When a magazine goes out of print and/or out of business, do the original 'master files' for each issue still exist somewhere?

Thinking about the gaming magazines I used to read as a kid in the ‘90s. Some of them have found their way online thanks to preservationist efforts, but most are seemingly gone forever. (I’m talking about the particular magazine I read as a kid, many others have complete or near-complete collections available online in the...

I was denied a mathematics education, for real. I can’t even do long division, nevermind that squiggly F shit. I thought that stuff was only for astrophysicists.

I want to learn basic maths, but I’m in a ‘learned helplessness’ mindset where I can’t even get through basic sums and equations intended for children (I’m old as fuck now).

I was diagnosed with autism a few years back, which kinda made no sense. I would have expected rainman powers, but numbers just don’t jive with my cunt of a brain. Maths is as inscrutable to me as people’s faces or social cues.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back (www.windowscentral.com)

It’s a nightmare scenario for Microsoft. The headlining feature of its new Copilot+ PC initiative, which is supposed to drive millions of PC sales over the next couple of years, is under significant fire for being what many say is a major breach of privacy and security on Windows. That feature in question is Windows Recall, a...

That’s amazing, thank you! A ghostly remnant of gravity still exerting 8-ish minutes of influence on earth (in the event of the sun’s instantaneous disappearance) is something I never heard or thought about before, but it makes sense. It’s hard to visualise it though. Like the earth is a marble circling a drain after plug has been pulled and the water is all but gone. Then the minute it is gone, the marble just keeps going in a straight line 👀

Thank you so much for this excellent write-up! And for providing interesting reading material, too.

It’s amazing to me (an uneducated sub-layman) that things like dark matter and dark energy aren’t well-understood, but we can nonetheless still do this kind of science and detect black holes colliding through ripples in spacetime 🤯 But then again, it’s amazing to me that rivers never run out of water (joking… sort of…).

That LIGO sound clip is for sure going into the intro of a metal song.

Wow, that’s an incredible thought. So “ziiiiiiip” there goes the uberobject. 4 minutes later, all of the budgies on earth are knocked off their perches.

Would that uberobject heat up the earth as it passes? Not sure how that would work, but it seems like a good question 🤣

Damn, 58’s nothing. Barely middle age these days. I hope whatever it was that killed her was quick. She worked for some scumbags, but that’s hardly a reason to celebrate that a family has a dead wife, mother and possibly daughter to bury.

Is there a standard/preferred list order for non-alphanumeric characters?

Alphanumerical lists are sortable by alphabet and number, obviously, but if you have a list where each entry begins with a different punctuation mark (or any other kind of non-alphanumeric character), is there a similar standardised ordering method for them?...

It’s not unusual for people to say one thing and do another. It’s not unusual for someone to be so aggrieved that their friend died that they try to hurt the people who indirectly caused it, i.e. Boeing, so they stretch the truth for the greater good, as they see it (maybe he really said it, but as a joke, which has now been upgraded to “a cold statement of fact said with a straight face”). It’s not unusual for people to push themselves into the limelight as a “close friend” when they weren’t. It’s typical of suicides that the person seems about as unsuicidal as you can get, then apparently out of the blue and on a moment’s notice decides to do it. The man was under extreme stress, and had been for a long time. People in that situation don’t think the way we do when we read about it; being that person in that situation will necessarily change how you think and no one else can understand it until they’ve been through it. If you’ve ever had clinical depression, for example, you’ll know how indescribable it is to people who haven’t dealt with it. So saying “why would he do it, he was so close to the finish line!” means sweet fuck all.

The same could be said for Boeing: the case was almost over, and John being dead doesn’t change anything about that. It does them no favours, the evidence of their fuckery is already well-established. He was, after all, a whistleblower. Once the whistle is blown, it’s a bit late to start offing people. Or do we all think they killed him as mere retribution/punishment?

If they have the means and the skills to make someone’s murder look like suicide to law enforcement and the coroner, how can they be so fucking stupid to think no one would find it suspicious and make them look bad regardless? In the age of rampant conspiracism on TikTok and Twitter and the armies of reddit detectives derailing murder trials, they would have been better offing their own CEO and making it look like suicide, after he writes a lengthy note taking the blame for everything.

Dr. David Kelly said “I’m gonna end up being found dead in the woods”, which he was, but all evidence points to it being a suicide. Princess Diana said “Charles might try to kill me in a car accident”, but the evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of her fatal accident being just that, an accident, and her supposed “friend” the butler made up a whole load of shit about her to sell a book.

Now, I’m not saying this couldn’t possibly be a hit. But the evidence for it, at this moment in time at least, is extremely weak. It’s a whisper of a suspicion based on movie logic, but of course the internet and the “Epstein didn’t kill himself” memebrains are just running with it.

And yes, Epstein fucking killed himself.

I released my first game on Steam and got rid of impostor syndrome!

My first game Mushy Score is out on Steam! I have been creating games since I was a child but never felt like a real game dev. Now I finally have a game that I can show to other people.

Mushy Score is a 2D Roguelike where you fight against endless waves of enemies. Collect points and try to get a high score! I am super exited for the release !

If you like similar games go check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2480740/Mushy_Score/

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I’ve realized that in conversations I’ll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I’ve been thinking that it’s not as inclusive to women/trans people....

Elon is psychologically compromised. Not sure if it’s rampant drug abuse, mental illness unrelated to drugs, a brain tumour, or what. But the man is not on planet earth, and not in the way he would prefer. If he weren’t a billionaire, he’d be sectioned/committed. Same with Kanye; that dude would be in care in no time flat if he were a regular Joe. This is one of the few ways that being rich and famous is a net negative; when you need help the most, you get enablers and yes men instead fermenting your insanity for their own purposes or out of fear for their own livelihoods.

Has there ever been an attempt to do a modern "novelisation" of Shakespeare's plays?

We get novelisation of films, but what about plays? I know I can freely read his plays anywhere online, but surely reading a script is less ideal than reading a novelised version written for people who were born sometime after Bach, assuming you’re not planning a word-for-word performance yourself of course....

Why do I enjoy the combination of two flavours if they arrive separately, but hate them when they arrive pre-combined?

By way of an example, I was eating a salad which had raw onions in it. I then took a sip of Coke. The combination of the two flavours was amazing, but I know that if someone handed me an onion-infused Coke, I’d find it horrid....

Makes sense, maybe if the oniony flavour was in little clots floating within the Coke it would work better (just realised how profoundly gross that sounds).

You must pick a point in human history before the 1950s to be spend the rest of your life in. What era and place would you choose?

You would still have the same age, gender, personality, skin color, etc. and you would be able to speak at least one local language and would know basic information of the era and place. Your family, social standing, and such would be randomly picked.

Hypothetically speaking, what alterations to our biology/genome would need to occur in order for us to be able to safely drink saltwater?

Could we, in theory, use something like CRISPR to give a new baby replacement super-kidneys (or whatever organ it is that makes drinking saltwater be a bad time)? It seems like if we cracked that, we’d be set as a species....

Damn, sorry you have to make such efforts, and for so little return. Maybe you can just be straight with him? Not sure how receptive you think he’d be to that. Like “I’m not trying to change your opinions, but you don’t need to bring up cancel culture and wokeness in every conversation, just like I’m not trying to convince you to start transitioning into a lass every time you bring up last night’s football game. Even if I agreed with you 100%, this shit is exhausting.” Or words to that effect.

I’m already anticipating a possible response: “Just because I’m not a sheep like everyone else, content to live in their own little bubble while the world burns around them, doesn’t mean I have to be.” To which I would respond “well, I hope you enjoy being ‘right’ on your own as you eventually push away everyone who has your back in this life, because even the most vicious conservative doesn’t spend 24 hours of his day talking about this shit in conversations that don’t call for it. They have other hobbies and interests, and they have enough self-preservation to know when to stop pushing their beliefs on family and friends.”

Or “yeah, I’m a sheep in a bubble, so can you show me the decency to let me do that in peace? I wanna have a relationship with you, I don’t care that you disagree with me politically, because there’s more to you than who you vote for or what cultural bullshit you’re currently obsessed with. Why can’t you see the same breadth of character in me?”

Sorry for the wall of text, your post may have triggered a few memories from my own life… 🤣

Hair shape (curly or straight or somewhere in between) is determined by the follicle, which is itself determined by genetics. Nothing to be done about that, I’m afraid! At least not currently; I’m sure one day in the future we will be able to alter our genes on-the-fly, but until 2077, we’re stuck with our old hair-straighteners.
