It was my college experience. Didn’t use anything else. No issues at all

Still Rocket League. Can’t shake it for some quick challenges in ~10 minute increments. I really wish I could either switch over to some SCUMMVM retro stuff, or a semi-casual fantasy adventure, but in ~10 minute doses.

I’ve considered Witcher 3, but it looks too time-intensive for a busy dad. I’m hoping for something that might need a few hours to get started, but then you can pick up & make actual progress in under 15 minutes.

Anyone have recommendations?

muhyb ,

Maybe some CRPGs? Like Shadowrun Returns. Missions will be longer than 10 minutes but you can save it any time once it’s your turn.

eezeebee ,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

I would actually say Witcher 3 is good for that. There’s like 100 smaller quests you can do in 5-10 minutes each. Some of the main storyline quests (which are marked as such) might take 20 or 30 minutes when you’re ready for them. It also has imo one of the best quest tracking systems I’ve seen, as well as best inventory system (sorting, yay) so you don’t have to remember everything after time away from playing.

Dark Souls games can also be played that way - from one bonfire (checkpoint) to the next is usually around 5 to 10 minutes depending on how you play.

dubyakay ,

Ever considered rogue-lites?

  • Hades
  • Crypt of the Necrodancer
  • FTL
  • Slay the Spire
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • Dome Keeper
  • Into the Breach
  • Runestone Keeper
  • Spelunky
  • Rogue Legacy

etc.

People also need to keep seeding torrents. That’s how we can keep stuff alive

LazerDickMcCheese ,

Everybody should look into hardlinks and cross-seeding. By today’s standards, it’s painless and very unlikely to ever take up your bandwith

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted ,
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

and very unlikely to ever take up your bandwith

Are you sure about that? Not all of us have fiber, you know. For instance, I have like 175 Mbps down, but only like either 2 or 10 Mbps up. (I can’t remember which. Lol.)

LazerDickMcCheese , (edited )

In my case, I’m always seeding hundreds of torrents…yet my upload rarely goes above 1 or maaaybe 2 Mbps. Could just be luck, but you can always throttle the speeds if you need to

cyberpunk007 ,

Torrent clients also have bandwidth limiters built in. So if a user has 5Mbps upload, change it to 1 or 2 on the setting and off you go.

WarmApplePieShrek ,

both of them are much too slow to seed usefully

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted , (edited )
@EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Exactly, which is why I

  1. Use a VPN server specifically configured for P2P,
  2. Use port forwarding on said server,
  3. Only have three torrents active at a time so as not to divide my bandwidth too much, and
  4. Typically seed for weeks at a time so as to give the ratio time to build at such low speeds. (I typically try to seed up to 10.0x, but you know, with old seeds, that’s not always possible to do even with weeks of seeding. :) )

Seeding in this way may not be very effective, but it makes it at least feasible.

@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

Most of the time it was not an issue. Occasionally a teacher gave us a office document that loaded a bit funky, but it never blocked me from doing my assignments.

Deliverables were PDFs, so it really doesn’t matter what you use.

I do remember having to learn some ghostscript command so that I could edit PDFs and stitch together a bunch of PDFs into one file. It was annoyingly difficult to edit PDFs back then, but I figured it out.

clark OP ,
@clark@midwest.social avatar

Forgive the stupid question but I just want to be sure. If I write a document in LibreOffice and use a bunch of fonts and fancy stuff, then send it as a PDF to a MOffice user, they will be able to see all the fonts and such?

delirious_owl , (edited )
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

No question is stupid.

If the font is included in the PDF file, yes. This is how PDF is designed to work. The whole point is that PDFs should look identical on all platforms

clark OP ,
@clark@midwest.social avatar

Super! I won’t have any issue submitting assignments then. Only trouble of course would be live collaboration, but I can always use MOffice web-version for that.

Prefer to spend your time outdoors? I’m not sure about other states and countries, but in CA your library card can get you free entry to state parks!

www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=30806

GiveMemes ,

You have to pay for State Parks in Cali? That’s absurd

meanmon13 ,

state parks often do, they are usually on the honor system and require you to put money in an envelope and put it in a drop box

GiveMemes ,

Yeah around here we pay for it if we were gonna like rent a cabin or something at the state park but it’s literally a govt service so it’s free to just like go there and hang out… very surprised to hear that isn’t the case everywhere.

Mouselemming ,

Not if you have a library card! But the fees go to help keep them clean and well maintained, which they need more when they’re used more. Of course they also get funding directly from taxes.

bobo ,

Not if you have a library card!

Unfortunately, this is only true for a (substantial) subset of state parks. I wish they were all participating, but they’re not.

KLISHDFSDF ,
@KLISHDFSDF@lemmy.ml avatar

Why do you think its absurd?

SomeAmateur ,

Places like parks and libraries are places where you can expect to go without the expectation of paying money. If I visit as a person from out of town I shouldn’t have to go get a library card to get into a park for free in my opinion.

SomeAmateur ,

The more I learn about Cali’s laws and taxes the less I want to live there, which sucks because the landscape can be so beautiful

brbposting ,

Pls keep learning 😛

Ya room for improvement. Absurdly amazing when everything’s good (you have money near the coast but not near wildfires)

Mouselemming ,

One use of the taxes is to preserve the beauty and make it available to everyone except where it’s too fragile.

A lot of the regulations exist to mitigate the evils caused by massive concentrations of humans, like air pollution.

But hey, you go ahead and stay where you are. That’ll keep a place open for another of the many people who move away, experience life in those other states, and then come home again.

SomeAmateur ,

Don’t get me wrong even if I wouldn’t go there long term Cali is still on the visit list, it’s just a matter of time and opportunity

corsicanguppy ,

It’s weird how you want the beauty, but don’t seem to understand how it stays that way.

It’s maintenance. It’s user fees to fund maintenance.

You may think that’s socialist, but really it’s not. Proper socialism would be a portion of income tax being allocated toward funding a maintained park without added user fees for residents.

It’s usually cheaper overall for people using the park, but people who don’t use the park complain about their taxes being used to foot the bill; the same as they complain about paying for fire protection service they don’t use.

SomeAmateur , (edited )

Libraries don’t charge me, that’s the beauty of it. I can exist there with or without a library card. Drink water, use the bathroom, read all day etc. The taxes pay for the maintenance and resources.

Can’t taxes pay for state park maintenance behind the scenes the same way rather than charging at the door? I get they want money from visitors using the park but there’s things like fuel taxes and hotel taxes and campground fees that could pay into that too. I don’t know what the actual fee for entry would be but still I think that having a fee to exist in nature feels kind of dystopian to me idk.

It’s funny when people are asked what animal they want to be if they had a choice and they go for some alpha predator in the jungle or ocean. I always say I choose to be a house cat. It’s even better than a dog, because as a cat you can just mind your own business and not even show affection to your owners and they’ll love you for it.

667 , to amateur_radio in Random question for today: Considering people who are not amateurs, if you wanted to create increased visibility and participation in amateur radio, what would you do?
@667@lemmy.radio avatar

One of the challenges I’ve long experienced with any of my hobbies is they are often niche and beyond the interest of most of the people I talk with; Amateur Radio even moreso. Nearly none of the people I interact with in daily life “get it”. They have their phones and Internet and don’t recognize the continuous marvels which constitute Amateur Radio.

I think all the -OTAs (POTA, SOTA, etc) have done a wonderful job of increasing visibility of our hobby, but to really supercharge it, every radio operator should also be willing to hang a sign which encourages passersby to come ask questions and engage. I was up at a fairly popular community park with a 200’ (~61m) span OCFD and not a single person approached. I reckon they’re unwilling because of how “official” a setup looks and don’t want to risk crossing into an area they’re “not supposed to be in”.

There’s not enough popular media which portrays the utility of Amateur Operators, which is probably an extension of the general unfamiliarity of the hobby by authors. Think of what percentage of any of the movies you’ve seen in the last 20 years and one can probably count on one hand the accurate portrayal of amateur radio communications.

These are just my initial thoughts having woken up not too long ago. I’d really be excited to hear others’ opinions.

craigify ,

“every radio operator should also be willing to hang a sign which encourages passersby to come ask questions and engage”

I thought about this EXACTLY! We travel a good bit in our bus conversion. I’m working on building some semi permanent radio equipment in here. Often we find ourselves in parks and other natural areas, which I plan on setting up antennas for fun.

I was thinking that I should put up a little sign that says come talk about radios!
