Ventoy > Rufus and also bypasses them by default.

Anon518 ,

Forums are still around. People just got lazy and started using reddit instead. Search engines are also to blame since they don’t bring up smaller forums in search results. People can go back to forums if they want.

Anon518 ,

I don’t understand why you and others are so mad about this. Stackoverflow is a great resource that takes significant time and money to maintain. I don’t have a problem with the maintainers making money by selling access to train AI on the data.

Having Stackoverflow as an alternative to reddit is important so that people aren’t stuck using reddit.

Anon518 ,

I’m grateful that Stackoverflow is a valid alternative to reddit for many things. Fuck reddit.

Anon518 ,

The point is to search the whole fediverse, not just one instance.

Anon518 ,

If enough people did it I think it would help stop people from going to reddit for info and make them seek out other websites.

Lemmy needs better integration/federation. Too much content is hidden. A community on the biggest instance was not visible to me on another large instance.

I did a search from shitjustworks for “reddit die” and did not find lemmy.world/c/watchredditdie so I made sh.itjust.works/c/watchredditdie (unnecessarily). This should really not happen. When someone makes a community there should be a “ping” sent out to notify all other federated instances....

Anon518 OP ,

The number of subscribers being completely different depending on which instance you search from is really weird/bad too IMO.

Anon518 OP ,

This works quite well usually.

I definitely don’t agree. I think this is very problematic. I rely on all to find new communities. I don’t think one newcommunities sub is a valid replacement. It would suffer from the same issue – people would have to spam their post to every single instances’s newcommunities sub, which is ridiculous and not even viable.

Anon518 OP ,

Yeah, the whole point of lemmy is to not be like that… so it definitely needs improvement.

Anon518 OP ,

Perfect, thank you!

Anon518 OP ,

I’m not even subscribed to that, and even if I was, and it was a default subscription for every new lemmy.world user, I don’t think it’s a good replacement for a functional search or an all that includes all posts from federated instances. I see lots of posts on all-hot with 0-5 upvotes so it seems fine if it actually showed all communities on federated instances (which it doesn’t).

Anon518 OP ,

It’s not too big of an issue if you’re from big instance as people will likely look for more community to subscribe

Yeah that’s what I thought, and I assumed that shitjustworks was big enough to not have to worry about that, but apparently not. So I think this is one of the biggest problems with lemmy right now.

which makes people migrate to bigger instance, and defeat the purpose of having multiple instance

Bingo.

Anon518 OP ,

Even your ping idea wouldn’t have worked here

Why not? When the person created the sub it would have sent out a ping to all federated instances, and thus when any account on a federated instance searches the keyword they would find that sub. IE: each instance would have a list of subs of all other federated instances. Like a sitemap.

Anon518 OP ,

I don’t agree that they are solutions. The only proposed solutions are in the new github issue that someone created.

did you just want to bitch and argue?

I want lemmy to be better. I want it to be a viable alternative to reddit so people will leave that site.

Anon518 OP ,

What is that?

Anon518 OP ,

Isn’t it mostly text? Why would that be a heavy burden? Isn’t there an option to disable local hosting of images & videos?

Anon518 OP ,

Great news.

Anon518 OP ,

No it wouldn’t? Unless you mean that’s what you think it should do?

Yes, and it seems that the devs have this in mind on their to-do list.

Anon518 OP ,

How would you know no one cares if no one can even see them…

“Inefficient” doesn’t seem important since if there’s no content/activity there then it doesn’t use any resources.

Anon518 OP ,

I do encourage people on reddit to come here, but as another reddit mod recently said on lemmy, they’re waiting for improvements on lemmy (like /r/toolbox, RES) before being able/willing to move over.

Anon518 OP ,

there’s an easy fucking solution: fork lemmy and adjust the federation to your liking

Ah yes, very easy. Thanks for the suggestion.

Anon518 OP ,

Keyboard nav is not a RES feature I’ve ever used. Tagging is a main one. As is subscribing to threads to be notified of new comments.

Anon518 OP ,

/r/watchredditdie is not going to migrate to /c/reddit communities that are mildly-anti-reddit at best and often have pro-reddit content. I’m hoping they’ll be willing to migrate to a /c/watchredditdie one.

Anon518 OP ,

Here you go sh.itjust.works/post/13700601. Most of the votes and comments are pro-reddit. And a user there also mentions another anti-reddit thread that the mods deleted for a pretty ridiculous reason.

A major reddit critic posts to lemmy and they get trolled or astroturfed, and their thread deleted.

Regardless, I’ve done what I can to try to get some communities to move to Lemmy, and they don’t seem interested. So I think I give up for now.

Anon518 OP ,

It did on reddit (r/watchredditdie) and the admins shut it down. Snoopocalyse existed on lemmy, but went into archive mode.

Anon518 OP , (edited )

There are voices, and actions that reddit has silenced that should be given back a voice again. Reddit has been doing very bad things and sweeping them under the rug. This will give people a chance to find out about what reddit is trying to hide from the public.

/r/watchredditdie for example, was a big sub that reddit basically shut down. I’m hoping to draw some of those people to lemmy as their new home. www.tandfonline.com/doi/…/24701475.2021.1997179

Anon518 OP ,

As I said, I did actually see some weird pro-reddit stuff there. WatchRedditDie is also a subreddit with a long history. www.tandfonline.com/doi/…/24701475.2021.1997179

Anon518 OP ,

Isn’t it heavily downvoted?

Nope. The anti-reddit stuff was downvoted and pro-reddit stuff upvoted. I dug back into my profile to find the most recent time it happened to me sh.itjust.works/comment/7640949.

Overall I don’t find lemmy very anti-reddit at all. There were a bunch of anti-reddit subreddits of pretty large size that reddit basically shut down. All of them were way more anti-reddit than lemmy is. /r/watchredditdie and /r/declineintocensorship for example. I’m hoping to pull some of those people to lemmy by giving them a new home.

Anon518 OP ,

Yeah I didn’t want to go digging that far back. I wouldn’t say they’re large. They have a few hundred subscribers while the /r/watchredditdie, etc. subs had more than a hundred thousand and were larger alone than the whole of lemmy.

Anon518 OP ,

be prepared for most of the people to just stick to those two, as they are well established and have large userbases

Also, isn’t that against the whole notion of Lemmy? To spread things out and avoid concentration?

Anon518 OP ,

Any suggestions for improvement?

Anon518 OP ,

Any suggestions for improvement? Or you think messaging mods is just completely useless?

Anon518 OP ,

Feel free to offer other suggestions. As is, “do nothing” is not going to grow the fediverse.

Anon518 OP ,

It’s better to have this happen organically

Of course, but organic moves seem to be done at this point.

Anon518 OP ,

Yeah, I blocked all the meme subs on lemmy. I’m not interested in inviting those. I plan to invite some niche subs that I’ve followed/known about for years that haven’t moved over yet.

Anon518 OP ,

In large part, I agree. But there are subs/content on reddit that isn’t available anywhere else. I’d like to stop having to go to reddit for anything. The more communities that set up shop on lemmy, the more search engines will provide people with alternative results to reddit, and the less we’ll have to go to reddit for niche content.

Anon518 OP ,

It doesn’t appear that reddit is preventing subreddits from creating ans advertising lemmy alternatives. They don’t have to close down.

Anon518 OP ,
Anon518 OP ,

Do you have a suggestion other than “do nothing”?

Anon518 OP ,

Yeah it’s working now.

Anon518 OP ,

rather than desperately trying to recreate the shit hole that is reddit

I don’t want that either. See my other comments.
