The best purchase I’ve made this year has to be the tickets for the “Barbie” movie on opening day July 21st. As I watched the movie in theater (the best way to watch a movie), I was literally moved to tears by the performance of the lead actress, whom I might add, deserves an Oscar this year.

Fellow lemmings, I, for one, will definitely be buying “Barbie” on Blu-ray to have it in my collection.

girltwink , to nostupidquestions in Is jogging on sidewalks harder on joints than if one jogged on dirt?

All the people saying “yes” are incorrect. Running on pavement and running on trails exert different strains on the body, but not less. The tendency in road runners is to end up with tibial stress fractions, and in trail runners it is metatarsal stress fractures, but the injury rates are similar. Trail running requires stronger stabilizer muscles (primarily gluteus medius) to maintain knee health in the long term, but this is a problem for both as well.

Use good shoes, strength train your gluteus medius and calves, do most of your miles at an easy pace, and you’ll be running for decades, regardless of your chosen surface. You might even change it up and do both!

(My credentials are that i am an ultramarathoner and have run half a dozen races between 26.2 and 50 miles, on pavement and trail, and i have been coached by a professional ultra runner for several seasons.)

Pantherina , to asklemmy in What's some sex ed info you didn't know until embarrasingly late?

The hymen is not normally ripping at the “first time”, but these myths come from brutal men that have no compassion and dont know how to make both people horny.

Hacksaw ,

Breaking a hymen when you first have sex is indeed a myth, but so is the idea that sufficient arousal will prevent tearing every hymen.

Hymens come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and elasticities. They can tear from many things but most people with hymens are quite likely to experience minor tearing or bleeding the first time they have sex. That’s especially true if the hymen is particularly large or thick and if you haven’t torn it before the first time you had sex.

That’s the last myth, even if breaking a hymen was a real thing required for sex, it doesn’t say anything about virginity because many girls tear it in childhood and puberty from a variety of activities as innocuous as swimming.

flo.health/…/what-is-hymen-and-how-it-changes

confluence ,

It’s my understanding that some of them even heal and can be torn again

Hacksaw ,

That’s true to some extent. Any stretching will return to nominal state in fairly short order, and tears certainly heal. However it never goes back to it’s “pretorn” state, and I wouldn’t think anyone would want it to, a lot of hymens don’t allow significant penetration of foreign objects (or body parts) in their original states. The article I linked has more details on that in a few different sections.

ImplyingImplications , to nostupidquestions in Why does the inner ear imbalance make you throw up?

There’s a part of your brain called the chemoreceptor trigger zone which triggers the vomiting reaction. Dizziness is one of the things which can activate this zone. It’s thought that since dizziness is a common side effect of poisons, we’ve evolved to vomit whenever we’re dizzy.

Prandom_returns OP ,

Makes sense, thank you!

Tedesche ,

I was going to respond to the OP, but I only knew how an inner ear imbalance causes dizziness, not how said dizziness triggers the vomiting reflex. Thanks!

For those who want to know, there’s fluid in your inner ear and receptors that can detect where the fluid is, as well as where it ends (it’s surface). Your brain uses this system like a level to determine your head’s orientation to the ground, and if something fucks with the fluid in a way the brain can’t make sense of, you feel dizzy (the sensation of not knowing your orientation to the ground).

otter , (edited )

That might bring up a follow-up question

why is dizziness a common side effect of poisons

My guess was that some poisons affect the nerves related to balance, or decrease blood supply to the brain? I don’t have anything more specific though

NeoNachtwaechter ,

some poisons affect the nerves

Many poisons (for example, alcohol) affect the nerves directly, i.e. the transport of the electric there. The first impact is that the brain (and the spinal cord of course) does not receive the sensoric info properly anymore. And then the body does not follow the brain’s commands anymore.

otter ,

So once the signals get mixed up, the dizziness sets in?

NeoNachtwaechter ,

Sort of. I would even say, the perception of broken (toned down or very delayed) signals is the dizzyness.

I love this so much!

Adderbox76 , to fediverse in I know that recent drama has caused a bit of uneasiness in the community for this platforms future, but I am optimistic for lemmy. It might be helpful to look to mastodon to learn how to move forward.

Why uneasiness? This is federation working exactly how it’s supposed to. People are free to spout whatever garbage they want, and no one else is obligated to listen to them if they don’t want to.

No one is infringing on hexbears so-called “free speech”. They’re still free to shout into their megaphone. But the rest of us can close the damn door on them if we don’t want to listen. That’s quite literally the best of both worlds.

The only people that are “uneasy” are the people who think that “free speech” means being able to force people to have to listen to their bullshit. It’s not. Never has been. Never will be.

I for one love how federation tends to sort itself out without stripping away anyone’s right to free expression. Hexbear, or whatever instance happens to be controversial at the moment, can still say whatever they want. No one is shutting them down. No one is censoring them. No one is stepping on their rights. The rest of us just have the power to not have to listen to them. It’s a great system working exactly as designed and it’s absolutely how the future of social media has to be.

sloppy_diffuser ,

Aye, the right to free speech does not mean the right to an audience.

deweydecibel ,

The rest of us just have the power to not have to listen to them

You’re describing this like we all, individually, are blocking Hexbear users. That isn’t what happened. They were defederated by a handful of individuals. They were censored. An authority blocking your words from reaching others is censorship.

Now, I agree with the defederation, don’t get me wrong, but you’re missing the forest for the trees, here. This is an obvious case where defederation makes perfect sense, because the instance’s admin was not controlling and banning users or stopping them from brigading other intances. That whole instance was an almost explicit raiding ship pulling up to the rest of Lemmy. Defederation makes sense.

But that doesn’t mean it is always going to play out this way. There are countless ways for defederation to be used as a weapon by admins, and just like we saw with the piracy change, communities can be vanished without defederation. Basiclly, there are so many tools available to admins of every instance to create invisible walls through the fediverse for any reason they like, and users will not be able to get around all of them, and more importantly, they may not even know about them. They may not be aware of what they’re not seeing. That creates a lot of avenues for manipulation and censorship, in both direct and indirect ways. That’s absolutely concerning, especially when there isn’t some unified standard admins have commited to.

Like, if this is the fediverse working as intended, then people need to stop advocating for this place as a reddit alternative, because it will never be. Reddit would never have gotten to be what it is if subreddit moderators could manipulate the visibility of others subreddits.

Adderbox76 ,

You’re describing this like we all, individually, are blocking Hexbear users. That isn’t what happened. They were defederated by a handful of individuals. They were censored. An authority blocking your words from reaching others is censorship.

No it most certainly is not. Not by any legal definition of the word. Preventing people from speaking is censorship. that’s all. “forcing people to listen to you” isn’t free speech. And I’m not even going to bother going into the fact that free speech is quite LITERALLY in regards to government’s and have absolutely nothing to do with private servers like Lemmy instances.

As someone has already mentioned, the right to free speech is NOT the right to an audience. Just because you don’t agree with that statement doesn’t make it not true. Facts don’t give a shit about your opinion.

deweydecibel ,

I never said anything about rights. I’m not suggesting anyone should be forced to host anything. I don’t care what each instance opts to block, they’re within their rights too. And I don’t care what the legal definitions are, restricting the visibility of certain things is censoring them. But “censor” is not a dirty word. Blocking childporn is censorship, and I’d say that’s pretty good. I can already feel an argument about semantics coming and I genuinely don’t care. Whatever you want to call it, just fill it in there.

My point is that without some central authority or doctorine to which all admins adhere to, these tools will be absused for far less dramatic shit as Hexbear, and it will break the fediverse apart at best, or at worst, be used to shape it in dishonest ways. I support Lemmy because I hoped it would be an alternative for reddit, but it can’t be as long as this fracturing and curating is allowed to break the shared reality of the platform.

Hackerman_uwu ,

They were not censored, they are undoubtedly still active and able to say what they want. We just can’t hear it. You can choose to hear it by joining a instant federated with them.

Dafuq are you on about censorship?

deweydecibel ,

Just becuase you can see something if you change perspective doesn’t make it not censorship if you attempt to block it from view. I’m not getting into a semantics argument; the point is really simple: those with the ability to frame the appearance of Lemmy to visitors using that ability to hide things from certain POVs. Regardless of what Hexbear was, that ability, unchecked, is going to harm the federation’s ability to grow naturally.

Hackerman_uwu ,

That is what federation is and that is the natural growth of a federation.

If not for exclusion and inclusion it would not be a federation.

It’s puzzling that you think this is semantics.

Anyway, this isn’t a productive exchange and I choose not to continue it, hope you don’t think I’m censoring you.

ImmortanStalin ,

Hexbear has been the best thing to happen to the Lemmyverse.

LucasWaffyWaf OP , to asklemmy in People who were fired on their first day at work/saw somebody get fired their first day at work: What happened that led to the firing?

Starting this off myself, there was one fella at my current job who bought vodka at a liquor store during his lunch break, poured heaps of it into his soda from a fast food joint, and wound up getting fired when they noticed him getting drunk as hell.

That was before I started working here, but coincidentally I met him at my other job!

C4d ,

Mine is similar. Arrived, day one in a new team; this one was more high-intensity than the usual - a fast-paced and very hands-on work environment. Noticed the team leader was working in a dysfunctional and unsafe manner; seemed unsteady. As the most junior member and a newbie at that I hesitated to confront directly; thankfully I managed to find a more experienced colleague. Scene was made safe; turned out the guy was drunk as a skunk. Canned within the hour.

I’ve since learned to be stronger and more willing to confront suboptimal or dangerous performance in team members, regardless of their seniority.

That was pretty scary.

FredericChopin_ ,

Bro. I worked for a call centre way back and in training some dude did the same thing sans the soda.

Just downed a 1/2 bottle and went back to training. Suffice to say he was pretty drunk (admittedly an alcoholic, and I sympathise) and started being a bit louder. He was promptly fired.

ParsnipWitch ,

That is kinda cool but sad also. I knew someone like that as well. Worked for a company were the best quality control person for boards was a functioning alcoholic. And I mean like her hands started shaking around 9 o’clock. She would drink all day long from tiny schnaps bottles hiding in her office or from her flask.

These boards were mostly for prototypes or small series, so always something new to look out for. Tiny parts mounted by hand. She would catch any error or faulty joint. But couldn’t talk straight. I never understood how that’s possible. I guess these people are better focused when drunk/high. Or just ultra pros at their jobs…

jsveiga , to asklemmy in What is an extremely dangerous thing that we use daily?

Two way roads.

If they didn’t exist today and someone came up with the brilliant idea of having people in control of machines (cars or bikes) moving in opposite directions at 50mph, separated by a few feet and a painted line, it would be dismissed immediately.

Robertej92 ,

I drive on a lot of rural roads in the UK, mainly Wales, most of the time I’m just happy when the road has space for two cars to squeeze through and some visibility for what’s coming around the corner of that rural lane. Actual physical lines separating the lanes? Oh boy it’s my birthday. Yet with all that, we have a death rate per 100 million miles of just over a third of somewhere like the US, so I’d imagine the size of cars and inadequate licence requirements are probably bigger issues for road safety

Schlemmy ,

I can’t remember which episode it was but in the Cautionary Tales podcast by Tim Harford a guest once explained that cars are too safe. Through the years we blamed cars for not being safe when people get hurt but few alterations were made to our behaviour if you campagne it to the advances they’ve made in car safety. If imminent death would follow everytime we made a mistake people would be more careful. That’s how I feel about the roads in Wales. The lack of oversight made me be more cautious. That and the fact that I normally drive at the other side of the road.

lotanis ,

The general concept you’re describing is called Risk Compensation. It feels intuitively correct, but in whatever context it’s been studied in almost all cases it turns out that the safety feature is actually better overall. Some people might be a bit riskier knowing about the safety net, but not enough to counteract the safety improvement.

Also - in the UK - road deaths go down over time, while miles driven goes up. Driving is getting safer. Cars are part of that, but so is road nd signal design and driver training.

Piers ,

It’s so much safer to have an accident in a modern car than one from even just a few decades ago. There’s no amount of better-than-what-we-have levels of driver awareness that can make up that gap.

alsimoneau ,

Actually a positive correlation has been found between the amount of roadway lighting and car accidents. More streetlights cause more crashes.

Robertej92 ,

I drive a little Skoda so I’m very cautious on those little roads, don’t have the same feeling of safety as the great big SUVs that barrel along

Eufalconimorph ,

Rural Scotland has a lot of single-track roads. One lane for two directions, 50mph speed limit, with pull-offs every few hundred feet so cars can stop and let others pass. FUN™.

Jordan_U ,

Ok, this is a weird hypothetical, but if the world had been overcast for the last thousand years, and then suddenly there was sometimes just a completely blinding light in the sky that you sometimes have to drive straight toward, it would be chaos.

Before COVID I imagined that the death toll would be so high that most roads would be shut down until technology had been developed and distributed so that you could never be blinded by the sun while driving. (Not just a flip down sun visor, but something like an LCD screen front windshield with head tracking that automatically blocks just the sun from your view).

Now I know how quickly and easily people become acquainted with mass death.

Now I imagine there wouldn’t even be a new driver’s test required that requires you to demonstrate that you can safely drive into the sunset.

Just “We recommend, but don’t require, that you have a sun visor in your car when using public roads.”

huginn ,

FOSS doesn’t pay a mortgage.

The rabid “it should be free” crowd here acts like we live in a post scarcity utopia where everything is roses and they deserve whatever they like on demand. The majority of users on this site wouldn’t give a penny to help save their instance from dying.

Reality is that FOSS is basically never given donations (donate to your instance hosts people) and relying on donations is a guarantee that you’ll run a charity at a loss.

Software development is hard work that only a small group of people know how to do (for now: I still hope it’s like 50% of the population in the future but…) And to make independent software full time is a risky endeavor.

You’d have to be off your fucking gord to make FOSS software full time and expect to stay above the poverty line.

My mom was a foster parent for troubled kids. She did it for 20 years. Over 100 kids ended either being able to return home, or found perm adoption. However, in the end, one kid broke her, and she nearly didn’t come back from it. This kid had a horrible life, abused, physically and sexually for over 10 years by his father and mother both. He got arrested when he tried to touch a 6 year old at his school. When they took him into custody, they put him in a juvi unit with kids 5+ years older then him. He spent 2 years there before he was placed with my mom. He would punch, bite, kick, spit, scratch. Break things, scream, yell, shout, and anything else he could do to try and get a reaction. She lasted just over a year, but when he punched my 3 month old niece, my mom had to physically get between him and my brother who probably would have killed him, no exaggeration. She called and had him picked up by the foster care center she worked for. He screamed at her that like everyone else in his life, she abandoned him. They took him away and she quit the next day. A few years after my mother passed away, I saw on the news that he was killed in a gang related conflict. I’m glad she didn’t have to deal with that knowledge. It took a long time for us to convince her that she wasn’t the one who failed that kid, life just dealt them a shitty hand and they didn’t play the cards they had been dealt right.
