Even as a non native speaker “should of” feels really weird to me, it just doesn’t make sense. Is this a mistake English speakers do as well?

Stupid corporate policies and power tripping managers… Where would we get such quality content without them??

Lycanthrotree , to android in Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?

I may be one of the last hangers-on for this issue, but: my Android phone has a headphone port! That was non-negotiable for me last time I got a new phone. Earbuds do not stay in my ears, are super uncomfortable, and I don’t want to charge a wireless headset or mess with an adapter all the time. I have cheap wired headphones for going out and about that I don’t lose when they fall out because the wire catches them, and really nice wired headphones at home that are much better quality than wireless ones. My car also has a 3.5 mm hookup that sounds a lot better than Bluetooth audio.

Besides that: Having more customization and control. Firefox + adblockers and other extensions. ReVanced for YouTube. Easier access to the phone’s storage and files. Being able to block ads adds so much quality of life.

RebootRebootReboot ,

I absolutely agree with the 3.5mm headphone port. I use mine all the time as every wireless set of earbuds that I’ve tried has hurt my ears in minutes. I also can’t forget to charge my wired ones. It’s getting harder to find a decent phone that has both a headphone port and a micro SD card slot.

Lycanthrotree ,

I literally can’t keep the wireless earbuds in! I don’t know if my ears are too small or weirdly shaped on the inside or what. Sometimes I can kind of wedge them in for a minute, but only by having them actively digging into the sides of my ear. That hurts and it still falls out as soon as I move my head.

My current phone doesn’t have a micro SD card slot, but that’s another improvement I would really like to have. I like to keep a lot of pictures and files on my phone and it would be great to be able to upgrade the storage as it fills up.

nottheengineer , to youshouldknow in YSK: A car takes uses about seven seconds worth of fuel to start up. If you are going to idle for a period of time longer than that, you'll save fuel by turning your engine off.

Starting the engine puts as much wear on it as driving for 50 miles. Automatic start/stop hurts engine longevity by doing that unnecessarily and should always be turned off.

My car uses 0.5l of fuel idling for an hour. There’s no way in hell that a start/stop system would even save 10$ a year, so there’s no benefit to using it.

thekernel ,

That’s not true, cold starts cause wear not warm starts.

At most it’s starter motor and battery wear, start stop cars have agm batteries for that reason.

SpacemanSpiff ,
@SpacemanSpiff@kbin.social avatar

What about the fact that the oil drains to the pan in those few seconds that the engine is stopped?

This is my real concern. Sure you can upgrade starter motors and batteries to handle the extra cycles, but you can’t do anything about increased scoring and wear on cylinders in the milliseconds before the fluids start to circulate again.

mrcory ,

Some start stop engines have auxiliary oil pumps. I don’t know much about them besides random research I have done in the past out of curiosity.

Napa also claims some vehicles have auxiliary water and transmission pumps as well.

SpacemanSpiff ,
@SpacemanSpiff@kbin.social avatar

That might be true, I’m not a mechanical engineer but despite that, my understanding is that within the engine block itself, cylinders are primarily lubricated via the system holding pressure. This pressure starts to drop the second the engine ceases.

You can notice the effect on cars that have realtime oil temp monitors. Mine does, and it’s digital. My stable oil temp is around 216 degrees Fahrenheit. After a start-stop cycle, even for only 5-10 seconds or so, the temp drops about 5-8 degrees. After a minute, the temp is down 25 degrees. That’s significant. Essentially the engine is no longer “at temp” for the first 30 seconds or so after it resumes. That’s 30 seconds of additional semi-cold, under pressure wear each cycle.

Dymonika ,

Then why do so many new car models have auto-stop features that kick in at red lights? They would not do that if it wasn’t more efficient.

mtdyson_01 ,

And a heavier duty starter that is specifically made to be used often.

gerowen , to selfhosted in What's your backup strategy?

I have an external hard drive that I keep in the car. I bring it in once a month and sync it with the server. The data partition is encrypted so that even if it were to get stolen, the data itself is safe.

bernard ,
@bernard@lemmy.film avatar

I have a similar 321 strategy without using someone else’s server and needing to traverse the internet. I keep my drive in the pool shed, since if my house was to blow up or get robbed, the shed would probably be fine.

surrendertogravity , to gaming in What Indie hidden gems do you recommend?
@surrendertogravity@beehaw.org avatar

Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor is one of my favorite indie games of all time. The city design really captures the feeling of wandering around an unfamiliar, large, bustling place. The diary mechanic at the end of the day is a great way to get in character, and I like that you can decorate the apartment. I did some light data-mining (mostly item info and dialogue strings), and I even have fridge magnets of some of the pixel art!

Depanneur Nocturne is also a great evening’s worth of exploration and vibes, but I mention it because it has a reference to Spaceport Janitor and it made me SO happy when I realized that. :)

LostCause , to books in Fiction or nonfiction? Why?

I read non-fiction on my phone at work or on the go and fiction mostly with physical books. I enjoy both and would have a hard time to decide if I could only have one.

I’m actually not that into actual self-hosting (it feels too close to my day job). But i love the idea of it, and actually do host my own RSS Reader: It’s selfoss (PHP + SQLite, so, very simple) and i have been using ever since google reader shut down. It runs on my uberspace.de instance.

I dislike Apple alot, stupidly Expensive, more than they devices worth, very restrictive on what you can do with them (treat their customers as kids) and their monopoly.

There is also a wide variety of Android phones with different price ranges, and features (like my beloved headphone jacks), wider customisation and a somewhat better repaiability sometimes.

Grangle1 , to fediverse in My (Stupid) Ideas (cause I have no idea)

Redundancy (multiple instances making communities on the same subject) is a thing that’ll happen. I’m already subbed to communities on several instances dedicated to the same subjects. That can have an advantage, though, in that communities on the same subject but different instances can provide different perspectives on the subject depending on the makeup of the community in each instance (membership, modding, etc). Don’t like the community in one instance? Unsub from that one and hop on over to another one. Having one account able to access multiple instances allows for that. It can also help if one community or instance goes down for whatever reason, there may be another community/instance open where you can keep interacting. So I don’t see the redundancy thing as necessarily a problem.

I first made the switch to android after my iphone 5 died and found out the newer models wouldn’t have an aux output. I have significantly more chances to use a 3.5mm plug than bluetooth in my life, so it was an easy choice.

7 years later, and I still have the same phone. No bloat, and updated the way I want it. I charge it once per day at high-performance mode, and the battery is holding strong.

I keep an iphone dongle in my car for friends, because I am a gentleman, but they always remark on how easy it would be to just have the damn aux port.
