The idea that AI would be used to prevent companies from making money seems a bit far fetched to me.

Beacon ,

AI doesn't require a company. There are already AI created by independent groups

atrielienz ,

In it’s current iteration, either you run a local model which has limitations that I think would prevent it from being used to this end (I don’t know that for sure, and am happy to find out if anyone does know), or you use a corporate one. Unfortunately corps seem largely to want to use AI to make money and one of the best ways to make money in the age of information is ads. There’s a reason they have become more and more prevalent despite the fact that so many people hate them.

Only 3 more levels then I move on to the expansions. First time playing those, so looking forward to it!

The few times I’ve used AliExpress I’ve had expectations met in terms of product quality, exceeded in terms of customer support and disappointed in terms of promised delivery speed.

I don’t get the sense most people are any different.

RightHandOfIkaros , to nostupidquestions in Is this a triangle?

Yes, it has three corners and three edges. It is a triangle.

towerful ,

What if it had 3 corners and 4 edges? Or 4 corners and 3 edges?

november OP ,

I don’t think that can be a thing.

towerful ,

Yeh, seems not

RightHandOfIkaros ,

If a shape has 3 corners and 4 edges, it is incomplete or open and therefore not a shape yet but a collection of edges (or possibly, two triangles that share an edge).

A shape with 4 corners and 3 edges is not possible. An edge cannot have a corner in the middle of it, that would make it two edges.

towerful ,

I felt like adding something about the specific case of 180° between edges and a vertice.
Makes sense.
And I guess too many vertices means an open set of edges (ie not close, this not a shape).
I was kinda hoping for a strange edge case, like a mobius strip or Klein bottle.

I guess a mobius strip is a 2d representation of a 1d paradigm. And a klein bottle is a 3d representation of a 2d paradigm.
It would be too much to ask of a 1d representation of a ??d paradigm.

RightHandOfIkaros ,

Welcome to Lemmy, first time?

towerful ,

I feel my comment adds to the discussion and wants more details.
But it was too simply phrased.
I guess the details of such a question should be obvious. And if you need the details, the question doesn’t actually add the the discussion… It just seems idiotic!

I felt like there might be a really cool scenario where a vertice isn’t considered a vertice.
Like, there actually might be some case on a 2d plane “where actually” applies.
I’m fine being wrong

morphballganon ,

It doesn’t matter that the edges are curved?

november OP ,

They’re not curved; the space they’re embedded in is curved.

Azzu ,

Well that depends on your definition of curved… If I look at this image from a 3 dimensional coordinate system that includes the sphere, the edges are definitely curved. Of course, if you look at this from the coordinate system “surface of the sphere” then I would agree with you. There are 2 ways to look at this and decide if it is a triangle, and the bro you responded to didn’t understand this and needs it explained.

bdonvr ,

I don’t think this is relevant. Using your first definition there is no possible way to walk in a straight line on a sphere. While true in that context I don’t think it’s what most people are meaning by “straight line”.

Azzu ,

But it’s absolutely clear that the first definition is meant by the person that is being responded to. That is why the clarification is needed. This is not about “most people”, but this specific one person in this specific comment thread. “It doesn’t matter that the edges are curved?” is only said by someone that thinks in the first definition, not in the second.

someacnt_ ,

The space itself has canonical curvature >.>

Donkter ,

The edges curve in 3d space, but not relative to the sphere.

bionicjoey ,

If you were to walk this route along the surface of the earth, you would walk in perfectly straight lines apart from the three turns.

I_Has_A_Hat ,

No such thing. Even if you were walking on a surface with no change in elevation, the acceleration due to gravity would cause your path to be curved as it followed the curvature of the planet.

abfarid , (edited )
@abfarid@startrek.website avatar

Curved relative to what?

Edit: Nvm, I understood what you mean. But I think it’s a pedantic take. They obviously mean it in the context of the surface of the sphere.

WaxedWookie ,

What did science and medicine ever do for me?

If you paywall publication and peer-review, you suppress a huge amount of science that doesn’t have the kinds of checks that corporate sponsorship and review introduce. This means studies of things like the dangers of CFCs, smoking, microplastics, thalidomide, and countless other things that’ll kill you will never see the light of day.

Gork ,

Honestly it’s crap like this, and the constant need to write grants, worry about funding, and crank out papers like there’s no tomorrow is why I ended up just going into industry instead.

Don’t get me wrong, I love science and scientific advancement, but the current system of publishing is super broken. What if you’re a civilian researcher who doesn’t have access to the big name journals? Well then be prepared to pony up $50/article.

As cm0002 said, you need to define your budget first. With that you can start looking around. You can find a more capable system than the SteamDeck second hand.

For a new system, look for a System Integrator that offers warranty. Usually local PC stores offer this kind of service.

harsh3466 , to showerthoughts in I want an AI TV that blocks all forms of advertising.

You’ll never be able to buy that at like a Walmart of Best Buy type retailer. TVs these days are already just spy machines to serve ads. It’s a lovely idea, but it’ll never happen.

linearchaos ,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

TVs are cheap right now like really cheap. I seriously doubt they’re selling them much above cost and making the money back on the advertising and information gathering.

I don’t think any of the TV manufacturers would bulk too much at selling you a TV but it’s going to be at a price of around the lifetime value of your watching habits. You can get a 50-60" reference monitor for about 10 grand. If there was a market for it Best buy would probably sell it.

BearOfaTime ,

Yep.

I’ve previously used PiHole and my smart TV got so much faster because it couldn’t load the BS.

Just using NextDNS or any other ad blocking DNS makes it work better.

Even with just 8gb of Ram you can have a windows 10 vm to do the only few things you can’t on Linux. It’s gonna be really slow but if you need it once a year it’s fine.

CaptDust , to pcgaming in What is the best value, out of the box PC gaming solution?

You’ll need to define a budget for “really affordable”, but it’s going to be hard regardless to match the price performance of the deck. Is $700-$1000 affordable? That’s probably the ball park for a mid-tier prebuilt. You maybe be able to get lower with an Intel Arc option (HP has some of these at $600)
