DessertStorms , to fediverse in Thoughts Around KBin's Current Status and the Importance of Community Migration Features
@DessertStorms@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I really miss kbin… 😔(no hard feelings, I genuinely wish Ernest the best and hope he makes a comeback)

I actually tried migrating my account from there before the major issues, as a backup, but realised it didn’t back up my blocked lists, which are much harder for me to recreate than my subscribed list and settings are, so decided to wait and see if anyone improved the migration tools.

Then it became too late, and I had to start from scratch, and am now regretting the instance I chose, and have not yet had the brain space to check out the other kbin/mbin instances and find a new one I like. Until then I’m reluctant to participate.

If anything, the last couple of months, with kbin dying and realising how uncomfortable I am on an instance run by people who have expectations from their users I fundamentally disagree with, have made me want to start my own private kbin/mbin instance for myself so that I don’t end up in either situation again, but I don’t know that it’s something I can take on, having no programming knowledge or any experience with anything like that.

So yes, I agree with you, for more than the reasons you’ve provided, and I hope we, as a general community use these developments to learn and improve.

Honestly I would just keep self-describing as “weird” if I were you. If it really is damé to do so, then use a thesaurus; or if you’re multilingual, be a little macaronic.

What content on what websites and how?

That is the main info that needs to be presented.

hendrik ,

Well, I'd say take content you yourself like. Maybe something with value. It's always nice if people who are passionate about something are involved.

Regarding websites: I'm not sure if that's the correct way. Usually they're done by a small closed group. And if you want to be a pirate, you have to climb the ladders. There isn't a simple tutorial that makes you the captain stright away. You start scrubbing the deck, learn how things work, gain knowledge and choose where to get involved. Slowly you'll learn and someday may be crew or even first mate.

So dive in. Watch. See what you like and see if there's something at that place that could need your attention. And ask the people there.

ModerateImprovement OP ,
@ModerateImprovement@sh.itjust.works avatar

A lot of piracy is really done by normal people like me and you( you can see this in case of journals, books, music, movies and porn)

No one will learn by watching, we need more people to get involved.

@WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

To be honest, this post seems very ignorant of the entire scene.

How do you know where to go? You run in techie circles and online groups. You look for ways to apply to different trackers. This isn’t hidden info.

You act like piracy is one big library that needs shoring up in specific places. It doesn’t really work like that. Find a few communities you like, download content from them that you like, seed forever.

After you have built a big library of things you are seeding, maybe volunteer for a low level staff position.

But the basic take away is that piracy is fine as it is. It doesn’t need you to save it. The best thing you can do is seed and keep learning.

LarmyOfLone , to asklemmy in Word to replace "weird" when used in a positive context

I’d argue that weird isn’t being used as an insult, but to state that the bullies are in fact not representing the norm. They are outside the norm but pretend to be normal, they insist on being normal - which makes it weird. It’s not an insult to us, but it is an insult to them. Which makes it funny.

Fascists believe in inequality based on identity, while we kinda thought we had this already sorted that we all believe in equality now. Like all people created equal. But their need to define an identity as superior and then attacking anybody outside the norm is being used against them. And it IS weird to do that, most people simply don’t care if you’re a little weird. We still have to learn to be more tolerant to more weirdness and not react with biases or irrational emotions. Respect weirdness.

So weird isn’t being used as an insult but as a way to rob them of their power - their attempt to define a new normal. And their arguments and attacks against anyone else are becoming increasingly bizarre, less founded in reality, absurd claims. Comical. Weird.

There is the metaphor about slowly cooking a frog without him noticing, shifting the overton window. Weird sort of resets that. It is more an attack on what they DO than what they are.
