FlyingSquid , in Transgender teen attempts self-mastectomy before pool party
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

My 13-year-old daughter’s best friend is trans. His parents will not give him any sort of puberty blockers or hormones, but they do let him use a chest binder, which must be quite uncomfortable. They accept that he is trans and do not deadname him, but won’t go any further than that.

He has a lot of psychological issues.

I worry about him a lot.

tehbilly ,

Sounds a lot like they’re hoping it’s a phase and will “work itself out”.

My oldest is NB, they’re 15. I like to think we’re about as open-minded as it gets, but I still had the thought that it might be something brought about by seeing people they look up to being a certain way and not from internal, intrinsic reasons.

I hope your daughter’s friend ends up ok. If nothing else then knowing there are people out there that think of him might help with feeling isolated and misunderstood.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That’s definitely a possibility. I only met his mom once and only for a second, but they seem supportive enough to spend money on boys clothes for him.

I’m more worried about how he’s treated in school- they deadname him (and his parents have told the school not to), they make him use the girls’ bathroom and locker room, and once a girl was being bigoted, he slapped her for it, and only he got punished.

We took my daughter out of that school and put her in online school because she was bullied so badly it was giving her major psychological issues and she is cis, so I can’t imagine how bad he has it. I do know that at 13, he’s already vaping and smoking weed. And he cuts himself. If I could, I would take him out of that school and drive him to my house every day to do online school with my daughter.

tehbilly ,

That’s awful. Man, it sucks seeing that kind of thing and not being able to help.

redisdead ,

and once a girl was being bigoted, he slapped her for it, and only he got punished.

Oh so they are capable of treating him like a guy.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Of course. Trans people are their true gender when it suits the bigots.

Evkob ,

I still had the thought that it might be something brought about by seeing people they look up to being a certain way and not from internal, intrinsic reasons.

Funnily enough, that’s very similar to the thought process I had regarding masculinity when I came out to myself as non-binary.

Thanks for supporting your kid.

tehbilly ,

That’s super interesting! And I guess I can kind of see that point about masculinity, it’s an awful thing overall the way we treat the notion of “manliness”. Good on you, and thanks for the insight!

Kit ,

I wore chest binders for like 4 years. They’re not bad. It’s a great way to present masculine while deciding if you want to make a move that will dramatically change the course of your life.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Well I’m glad to hear they are not as uncomfortable as I had feared. There are a lot of other issues with him, unfortunately. Poor kid.

Ranvier , (edited ) in Texas doctor who said nine-year-olds can safely give birth appointed to maternal mortality committee

What is wrong with people? Anyways, here’s the facts:

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35675595/

Compared with deliveries to patients aged 20-54 years, deliveries to patients aged 11-14 years were associated with increased risk for severe maternal morbidity (aOR 1.73, 95% CI 1.49-2.00), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (aOR 1.79, 95% CI 1.71-1.88), and postpartum hemorrhage (aOR 1.37, 95% CI 1.27-1.49).

I can’t even find data for kids as young as 9, because it’s such a rare and obviously bad situation.

4am , in 'LOL No:' Maker of 'F*CK THE LAPD' Shirt Laughs at Cops' Copyright Threat

Wait, the LAPD is a government entity. They are funded with public taxpayer money.

They cannot own a copyright or a trademark. It belongs to the public.

EDIT: this is also why you can use NASA footage and audio recordings royalty free in your own works. Because you already paid for them.

BigPotato ,

You can use any US Military footage from dvidshub.net as well.

catloaf ,

I don’t think that’s right, not least of all because they actually do have LAPD as a registered trademark.

refalo ,

This is easy to get around, often the copyright will just be held by a contractor.

Unlike works of the U.S. government, works produced by contractors under government contracts are protected under U.S. copyright law . The holdership of the copyright depends on the terms of the contract and the type of work undertaken.

CaptainSpaceman , in Why Americans' confidence in finding a new job is tanking even as the labor market is humming along

The “labor market” is great for jobs paying <$15/hr. Go to your local gas station, dollar store, or restaurant and you’ll probably see a help wanted sign.

Over that and youre kinda fucked unless you have a niche role to fill.

shikitohno ,

Yeah, talking about jobs being created without any context on the types of jobs being created is meaningless. Great, there are now more part-time jobs paying minimum wage with no benefits and erratic schedules near me, just the sort of job creation I was waiting for so I could regress in my career.

lennybird , in Biden: what would Trump have done if the Capitol riots had been led by Black Americans?

OccamsRazer ,

How do you think MSNBC and CNN would cover it?

lennybird , (edited )
@lennybird@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly I’m pretty sure close to the same. At the least they’d probably call it a riot as opposed to an insurrection but it begs the question — would they do such a thing in the first place?

We can get a clue of this on how they covered the George Floyd Protests outside the White House on May 29th, 2020.

… But the left didn’t trespass into the Capitol; nor did they start beating cops relentlessly. Nor were their grievances as patently hollow and void as the Jan 6’ers. Nor were their actions stoked by the President, themselves. Nor were their goals as remotely fascist.

OccamsRazer ,

It’s a little confusing what Biden even meant. I assumed he was asking if white people were swapped out for Black people on Jan 6, and all else were equal.

xmunk , in Trump and Johnson spread unfounded fears by urging non-citizen voting ban

“We all know – intuitively – that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections. But it’s not been something that is easily provable,” Johnson said

Turns out it’s really fucking hard to come up with proof for things everyone - intuitively - knows are false.

Every fucking time the GOP forces voter fraud investigations it turns up more fraud from Republican voters than Democrats… the idiocy of their voting base is the only reason they keep hawking this bullshit.

newthrowaway20 , (edited )

We all know – intuitively – that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections.

Doubt

But it’s not been something that is easily provable.

You can’t prove it, you mean. Because it isn’t happening. You can tell because they are blaming the ethereal ‘illegal’.

Johnson and Trump putting their feelings. first. And their little wittle feefee’s tell them they’re special and deserve to rule over you. Fuck their feelings.

CosmicTurtle0 ,

This reminds me of the Sandy Hook depositions.

One of the admins for Infowars was being deposed and was asked, “How come, even with all the evidence showing that it wasn’t staged, did you keep pushing the narrative that it was?”

The woman took no pause and said, “Because it felt true!”

No reservation. No empathy. Just pure fear.

These people aren’t governing from facts. Which means that no amount of facts will deter them from their views.

No facts will convince them that they are wrong.

They are right. More importantly, they are righteous. And they will stop at nothing until they get their way.

That’s what makes them dangerous.

Cause/effect thinking is surprisingly hard for some

Edit: to clarify, I mean people who don’t understand or believe what you are saying

Nougat ,

Put another way, there is a very strong incentive for undocumented people to be as law-abiding as possible.

Specific to this “illegals voting” nonsense, if there had been enough undocumented people voting in a presidential election to impact the outcome, some of them would have been caught.

So far as I am aware, there are zero cases of an undocumented person even attempting to vote. Anywhere, ever.

IamAnonymous ,

One of the questions in the application for citizenship is if you ever voted in a local, state or federal election. So they will be giving up their chance to become a citizen if they vote illegally.

Drusas , in Mother fatally mauled by pack of dogs in Quitman, Georgia, 3 children taken to hospital

Cox said about a dozen dogs went after Williams' three children....

No one needs to own a dozen dogs, outside of niche cases like service dog training programs. Certainly no one should have a dozen "pet" dogs. Clearly an irresponsible owner situation.

Buffalox ,

Afaik the max here is 6, if you have more, you need to be registered.
Anyways this incident must be the responsibility of the owner, he has not secured his dogs properly. Obviously they all need to be put down, and the owner should be tried for manslaughter IMO. What the law says however IDK.
Maybe some sort of causing death through negligence.

Edit: just looked it up, the max is 4 adult dogs. More is considered a kennel and requires permission. (Denmark)

Would that not irritate the judge? How do you trust a defendant who lies about what they present as legitimate scheduling conflicts? They could just continue to make shit up and delay the trial. blazera , in Panera says it's phasing out its controversial Charged Lemonade nationwide
@blazera@lemmy.world avatar

It was a bizarre thing. Energy drinks are at least marketed as having extreme amounts of caffeine, but this has more, is sold at a bread store, and the caffeine is intentionally downplayed.

psmgx , (edited )

Aye, that’s the weirdest part. Panera is like the basic mom place, coffee and bagels and sandwiches. Seems like a demographic mismatch, and not being blatent about the caffeine intake literally got people killed.

Point is, shouldn’t have been a thing and should have gone away sooner.

Zahille7 ,

Right? Like I feel like it’s already run its entire promotional campaign course and they’re announcing this just because they’re “done with it” (for now at least. Who knows about next year).

Like it’s been the 4-6 months or however long they originally planned it for and are just finishing up the cycle.

BakerBagel ,

It’s because caffeine is mote addictive than nicotine. You drink the chatged lemonade at Panera during your lunch break and think “wow! I felt great after my working kunch at Panera! I’m going back there more!” But that’s just because you are caffeinated up to your gills without realizing it. It’s the exact same as the story of a Chinese restaurant putting opium in the noodles to get people addicted to the shop.

I really hope you are joking.

Caffeine is nothing compared to nicotine.

    My body and brain are mostly caffeine at this point, so I know a thing or two. I’ve also done more than a few rounds of cutting caffeine out for a few weeks or more.

    In most people you don’t have to have a protocol for caffeine withdrawal or eliminating it completely. It sucks really bad for about 48 hours with a headache that is just shy of a migraine but once you get past that, all that is left is being a little more tired and run down until your body starts to adjust.

    I’m not sure if you meant that for me or the dorkus I responded to but I already knew most if not all of that.
