When I was a somewhat devout JW (people often say Jehovah Witness as a noun, but that always bugged me grammatically since properly stated it should be "Witness of Jehovah), I told a nonJW Christian friend that I couldn’t be “unevenly yoked with unbelievers.” She (who wasn’t interested in me, she was trying to matchmake me with a mutual friend) got offended since we should all have been Christians and she felt I was calling her an unbeliever.

Certain denominations have so very different beliefs that if followed to their logical conclusions they shouldn’t be able to have relationships, but so many people bend the rules. I fortunately am no longer captive to that ideology, though I do think I’m permanently damaged. Still, not as damaged as people who went through sexual abuse. My stuff is mostly mental and will probably just mean I’ll never have a romantic relationship.

chatokun ,

I’ve done it myself when feeling the back of a pc and trying to get away without looking. I’ve been doing IT support since high school.

chatokun ,

I wouldn’t call myself a Trekkie, but I love Risa or RISA, or however the properly capitalized way it is. I’m not not a fan of Star Trek, I’ve just watched far too little to call myself a Trekkie. Excluding movies, I’ve probably seen something like 30-60 episodes of TNG and DS9. A few of Voyager I guess. Mostly what I caught on TV whole younger, and my memory of them in general is enjoyment. I’ve also read a book or two, but I was also reading SW books and definitely read more of those.

chatokun ,

Some of us buy those ironically though. I had a shirt that said (and I unfortunately cannot put it in kana/Kanji atm) something very close to, in full kana and kanji: “I am a stupid American. I’ll buy anything.”

I knee fully what it meant because the sentence was pretty easy, but I still wanted to travel to Japan wearing it.

chatokun ,

I too used mine as a backup. I don’t have a working one atm, but technically my steamdeck works for most of the games I’d want to keep up with, if a bit harder to use. I can even do ffxiv, though definitely less skilled using the steamdeck. I might try with a dock and my 8bitdo controller and see how that feels (already have both, but haven’t really tested it since I use that controller for switch instead).

chatokun ,

For me it’s often about 90% done by the time it itches, so it ends up an issue. Not as big of one, sure, but still a little bleeding.

chatokun ,

I’m into anime and manga. This trope is overdone there, generally in harem stuff. In the US, maybe Betty and Veronica? I’ve never actually read or followed one, but that was my impression from Tvtropes.

chatokun ,

Perhaps they simply mean they don’t want it internet connected at all. If it needs updates, have it be a device, USB or OBD or something, that would be the only vector for updates/direct OS control. Sure, allow internet for some features maybe, but isolate updates and the anything serious from remote tampering.

chatokun ,

Huh. Turns out I use most of my games as toys, not games. I rarely finish games, usually getting a lot of stuff done, high leveled, etc, then just enjoying it until I decide ro start over. I also regularly go back to games like Ark, 7 days, City Skylines, Civ VI(but often strip out ein conditions so I can keep playing), FFXIV, etc.

Sure I make short term goals that I complete, but usually not done everything and complete story to win unless doing so gives me something else to do, like New Game+.

chatokun ,

sayin. Though the way its said could sound like see…

Seriously, though. How often do you think of the Roman Empire?

I know this is a joke/meme, but I sincerely think of the Roman Empire a surprising amount of times. I find myself obsessing over how Roman citizens were living just as complex lives as we are today, or about Marcus Aurelius’ life and philosophy, or about how the Republic fell and became a totalitarian state.

chatokun ,

Generally only if something else prompts it. Such as this meme and the news around it, or a game, or a work of fiction referencing it for some reason. It doesn’t come up independently in my head.

chatokun ,

Check out his Behind the Bastards episode. I’ll pass on giving him a pass.

chatokun ,

Wait, rice and beans isn’t fun? It requires some extra seasonings but Carrib style rice and peas are my jam. Though it does have a Lotta aromatics.

chatokun ,

They do hate themselves, but then they had how that feels, so they hate others more.

chatokun ,

I’ve found the source of the ticking, it’s a pipe bomb!

Yaaaay!

chatokun ,

Wait, you’re the asshole making my left foots second to last toe keep hurting randomly?

chatokun ,

I mean, I’m vocal to family and friends about stuff like this. I don’t see the point in fighting strangers over it and I don’t go out looking for strangers to talk to, but I’ve definitely said stuff to coworkers when I think the joke is going to far, basically a “hey, why don’t we just drop this subject” type thing.

Still you’re right I’d not really get into it unless they keep doing it.

Edit though the thing I’ve probably defended the most to my friends (because they aren’t assholes who do racists or even really generational complaints like this) has been furry hate bandwagoning. While, like every group of people, there are problematic furries, most of them are just isolated people finding people they can identify with, who can comfort each other. No need to hate em for a fetish/role play if they aren’t actually harming anyone or any animals. I’m not even sure I’ve heard of a self proclaimed furry who actually practiced beastiality instead of just fursonas etc, but rules of the universe say there has to be at least one.

Look, we’ve never seen someone try to get out of trial so much they get a default judgement in two different states, causing them a judgement of ~1.5 billion dollars. They certainly didn’t have a lawyer who thinks dropping his pants and saying the nword is a funny standuo bit, and no one has told him Grape Job Norm.

Said lawyer also didn’t decide to defend Proud Boys and lose said case as well. So not following the rules and doing whatever you think is established precedence that works, imo.

Behind the Bastards did a 2 parter on it, and iirc one of the guys who caused airline problems in the 2000s went on to rental real estate after not getting punished enough in that fiasco.

chatokun ,

Hmm, didn’t realize certain comments would be blocked by federation type stuff as well(if I’m understanding what you mean anyway).

chatokun ,

Had my tray table up, and .y seat back in the full upright position!

chatokun ,

I like their Phillies, but that was where Phillies weren’t that common. The mall had Phillies too, and honestly I think I liked em better, but Jersey Mike’s was faster to get to.

I think real lawyers would call it “Objection, nonresponsive.”

Jimmy Fallon apologises to Tonight Show staff after toxic workplace allegations - reports (www.theguardian.com)

Earlier on Thursday, Rolling Stone published allegations from two current and 14 former employees, including production crew and writers, who requested anonymity out of fear of retaliation. Rolling Stone claimed they had approached an additional 80 current and former employees, but “not a single one agreed to speak on the...

Not sure, I’ve never watched him. I don’t really watch late shows that much lately, but I’ve enjoyed content from Last Week Tonight, Seth, Colbert, Jon Stewart when he was host of Daiky Show, and yes, Trevor Noah’s show roo (I’ve heard people lambasting him as being Neoliberal, which probably is true, but I liked how they had some angles based on black people. Same with Seth’s jokes Seth can’t tell for black and lesbian stuff). Of those I probably liked Last Week Tonight the most.

The others can be charming sometimes even in ways that’s not inherently funny, but more like hamming it up (Colbert and Seth).

I’ve never found a clip of Fallon that made me want to watch.

What are some commonly known facts that are too bizarre for you to believe to be true?

For me it is the fact that our blood contains iron. I earlier used to believe the word stood for some ‘organic element’ since I couldn’t accept we had metal flowing through our supposed carbon-based bodies, till I realized that is where the taste and smell of blood comes from.

chatokun ,

Huh. Oddly I am allergic to shrimp and lobster, but love mushrooms. To me they don’t smell the same though. Though this fact probably explains why veg oyster sauce is mushrooms.

chatokun ,

While agreed it probably was a suicide, the harassment from media et al probably drove him to it, at least partially.

chatokun ,

I am heavily invested into Google (my music, much of my bought series/movies, email, Google drive, Keep, Android, Chrome) and of course Google is a fucking ad company.

chatokun ,

There’s a store at Dragoncon each year that sells a bunch of these. They’re making money, and not from 8 year Olds. Maybe 8 year old maturity… but, you know.

chatokun ,

Half the reason I play Elite is space trucking. I’m only raising my empire rank to get the largest ship… in order to space truck better. The Fed Corvette I plan to make a combat vessel, but the Cutter will be my space truck.

chatokun ,

Hello fellow big featherless birds!

chatokun ,

He has actually rambled about birds, and it’s actually pretty funny. He got off a tangent about a neighbor’s peacocks in his past, then talks about how owls would take their heads off in a swoop. “But I digress…”

Unfortunately I don’t quite remember the Knowledge Fight episode it’s in, so I can’t direct you to it. What I recall is he was talking about something completely different and god sidetracked.

chatokun ,

Ahh, the majestic space duck.

How would you explain the need for three writing systems in Japanese to a person who only has had experience with one?

As an English speaking person who recently got into learning Japanese, I was intrigued by the use of the three writing systems: Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana, however I could not truly understand why it is that way. I do know a bit about the history of these languages but that is not what I am interested in knowing; I wish to...

chatokun ,

Cursive and non Cursive could work too. I’m no good at Cursive, nor would I really be good at writing Japanese, Chinese, or Korean due to handwriting. Arabic would probably suck for me too.

chatokun ,

I listen to a podcast debunking Alex Jones. He tells stories exactly in the same fashion, but usually about face masks not working, Covid denial, or some new world order nonsense. Including the whole cashier was shocked or thanked him blah blah blah. Insufferable.

chatokun ,

We all have faults, and some that echo terrible people. Like I ramble and talk too much, not very concise and to the point. Alex Jones also has that fault, though I’m pretty sure he intentionally weaponizes it, while I just wallow in self hatred while doing the very thing I hate about myself.

chatokun ,

In case you missed it, their comment was satirical.

chatokun ,

They say single, so I assume they also mean living alone. Being able to pay rent etc on your own without roommates. Still, while I skimmed the article I didn’t read all the nuance so I might have missed where they specified their parameters.

Edit: found it:

In Hawaii, the living wage for single workers is $112,411 — the highest in the U.S. — according to an analysis by personal finance website GOBankingRates.com. To determine the living wage in each state, GOBankingRates calculated the minimum amount a single person would need to follow the 50/30/20 budget, using data from Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Following this outline, 50% of income is used to cover necessities, such as housing and utility costs, 30% goes toward discretionary spending, and 20% is left for savings or investments.

chatokun ,

Yes, but that’s to their friends; not people who should be obeying their instructions without question like the peasants they are.

chatokun ,

Bit over 40 here stressing about my next place to live. It’s getting so expensive. When I started thus latest job I was a bit desperate due ro a year without work, and I basically asked for pay that would allow me to afford a single room apartment at the time. I’ve had raises since, and it still feels like I can barely afford the same thing. One of my uncles thinks my opinion doesn’t matter because I don’t own a home, so I’m “unsuccessful”, and we should listen to successful home owners like them.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but couldn’t it simply be different instances? Lemmy.world doesn’t federate all the same instances as Lemmy.dbzer0.com, but they are still federated to each other. Posting to both will let you see duplicates, but there may be people from other instances who only see one.

I’m not sure I’ve ever worked a 9-5 honestly. Always 8-5, 8:30-5:30, or random other 9 hour (or more, worked 3/12.5 once) days. If we can’t get rid of the 40 hour week I guess I’d prefer 4 10s, but 4 8s would be better.

It’s an old term for pirates. Some of us believe the term was repurposed/coined by Brady Haran on… iirc Hello Internet?

chatokun ,

You should snopes check that one. They did acquire non working ships as payment, but they scrapped em. What you said is technically correct, but oversells it.

chatokun ,

You know, I listened to that too, so it’s possible I’m mixing them up. Both talked about him but the quotes may have come from QAA and maybe I just mixed it up in my head.
