’t eat animal products myself, I don’t particularly enjoy scrolling Reddit or Lemmy and seeing a picture of a meat dish, but it doesn’t ruin my day I would never dream of demanding a content warning for it.

To my knowledge CWs are geared towards content that has the potential to trigger past trauma, and I can’t understand how a food category could be so broadly traumatic to someone (outside of EDs I guess, which is obviously not the focus of this rule).

SgtAStrawberry ,

Unfortunately trigger warnings got watered down very quickly, to now also being used as an “anything someone might find the slightest discomfort in”

threeduck ,
@threeduck@aussie.zone avatar

I suspect it’s less of a trigger warning, and more of a means to reframe perceptions of food.

Like, if TV commercials just started putting little “viewers may find the following depictions of dead animals disturbing” stingers before a commercial of a family eating steaks, it might change perceptions over time.

HardlightCereal ,

Yeah, that’s exactly what it is.

Homelander drinking a consenting woman’s breast milk is disturbing and helps convince viewers he’s a creep. Yet if he were to enjoy a nice glass of refreshing cow breast milk, that would be completely normal. Why? Because our society has made a very deliberate choice not to consider there being anything wrong with milking a cow.

Hexbear simply does not participate in that choice. On Hexbear, there is something disturbing about milking a cow, and that’s because the admins want you to be disturbed by it. That has always been the default state of things.

We are a platform that welcomes anyone who wants to be here in good faith. With that said, we are also an intentionally leftist platform; conservative and reactionary ideologies will not be tolerated here.

They live in an idolgical bubble where contrary opinions are not tolerated, and dissent is shunned. The only voices they hear are leftist and extreme leftist voices shifting the Overton window of politics in their minds leading to radical beliefs.

It’s important to have your beliefs challenged at times, they lack that. If you can try and listen to voices from opposing view points, maybe even share your own in a respectful manner.

thedarkfly , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in How can we see the Milky Way if we are inside of it?

When we look at the sky, there is a line where there is way more stars than usual. This line goes all the way around the sky. This was called the milky way by the Greeks because it was like a road sparkled with milk drops. At some point, we deduced that we were in a group of stars arranged in a flat disk. Later, we realized that some weird space clouds (nebulae) were much further away than we thought and were actually other huge groups of stars like our own that we named galaxies, still after milk.

There are more details me course. Even along the line in the sky drawn by the milky way, there is one side where there is much more stars and dust than the other. We deduced that we were at the edge of the disk and the bright region was the center of our galaxy. Also, the amount of gas and dust that block certain types of light that teach us that our galaxy has arms.

    fede OP ,

Great explanation, I finally get it! thank you

    CrabAndBroom ,

That’s definitely the more PG-13 version of why the ancient Greeks called it the Milky Way lol. Alternate version from Wikipedia:

In Greek mythology, Zeus places his son born by a mortal woman, the infant Heracles, on Hera’s breast while she is asleep so the baby will drink her divine milk and thus become immortal. Hera wakes up while breastfeeding and then realizes she is nursing an unknown baby: she pushes the baby away, some of her milk spills, and it produces the band of light known as the Milky Way.

    MtDewaholic ,

Great explanation, although I want to clarify that not all nebulae are galaxies. Nebulas are massive clouds of dust and gas that are found within galaxies. Other galaxies were previously thought to be nebulas in space outside of the Milky Way, called extragalactic nebulae. However, in the early 1900s it was proven that these were actually other galaxies and not nebulas, so the term is no longer used.

While there are nebulae in other galaxies, they are not easily visible to us, so the word nebula generally refers to those contained within the Milky Way.

I’m just saying this cause I imagine the original comment your replying to has some implicit context of “when possible” or “on my own machine”.

My IT department likes to install antivirus software that makes it impossible to do your job because it will scan every compiled object file, inflating compilation times by an order of magnitude, even for distributed compilation jobs.

Or stupid “workspace management” software that will randomly uninstall work-related software and / or reboot your machine whenever it pleases.

Luckily I can use Linux at work, otherwise I’d have to either quit or tamper with my work machine to do my job.

It can be. Women or queer persons can potentially have a tough time there, too.

    cheese_greater OP ,

Can you elaborate or link me to some corroboration of that—it seemed remarkably progressive and reasonable in my limited experience

    Ashtear ,

So, here’s the thing. There’s a difference between a space allowing people that don’t look or act like the people already in the group and accepting those people. In some places, inclusiveness ends as soon as you get in the front door. Tildes is one of those places.

Now, don’t get wrong, I don’t think most of the people at Tildes are intentionally malicious or anything like that. And any large influx of people like the kind that would have happened with open registration after what went down on Reddit is going to cause mistrust and, sometimes, hostility. That’s just human nature. The difference is Tildes is intentionally protective of its culture.

This came about by both a) restricting the development of niche (or minority) communities, and b) limiting invites so that the small trickle of people who come in are assimilated more easily. That culture–like so many of these types of places–started with mostly white men of privilege from the tech sector. All the good and bad that comes with that is going to propagate in such an environment.

Even if Tildes didn’t originate in a culture that has a reputation for being homogenous and abrasive, this setup would still have lead to a certain type of group-think. Dismissive, and a little bit short on empathy and active listening. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about negative peace, where there wasn’t open hostility, just an absence of tension (as opposed to positive peace, which is the presence of justice). This is not dissimilar.

This comment chain on Tildes is an example someone else shared.

    cheese_greater OP ,

My only argument I wanna make here is nobody knew my race or identity when I even asked for and summarily received an invite to Tildes (almost instantly!)

Unless I’m making some perceptual or logical issue here, I would say that is a stark contrast to the vignette you sorta painted here.

    Ashtear ,

Again, it’s not about who they let in. It’s about how they respond to conversation that doesn’t mesh with their ingrained culture.

The conversation I linked is all about that.

    cheese_greater OP ,

Ya, that post was pretty wishsy-washy and sweeping, people can make their points without needing to resort to identity politics to give credibillity to non-credible or insufficient arguments they want to toss out there. From my experience, I could argue any point from whatever lens you can think of and I believe I could receive votes and recognition. I can even swear because the force of my argument will be sufficient to excuse any nominal crassness that I strategically use to intensify the reasonable claim I ultimately make from the relevant or hypothetical vantage point in question.

    IHaveTwoCows ,

I am slowly looking at other socmed options than the big three. Tildes and maybe Bluesky will be on the list. I liked Mastodon but they muted me so I never visit any more

Stuka , to asklemmy in Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Give me a reasonably priced, accessible way to enjoy the content and I will happily pay for it.

Streaming has become untenable and now it’s neither affordable nor convenient to watch what I want to watch. And with how frequently shows and movies bounce around platforms, who knows if the show I want to watch this weekend will be still available on one if the many platforms I’ve been paying for.

    I’m just done with it.

    dingus ,

I know people like to shit on Spotify. But it’s the reason I stopped pirating music forever ago and the reason I’ve paid for it for years now.

It’s fairly reasonably priced at $10-11/mo. It’s available on basically any phone, computer, tablet, etc. And nearly every song I could ever want to listen to is just there, seamlessly. You can even download the songs to play locally for when you don’t have Internet access. I will admit there are some rare occasions where a song I want is not available there, but it’s so infrequent that it doesn’t at all impact my listening experience. I can also very easily discover new music by generating playlists based on a song I like.

Now look at something like Netflix. It used to be this way…priced well and had everything you could ever want to watch on it. But now everyone and their mother has their own steaming platform. It’s absolutely ridiculous. It’s become as expensive as cable to get the same watching experience as TV streaming sites used to be. Sure there are people who say “well I just periodically subscribe and unsubscribe to the service I want to make it cheaper”. And sure, it makes it cheaper, but it sure as hell isn’t convenient. I don’t want to have to fuck with all that shit. So I use illegal TV/movie streaming sites instead. Or I just watch YouTube videos or use free services like Tubi and Pluto. Paid for TV streaming services absolutely suck ass nowadays.

If we started having issues with artist and production company fragmentation, I would cancel my Spotify subscription. But thankfully that hasn’t happened and I hope it never does. The trend doesn’t seem to be looking that way thank goodness.

If you have a reasonably priced service that has everything I could want, I pay for it. If you don’t, then I pirate. Simple as that.

    Stuka ,

I’m with you. I’ve had a Spotify sub for more than a decade and have no plans to cancel.

    greenskye ,

The biggest issue to me is that all music services offer effectively the same access to music. I’m not choosing between Spotify and YouTube music because my favorite artist is on one, but not the other. However we are conditioned to think this is ok when it comes to video. Streaming services never should have been content creators, we should be choosing Netflix vs Hulu based on price, app quality, video quality.

Also for me it has to be YouTube music, as alot of the songs I listen to aren’t on other platforms, (song covers, and remixes).

Let me tell you the real secret. You know what it costs to rent a movie online? And stream it? And then never watch it again? Yeah now justify that against streaming services.

I’ll tell you right now, go get Plex. If you don’t already use a media server, start. Because chances are that you don’t actually watch 90% of what’s on those services. So that $15 a month for content you don’t own could easily be $20 a month on content that you do actually own. Not to mention there’s no ads involved and you can stream as many devices as you want from anywhere. Get friends to pitch in and it’s even better.

The ONLY argument for this is convenience of all the shows at your fingertips. Except now that’s not the case and they’re on different services, screw it, either pirate the media or buy it used on disc.

Agreed, totally depends on how much you watch. But shopping used DVDs and like I said banding together with friends to buy content eventually begins to work out better for you.

I’m not someone who consumes tv and movie content en masse so it works out for me to do this and for a lot of people who watch a season or two of a show a month, it’s not that much more expensive to own.

What I meant about the capitalism concept is that the core idea isn’t about enjoyment or getting to watch what you want. It’s not about convenience anymore. This is a capitalistic cycle where it stops innovating and starts to poison it’s consumer.

So shows will now be splintered across services, shows will get cancelled for being less profitable, and the overall quality will dip because we’re driving art to the bottom price. Whatever makes shareholders more money. And is this true? I feel like it is. Quality of shows has dipped quite a bit to fit the streaming service pricing.

We can argue about whether people want that or not, but it’s basically just what’s been done with every other consumer item. Dominate the market, lose money, get the subscribers, and then make their experience shittier over time.

    _pete_ ,

This is how I do it.

I pay for Netflix, Prime (only really for the free shipping), Disney+, Apple TV+ and Spotify, if it’s not on any of these then I’m going to pirate it.

The whole exclusivity stuff is just rubbish, I get the reasoning but if you can’t make your content easily accessible then I just don’t want to pay for it.

BlameThePeacock , to nostupidquestions in How many keurigs would I need to daisy chain together to replace a water heater in an average house?

Not as many as you think, a water heater only has 3 times the electrical capacity of a standard wall outlet. So probably less than 6-10 Keurigs, but you’d need them on 4-5 (or more) separate circuits otherwise you’d blow the breakers.

    mojo ,

You say between 6 and 10, the other commenter said 427. I don’t know what to think!

    Ottomateeverything ,

The other one is just comparing volume.

This post is just basing it on heat capacity.

There’s another saying 34 equating it to a tank less heater.

The original question is too vague - there’s no one to one mapping between keurigs and water heaters. If you’re just trying to heat your houses hot water, any of those answers are valid. So is “1”, but it’d be slow and you’d only get a half gallon before refilling it, and at that point the last batch is cold, but it’s still heating water… . It’s just a question of what you REALLY want and what your constraints are.

    RankWeis OP ,

I read once that if you’re trying to get some creativity juices flowing, removing unnecessary details will allow for more abstract thought. Like “write a story about an ogre” would lead to very different stories than “write a story about an ogre doing pushups”, even if the latter is probably arguably more funny.

So that was my thinking here about being a bit vague, I was specifically talking about tankless water heaters which got us on the subject though.

    Ottomateeverything ,

Oh I totally get you, and it leads to more interesting perspectives and discussion for sure. I don’t mean to insult your question by calling it vague - the person was just saying they didn’t know what to believe among multiple answers and who was right, and I was pointing out that a vague question has multiple different answers. Didn’t mean it to come off as insulting your question.

    fmstrat ,

The problem with this answer will always be volume. 6 of them would be one really quick shower.

    RankWeis OP ,

Thank you, I love the internet. Was discussing this with my roommate and didn’t know where else to ask!

    Qwazpoi , (edited )

If we’re looking into their heating capacity they should be able to heat approximately 7 and 1/2 gallons of water an hour. A lower end water heater can supply about 85 gallons of water per hour so you’d need about 11 of them to meet a small house capacity.

If we’re looking at their water holding capacity and power consumption. The average house has a 40-60 gallon water heater and a Keurig has a 48oz reservoir. You would need 107 to get to a 40 gallons capacity. When heating they use 1500 watts according to the Internet, so you’d need 160,500 watts (or 1,345.75 amps) of Keurigs to be the equivalent of a low end water heater for a house. The average 40 gallon heater uses between 4500 and 5500 watts.

I only really watch foss stuff, which should be exciting, but I get tired as it’s always much of the same news:

    • a new private messenger (like we don’t have 500 of those already)
    • a new app/program/distro that does the same thing as 10 other ones
    • a “simple” app/program that doesn’t do much of anything, just like 10 other ones of the same kind, will get 3 updates and then die
    • something for the terminal for terminal nerds that could really use a gui but shutup you dirty normie
    • a library that sounds cool but nobody except maybe some corporation will ever use it
    • announcement of a complete rewrite, which means we’ll never hear of the project again

So I’m not exactly thrilled about anything either, tho for every different reasons

It’s easy to look at source code and see that it’s got complicated. It’s harder to work out when it’s complicated because it needs to do something complicated like model something from the real world that’s complicated, or when it’s complicated because it’s accumulated loads of old crap. If you start experimenting with a rewrite, typically it’ll look like it mostly works before you’ve added most of the necessary complexity, and that can trick people into thinking that it wasn’t actually necessary.

    Azzu ,

Yeah, but what I meant more is that in almost every case, refactoring is the way to go.

Temu, Shein, Alibaba and even Amazon are full of unsafe products not manufactured under sufficient quality standards.

Recently we bought some plates for a party that had gold metallic polka dots on them. I was able to use a plastic fork to scrape off these polka dots. People were eating cake off these plates. The metallic paint was going into people’s mouths.

Also, many of these products are only designed to last for a short time before they break, so we are literally filling landfills with this plastic junk we get sent over to us from China by the shipping container load.

    DogMuffins ,

Sadly my partner finds this junk irresistible.

    eatthecake ,

Why would you buy anything from these places and not expect garbage? What bothers me is people continuing to buy plastic crap then blaming the corporations for environmental issues. Just stop buying shit.

    braxy29 ,

at this point, i’m not sure where to buy most things and not get garbage. every online platform is trying to emulate amazon and become a “marketplace” filled with unvetted cheap shit; stores often have little stock and no one with expertise.

i need a lamp for my office. where do i buy something i can ensure is safe and well made? i have no idea.

i realize this is a small concern relative to the larger failures of capitalism, but free market competition isn’t even successful at providing basic goods and services.

Some of the Chinese stuff is good, particularly if you get a name brand (Aqara, Sengled, Sonoff, etc). I’ve got a bunch of Sengled smart plugs and they all have proper ETL listing. A lot of US-based brands are manufactured In China too. It’s just hard to separate the good from the bad sometimes though :/

    MrFunnyMoustache ,

Absolutely. Louis Rossmann recently made a video repairing a disposable sex toy, and when he took it apart, he realised that the battery wasn’t empty, but it stopped working because the product had zero water resistance design, which means that it is unsafe to use in addition to being a literal subscription service to get these disposable toys when it could have easily been a regular product.

Might be a controversial take, but I’m concerned about people letting themselves shape sweeping, negative views on things that are (keyword: relatively) minor or just don’t fully know the story behind. For example, EA was voted “Worst Company in America” multiple years in a row, when it’s really just a software company whose worst sins would probably amount to gross overworking/general poor treatment of their employees. That’s bad, but I feel like it’s pretty inarguably better than chocolate companies who use child labor to harvest cocoa beans.

It’s especially concerning when it extends to global/political issues (this is why I said this might be controversial). We don’t tend to realize that we share much more in common with people in other countries than we realize, probably helped by the fact that most news sites tend to leave out details or exaggerate bad parts when talking about governments other than their own (a notorious example is the reporting on North Korea . Here’s a good vid about it (CW: very graphic) Not saying it’s a wonderful place to live, just that it’s exaggerated.) Part of the reason political conversations feel so toxic is because so many of us just don’t know a lot of what’s going on or what each other is talking about, so we’re rarely on the same page. Reading a quick Wikipedia summary and/or article can go a long way

One of my favorite examples of people getting things embarrassingly wrong is the “Taiwan is not part of China” crowd. Both sides historically disagree with this. Taiwan being a part of China is not some point that has been in dispute until very recently.

The disagreement has historically been over which is the “rightful government”. Sure sentiments in Taiwan have been changing but even this year there was a former Taiwanese president saying this explicitly

I totally agree people should research news stories these days. It is easy to make money from sensationalism. However, in this light:

For example, EA was voted “Worst Company in America” multiple years in a row, when it’s really just a software company whose worst sins would probably amount to gross overworking/general poor treatment of their employees.

How about loot boxes and how it was designed to attract the gullible to throw cash at the company. Those gullible people stole money from parents in some cases and bankrupted them in the process. So no, this is not some minor discretion. EA was recognised within the gaming community as being the most egregious when it came to loot boxes, but they are certainly not a solo entity in this type of venture.

I agree this is still not as bad as the tragedy that chocolate companies have adopted to make money. They don’t just use child labour though, there is plenty evidence of children being abducted into slavery also.

As for NK being not a wonderful place to live. This is not true as it is a great place to live for some. Even George Orwell recognised that by stating “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”.
