Zangoose , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?

I’m a CS student and Linux was great for all of the programming classes. For any classes that were more writing focused you can still use the online versions of MS office/Google drive. I’m assuming there aren’t any programs you’ll need specific to psychology but that is sometimes a problem with some STEM majors like engineering

The one problem that kept me dual-booting on my laptop was OneNote. I like taking notes using a pen for some classes (and my laptop has pen support) and nothing I tried on Linux even comes close in my experience. I tried obsidian + excalidraw plugin, along with xournalpp, but nothing came close for the way I take notes.

I've said before that I could add piefed support to Interstellar (it already had Lemmy and mbin support). The only thing I need is an api.

Truffle , to asklemmy in Why do I get a strange, yet comforting feeling when I stop in quiet places

I get this feeling too and actively look for it. My best times achieving this have been scuba diving or snorkeling, sitting still after an intense ashtanga class, stopping by after a storm while driving out of a woodsy lonely area. That lack of auditory or otherwise sense stimuli makes me feel super calm but I try to watch out how I do it so I don’t freak myself or others out. I have been tempted to go to a flotarium, you know like that kid from Stranger things in her giant tub of water, but it kinda scares me.

DreitonLullaby OP ,

The scuba diving sounds like it would do it for me, for sure. Even though I’ve never done it before and might not be able to because of my asthma, just imagining it (especially if I’m by myself), slightly gives me that feeling (I’m pretty good at visualising environments). That sounds like it would be fun.

Truffle ,

You are in for a treat I’m sure! I hope your doctor gives you the green light to go try it.

Honest question: Why does it matter if he’s a transphobe when choosing which Fediverse software to use? The software is FOSS and anyone can make their own instance. I don’t understand why his social views outside of sharing the software and protecting it from becoming proprietary matters when deciding what Fediverse software to use.

I’m not arguing my stance. I really want to understand what I might be missing.

Cyberflunk ,

When people are successful, sometimes their ideas are too. They become a sort of standard, or justified. While I speak only for myself, I think some folks feel like if this guy’s projects are successful he could use that success to oppres people. It happened to fluffy JK Rowling.

BackOnMyBS ,
@BackOnMyBS@lemmy.autism.place avatar

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining. What’s the relevant story with JK Rowling?

Cyberflunk ,

JK uses her platform (harry potter fame) to denigrate and oppress trans women (probably more). She regularly engages anti trans exchanges on public twitter. Considering the reach HP has for children, it could give her considerable chance to promote bigotry. Look up TERF.

goat ,

Because he’s the developer. He can easily change a line of code to exploit users and servers across the fediverse. Sure, some may notice immediately, but others won’t.

Because he’s the developer. He can easily change a line of code to exploit users and servers across the fediverse.

This can be done by anyone, and applies to any platform. It’s not a problem unique to Lemmy.

I also don’t see how transphobia and backdooring everyone are at all related.

Quill7513 ,

Right. Exactly. That’s why who develops things matters. Conduct at a project level dictates what comes of the things developed. The fact that this platform is developed by transphobes is a big FUCKING deal and is why I have hope for PieFed and Sublinks because they have actual factual solidarity and decency as core values.

Adanisi ,

The fact that this platform is developed by transphobes is a big FUCKING deal

Not really. Usually the issue is the platform devs also control the instances/servers but that isn’t the case here.

The code isn’t transphobic. The code is code. We shouldn’t reject perfectly good code because we don’t like who wrote it. That’s just giving the software solely to the people who do to the detriment of everyone else.

Honest question: Why does it matter if he’s a transphobe when choosing which Fediverse software to use?

  1. Because some people have actually financially supported him. I’m not trans, but I would be devastated to know that my money went to feed someone who wants to destroy me.
  2. I already have trouble convincing transgender people in my social circle that Lemmy as a software is safe for them to use even with the variety of trans-inclusive servers like yours, and will be safe and inclusive in the future.

A great example of (2) is the fate of PolyMC. Thankfully, the other developers forked it into Prism, but transphobia put that whole project in jeopardy for a bit.

The software is FOSS and anyone can make their own instance.

IMO that’s why I’m not immediately dropping my account and running for the hills, but it’s still not good. Most people don’t have the technical skills or the interest in learning them to run their own instance.

I really want to understand what I might be missing.

IMO it’s that even though he does not personally control how Lemmy instances are run, and even though we do have a good degree of robustness to transphobia because the software is FOSS, it is still both morally and technically ill-advised to have a transphobe at the helm of an open-source software project.

tiefling , to nostupidquestions in Knife vs. Gun Control?

Butterfly knives only became legal in NY and MA about 4 years ago. There’s virtually zero reason to ban them other than protecting stupid people from accidentally cutting themselves

(I’m one of those stupid people)

WoahWoah OP ,

I got one of those things at a state fair when I was a little kid and set about immediately cutting myself trying to flip it open and look cool. My mom took it from me shortly thereafter. That ended the short saga of WoahWoah and the butterfly knife.

At this point, I can’t think of any reason I would want one. People that can use them well look pretty cool, but as a purposeful knife, they seem pointlessly complicated and prone to user error.

tiefling , (edited )

I use one as my daily! I practice with it a lot and have a trainer to practice. Funny enough, I actually just modeled mine today in a photoshoot (am a circus performer)

As a daily they function as any other knife. If you’re experienced with them, you don’t even think about open or closing. There’s a tiny bit of security in knowing that most people are too afraid to hold one. I do also like that they absolutely can’t close on you while holding it.

I have cut myself though. The worst was when I did a toss that landed tip-down on my palm. But small harm doesn’t bother me.

Same reason they banned pinball in Chicago and NY. To distract the people away from what names politicians money.

dubyakay ,

I had one of those in high school and took it with me to a school trip in my back pack. We were at camp (think log houses) for three nights and I started spinning the blade daily. Lots of cuts (mostly on my hands) later I’ve learned to flip it like a pro. I can still do it to this day if someone hands me one. It’s like biking or swimming. Once you learn it, you don’t forget.

The teacher that was with us never said anything besides watching my progress. He was the coolest dude ever. I miss you, Mr Jones.

Trying out new things is always good. Best case you find new software you like, worst case you learned something new.

Sometimes limitations can foster creativity and end up with an even better workflow in the end by forcing you to reevaluate how you do the thing. Sometimes it doesn’t work out and that’s fine too but at least you didn’t pass on a potential opportunity.

Lrobie , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?

I had a great time. I studied electrical engineering and my department had moved from using Matlab to Python which made my life a lot easier. There was one class where we had to use a Matlab library but I was able to use Octave with the library. There weren’t any other programs we had to install there weren’t compatible with Linux. A lot of classes just required a web browser, no additional software, so no issues there.

adespoton , to technology in My LibreOffice install broke and there's this Calligra software that caught my eye, should I switch or just reinstall?

Depends.

Calligra has a great interface.

I’m unsure however how it does with importing/exporting documents, and how well it works with OpenDocument formats.

LibreOffice can edit my ClarisWorks documents from 35 years ago and can also open and edit my OpenOffice documents and display them exactly as they were 19 years ago.

PumaStoleMyBluff , to asklemmy in Have you been stolen from?

I took my bike out for a trail ride, decided to stop at home for a quick refill of water before going out again. I was in my house for under 3 minutes and my bike was stolen from my enclosed front porch.

Reported it with serial number to the police and a stolen bike website but never heard anything back.

I was in college and had to start leaving for classes 20 minutes earlier. I was pretty angry at the time. Now l’ll never leave a bike out of my sight unless it’s locked indoors or with two U-locks.

cashmaggot OP ,

Yeah, I wrote a thing up here. I actually heard it's not even two u-locks you want but a u-lock and a...chain or something? There's some kinda master-class crap on Youtube or something but basically the were some people out here probably ten years ago trying to figure out what would keep a bike from getting stolen. And they found that mixing a u-lock and a __ (I am going to assume a thick ass chain yet again - with a solid ass lock) was the best combo. But tbh nothing stops a monster =/!

Glad you're holding it down though.

I can’t say I have a favorite, but I do strongly favor anything strictly turned based. I’ve been playing Divided Reigns and its combat system is stellar imho, so there. Lots of weapon types, lots of attacks for each types, lots of skills, lots of magics. Makes non magic users at least as satisfying to use as spell casters.
