Jimmycrackcrack , (edited ) to asklemmy in Can I be picked up from my mom's house as a date since I am an adult?

You’re probably going to have to have a chat with your mum about this because if there’s not a good specific reason for her concern, then it would be helpful to you if she could relax on this issue because it’s impinging on your ability to enjoy your life as an adult. She should care about that and if she doesn’t that tells you something. Ideally you could avoid the whole issue by meeting your date somewhere other than your house, although it will be awkward if you are unable to return home with them at any stage. Can your sister or any of your friends give you a ride to meet your date elsewhere?

A point of confusion I have from your post is whether you’re asking about your rights to date people, or just your rights to have them pick you up from the house. As far as dating people is concerned, you say you’re 25, you can do what you want neither your Mum nor your sister have any choice about it. You do not have to justify this or use your recent birthday as an excuse for anything because there’s nothing to excuse. Whether you want to date people is up to you and you alone.

If your Mum specifically requested that you not bring your date to the house it would be rude to just ignore her, particularly if she has some special reason to be extra careful, but it’s also a very strange request for her to make of her 25 year old adult-child so you’ll definitely need her to give a pretty good explanation why you shouldn’t do this. Similarly, it’s a very strange situation to be in that you’re worried about your sister watching camera footage of you as some kind of evidence of wrong doing, why is she in a position to do that and why would she want to? How old is she? Such behaviour is bizarre and controlling.

A lot of the details of your post sound like you’ve been living in strange and possibly abusive circumstances where your mother and sister are putting a lot of effort in to monitoring and controlling you, which they do not any rights to do. In most places I know of, a person is legally an “adult” at 18 years of age, how long have they been doing this to you? Were you allowed friends and relationship in school? What about afterwards at work or university?

Do you want to continue living with your mother? It might be a good idea to start gaining some more independence in your life so you can safely choose to live in a different arrangement if you want to. No offence, but the way you write does sound strangely young and naive for a 25 year old, especially the idea that you need to have either your mother or your sister around to look after you. Do you have friends that know about your living arrangements? Do you know many people outside of your house? If you tried to make friends and spend time with them, is that something your mother would try to stop you doing? It sounds like you’re very isolated and your Mum is keeping it that way on purpose. Unless there’s some very specific context that can explain all these details, then it sounds like there’s something very wrong about how your family is treating you.

I use virt-manager, aka Virtual Machine Manager. Using this specifically because of the winapps for Linux repo has instructions on how to get Windows apps to run through the VM to be integrated in a Linux environment.

Mwa OP ,
@Mwa@thelemmy.club avatar

might try that tbh am gonna run razer software or apps that dont work on linux at all and for games am gonna use my windows ssd

CosmicTurtle0 ,

How “scriptable” is virt-manager?

My biggest issue with VirtualBox is that I have to install OSes as if I’m actually installing them. There aren’t any images (at least that I’m aware of) that can run with a command, like deploying an EC2.

skullgiver ,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

virt-manager is a frontend for a bunch of virtualisation systems, but usually it’s configured for qemu+kvm+libvirt.

Libvirt is a dedicated API to managing virtual machines. It’s probably most versatile when launching new VMs on it by using the libvirt XML definitions, but there’s an API you can use if you want more low level access, and optional command line tooling as well.

Something like virt-install --name=lemmyvm --vcpus=1 --memory=2048 --cdrom=/tmp/debian-netinst.iso --disk size=50 --os-variant=debian12 should automatically install a Debian 12 VM (from a downloaded ISO) through the automated setup process. It’s been a while since I used that, though, so you may need an extra step or two to get the setup to autocomplete today. I think cloudinit is how you auto setup Linux distros these days?

stsquad ,

Virt-manager isn’t super scriptable but the underlying libvirt can be controlled by virsh which is a shell interface to libvirt. You can use both at the same time, e.g. start and stop via virsh and access to gui container via virt-manager/virt-viewer.

We already have instances that go down or suffer from intermittent federation issues when lemmy.world gets a bit more active. The most conservative estimates are putting Reddit at 75 million DAU. If we get to 1% of that, you can bet that our current network would choke, badly.

Not only we need more instances, we also need to be a lot smarter about their organization and how to architect this network. I think we will only be able to grow larger if we make a more intentional separation between topic-based instances and “people-home” instances, so that we can have a better spread of the load.

We need more instances, but we need to be a lot smarter about the structure. I think we will only be able to grow larger if we make a more intentional separation between topic-based instances and “people-home” instances, so that we can have a better spread of the load.

I don’t know if it would help with load-balancing, but I feel hash tags would be better than communities.

rglullis ,
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

This goes against the design of ActivityPub, which requires people to follow actors. A hashtag does not have a single name, so people would have to follow all servers and/or the servers would have to relay activities that are not originating from their actors. It is possible, clunky to implement.

ericjmorey ,
@ericjmorey@discuss.online avatar

Isn’t that just Mastodon and similar services? I prefer the community url scheme more that the hashtag scheme.

muntedcrocodile ,
@muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee avatar

The total federated bandwith is definatly a bottle neck we are starting to approach (ie what we see with .world and it overloading small instances). Not sure the solution here but I’m sure we can work past it without compromising on decentralisation.

rglullis ,
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

Not sure the solution here

I am more and more convinced that we will need something like what I outlined here.

ericjmorey ,
@ericjmorey@discuss.online avatar

Good article. But the trend of the internet it to not use a browser but an app that often emulates a browser.

rglullis ,
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

Which is still a client. I honestly don’t care if we are talking about a mobile app, a PWA, a browser extension, a SPA or a dedicated app: as long as the business logic goes to the edge and the server is a “mere” dumb pipe, we should be okay.

ericjmorey ,
@ericjmorey@discuss.online avatar

That would be better, but also put more cost on the users who have been spoiled by decades of someone else paying for incremental access to, storage of and processing of data.

Lojcs ,

It’s not the size, it’s the content. Lemmyverse is a lot more serious and honestly, gloomy. Average age seems to be quite higher too. If all you used reddit for was news, politics, technical discussion and porn lemmy might be perfectly fine but there’s way less meme or entertainment content here

rglullis ,
@rglullis@communick.news avatar

There is less of everything. Less sports, less hobbies, less local groups, less crafts, less academic discussions, less indie hackers and entrepreneurs, less fashion/brand/style enthusiasts…

Memes and entertainment are too shallow and can be found anywhere, we need to focus on getting some people focused on the deeper end. Reddit’s strength is in its long tail of interests. Instead of running blackouts or general protests, we should have focused on bringing one specific community to Lemmy (like e.g, knitting), figure out the issues and support them to migrate fully. If we pulled that off, other communities would have a template to emulate.

AstralPath ,

The way I see it is that when I’ve run out of content on Lemmy, that’s my indication to put down my phone and do something else. My buddy framed it in that way during a discussion we had the other day and I think he hit the nail on the head.

Lojcs ,

If I only browsed my subscribed feed that’d maybe amount to to 5-10 minutes of stuff a day. On the other hand if I open the all feed there’s an endless steam of the stuff I mentioned above. As I said, what’s lacking isn’t volume it’s the content of the volume

I don’t mean discussion about entertainment, I mean communities that entertain you like damnthatsinteresting, unexpected, nextfuckinglevel etc. And considering how much of their content is in video form, I don’t think they can viably exist in lemmy.

Maybe generic and reposted memes are, but nothing of the sort of niche meme communities that constantly popped up in reddit

I still appreciate Lemmy more. It’s more intimate and people are way more respectful. Also, Reddit is full of shit comments. Lemmy comments aren’t perfect or amazing, but I visited Reddit this week looking for memes (agree with your point on quantity of memes) and perused the comments. I forgot how stupid and formulaic Reddit can be. I’m really happy that didn’t transfer over to Lemmy.

EmoDuck , to nostupidquestions in Why do people complain about multiple streaming platforms existing?

The problem is exclusive rights.

If you wanna watch 3 different shows but they are all on different platforms, then you gotta go and pay for all 3. You can’t just watch the Netflix version of Loki, or the Disney+ version of Ted Lasso.

You mentioned monopolies but the problem is that each platform holds hundreds of monopolies, each for one specific show/movie.

In a perfect world, there would be some sort of law or agreement against exclusive rights, where every service can show any product they bought the (non-exclusive) rights to.

In that scenario, streaming services would have to compete by being the cheapest or offering the best service.

But alas, this is not a perfect world

atzanteol , to linux in [help] systemd-resolved how to keep DNS server order?

You can’t. Well, you shouldn’t rely on queries going out in any particular order. All of your DNS servers should behave the same way as clients may fail from the first one to a secondary.

Why do you care which one is being used? What are you trying to do?

clmbmb OP ,

I want to have ads blocked with pihole and at the same time to have local DNS served by the router. I know pihole does local DNS, but RouterOS (mikrotik) is much better suited for that.

skullgiver ,
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

If you set the Microtik as Pihole’s upstream server, you should get both Microtik’s local domains and ad blocking.

You may need to disable DNSSEC validation to get it to work if you use a real domain for local records, though.

clmbmb OP ,

Thank you. I’ll have it set like this.

Gnome boxes.

Based on QEMU+KVM so it’s quite robust. It works pretty well, plus it has various little features working out of the box that in some other software is a pain in the arse to configure.

Sticks out a bit on my system due to still being GTK3, but there is a GTK4 prototype out that usually works well.

E: downvoting anybody who says Gnome Boxes because you use a different virtual machine frontend is laughably pathetic lmao. Some people in the Linux community are such losers lol
