aksdb , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?

I ran Arch on a convertible laptop around 2006-2010. Most notes I did using OpenOffice Writer, with hotkeys to quickly add formulas. Drawings were done with the pen. Homework (where speed didn’t matter as much but where I wanted high quality) were done in ConTeXt.

Programming was done in FreePascal using Lazarus IDE or Java using Netbeans IDE, depending on the course and my personal preference.

I think I had no complaints from anyone. Quite the contrary, one professor even gifted me a book as a thanks for the high quality typesetting in my homeworks, since most students didn’t give a shit and had no fucking clue how to really use their beloved MS Word.

For the server I’ve used gogs for many years. It was easy to set up and has a web interface. What client you use is really up to you with git.

I’m also curious about how well LibreOffice and Microsoft Office mesh, i.e. can you share and edit documents together with MOffice users if you use LibreOffice?

You can. But if the sender is the type to use linebreaks for spacing and textbox for grouping, be prepared that the layout may explode after saving and reopening the .docx in LO.
But that’s the formats (MS OOXML) fault, consists mostly of proprietary extensions, no such issues with .odt (ODF).

KillingTimeItself , to selfhosted in What self hosting feels like (It's painful, please help 🥲)

this is just because it’s webhosted, anything that does anything on the web sucks and is terrible, everything else is actually so much better it’s fucking baffling to me.

web 2.0 is dead to me. web 3.0 won’t get off of the ground, we need web 2 electric boogaloo

2002 called*

and yes, they do want their opinion back, because the internet fucking sucks.

Presi300 ,
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

If you hate it so much… why are you on it atm?

KillingTimeItself ,

because there’s also a lot of good stuff on the internet. There was very little on the internet in 2002, and yet people still used it because it was cool. There is a shit ton of information on the internet now, most of which is garbage, and the rest is somewhere between mediocre, or decent, and some of it being genuinely good.

If you hate living, why even bother living? It’s a question of the ages. What’s the point of living if there is no grander purpose? Surely it means nothing, right?

I used to write z80 asm without an assembler back when I was a LOT younger. The ZX spectrum manual I had, had the full instruction list with the byte values.

I think it was oddly easier than some higher level languages for some tasks.

But, making changes was an utter nightmare.

Sorry if off-topic. You can try it here: macos9.app (or 8 if you replace the 9 with 8)

naonintendois , to interestingasfuck in A chart showing the handful of companies which own the majority of american news outlets

I’m surprised YouTube and Google News are listed as news outlets. They don’t create news content, they aggregate it. Arguments can be made about biasing which content is shown first, but not about the content itself, which is owned by the other entities on the list

anzo ,

Except some content is produced independently (of those outlets) by “influencers”, hence it makes sense to list them. Furthermore, I bet that for a huge proportion of the later generations these influencers are the main avenue to consuming News… specially if we added tiktoks, X, and all the crap.

naonintendois ,

I think it depends on the intent in the groupings. Is it money flow? Then it makes sense. Is it editorial influence? Then it seems to make less sense.

AFKBRBChocolate , to programmerhumor in Anyone here use assembly?

I had an assembly class in college. I didn’t love of at all. Got my first job after graduating and it was writing space shuttle engine control software, which was in assembly. I was kind of surprised at how fast it became natural after dealing with it full time. Still, it felt luxurious when we upgraded the controller and could do the software in C.

morphballganon , to interestingasfuck in A chart showing the handful of companies which own the majority of american news outlets

The fact that there are 3 entities called Fox, and they’re not all owned by the same company, is bizarre.

leo85811nardo , to programmerhumor in Anyone here use assembly?

From my understanding, one of the actual use case of assembly is for cyber security engineers to dump assembly instructions from a compiled program, so they can check for any potential vulnerability. I’ve also seen assembly included in an embedded codebase (the overall project is in C), which I assume is for more optimized performance and deterministic behavior

Hexbear2 , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?

2001-2005. My computer lab in the school of math and natural sciences (including computer science), had windows 2000 (best windows of all time), Apple Power PCs, and all dual booted linux. All we used for comp sci was linux. Yellowdog on the Power PCs. Learned to program/develop in C++ and Java, mostly used e-macs, goal was to never lift hands from the keyboard or use the mouse, keeps you in the zone. Used Gnome as the desk top environment back then.

So pretty good :)

Today I use linux mint with cinamon for day to day computing, been using it for about 10 years now without issue.

I went back to college for a professional program, and used linux mint in 2022, it worked out just fine. As far as office software, I used word 365 online through the university web portal.

I think word sucks a lot and 2003 and 2007 are the best versions and little improvement since then (improvement is efficiency and easy of creating an end-product), but I’m not willing to re-learn how to master Libre Office, I just can’t be bothered. So no input on that.

helpImTrappedOnline , to lemmyshitpost in IF THIS WAS A PLAIN TEXT POST YOU WOULDN'T HAVE READ IT

Should try this with lowercase text. I wouldn’t consider this “plain text” for the purpose of the expirament.

MeatsOfRage OP ,

It’s to match the picture, which was all uppercase. Just trying to remove variables.

Tlaloc_Temporal ,

The picture post was relatively innocuous, as full uppercase is very common in memes.

The text posts is very suspects, verging on bot trash, because text posts basically never use full caps for anything but emphasis within a paragraph or emphasizing a whole paragraph.

You don’t have two of the same meme in different formats, you have one meme and one drunk text. Reducing variables should have content representative of the format.

Your right to open boxes shall not be infringed

WoahWoah OP ,

🤣

clif , to nostupidquestions in Knife vs. Gun Control?

Depends on the state. Down here there are pretty much zero restrictions except with an asterisk that it’s illegal to harm someone with them… AKA, an extra charge of you’re a dick and stab someone.

I’ve been carrying an “out the front automatic” for the last few years.

WoahWoah OP ,

It’s kinda funny that they’re like knives are cool unless you stab someone with one. If only we had other laws covering the legality of stabbing someone. 😁

PsychedSy ,

Prosecutors really like those add-on laws.
