MindTraveller ,

The dictionary sucks.

Anticorp ,

Even magic itself loses its magic when you know how it works.

OpenStars ,
@OpenStars@discuss.online avatar

Does it, really? Or is it “magic” all the way down…? :-D

Anticorp ,

As someone who was crazy about magic as a kid and learned a bunch of magic tricks, yes, it does. Really.

OpenStars ,
@OpenStars@discuss.online avatar

Oh yeah, for magic “tricks” that’s fair:-).

You could still use it to cause squeals of delight from young’uns who don’t know any better yet. So the utility is vastly diminished, but not entirely gone.

lone_faerie ,

As someone else who was crazy about magic as a kid, I feel like that just made magic even more magical. Having an understanding of how magic tricks work lets you really appreciate the art and be truly wowed when you see a trick you can’t figure out.

Anticorp ,

I still appreciate it, but the “magic” is gone. It becomes an intellectual and physical challenge once you understand the mechanics behind slight of hand and other forms of stage magic.

MindTraveller ,

What did you think of magic after you learned occultist techniques?

Anticorp ,

That it’s not real, which was also a disappointment.

MindTraveller ,

Of course magic isn’t real. Magic occupies the border between reality and unreality, and is the mechanism by which effects cross it. Take money, for example. Not real, it’s just a social assignment of value. Magic is what makes money have real effects on the world.

Anticorp ,

Of course magic isn’t real

It’d sure be a lot cooler if it were.

MindTraveller ,

Nah, reality is bad

lone_faerie ,

Yeah, for sure. To me, the intellectual and physical challenge is the magic.

Anticorp ,

I guess to me the magic that’s left are the reactions I get from people who really love magic. There isn’t really anything else I can do that provokes such a happy reaction from people. Plus the genius behind some of these tricks is really amazing. Guys like David Blaine really are geniuses in their field. I found a PDF file on the torrent network that contained all of his popular tricks back in the mid 00’s, and the looks of absolute amazement I got at parties was priceless. One of my brother-in-laws accused me of being a warlock when I showed him some tricks the first time I met him. Haha!

yesman ,

If you understand how quantum mechanics works, why are you keeping it a secret?

Viking_Hippie ,

Out of pure spite.

JayDee , (edited )

If you understand magnets you know how magic works. Hell, even aerofoils seem like a glitch in reality.

MindTraveller ,

Any sufficiently analysed magic is indistinguishable from science!

sinkingship ,

Totally agree. I just witnessed my sister delivering her baby a few days back.

amanneedsamaid , to asklemmy in Are your grandparents and parents nice or tolerant people?

Yeah, my parents are perfect, my grandparents are like ~80% there. One side is a bit religious conservative (thankfully anti-Trump), and the other side’s grandfather has an odd idea that all black people naturally don’t want to work. Other than that one sentiment, he isn’t racist in the slightest, but he insists that’s the case.

themachine , to selfhosted in Simple safe encryption for a server?

If you want simple you’ll have to manually decrypt each time it needs doing.

If you want it to be “automatic” then your best bet is something network based. A “simple” would be to just have a script ssh’s somewhere, pulls the decryption key, and then decrypts the disks. There’s plenty of flaws with this though as while a threat actor couldn’t swipe a single encrypted disk they could just log in as root, get your script, and pull the decryption key themselves.

The optimal solution would be to also encrypt the root partition but now you need to do network based decryption at boot which adds further complexity. I’ve previously used Clevis and Tang to do this.

I personally don’tencrypt my server root and only encrypt my data disks. Then ssh in on a reboot or power event and manually decrypt. It is the simplest and most secure option.

I recently moved my ASUS ROG Zephyrus entirely over to Linux and it’s been seamless. I’ve been able to play every game without issue. Between my Steam Deck and the laptop, my console days may be numbered.

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I have one last windows machine hooked up to my TV, using Steam Big Picture. I’m going to wait until Dragon Age Veilguard just to see a new game how quickly it becomes supported/how difficult it’ll be to set up, but if I can get it working pretty quickly, I think that’ll be off Windows

orca ,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

What I usually do is change every Steam game to use the “Experimental” version of Proton. As soon as I enable that, basically any game in my library becomes installable. Even non-Steam games can be added in and use Proton iirc. My success rate has been pretty good, but some games are still a little rough (mostly lack of controller support, or things like traversing dumb launchers like in GTA).

scrubbles OP ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Oh yeah, the number one issues were with non-steam games, getting EA play to launch by itself. Learned a lot about Lutris and wine for that, DA:O and ME:L were both like that, but got both to work perfectly!

Oh yes, it’s just as good as money, it’s a real currency and totally not vapor as long as you act as your own bank and maintain ironclad digital and physical security, never slipping up a single time. Oh and your savings (because this is a currency) are completely uninsured. Totally reasonable asks to make of an average consumer.

Diplomjodler3 , to science_memes in Science is Magic

As a matter of fact, reality is far more exciting than magic. Magic is limited by what our feeble human minds can dream up. Science has shown time and time again that reality is far more complex and far more interesting.

ArbitraryValue ,

The difference between magic and science is that magic is centered on humans in the way that the entire cosmos was once thought to rotate around Earth. Both a magical universe and a scientific universe contain rules that humans can discover and tools that humans can use to influence their environment, but a magical universe is for humans and about humans whereas a scientific universe is not even indifferent to humans.

I admit that it would be nice to have gods and even the very fabric of reality care about what I want…

Mouselemming ,

Sorry, hon. The magical universe may SEEM to be centered around you, but you’re really just experiencing the side benefits of it being centered around me.

ArbitraryValue ,

Shut up, Harry Potter.

Mouselemming ,
ArbitraryValue ,

I think that’s actually a question that can be taken seriously. My answer would be that a Turing-complete universe with a mechanism for decreasing local entropy would be sufficient to make it possible (not necessarily likely) that some sort of computing entity would arise and comprehend something like the anthropic principle.

Mouselemming ,

Pretty much everything in Terry Pratchett’s oeuvre could and should be taken seriously. Praise Anoia that he also took it with a grain of salt, and with tongue stuck firmly in cheek!

MindTraveller ,

That’s, uh… That’s completely not true. I know lots of otherkin magic users. Magic tends to be more popular with otherkin than humans in my experience. Humans are happy to remain in consensus reality because it was built for them. Otherkin need to use magic to find worlds where they can exist.

WldFyre ,

What?

MindTraveller ,

Everything I just said is contextualised by the manifesto at soulism.net. TL;DR: reality is fake and bad, support minorities.

Diplomjodler3 ,

Translation: my acid was extra spicy today.

MindTraveller ,

Reality is a social construct and is therefore limited by human imagination.

PenisDuckCuck9001 , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in How does Ohio have stock for the new cannabis stores that just opened?

I’m actually surprised Ohio made it this far without their legislature pulling a fast one and bullshitting their way out of it somehow.

Lots of national businesses have headquarters in Ohio. Even where weed isn’t legal it’s like every other business “can’t find employees” because they refuse to drop thc from their drug tests so now they’re on the brink of collapse. I’m glad but surprised whatever lobbying efforts were probably made weren’t enough.

Mirshe ,

Oh they fucking tried a LOT. The public at large, and a lot of the lobbying groups, kept up the pressure really well to get this through.

Deconceptualist ,

There is at least one longtime Ohio business that’s very pro-cannabis. The CEO of Scott’s Miracle-Gro has been outspoken about it for years. Of course it’s profitable – they will gladly sell you fertilizer and accessories!

catloaf , to piracy in Is anyone aware of an Arr stack integration for spotify-downloader?

I have a cron script that just dumps it into my jellyfin library.

Some Google results suggest that Lidarr should be able to detect and import these automatically, but I doubt it works like you’d want it to. You can probably identify artists and add them through the API in the same script, then Lidarr should pick them up.

    goat ,

Funny how when others are called transphobic, it’s all hands on deck, no taking a moment to reconsider the facts or the context.

But for some reason, this particular example requires caution? If you know Desalines, or the lemmy devs themselves, you’ll know that transphobia is just the tip of the iceberg of their extremism. Have a look for yourself: !meanwhileongrad

    ArcaneSlime ,

It’s quite possible those tankies are the very same people excusing his transphobia, they already simp for Castro and Che, who rounded up gay people and put them in “totally not death camps” for their “mandatory service” where they were starved and worked and beaten to death, and they totally excuse him for that, too.

Yeah yeah, “later he said he was sorry he had all those gay people killed in concentration camps.” Uh huh.

    goat ,

i mean they love stalin who genocided the Ukrainians. soo

    WanderingVentra ,

Che wasn’t involved in those camps at all. And not only did Castro apologize, but ended up helping push some of the most liberal LGBTQ laws on the books in any country, including the US.

You excuse the US for all sorts of stuff, I’m sure. Reagan ignored a pandemic, all your founders were slave owners, hell, your current President is helping with a genocide and I’ve seen people excuse that all over Lemmy.

And for the record, even the tankie communities on Lemmy, like hexbear, disagree with nutomic’s comments.

    Quill7513 ,

Bullshit. BULLSHIT. The context is “hey this tool helps keep trans people safe, any chance we can integrate it or make the platform work with it?” And the response was that its made up. Fucking. That’s not baiting. That’s a feature request
