Have protected sex even if you only have access to non-biodegradable condoms, getting antibiotic resistant chlamydia isn’t going to save the planet.

Also from an environmental perspective, having a child is about the worst thing you can do compared to…using a fucking condom lmao.

I can’t recommend this highly enough if you’re never planning on having a kid or if you’re done having kids. I am a huge weenie when it comes to medical procedures and mine was super simple. I was sore for a few days, did my follow up, and that was it.

I still use condoms because of STDs but I never have to worry about accidentally having a kid if a condom breaks.

One baby can go through 6,000 diapers until potty trained.

One condom vs 6,000 diapers. I think your right about the condom doing less damage to the environment.

GbyBE ,

Just use the washable ones, made from organic cotton. Lower environmental impact, shorter time until potty trained as well on average. Still not as good as not putting extra people on the planet though 😁

Misinformation, not disinformation.

Also, many if not most people take “based on a true story” on TV at face value. Therefore it’s important to point out the inaccuracies.

CptEnder ,

I mean misinformation isn’t the correct term either if a work of fiction never intended to disciminate any real information in the first place.

“I mean misinformation isn’t the correct term either if a work of fiction never intended to disciminate any real information in the first place.”

Which was intended in the case of the Chernobyl miniseries:

Mazin’s interest in creating the series originated when he decided to write something that addressed "how we’re struggling with the global war on the truth right now".[23] Another inspiration is that he knew Chernobyl exploded, but he did not know why. He explained, “I didn’t know why, and I thought there was this inexplicable gap in my knowledge … So, I began reading about it, just out of this very dry, intellectual curiosity, and what I discovered was that, while the story of the explosion is fascinating, and we make it really clear exactly why and how it happened, what really grabbed me and held me were the incredible stories of the human beings who lived through it, and who suffered and sacrificed to save the people that they loved, to save their countrymen and to save a continent, and continued to do so, against odds that were startling and kept getting worse. I was so moved by it. It was like I had discovered a war that people just hadn’t really depicted, and I became obsessed”.[24] Mazin said that “The lesson of Chernobyl isn’t that modern nuclear power is dangerous. The lesson is that lying, arrogance, and suppression of criticism are dangerous”.” —https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_(miniseries)#Development_and_writing)

dustyData , to nostupidquestions in Why is waking up when my alarm goes off so difficult and unpleasant yet "sleeping in" does feel good and isn't satisfying?

If you want to know how to fix this problem, the term to search for is sleep hygiene. You’ve been waking up at the wrong times in your sleep cycle. Quality sleep is a matter of habits, every person is a bit different. Research and apply what fits best with your lifestyle. Also, invest in quality beds and pillows, as well as temperature regulation. It’s far more important than most people give it credit.

Shdwdrgn , to asklemmy in How to deal with exhaustion?

Another suggestion… have you considered if something in particular might be preventing you from getting good sleep? In my case, I’ve had restless-leg for quite awhile which was managed by doing some stretches before bed as needed. After a really car car accident, that went into overdrive, the stretches made no obvious difference and so I didn’t think that was an issue any more, but apparently I was tossing and turning all night. I’d sleep for 9+ hours and wake up a zombie.

After years of this I finally talked to my doctor about it, we discussed a lot of things and I mentioned how I had previous had the problems with my leg pains at night. He decided to try treating this symptom and suddenly I started getting real sleep again. By now it has gotten so bad that if I forget to take my pills at night, my legs absolutely scream at me the moment I lay down in bed. Yeah I’ll be on this med the rest of my life, but I’m getting good sleep now and feeling energetic the day.

The point is, your issue may be something you have already dismissed without realize fully how it affects you. When an unknown problem comes up, sometimes you just have to go back and reevaluate everything.

Omegamint ,
@Omegamint@hexbear.net avatar

Sleep apnea is also a potential

Shdwdrgn ,

That’s such a common thing these days that I have to wonder if humans have always had this issue, or if it has anything to do with our modern lifestyles. I was going to do a sleep study at one point, but when I took their questionnaire I checked off no on everything on their list. Then I found out my insurance wouldn’t even cover it, and couldn’t afford to do the study anyway. Ah well, if I ever get back to a point where I’m having trouble sleeping again then I’ll reconsider.

Omegamint ,
@Omegamint@hexbear.net avatar

Yeah it’s hard to say. There are, at least, a couple of things you can do to mitigate the problem without any professional help

VPN needs to come in from my domain IP, but exit from my network. What network security best practices should I be implementing?

themachine , (edited )

Best practices comes down to what you do or do not want the VPN clients to access. This mostly comes down to routing and firewall rules.

So, what should your users have access to?

Also what is the vpn?

SturgiesYrFase OP ,
@SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml avatar

Some users just need to be able to exit my home network.
I would like to, maybe, in the future have a file server/jellyfin, have access to other devices on my network and if I’m somewhere with low enough latency stream games off steam.

Just wanted to say, thanks for asking me for further details. You could have been a dick about my unclear initial post, and I appreciate your just picking away at it until I was a bit more specific about what I was actually asking for.
If this was reddit the whole thing would’ve been a fair bit more hostile.

themachine ,

You did not answer what VPN tech you are using.

Without that knowledge i would recommend setting up tailscale and having your users use that. If you want to be fully self hosted you can also run Headscale as the control plane instead of relying on Tailscales own service.

I recommend tailscale as it is very easy to grant a user privileges to ONLY use an endpoint as an exit node but also grant access to any other endpoints as needed (such as your future jellyfin server) via theor ACLs.

SturgiesYrFase OP ,
@SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah, yeah, sorry. Currently I’m using WireGuard, but I’m open to using something else.

I’ll have a look at Tail/Headscale, this was very informative, thank you very much.

themachine ,

In the scope of wireguard it’ll just be a matter of you building appropriate firewall rules.

Since you want their internet traffic to go through you then i assime you’re effectively pushing a 0.0.0.0/0 route to your clients. You then need to add firewall rules on your server to block traffic to its local subnet and in the future allow traffic to only your jellyfin server.

This is also pretty simple and nothing wrong with that setup.

Kaiyoto , to nostupidquestions in Why is waking up when my alarm goes off so difficult and unpleasant yet "sleeping in" does feel good and isn't satisfying?

Idk if part of the unpleasantness is due to waking suddenly, but if it is consider different alarms like maybe music, an alarm that gradually gets louder, a quiet alarm, or a vibrating alarm. Some have also mentioned alarms with lights that gradually get brighter.

I grew up with one of those cheap ass, plug in, buzzing alarms with the little peg you push in on the back and I still jump and freak out when I hear that sound.

stoy , to asklemmy in What is the craziest story from your life, so far?

I don’t have a lot of crazy stories, but I have one unusual story.

I got to go take a private train with my dad.

We had one first class car and one locomotive.

My dad worked in the train industry, he sold equiment used for railroads.

He called me one day and asked if I wanted to ride a private train, I had time so I gave the only apropriate answer, “yes”.

So after having worked a night shift I slept far too little, got on the train to the city my dad was in to ride the private train back.

He was doing a demo of his company’s equipment and had arranged for them to use a private train, I just joined him on the journey to our city as a fun and interesting experience.
