PagingDoctorLove ,

I email everything to myself like an old lady, and pay Google for extra storage. 🤫

PagingDoctorLove ,

Hey! My husband is thinking about doing something similar with his, can you share any resources you used? He’s done programming before but never with a raspberry pi, and he’s not sure where to start.

PagingDoctorLove ,

Very helpful! We are already looking into a VPN, just undecided which one to go with, so I’ll send this comment to him. Thank you!

PagingDoctorLove ,

Thanks for the heads up! That’s definitely something we hadn’t considered. We’ll start looking into it!

Try baking it like granola. Mix it with a little honey and maybe more dried fruit if you like that, spread a thin layer on an oiled baking sheet, and bake slow and low until it’s crisp. Should improve the texture and make it a better contrast with the yogurt.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I guess “very low” is subjective. When my oven is on I’m usually broiling, so I’m probably not the best at estimating.

PagingDoctorLove ,

Yes, and apparently just bought a house right by the university and a major bike path, and has been seen out at bars in the area. What a fucking predator.

PagingDoctorLove ,

Yeah, I don’t get it either. Even if she’s got a serious mental health condition, the odds of her not understanding that everyone in that car was likely to die are slim to none. Being unbalanced enough to be willing to end your own life, but not so unbalanced that you’ve already been committed or ostracized by your loved ones, is just so hard for me to comprehend.

PagingDoctorLove ,

She alternated between giving them insulin, injecting air into their bloodstream, and overfeeding them. The babies that recovered most likely did so either because they weren’t in bad shape to begin with, or because they coded while a competent doctor or nurse was on call and able to stabilize them, or because of luck. One of the babies she attempted to kill survived, but has severe cerebral palsy and requires a feeding tube. There’s no definitive way to say that the nurse’s attempts on her life caused her condition, as she was already a preemie and at risk for multiple complications, but I’d say the lack of durability definitely led to at least some lasting damage for some of the babies that recovered.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I’m not a doctor so this is me just trying to piece together info from other sources, but it sounds like overfeeding can cause a lot of issues that premature babies aren’t developed enough to deal with on their own, like severe gas and bloating. Depending on how delicate the baby is, this might lead to a cascade of problems that are difficult to diagnose, treat, and recover from. With babies that underdeveloped, even something as benign as eating too much can become deadly.

But again, not a doctor, and a quick Google search turned up a bunch of complicated articles that don’t really clarify. I just know that it was one of her strategies for worsening the babies’ condition.

PagingDoctorLove ,

Thank you for the clarification, but my God, how awful. Those babies must have been in so much pain and distress before they died.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I didn’t even know there WAS a new booster. God, will we ever escape this mess?

A soft drink cabal dedicated to making sure we can still put poison in consumables.

The world just keeps getting weirder.

PagingDoctorLove ,

Elon Musk is just another gross white man who wants a manic pixie dream girl, minus the dreams. It’s no surprise that he doesn’t see a problem with this. He’s a textbook predator, and the whole situation with Grimes made that abundantly clear.

I hope his next venture is selling guided tours in unregulated deep sea subs.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I was just a kid at the time but still remember the media making a huge villain out of Sinead. They made it seem like she was mentally unstable, but she was just years ahead of everyone else. I’m sad that she didn’t get to see this outpouring of support and appreciation while she was alive. She died far too young, and I hope it wasn’t by suicide. I hope she wasn’t in pain.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I love the Strange Planet cartoons, but just FYI the author, Nathan Pyle, is unapologetically pro-life, publicly engages in some really harmful rhetoric surrounding women’s reproductive rights, and refuses to listen to scientifically irrefutable facts regarding abortion, just because he and his wife are Christian. He says they vote Democrat anyways because they’re “troubled by what the republican party has become.” But somehow I really really doubt that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they supported the dismantling of Roe v. Wade under the guise of freedom of religious beliefs. The odds of them believing in the separation of church and state while simultaneously attending events like the March for Life are slim to none.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I love these comics, but Nathan Pyle is very publicly pro-life. I think people need to be careful about how they support him. I love when his comics are reposted, but I would be wary of forming a community dedicated to someone who views women as second class citizens who do not have bodily autonomy or a right to reproductive healthcare.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I have to respect the fact that he doesn’t think I deserve bodily autonomy? I disagree. People can and do have harmful beliefs. They are harmful because they shape the way that person views and interacts with others, within the confines of a social structure. If he wants to go off grid and not benefit from any social services, I’ll help him pack the moving truck myself. But he’s not going to, which means he’s benefiting from rights, laws, and services that are meant to protect everyone, even people who he doesn’t think deserve them.

Pro-life individuals are so insidious, they managed to have a basic human right rescinded in more than half the country.

Was he solely responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade? Of course not. Did he directly impose his opinion on anyone else? Maybe, maybe not. We only have his word to go on, and I’m sorry but that’s not worth shit.

My point is, he’s not just sitting there twiddling his thumbs either, he’s using his platform to publicly support big institutions (March for Life) that work diligently behind the scenes to oppress women.

Like I said, I enjoy the comics. They’re cute and funny and I don’t get the vibe that he’s using them to be preacy about abortion. But he is 100% a shitty person with offensive, harmful beliefs and no, I do NOT have to respect that.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I’m not sure I’d assign any intrinsic value to the comics, though I do enjoy them. But yes, there are many artists whose work I still enjoy despite knowing they’re a shitty person.

I just don’t think it’s a great idea to then give these artists tacit support by creating a Reddit/Tumblr/Lemmy community solely for them.

I made the first comment after seeing someone else in this thread refer people to a community for this artist. He doesn’t need the ego boost. Let him fade into obscurity along with every other misogynist who hides behind religion (as if that weren’t, in and of itself, an immediate “tell.”) Let his name pop up in the occasional comment section only for people to go “who?”

I don’t even know if he’s still making these comics, but he definitely still has an online presence that he has previously used to advocate for the removal of women’s rights. Let that be his legacy. Start a community devoted to figuring out how a sentient festering anal polyp could ever possibly create something so cute and innocent.

The comics will live on without him.

I second the Brother recommendation! We’ve had our printer for almost a decade, and it’s still going strong. I worked from home during the pandemic and we only had to buy ink twice. Iirc the black is like $25 and the color set is like $40. Sometimes it tries to not let you print if one of the colors runs out. But when that happens we just take out the cartridge and use sharpie to cover the transparent ink reservoir. The computer thinks it’s full, so you can literally print until they all run dry.

I believe some of their models use a printing method similar to xerox machines that’s even cheaper than ink, long term.

The only downside I’ve had is that the phone app is finicky and sometimes glitchy. For example, if I want to attach a document to an email I have to open the Brother app first, scan the document, share it to my email, save the draft it generates, exit the app, and then open my email back up and load the draft. I can’t attach straight from Gmail. However, I think this might just be a phone compatibility issue. I have terrible luck with phones. But either way, it’s still better than having to boot up the computer every time you need to print.

Eventually I’d like to find a model that can print from usb or be hardwired in addition to being wifi, so I don’t have to rely on the app or my phone. But there’s just no reason to upgrade yet, our printer still works great!

How do I contact my instance admin?

I went ahead and logged out and back in on my own, but I was not prompted to do so by Lemmy and I don’t know enough about this stuff to say whether or not doing it on my own would’ve helped. I’m still pretty overwhelmed trying to figure this site out, so I apologize if this is a dumb question, just want to make sure I’m doing what I can to protect my own privacy.

I don’t want to fall for the millennial version of a Nigerian prince scam, lol.

PagingDoctorLove ,

I only have a .world, so I’m not sure. I’d be interested to hear from others!

PagingDoctorLove ,

Hey, me too!

I miss when things were either plug 'n play, or complicated enough that you needed like an IT spirit guide and lots of free time to get anything figured out.

PagingDoctorLove ,

There were T-shirts?

PagingDoctorLove ,

I’m not worried about upvotes or downvotes being seen by anyone, but I am very worried about other personal info being seen by any admins. I have a very real, very scary stalker, and if all they had to do was create an instance to see my private information…

To be clear, I know that’s not what’s currently happening, but it feels like a bit of a slippery slope when pretty much anyone can become an admin and things aren’t super secure yet.

I’m kind of regretting giving my email to sign up, now. I just don’t know enough about this stuff to know whether or not that’s a valid concern.

PagingDoctorLove ,

Thank you, that’s very reassuring! I was able to go in after the fact and delete my email from my account, though I’m not sure how much good that will do. I’m definitely going to look into those, the Firefox relay in particular sounds pretty user friendly. I don’t know when I lost my tech savvy, but it’s getting harder and harder to keep up with things these days.

Speaking of which, does Lemmy remind anyone else of irc? The organized chaos has been giving me deja vu and I think I just realized why…

PagingDoctorLove ,

Well put! I’m still very confused about “instances,” and the way people talk about them makes it seem like you need to sign up for each one? But that can’t be right, that would be way too confusing! Right? Lol.

Lemmy.world also seems like the best place to ask questions. Everyone I’ve encountered has been very helpful, and I see a lot of people talking about how positive the community is. So I’m trying to just sit back and enjoy the ride!

PagingDoctorLove ,

Yes! I have the same exact question.
