If all punishment is capital punishment, then I’d keep it as laissez-faire as possible.

Except for “no parking in the bike lane”. That one’s worth.

Nemo , to asklemmy in Is there any chance the decay of the extended family can be reversed?

Yes, but it requires moving away from the automobile as the primary form of transit, and shifting the balance of labor relations more towards workers. The main antagonist of extended families is the expectation that skilled workers relocate for jobs.

LibertyLizard , to workreform in Your opinion on HSE

Maybe you should define HSE? I have no idea what that stands for.

Sorry about that. Health safety and environment.

LibertyLizard ,

Thanks. Is this some new corporate trend? My workplace is pretty old-fashioned so I’m a little insulated from all these weird ideas they come up with.

It’s the governing body for health and safety in the workplace (UK).

There a few things I’ve wanted to try for a while, but haven’t gotten around to it.

AstroJS (I’ve tried it, but only half-arsed)… It’s cool, but the lack of native react support scares me…

Cosmic DE… Still waiting for the alpha.

Python. It’s a good language, I’ve spent some time learning it, I’m just failing to find a use case for it atm.

Textual (Python framework). It’s really cool, but OOP scares me.

JohnnyWishbone , to nostupidquestions in I want to donate old work shirts, but I don't want people to be mistaken for employees there. How do I remove the logos?

A lot of companies require branded work wear to be returned or destroyed to stop people impersonating their employees. It may not seem like a big deal but a bad actor could use it in any number of ways.

Imagine some one used a branded work shirt to gain access to your granny’s house when she thought they were from a company or service they trusted etc.

Certainly the police and other emergency services won’t want their uniforms in the wrong hands.

In my view it might seem like wastage but there are good reasons to destroy these clothing items, I guess it depends what business you’re in.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Just…. A small point. You can buy the basic police uni from a uniform supply store, no questions asked.

Depending on where you are, patches are a lot harder to come by but most places reasonably accessible. You can buy generic patches on Amazon.

Patches are a collectors item to some people, it’s perfectly legal as long as you don’t actually impersonate a cop.

And if you slap on generic patches that look remotely close, Joe Idiot ain’t gonna know.

tenchiken , to asklemmy in Men in their 40s, what’s one piece of advice for men in their 20s?

Don’t let others control your life. If someone is only making you hurt, cut them off clean.

This especially is for blood relations! Only scared old people say that shit about obeying your elders! If your family or immediate “friends” only use or abuse, get out fast!

There’s always a place and tribe for you, don’t let assholes dictate who you are or “should be”.

It took 30 years and most of my physical health to learn that one! Injured spine, nerve damage, financial issues … All from the group I grew up around being hideously toxic.

I’ve been free of them for about 5 years now and am finally healing, both physically where I can and mentally. Financially too, just slower.

I now have loving girlfriends, an amazing and healthy daughter, and I’ve been able to start reconnecting with the people that really clicked with me but were forced away by my family and their friends for being too different from them. I barely got a year and a half with my best friend I’d list touch with before he suddenly was diagnosed with and died from pancreatic cancer.

Don’t waste your time on people who drain you with nothing to return! You and the people who improve you don’t have the time and energy to spare!

Great app. I often go where there is no connectivity so I can still play music. My only wish was that the resume on play lists is better. It’s kinda guess which song you were last on and you have to tap this dinky link that drops away pretty quick.

I paid for the app as I’d rather give LR my $$$ than the d!(kh3@ds at Google.

Lettuceeatlettuce , to asklemmy in How can we believe and trust censored Bibles?
@Lettuceeatlettuce@lemmy.ml avatar

There is no “original Bible.” Different sects of Christianity have different canons that they consider “scripture.”

Most Protestants adhere to 66 books divided into the “old” & “new” testaments. Roman catholics include several more books commonly called the “apocrypha” or “deuterocanonical” books.

Various traditions in the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox sects such as the Syriac Orthodox church or the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church include even more books and depending on the specific tradition, don’t even have a closed canon of official scripture. They don’t really think of scripture in terms of being officially canonized, it’s more of a spectrum from “more authoritative” to “less authoritative.”

There was no defined canon for any of the early Christians for several centuries. Early Christians circulated many different epistles, religious poems, stories, legends, sermons, and parables, often just by oral tradition.

Some, like the gospel of Mark, are considered fairly historical by many scholars, others are more fantastical or don’t have as solid historical attestation.

There is active debate amongst scholars about authorship of the now canonized Biblical corpus and the level of historicity.

Take the Bible for what it is; an impressive and important historical work, really a small library of ancient literature. It’s not a magical text though, it was written by people in very specific sociological and historical contexts and should be studied and examined with those in mind.

If you find it enlightening and inspiring to your life and it helps you be a better person to others, that’s great. And if you attach special spiritual or religious meaning to it, that’s your call. But that doesn’t change the nature of what the Bible is and where it came from.

PiecePractical ,

And on top of that, different translations can effectively make different stories as well. Just look at the story of Dinah. Most translations day that she was assaulted but some would suggest that she just had consensual sex. That’s a distinction that effectively makes it a different story depending on who did the translating.

Research your professional value and have the courage to go after it if you are not being paid what you are worth.

I worked 17 years for the same company. I was promoted 4 times during those years and received a few extra pay increases along the way, but I was underpaid as soon as I took the first promotion and the gap increased with each additional promotion. I probably walked away from more than $100k in lifetime earnings, plus interest, by sticking with the company.

I should have changed companies at least once and probably twice. You don’t have to be on a promotion path to run into this. It could be you were underpaid on day 1, but you needed the job or you didn’t have experience. That’s fine, but once you have the experience and have proven yourself, find out what the market rate is for your role and ask for it, be ready to show your research. If you don’t get it, start applying for other jobs.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your peers about salary. If you are making less, you know there is a gap you can go after (just don’t name your coworker when you ask for more, do market research and make it impersonal/just business). If you are making more, pass this advice on to your coworker.

If you are being paid fairly for the work you are doing, but know you can do more, start looking into what it takes to make a move. For example, you might be the best fast food or retail worker the world has ever had, but the job only pays so much. What else might you be good at? You could look for training in a trade or try to find an entry level role in a company that has a wider set of tasks available that offers a growth path.

I agree with a lot of the comments here about saving and investing and keeping expenses down, but growing your earnings is typically easier than shrinking your rent. It still isn’t easy though, especially if you need to relocate to earn more.
